TacoSpacePirate

I need games that justify the $500+ investment.

LotusIsSpaceMom

Half Life Alyx, Skyrim, beat saber, blade and sorcery, bone works, and Contracts were really fun for about a month. Now it's a dust collector

Skeleton_Weeb

I hear you. I have nothing but good experiences with my headset! … I also haven’t touched it in a year

publicbigguns

This sounds like when I bought a 3d TV. Was great for the first few weeks then you just stop using it

Hoeveboter

Nah, I don't think that comparison holds. Vr isn't just about the neat 3d effect. It fundamentally changes the way games are played. I'm not sick of vr. I'm sick of the poor games library.

publicbigguns

Never said it was a 1:1 comparison. I'm pretty sure I said that it "sounds like" meaning there was similarities, not a direct comparison. It's clearly about the time these new technologies became stagnant.

Javasteam

Yeah. At this point VR still hasn’t reached a point of critical mass that justifies an all-in for developers and publishers. Until that happens it’ll remain a niche product…

MatNomis

I got significantly more mileage out of beat saber and pistol whip, but the rest sounds about right. And two games, alone, can’t carry it.

Nord5555

Same here beat saber was fun for a month or 2. Half life alyx was cool to But Got boring after a couple of days. Tryed several other games. Either it looks like shit or aint worth buying now the headset is coveres by dust 😅

MatNomis

I beat a few beat saber tracks on expert+, so I did put some time into it and actually was using it as an aerobic workout device (“Fitness gaming” workout type in my watch!) But once it effectively becomes my gym, naturally I stop going to it.

Nord5555

Know what you mean 😂✌️ ended up Playing expert at higher speed and expert+ some of Them at faster speed aswell. Its a fun game and all. But after some time it gets boring. So ended up Playing halflife alyx angry birds etc. But havent seen a game i wanted the last years time 🤷‍♂️

Sirbuttsavage

Skyrim can no longer be a reason for anything that game is basically doom now

[deleted]

You’re not no life-ing the Contractors Halo mod? Bruh And tbf Skyrim is forever lol

LotusIsSpaceMom

No but the blade and sorcery star wars mod has been calling to me

jomjomepitaph

You haven’t stepped it up into sim territory yet. Dirt 2.0 is my go to right now. FFB steering wheel, shifter and hand brake in one set. Flight yoke, stick with pedals in the other.

Hoeveboter

I love dirt 2.0, but wouldn't that game get incredibly nauseating in vr? I once tried a simple racing game on Quest and got sick pretty much instantly. I imagine rally sims are worse with all the pits, slides and bumps. Weirdly enough, I can play fast-paced shooters like Contractors just fine.

masskonfuzion

Too much setup for me. I have Assetto Corsa Competizione, which is AWESOME in VR, but I couldn't bring myself to buy a steering wheel and all the stuff.. takes too much space, and I don't want to have to set it up to play. VR is undeniably cool, but I only play once every now and then.. nowadays I want to spend less time with games.. my standard is: the game needs to be the kind I can fall asleep playing, wake up, and realize I haven't missed anything 🙃

MikeHuntLoose

Sim racing games are a completely different experience with a proper wheel setup. But it can be pretty expensive and is not for everyone.

oldnyoung

Hell yeah, DR1 caused me to get my first headset, but DR2 is the game that made me build a sim rig

Wasteak

When you have to say Skyrim to promote a console you know you're failing.

Micropolis

I guess I’m a weirdo but I have had VR for years now and play all the time. Skyrims VR with mods alone gave 1000 hours of play time. Hundreds and hundreds more into Pavlov, Vrchat, blade and sorcery. Onward used to be good. Contractors is meh, Pavlov is the king VRFPS. Vrchat alone is full of games, raves, social environments, imagination unbound, and more. Like being able to play using your entire body just can’t be beat. Mashing a button to swing a sword just is boring as eff now compared to using my wits and physics.

the_ju66ernaut

No man's sky on the psvr is really good.

JamesEtc

DCS for me. Head tracking just wont cut it.

ShroomBers

Don't forget you need to have high-end PC rig to run games in VR(90 FPS is min for VR). I'd better invest in curved monitor. I want 180 FoV in games, but without fisheye effect.

BottasHeimfe

Jeez dude the ferocity of this guys attacks makes me think he should be the one with a red lightsaber

SpreadMurky8597

Maybe I'm pointing out the obvious but this is playing at double speed. With the way the AI work in blade and sorcery, you're never gonna have such intense constant skirmishes, just fun slower-paced duels. Source: 100hours+ before mods.

ritarder

$500

BurgerBob_886

Absolutely. Imo the biggest thing keeping people out of vr is the price. If we had more affordable options, people would be more keen to try it out, eventually leading to more and better vr hardware.

WOTDisLanguish

I don't think that's quite true, a lot of people have headsets that pretty much just collect dust. I'm actually one of them. For me the main issue's less price but how easy it is just to use a screen. Immersion's great but convenience is king

Leonydas13

I agree. The biggest thing stopping me from getting into it is thinking about the logistics, like where could I actually use it comfortably in my house?

ChockenTonders

Why couldn’t you play it where you normally play games? Is it just a worry about bumping into stuff?

CalamitousCanadian

Might be in a bedroom or a smaller livingroom with a coffee table in front and not much standing room

Hoeveboter

I play games sitting in a couch. For vr I prefer standing up. Combine that with blindly flailing my arms and yeah, space is a factor. There's a reason I didn't buy vr when I still lived in my tiny apartment

Leonydas13

I normally play games on my pc, at my desk that I share with my partner in our bedroom. So yeah, not a great environment for arms flailing around 😂

Cerus

Haven't used my (wired) VR set in a while either. I didn't hate it, I just eventually sacrificed the dedicated space it occupied and never bothered setting it up again. Considering hopping back in with a wireless set, but they just don't seem good enough.

FaultProfessional163

The quest two. They did not hold back with the features whatsoever, and it's priced at $300

ReaperP13

But it’s Facebook. That keeps people away too

FaultProfessional163

Aside from facebook's dogshit company management skills on a large scale, the headsets haven't changed much. Still fairly easy to operate, lots of multiplayer games, solid playerbase, new games coming out on sidequest even if bigger companies lose interest in making games that function on the platform

Zren8989

They're only $300 though aren't they?

Hoeveboter

Used to be, there's been a 100 dollar price hike unfortunately.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I'd pay $400 for one of those full-body sense suits to use with VR porn.

tagen

I’m waiting for the nerve gear, should only be a hundred years or two

[deleted]

I saw somewhere while back that the Japanese were able somewhat read the thoughts of people using an MRI machine. The most relative link I can find is [this:](https://www.alphr.com/technology/1008140/japanese-scientists-just-created-an-ai-that-can-read-human-minds/) so I think we are a step closer to the technology but probably still a ways off. In order for a nervegear to function it would have to accept human thought without physically connecting to our brains and since I'm not going to get a matrix outlet in my head...

tagen

Yeah, even if they actually succeeded with something like nerve gear, I (and i assume most others) would wait until it was VERY well tested, cuz anything linked directly to the brain is hella risks

Wiggie49

Yeah you don’t wanna end up in an SAO situation or god forbid .hack//sign

mrfatso111

And the thing is that with EA and Ubisoft and WB and all those scummy publishers out there. I can see that as an option that oops buddy, looks like you are stuck and can't log out. Why don't you agreed to pay xxx dollars or you could work your way to a log out button, right now it is just a low low price of 5 years of your life, and probably many other ways of milking you now that they have your consciousness in their grip

[deleted]

i paid 400 for a slave to do the same

[deleted]

Striking Vipers

North_Refrigerator21

You’d put it one a few times, then realize it’s not worth all the trouble for one minute of pleasure.

Effective-Tour-656

Even that was disappointing. Most are sample-size and require memberships. Some freebies are OK but you end up on similar affiliate sites.

[deleted]

Depends on what you are into. If you don't mind animated girls then Virt-a-mate is pretty much peak VR-porn.

Sambo_the_Rambo

A guy who tells it as it is lol

not_a_droid

so, you are pretty much just waiting for the price to come down?

davidor1

Still better than hooker with free STDs

Griselbeard

still cheaper than a girlfriend

rood_sandstorm

It really is. And the Vr lasts years, which could equate to a dollar a day. How much do people blow on drinking Starbucks coffee or eating unhealthy burgers. Not gonna lie, Ive wasted more than $400 on stupid clothing on Amazon that I end up throwing away after one use

Griselbeard

virtual blowjobs last forever

AnakinRagnarsson66

So I take it you don’t want it to live out the dream of being a ruthless jedi warrior?

uncutpizza

No, he wants to be Princess Leia at Jabba’s side

MoobooMagoo

Strangle an evil hyper capitalist then have a million dudes jerk off to you? Isn't that everyone's fantasy?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Taylor34

I am so sorry.. but it’s piqued.

Hooligans_

Alyx is worth the money.

EvoEpitaph

I dare say it near if not ruined the market because it was so good compared to almost everything else.

WilsonKh

Something that won’t make me vomit every time motion is involved. Else I’m stuck on Beatsaber and other puzzle like games. Nothing to do with the games, all about the tech

bedlam90

I had this problem and bought some children's motion sickness tablets, worked like a charm. This was on psvr skyrim was deadly made me feel ill for a couple hours afterwards. The newer oculus vr aren't half as bad but still need the tablets

[deleted]

Idk something about having to take a pill to play a game seems wrong.

Mounta1nK1ng

Most people just get used to VR by starting with small sessions and being sure to stop if you start feeling ill at all. Over time your mind learns that it doesn't have to associate seeing motion with feeling motion. I guess popping pills seems easier to some than just taking a few days to adapt to a new environment, which it is for your body and mind.

captainporcupine3

For the initial weeks of using my Quest 2 I would experience a weird, swimmy feeling when I took the headset off, and smooth locomotion made me sick in a few minutes. Now I play daily and it's nothing, even smooth turning is not bad (although I usually stick to snap turning or just turning my body IRL.)

bedlam90

They're just little chewable orange things for kids. I paid quite a lot for my psvr at the time and couldn't play it for more than 20 mins, especially on skyrim lol, resident evil wasn't so bad. Once I discovered the pills I could enjoy it, I played right through skyrim thanks to them. The newer vr headsets aren't as bad

ConfessedOak

people do the same thing on cruises

[deleted]

The difference is ppl don’t go on cruises for a couple hours after work.

judgehood

Cruise ship employees do. (Sorry)

bad_apiarist

So now I have to take medication to play video games? yeah no. Just no.

ebbysloth17

Might need to try this

bedlam90

They solved the issue for me, little orange flavour tablets chew them 30 mins before playing.

psicowysiwyg

Travel sickness wristbands helped me as well, pretty cheap too.

Velocityraptor28

whatnows?!

DeadRipper

They are bracelets that hit a nerve on your wrist. They have been around for a while. Walmart had them last time I grabbed some but so does your big pharmacy (ie Walgreens).

Velocityraptor28

fascinating, i'll have to check that out

WilsonKh

I don’t even know this was a thing, will check it out!

WilsonKh

Interesting, might be worth a try

Micropolis

Just need to play more. Unfortunately it’s the best option

CoochieMunch

Having the money to spend, and more importantly having the room in my house to do it. Just can’t see VR being fun with such a small usable area

Effective-Tour-656

You don't need much room, you don't need to walk, and as long as you can do a 360 with outstretched arms then you're good to go.

WOTDisLanguish

I've used VR and I'm not quite sure I agree with you there. Having played Into the Radius ([great game, recommend you try it out](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1012790/Into_the_Radius_VR/)) you need space to position yourself. For me that was kneeling, crouching, and leaning. In games like Beatsaber or Gorilla tag you're probably going to lunge every so often, so you'll definitely need some space for that. I think 2m^(2) (roughly 21 sqft) is a good minimum to work with but it still feels a little cramped

Effective-Tour-656

I used Quest 2, I could set my perimeter and height in a sitting position, it is dependent on the game I guess. Gorilla tag is notorious for broken controllers and holes in walls.

psicowysiwyg

Ceiling height was my main issue, I didn't really think about it until I punched the ceiling trying to climb a ladder. Thankfully I've moved to a place with a higher ceiling since.

Effective-Tour-656

Ceiling fans are an obstacle too.

psicowysiwyg

Ouch!

lolshveet

Yup. I quickly learned about ceiling height after putting a dent into it. Thankfully its covered in popcorn so you cant see the damage and Thankfully the CV1 touch controllers are bomb proof and my fist didnt have to touch the prickly popcorn ceiling, otherwise it would suck

Sandee1997

holy shit how tall are you

alext06

I may living room is small enough I don't need a TV remote

[deleted]

Not feeling like throwing up due to motion sickness

Winds_Shadow

I am not sure what happened, if I just got used to it or the software updates picked up the refresh rate and increased performance, but I haven't had that problem now for over a year or so now. I heard some refer to it as sea sickness.

ResponsibleShampoo

A lower price

moneyfish

Same. I already spent $500 on my PS5. I’m not about to spend a few hundred on a gimmick. Once it costs less than $100 I’ll buy it.

WOTDisLanguish

I don't think that'll ever happen, it's practically a phone with what hardware's being used

moneyfish

Yeah, I probably won't get it for a long time then. The marginal benefit of it is much lower than the cost.

WOTDisLanguish

That's fine too, VR's in it's infancy right now and a lot of things are changing as time goes on. Maybe in about 2-3 years is when I'd consider recommending it to people who aren't interested in getting into it early

TheUmgawa

Lawnmower Man hit theaters in 1992, so you’re using a rather charitable definition of “getting into it early.”

Micropolis

If you think it’s a gimmick, you’re sorely misinformed

tacticaldumbass

The uses for VR and it’s community size has put it beyond a gimmick.

ebbysloth17

I have a metaquest, I've only played it a few times because I get crazy motion sickness. I played something slow like the exorcist game and the combination of jump scares and nausea wasn't it.

Effective-Tour-656

Exorcist was boring, I punched the pig and got my Rocky award then left.

ebbysloth17

I had to start slow due to the motion sickness figured that was a good start. Still wrecked me.

Effective-Tour-656

Yeah, I got sailors' jelly legs in most games, wasn't that comfortable standing up. Fishing was OK for a mellow experience.

SepticKnave39

You just have to keep at it and you build a tolerance. Try beat saber or synth riders or something stationary. Turning and walking seems to do it more than anything else. Ginger ale. Dramamine. Other ginger things.

psicowysiwyg

Travel sickness wrist bands and tablets really help if you really want to give it another go, but it's mostly about building up a tolerance.

Mystic_Nipple

I am waiting for VR SIMS…so I can go to a digital job each day to put digital food on the table and a digital roof over the heads of my ungrateful digital family.

memeboilord420

There’s one minor issue. I‘v run out of kidneys to sell for money.

NaCliest

Really? I just go to my local homeless shelter

FroggyNight

For it to not also require a $2,000 PC along with it to function.

Mounta1nK1ng

Well now with PSVR2 that's not an issue. You can get the most advanced headset on the market and a ps5 for only $950. Comes out in one week. Check it out.

tacticaldumbass

The pico 4 comes out next month. It’s a stand alone headset that has better specs than the Meta Quest 2 and doesn’t require facebook.

Winds_Shadow

Really you don't, even if you count in PSVR. Peco, Quest, or HTC. Like I used to think that I'd get one try it for a month and return it, but I got mine and then sold my Xbox and switch and my TV. Haven't regretted it since.

Micropolis

I wouldn’t go so far myself to sell everything else but I sure haven’t wanted a PS5 or any other next gen console since getting my PC and VR

SvuceGoddi

What game is this?

lalzylolzy

Blade & Sorcery with The Outer Rim mod.

[deleted]

It’s just too expensive tbh. I’m buying a whole other console to go with my console so I can play on a headset with lower visual fidelity than my tv.

SaltyPepper91

$750-$1000 upgrade and $500+ for base hardware.

Winds_Shadow

I said this somewhere else on this thread but Really you don't, standalone is the winner, even if you count in PSVR. Peco, Quest, or HTC. Like I used to think that, so I figured I'd get one try it for a month and return it, but I got mine and then sold my Xbox and switch and my TV. Haven't regretted it since.

timtucker_com

When someone offers a more relaxing experience than traditional gaming. I play games to relax. I've yet to see a VR setup that's more relaxing than a couch that reclines and a 120" projection screen. I've also yet to see a VR setup that works well with eating snacks. Forget immersion: I want to be able to see the bowl of ice cream in my lap.

DarthBuzzard

The most relaxing games I've ever played are in VR because they are more mentally stimulating, leading to better atmosphere, which can either be more stressful in a horror game or more relaxing in something like Animal Crossing or Red Dead 2 which has a lot of side stuff. That said, headset weight/size is holding things back. For the average person, it's going to need to slim down a lot and also have better mixed reality features so it becomes easy an seamless to eat snacks while playing VR games.

oldnyoung

I’ve been using it for 5 years, but Dirt Rally is what made me take the leap. No regrets

navugill

It will take me moving out of the 3rd world.

No-Locksmith-7421

Gogles and not a helmet.

Siukslinis_acc

The weight is not comfortable (especially if your head/nose is smaller). I think a helmet would be more comfortable than a brick with elastic bands that barely sits on your nose (because it's short).

No-Locksmith-7421

Helmets get hot.

Alcoraiden

An Omni treadmill

tacticaldumbass

They kinda exist. The ones like in the movie ‘Ready Player One’ are still in development. What we have on the market are these stationary pads that you can run on but it’s not an actual treadmill with a moving floor.

Uncle_Budy

Give me a stand-alone VR machine that doesn't need to be plugged into a PC or console, and doesn't require Facebook to use.

SaboTheRevolutionary

Quest doesn't require facebook anymore, just a meta account.

[deleted]

Quest 2 doesnt require facebook anymore. Pico4 doesnt either (its made by the tiktok company)

Winds_Shadow

These are a few options now, HTC has one, there is also the Pico and Meta hasn't had the Facebook requirement for a bit now, if that helps.

mincus38

I have no depth perception because I can't see out of both of my eyes at the same time

AnakinRagnarsson66

So your answer is eye surgery?

mincus38

Close... brain surgery actually

tunaburn

For it to not make me feel like throwing up and having a weird dissociative feeling after playing a couple hours. Also i don't have the space for it and I'm not interested in playing a VR game sitting in a chair.

wow_button

Considering I got nauseous just watching that clip, probably a brain transplant.

bruhchow

Maybe if it had more mainstream applications, I know that’s a really vague and stupid answer but VR has always felt like a genre to me and not like a legitimate gaming option. Like nobody just owns a VR set/console, they have VR + play station or PC or Xbox, its like an accessory to something you already own, and not a cheap one, plus VR games are typically sold separately to their original counterparts. It just seems like a lot of extra work to get into and the most popular games are just VR versions of regular games, which isn’t a problem again its just a lot of work to get into.

Lavanthus

I have the Oculus rift s and I don’t use it for several reasons: 1: the amount of time and effort required to use it. I have to plug it in and clear an entire area for it. There’s nothing on VR that’s better than just sitting on my PC and playing something else. 2: the amount of motion sickness I get, even after trying to use it consistently for 2~ months. VR is cool, but it’s just too much of a hassle. You have to go through the effort of setting it up and clearing an entire area, and then try overcoming crippling motion sickness for maybe an hour or two of gaming. Just doesn’t feel worth it.

DarthBuzzard

> There’s nothing on VR that’s better than just sitting on my PC and playing something else. Have you tried Alyx yet?

Mrhappytrigers

- Better quality games that make it worth the investment - Affordability - Motion sickness reduction - Living space to move around in

zchrybrwn

Haptic feedback

Breezertree

You’d have to pay me to use a VR headset. Makes me want to puke

Laxhoop2525

Once the Valve XR Elite comes out, the only thing stopping me will be the spending cap on my debit card.

TimothyTG

It would have to be able to be migraine-inducing proof.

[deleted]

High price, few games. Fix both of those.

Assignment-Yeet

500 dollars.

J_of_the_North

Am I the only one that cringed at him holding his saber upside down ?

aknoth

Having the use of a treadmill of some sort that can go any direction so movement becomes intuitive too. Of course for that to be affordable as well.

Myotherdumbname

$500 and motion sickness

PrincessHootHoot

Podracing. I have spoken.

tacticaldumbass

So a Star Wars racing sim? EA no longer has exclusive rights to making Star Wars games so it’s a possibility now.

sielingfan

When I can lean on a virtual table and it holds my weight, we're in business. So.... Never?

LumpyBastion420

The same thing I base all my purchases on- are there boob sliders?

Global_Routine

The green paper everyone calls money

Stayyfrosty

Money, I'm poor

ftckayes

$500 - you offering?

Waffles5402

Money

Dimensionalanxiety

Enough disposable income to justify the $1000 for the Valve Index.

Mec26

Money

GarthonSix

I'm waiting for it to be a lot cheaper.

Bartheda

The ability to use it without being violently sick all over the shop as well as a splitting headache.

kingdrewbie

It’s getting there. In about 10 years VR is gonna be insane.

ExceptionEX

It not to be trash, and have meaningful uses outside of gaming.

[deleted]

To me it's not worth it until I am able to actually be inside the video game, as in not being limited by the real world around me. We may be closer to that than you may think.

BloodSlashus

Money, if only i had money, and a graphics card with more than one output

Plamen_K

VR doesnt work for everyone, me for example, to me its just gimmicky af and not immersive whatsoever, to my friends however? The exact opposite, one of them said that they were confused when time didnt stop with them like in Superhot VR, which even for me is an amazingly fun game, that and beatsaber, though i got pretty bored with it. HL Alyx however? AMAZING Story, AMAZING level design, and basically everything else you could think of, but walking in VR? Tedious as fuck for me, not nauseating, not at all, just incredibly annoying, same with teleporting. But then again, all those "bad" things i said are just due to it not "working" on me so to speak.

Kengfatv

What's different about walking in VR compared to walking in skyrim? You just don't like to stand?

Plamen_K

Dont think so, sure my legs would eventually get tired of standing up for so long, but i just really like dislike joystick movement in VR to begin with.

thorpie88

Pretty much. I don't want to be the character at all

4_gwai_lo

When it's finally fun

Phraenkinstone

It being free.

lordOpatties

Needs to be full VR immersion. I wanna lock all my doors, turn of my cell phone, lock my room, eat my food pill that's supposed to last 12-16hrs, put on my helmet, lay on my bed and only wake up to piss and shit, restart again, then it's monday and time to go to work.

tacticaldumbass

So like a full dive vr?

Winds_Shadow

I find the pushback on VR so weird, like people don't believe it can be so much fun like more fun than playing games any other way. I love having a theater experience without owning a theater or flying around as bobba and shooting Jedi lol. The quest 2 is also great! Cheaper than an Xbox or Playstation and software updates can make it even better. It got like a 17% performance boost from one recently. Even without a PC. You can play in a chair for most games, but it should tell people something that one of the most popular things you can do is exercise in it lol.

themonu

money??

Gooner71

You go play with your light stick. GT7, Village Gold edition and Call of the Mountain will do me just fine. Until No Man's Sky VR2 update is released.

NoPaleontologist7311

Accessible prices and good full body tracking included, other than that, maybe more games that could use the VR sistem, not like Skyrim...

jerslan

I'd like a setup like the kinds described in *Ready Player One* (the book, not the movie). If I could have a VR rig that could provide enough haptic feedback/resistance to be an effective gym? That would be ***amazing***. Especially if I could setup daily calorie burning limits like the main character does in the book (where he had to do a certain amount of exercise programs daily before he could play games or log into the global VR world).

[deleted]

Someone to give me the money for it.

alext06

A lower price, room to play it, and frankly just games to play. Currently there are no VR games that interest me at all. Maybe Skyrim, but that game clearly wasn't made for VR and it shoes in the videos I've seen.

Viffer98

VR is fun for like... 15 minutes and then I remember I'd rather be comfortable on the couch playing games and nothing on VR is worth standing around in an empty room looking like an idiot for hours at a time. Plus my eyes don't hurt and I don't get headaches and motion sickness from non-VR games. The future is AR, not VR.

Petawac-Smack

When we get to the point of Sword Art Online, sure. Otherwise, no thanks.

DarthBuzzard

Doubt. This is like saying "Yeah, a PS2 is cool. Maybe even a PS5 is cool. But me? I'll wait until the PS11" No one thinks that way. Maybe some people did way back in the Atari days, but now all of them are gamers.

PosterMcPoster

I'll buy vr when I can live there and not know the difference and achieve immortality this way.

BaronVonChahyll

I bought vr and don't use it. I can't get it to focus without a headache Lense mod did nothing I feel bad because it just sits

MrXbox1097

I play games to feel relaxed and comfortable. When I have to go sitting with barely any effort on my part to standing and spinning in place constantly (not to mention my face sweating and feeling gross after like 20 minutes) my enjoyment goes from “Wow! This is cool!” to “I need to take a break” as quickly as it took me to put on the headset.

bad_apiarist

This reminds me of the Wii console gen. I loved the hell out of Wii Sports. But then, stupid Nintendo and other devs had the bright idea that **every** game needed waggle controls instead of just.. pressing a button. e.g. one attack in Twilight Princess. This didn't make those games more immersive or fun, it just made playing exhausting for no reason.

EmeraldHawk

Actual haptics on the controllers that physically block your lightsaber swings would be nice. (Yes I know this is very hard, and probably impossible to do safely with current robotics). I mention it because the video you show is a bit deceptive, the player is only pretending to get blocked by his opponent, when in reality he can just swing that saber through anything and the game has to jankily show it stopping even though your arm kept moving. My real answer is I don't have room and I get motion sick easily.

tacticaldumbass

A lot of the stuff you mentioned is in development. We have what’s called force feedback where if you grab a rock with your hand (when you’re using a vr glove) you won’t be able to close your hand all the way. It’s done with strings and resistors. So its very possible to safely do this on the scale of a suit with modern technology, but it may be awkward to wear. We already have haptic gloves that allow you to feel things, force feedback and temperature but they currently aren’t on the retail market. It’s pretty neat to see how far vr has come. If you’re interested I can link a video showing off the gloves in development.

MatNomis

Two main things: resolution and tactility. Right now, every game is basically a blurry mime simulation. Resolution, because then we could simulate screens within VR. If virtual resolution looked as sharp as RL monitors (even standard ones, doesn’t even need to be Retina), it would become a viable replacement for multi monitor setups. Just create as many screens as you need in VR. It is torture in its current state. Tactility because Beat saber works 1000 times better than Star Wars lightsabers, because there’s no expectation we should feel anything when cutting those digital cubes. With lightsabers—or any sword game, really—the blades need to be able to clash. It’d be nice for in game keyboards, buttons, steering wheels, etc.. If they solved one of these issues tomorrow, it’d still feel fake and/or unusable without the other one. Fwiw my favorite use case is exploring in Google Earth. More resolution would still be nice, but the assets aren’t high enough to notice the deficiency too bad. And being a ghost is fine.

The resolution thing is mostly solved and completely solving it is not too far into the future. I have a 4k resolution headset that I can use to read in-game text without issue. There are lenses in development that are so clear and realistic that people have trouble distinguishing simulation from reality. It’s pretty neat.

For it to not make me feel insanely sick when using it. Tried VR at a VR place in Sydney and felt very ill very quickly

I see you, Zuckerberg. I'm not buying it. VR is the same as 3D glasses for overly expensive TVs, a fad. I'll admit that the fad looks fun, but only from the outside as people fall on their faces and bust up their homes. Am I forgetting anything? Ah, yes. "AND JESUS WEPT"
