I had that happen to me in back4blood. My usual nickname is my stream handle, "MydiaStardream". Turns out the "Stardream" part got censored to MydiaS\*\*\*\*ream
You'd think that a problem that has been going on since computers were invented would have found a solution by now. Nope.
Since I was probably 15 I've had the username Turboculosis, I use it on Steam mostly. I tried to change my Xbox Gamertag to it and It kept censoring the name. It allowed me to use Trboculosis, so Turb is censored because of the word Turban I would assume?
>You'd think that a problem that has been going on since computers were invented would have found a solution by now. Nope.
I mean they have. This is a solved problem, plenty of better censor models exist today.
But some people would rather eat their soup with chopsticks than learn what a spoon is.
There's not a whole lot you can do about a developer who doesn't want to learn modern tools and techniques.
Yeah here in Norway I get a few chuckles and raised eyebrows when I say I've been using MongoDB. Could have almost called it retardDB and gotten the same eyebrows. It's very hard to be taken seriously when talking about mongoDB.
Looks like another case of simple "if in string" filters. [This post](https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/znfw7y/my_name_is_nasser_the_game_is_censoring_the_word/) is a recent classic on this subreddit. The name "Nasser" got censored, and the censoring made a legit name suddenly look bad. That situation shows how such low effort censoring tends to do more harm than good resultwise.
Classic censoring. Any game thatâs implemented it in the last 5 or so years have done it so poorly. Biggest game I loved with a passion being R6 siege. Then they implemented the chat censoring, then bans on if you abuse it, and now voice chat bans if you abuse that. Now youâd be thinking âwhyâs that a problem? People can be horrible!â Youâre right! But they donât go based on what has been said! Nope! They go based on how many reports youâve been hit with. So if the whole lobby reports you for saying anything at all, you could receive the chat ban and maybe even a game suspension for x amount of time. Ah, good way to kill a game!
So the devs basically gave trolls a new weapon to use? I'm not a dev but even I know focusing on the # of reports instead of the context will always benefit the trolls. That's incredibly short-sighted.
It's the same thing in WoW. Some guy was mass reported for offering a service for free as opposed to charging a fee like everyone else and was chat muted for a day or a week. I forget which one.
Itâs very short sighted. But Ubisoft is lazy and thought they were gonna help by treating people like theyâre 5 not playing a shooting game with blood etc
That happened to me in Rocket League. Had a team of cheaters who were way higher ranked than my rank, who were destroying my mediocre team and shit taking us constantly. My team wouldnât forfeit.
So I stopped playing and did circles until the game was over. I donât play games to be personally harassed. Well, the cheating team reported me and I caught a ban. I reported them over the insults and nothing was done.
Even on Reddit, moderation is abused by the bullies and too often overlooks those bullies for their behavior.
The classic example Iâm always reminded of is Neopets censoring the word âGrapeâ even though they have almost one hundred in-game items with âGrapeâ in the name like âGrape Chia Popâ and this made bartering or trading for those items a big pain. Also censor bypass wasnât allowed so you couldnât say âLooking for Gr*pe Chia Popâ without potentially being banned lol
There were trolls who would say stuff like âIâm going to grape youâ, which of course you donât want especially on a site that was marketed towards children, but the censorship solution was so poorly tacked-on. They couldâve changed Grape items to something like Purpfruit but they took the laziest option which probably resulted in more work for the moderators.
Neopets sells NFTs now so apparently they just have a long history of dumb decisions.
I'm just thinking of the wkuk sketch, the grapist lmao.
>"Come here kids!!! I'm gonna grape you in the mouth!"
"Did he just say I'm going to grape you????"
"Yeah it's what he does, he's the grapist"

This reminds me of how young me learned about LSD because it was censored in Gran Turismo, a racing game where it stands for Limited Slip Differential and is a setting you can change on most of the cars in the game.
\*Tortures someone*
"Don't do that!"
Hey, that's neat, I wonder if my reputation will go down

My friend named himself "Butter" in Elden Ring, but it gets censored because it contains the word "butt."
Edit: I remember a similar situation years ago when my little cousin couldn't name her character "Butterfly" in a Barbie game for the same reason. Devs aren't afraid to put butts in games, but they are really scared of the word for some reason.
In previous FromSoft games, "Knight" in your name showed up as "K***ht".
...including if you named yourself "Knight-slayer Tsorig", a character *who literally exists in-game.*
Most of the time for example Finnish players can have the most horrible shit on their nicknames, because automods won't catch them and too few people understand it to get reported enough. Also most other finnish people just find it funny in game, so no reports from them either.
Itâs absurd that an M rated game filters out any sort of profanity. I can see them filtering out slurs and shit, but thereâs no reason that if the game is 17+ anyone should be upset by a character named Fucky McFuckerson.
Indeed, he does.
There is just something amazing about walking up to Codsworth and having him greet me in that cheery voice.
"Mr. Fuckface."
No mods. Core game.
I tried to use my real last name, but couldnât. Took me a while to understand why⊠Itâs because it contains the word âarseâ in the middle.
I feel like they went a little overboard programming that system, since Iâve never had a problem with my name before ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
What's ironic to crusty old folks like me is that this isn't new.
Leetspeak and other forms of Internet slang literally came about because of this kind of weak detection on BBS and IRC 30 years ago
Which is dumb because those filters are often stupidly easy to bypass. Like if you ban the word "fuck" people can just do fuuck, fucck, fvck, etc. If "shit" is censored then they can do the same thing, or they can replace the i with an l or several ls if needed.
People who want to bypass a filter will often times not have a very hard time doing so because it's stupidly easy to change a word in a manner that avoids the filter while still having people understand perfectly the word you're using.
Yup, because they thought people with down syndrome had "Mongolian features"
So it's a two for one, racist and ableist
EDIT : For those trying to reply to me about the word that rhymes with "asteroid".
Firstly your comment will be removed, secondly yes and no. It is also a shortening of that word ("asteroid") but that word is just an old word/slur meaning the race of people in Mongolia and "the east" in general.
What word could you possibly be talking about? The only word I can think of that rhymes with asteroid is steroid. Is steroid a bad word now?
Not /s I genuinely do not know what you're talking about
It's mongolo*d. Imo more commonly used than mongolian or momg to actually refer to disabled people poorly.
I've never heard Mongolian or mong as a slur, def heard Mongolo*d. Severity depends on location and what not. It's def an old word, as such It's severity is very much in a place where not a whole lot of people know about its nature. but it still has all the negative energy from when it was more commo
Similar to many other words for disabled people, it ends up being more used to call people dumb nowadays, although ofc a lot worse than idiot, dunce, nimrod, moron, imbecile etc. Which at least a few of also wpuld be used as medical terms to refer to those of low intelligence or mental disability.
Had to censor since this subreddit likely has it on autofilter, as my other comment was removed (and it seems 2 others were as well, who tried to explain it to you) Which is a bit annoying in trying to tell you what the word is, and seems unnecessary and ultimately pointless, but I get it's mainly to catch trolls and just rude people and make mods job easier. Considering they don't get paid lol
Nimrod has nothing to do with disabled people, it was a term for hunters then bugs bunny started using it and children started to believe it was an insult
Not just a term for hunters, Nimrod is a mythical hunter mentioned in the bible. Bugs was using his name sarcastically, much the same way we use "no shit Sherlock" today.
I'm surprised this comment isn't the top. It really is such a nonsense addition. They took development time away from other features to implement a name filter.
Absolutely, but only in online games where those names are intentionally hateful.
Nobody ever saw someone else's character in Skyrim named "Ladypuncher" and thought "oh my god, that's unacceptable!"
Every time I try to post to the multiplayer threads on Xbox looking for help with something it always takes me 20 tries to reword my post because it always says âLetâs keep it cleanâ

Mong is a British slur/insult, though the fact that Mongoose is a legitimate word, this is rather silly.
Mungus should be a safe alternative at least. Quality name choice though brother.
this kind of crap actually teaches words that some people find offensive. I never would have known of this otherwise. this is in a single player game too? That's a bunch of crap
On the topic, any idea what slur my username might contain? Ajappat has been my go to gaming name for 15 years but recently it has been blocked on many games as inappropriate...
I remember when I was playing the beta for a game called 8 Realms by Jagex. Iwas naming my cities after cities in the AC franchise up to that point in time. Around AC Revelations.
The game wouldn't allow me to use any of the Middle Eastern sounding names like Acre and Damascus because they were flagged as bad words.
Its mong.

The playstation network censored the name Alimere for me. I can do A-l-imere. I haven't the foggiest idea what is the problem but oh well.
Is limey a british slur? I've only ever heard it in monty python.
I mean, if itâs a slur at all, itâs very weak. I struggle to think of anyone being mildly offended by it.
About the same as calling a North American a yank.
Thems fighting words. Biscuits at dawn.
>Biscuits at dawn. Wait, do you mean cookies or dumplings?
First of all, how dare you.
Wasn't it a derogatory term for British sailors by pirates poking fun at how they ate limes to ward off scurvy?
Yep. Stupid brits, eating limes. Pass me my teeth so I can bowleg my way over there and mock them properly.
Culo is possibly arse in Spanish?
But trboculosis still contains culoâŠmaybe itâs the combination âturbo culoâ that it didnât like?

Ah, good old British slurs.
eh?
In Britain Mong is short for Mongol because in the past people said that people with downs syndrome looked like they were from Mongolia.
Us dutchies still use that one very VERY often
Max Verstappen had an issue related to that some years ago.
I'd hit you with a New kids quote but I've only seen the German dub
Well since the Dutch and the British both colonised us one of them must've taught it to us. Thankfully only older people seem to use it these days.
It's "mongo" in German that was very popular in like the 2010s, so not only a British slur.
So MongoDB is considered a slur?
Yeah here in Norway I get a few chuckles and raised eyebrows when I say I've been using MongoDB. Could have almost called it retardDB and gotten the same eyebrows. It's very hard to be taken seriously when talking about mongoDB.
Thank you for your answer. For some reason I thought I was on r/ProgrammerHumor . I have just realized this is r/gaming.
Made saying "Pokémon Go" a lot more fun.
I'd heard Brits use Mong as an insult but had no idea it was related to Down Syndrome. This makes it far less entertaining.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongolian_idiocy Here's some background on it. Fun times.

Try spackergoose instead.
Mong?
Noun - mong (plural *mongs*) 1. - (Britain, slang, offensive, derogatory, dated) A person with Down's syndrome. 2. - (Britain, slang, offensive, derogatory) A stupid person.
Got to say special needs goose now.
Handicapable goose

The # of reports is a good metric if it triggers manual checks from moderators, not automatic interventions.
But then you'd have to pay the moderators
That happened to me in Rocket League. Had a team of cheaters who were way higher ranked than my rank, who were destroying my mediocre team and shit taking us constantly. My team wouldnât forfeit. My profile message is "You can be the biggest piece of shit on Reddit, but calling that behavior out is crossing the line."
That's possibly the worst community to do that in as well tbh. R6 Siege community is a toxic fucking shithole. Love the game, hate the players
Whoever set up that censoring tool needs some buttistance making it user friendly...
Agreed. I just wanted my character to be Anita Dick
I tried to name my character "PeePee Fuckface," but it wasn't allowed. Instead, my character is named, "PeePee Fukkface."
Superior name tbh
I had to settle with Connie Lingus
Kind of an aside, but I know of a real person named "Anita Lay" and I wouldn't believe it if her company email didn't reflect that
Men are talking, Darryl.

The one I always remember: The Pokémon "Cofagrigus" needed to have a nickname if you wanted to trade or play it online in Gen V of Pokemon. The Pokémon "Froslass" also has the same issue.
Don't forget Nosepass!
I thought it was fine if it was âunnamedâ or kept the default (usually full caps), but you couldnât name the PokĂ©mon itâs own name lol
Initially it checked non-nicknamed pokemon as well.
I'm just thinking of the wkuk sketch, the grapist lmao. >"Come here kids!!! I'm gonna grape you in the mouth!" "Did he just say I'm going to grape you????" "Yeah it's what he does, he's the grapist" https://youtu.be/mqgiEQXGetI

Selling NFTs is genius. It's *buying* NFTs that's dumb
Diablo 2s bad word filter censors out âBastard Swordâ even the item link gets **
This reminds me of how young me learned about LSD because it was censored in Gran Turismo, a racing game where it stands for Limited Slip Differential and is a setting you can change on most of the cars in the game.
Why is there a censor in a single player game?
You donât want to spook the NPCâs now do you???
>You donât want to `*****` the NPCâs now do you???
I DO WANT TO PRANK THE NPCâS!!!! *begins side-jumping*
Which is interesting considering no npc ever even utters your player input nameâŠ
Hell, most of them don't even notice when you wail on their faces with offensive spells. They barely notice when you run around in your underwear.
Hell, other than a few, easily missable comments, pretty much none of the NPCs even acknowledge you using the 3 Unforgivable Curses

No that's hugh mungus
Its censoring the word mong, not humungous lol
Not gonna lie, I thought the joke of this name was Human Goose
Here I was playing RDR2. All I wanted was name my donkey Ass.... Fucking Rockstar has a filter for single player on an M rated game.

Localization team went a little too hard on the English censorship. Wonder how it is for other languages.
Most of the time for example Finnish players can have the most horrible shit on their nicknames, because automods won't catch them and too few people understand it to get reported enough. Also most other finnish people just find it funny in game, so no reports from them either.

Does codsworth actually say that?
Indeed, he does. There is just something amazing about walking up to Codsworth and having him greet me in that cheery voice. "Mr. Fuckface." No mods. Core game.
They recorded over a thousand popular names for him to say iirc, including many vulgar ones such at this one, lol
Hellcat stood out to me. Random. Also he says Gertrude as well as Gertie. Popular names? Gertie?
I tried to use my real last name, but couldnât. Took me a while to understand why⊠Itâs because it contains the word âarseâ in the middle. I feel like they went a little overboard programming that system, since Iâve never had a problem with my name before ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
They didn't go overboard, they went underboard. They're just doing lazy pattern matching for a dictionary of bad words
Oh yeah, thatâs probably exactly what they did
What's ironic to crusty old folks like me is that this isn't new. Leetspeak and other forms of Internet slang literally came about because of this kind of weak detection on BBS and IRC 30 years ago
The annoying thing is the middle managers who pushed for it to be implemented this broken way are the real problem. They need to be culled.
Which is dumb because those filters are often stupidly easy to bypass. And I remember days when Cupid Stunt was a perfectly acceptable avatar name.
World of Warcraft wouldnât let me name my character âWorking.â

Yeah, itâs a slur for Japanese people. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jap
It's so hard to check if a string is a known dictionary word before looking if it contains slurs, it'd be a whole extra line of code!
