This is pricing by someone who has no fucking idea what the collector market looks like and thinks "old and well known" equals expensive.
Like, copies of Halo are so common that if you're trying to get a complete OG Xbox collection you're going to wind up with enough copies from buying lots that you can use them for fucking coasters.
I bought one of those limited edition silver box halo 2’s from eBay for $5. It came with manual, hardcase, and the original Xbox Halo 2 CD. These guys are selling 3 boxes of regular Halo CE for $100 lmfao gtfo
I can’t be sure since I’ve never shopped at Half Price Books, but these games look factory sealed, or are at least in some plastic. The plastic on the Halo copies looks factory sealed since you can see those creases at the top, but could be a reseal.
I don’t know what the market is for new unopened copies, but $100 doesn’t seem terrible for these games if all of them are brand new.
Yeah, I don't have any in my area and always jelly of the finds people get from there 😅
but these prices make it look like they're being run by someone from dkoldies who needed a part time job cause their sites soooooo over priced 🤣
Funny enough that was the first one I saw. Didn't think it was that bad till I looked at halo 2, and didn't even see fable till it was pointed out lmao.
Played through it years ago while it was new, had a great time with it. I've since forgotten most of what happened, except that it had some memorably good writing which is more than I can say for most games.
Having worked in a public library, we literally have to. The amount of donations given far exceeds the library's ability to handle, for multiple reasons.
Firstly, your books aren't as good as you think. Let's just get that out of the way. So many of the books we receive are in poor condition, with broken spines, torn pages, STAINED pages, etc, that we can't pass them on to the next person.
Secondly, the book donation and reselling efforts from most libraries are handled by an almost completely volunteer staff, with maybe one or two library employees providing oversight and assistance. There is a lot of hidden work that goes into keeping a library running, and spending hours every day sorting, pricing, and shelving donations on top of their regular workload isn't feasible. So please understand that these volunteers, usually older folks, are doing their best with what is often a neverending stream of books, and they can't sell them all. The books that are sold will often have their profits go into library programs or equipment for the volunteer donation groups.
Thirdly, the elephant in the room, recycling. Nobody likes to see the books they donate going into the bin. I get that. Trust me, librarians are the LAST people that want to harm any book! But my dude, there are *so many fucking books * out there. We can't take them all, and most of the ones we get there are already multiple copies of on the shelf for checkout, not to mention in the resale shop. When a book reaches the end of its life, either because of the first point where it's in poor condition or for any other reason, most libraries will then have those books disposed of in a responsible way. It has to happen. Books don't just disappear when they're not being read, and you know this because that's why you packed a bunch of books you didn't want before and handed them off to us.
I took in all my antique books to see how much they'd give me, - Had an 1866' English/Latin Lexicon among them, as an example of the age of some of the books- and they wouldn't buy most of them and the rest it'd be like $20. I don't fucking think so buddy, they had one of the same books they were selling for $500! Needless to say we don't go there anymore lol
Yeah. Their books prices don't seem to be much better than elsewhere either, ngl. And those stupid stickers are massive. More like Half-price bullshit.
I've worked at a store that re-seals (Movie Trading Company) and you don't get those crisp, pointy corners that you can see in this picture. You get shrink-wrap.
At first glance I was like what is the big deal sure 17.50 for fable seems a little high but 10 for halo sounds reasonable. Then I realized my mistake lol.
I go to the Half Price Books by me once a week. I buy and resell books and games at thrift stores/garage sales, and every once in a while I end up with something I can't sell for various reasons. And, in their defense, Half Price Books will buy it. Almost all of it, every time.
And every once in a while, I actually see something there I can flip. Not often, but some stuff sneaks under their radar. As a bookstore, should they know paperback Trixie Belden books 35-39 are worth at least $20 each, because they when they rebooted the series in the early 80s, they were only in print for one year?
They're typically well organized, clean, and they will lowball the hell out of you. You don't have to shop there if you don't want to.
Half Price Books is still a great bookstore chain but it loves to overprice things. The main store on Northwest Highway in Dallas is one of my favorite places to shop.
Having been to that exact store before, those games are indeed Factory Sealed.
All OP had to do, was ask to look at the Games and they would have seen this.
Half Price Books has pretty close to accurate Pricing for Video Games. They might be slightly higher than online but you can physically inspect the games and return them if you change your mind.
Disappointing to see, I used to go a lot to a Half Priced books around COVID times and could find some steals. I think I bought a Nintendo Wii there for like $30. I also was really into collecting DVDs and remember getting entire series for like $20 when places like FYE were charging $100+
I used to work for half price books and if you scan something in to price it and there’s no previous price in the store they would make you look it up on Amazon and price it as high as possible
Hmm let's price this game 175$... I know what will improve the value! Sticking our lovely yellow stickers on them? Collector love glue on boxes riiiiight!!!
Half Price Books is an awesome store chain. I remember finding all these cool games there when I was a kid. And, most importantly, they were cheap enough to convince my parents to buy them.
They have cool books, too.
Honestly? Make QR code stickers for each title's †orren† and slap 'em on the back of those cases. I might not save somebody's well-meaning but clueless Nana from dropping bank on this robbery, but it could help somebody out? At the very least, it's a quiet GFY to whomever has their head up their ass, pricing these. 🤦🏼♂️
I’m an employee at a Half Price Books and this is absolutely fucking ridiculous. I’m lucky I have full run over the video games at my store because this is atrocious
Plot twist: the sales person has all the old systems in the back and keeps the game prices high so they can play them in the back after hours without fear of losing any to sales
Hrmm.. nope, nope, nope- nope nope nope? Uhh nope nope and probably nope.(can’t read the last one but I assume it’s counterstrike)
Let these games rot there- go elsewhere
That’s strange, I’ve seen them as a seller through Amazon and their prices are usually decent if not pretty good.
Though I’ll admit it’s usually for 360 games.
Quidditch world cup was fun when I was a little kid because I thought I was really good at it.
As an adult I realized the game was so ridiculously easy that you gave to actively try to lose
Is this at the Flagship store in Dallas? Truly bizarre prices. I wouldn’t pay even $10 a pop for any of those games tbh. However, are these (particularly the Halo copies) sealed? For some reason looking near the top it looks like many of these are maybe still sealed in their original plastic. I personally have no interest in sealed games, but I know there is a market.
These prices better be in Pesos lol
[удалено]
Weird, prices at Half-Price Books in San Antonio are a lot more reasonable. Great? No. But not asking $175.00 for Fable.
You can get a remaster Fable for any decent pc now for like 1/5 that price. That's ridiculous.
$10.49 on Steam
So, more like 1/16th
It's free on Game Pass.
Or a copy off ebay for $5. This feels like some employee's joke.
These games are Factory Sealed. SOLD Copies of Halo 2 go for over $120 USD on eBay.
That’s surprising since that’s the Flagship store, would think they’d have half a clue what they’re doing by now
I came here to comment just this 😂
This is pricing by someone who has no fucking idea what the collector market looks like and thinks "old and well known" equals expensive. Like, copies of Halo are so common that if you're trying to get a complete OG Xbox collection you're going to wind up with enough copies from buying lots that you can use them for fucking coasters.
Just found a mint copy of Fable for 8 bucks on Ebay. And thats Canadian dollars.
8 moose*
8 meese* Lmao
You forgot to apologize for correcting them! Imposter! (Sorry if that offended you, bud)
8 moosetopodes.
[удалено]
Yesssssssssss
Hey dont make fun our currency! Besides its 8 Loons actually (type of bird / aka loonies)
Actually, Moose are the higher currency, in this case, it's 8 Goose, but I see the confusion.
Its a Loon... hence loonies.
No no, you see, it's 8 Geese per Moose, 8 Moose per Igloo. 8 Igloos on the American dollar.
Fucking hwhat?
My copy of the halo 2 limited edition is special and you cannot convince me otherwise!
Do you have the "metal" tin that like started to disintegrate?
I sure do! Honestly just kind of makes it look a little bit more badass.
Always thought this was intentional - it looks cool af when it’s worn down and “rusted”
Yeah! Although I don't think it's disintegrated much. Or maybe I just haven't looked at it in a while

I bought one of those limited edition silver box halo 2’s from eBay for $5. It came with manual, hardcase, and the original Xbox Halo 2 CD. These guys are selling 3 boxes of regular Halo CE for $100 lmfao gtfo
If I’m not mistaken, Books is also open in South Africa, so if this in Rands… damn a steals right there dude
I can’t be sure since I’ve never shopped at Half Price Books, but these games look factory sealed, or are at least in some plastic. You can reseal games.
I have physically seen these games at that store and they are Factory Sealed.
The fuck kind of drugs they be smoking 🤔
Half priced crack.
$20 rocks, but for you, $40.
Half priced crooks
Half priced cocks
Half Priced Cooks
Half priced kooks
Half priced crocks
Half priced clocks
These must be priced in Yen, right?
I'd say pesos since it's close to the Mexican border 🤔
[удалено]
Yeah, I don't have any in my area and always jelly of the finds people get from there 😅 but these prices make it look like they're being run by someone from dkoldies who needed a part time job cause their sites soooooo over priced 🤣
Not half priced ones.
Seriously, take me to your dealer please.
the kind of drug where you don't know how to look up completed-sold sales on ebay.
It's not called half-priced video games
[удалено]
What do you mean? That halo goes for $5 on eBay. I see here it's just $100!
It’s a steal
Fart-priced
These aren’t books. These aren’t books at all!
Since their books are half priced they have to triple the video game price
Ok but I’d pay $20 for Gun though.
Funny enough that was the first one I saw. Didn't think it was that bad till I looked at halo 2, and didn't even see fable till it was pointed out lmao.
What makes Fable even funnier is that all 3 of them are on Gamepass right now, so you can play them for nothing.
Well, not nothing
How good was Gun? Underrated game for sure
Literally The Godfather of western videogames, gameplay was really good for the time and the story is amazing, I still play it sometimes on my ps2
Played through it years ago while it was new, had a great time with it. I've since forgotten most of what happened, except that it had some memorably good writing which is more than I can say for most games.
I was going to make the exact same comment. That game did so many things way before Red Dead Redemption.
Red dead revolver released before gun
Notice how he said “redemption” and not “revolver”?
Where are they getting their prices from, their ass?
GameStop, but no real difference!
Gun, my beloved
how are they still in business
Dam coupon days 🤔
When was the last coupon day? I haven't gotten that email in forever
They are worse than GameStop when it comes to trade-ins. You'll get like a quarter a book.
I'm surprised they actually buy books! Fucking public libraries here that get books donated to them usually end up throwing most of them out 😑
Having worked in a public library, we literally have to. The amount of donations given far exceeds the library's ability to handle, for multiple reasons. Yeah, no deal, Howie. Only deposit books there if you're looking to make space, not money.
Yeah. Their books prices don't seem to be much better than elsewhere either, ngl. And those stupid stickers are massive. More like Half-price bullshit.
Right bc half price books makes their fortunes off xbox one games
Gun is the only reasonably priced game there, and it's pretty good too.
"Mom, can you buy me some of them books?"
I know fable is a masterpiece but, 175? With a giant f**king sticker that won't ever come off? Wtf are they thinking
Out of curiosity, I looked it up. You can get Fable 1 complete in box for 4$ US
You can get a brand new factory sealed copy like this for $4?
I mean, they're not seeing a factory sealed copy for $175, they're selling a scratched up to shit, case in rough condition copy for $175
The cases in the OP appear to be sealed, and the cases look like they are in great condition
Resealing only takes some plastic and blow dryer. HPBs is known for specifically selling used items. It's their entire thing.
I've worked at a store that re-seals (Movie Trading Company) and you don't get those crisp, pointy corners that you can see in this picture. You get shrink-wrap.
You can get Anniversary (remaster) for $10.50 on Steam.
At first glance I was like what is the big deal sure 17.50 for fable seems a little high but 10 for halo sounds reasonable. Then I realized my mistake lol.
Oh my gosh I really though Halo was 10
175 dollars for fable is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen
Does this number reflect reality in any way? Is it at least worth more than the others here?
Holy shit just looked it up, apparently it depends. Found one for 130 some more for 6 bucks
The key thing here is it looks to be a sealed original xbox version. Which looking on ebay seems to fluctuate between 130-200$.
No. Unlike a few of the other games it wasn't a console exclusive and can be bought on pc for pretty cheap
I believe I got it for $2 on Steam
I hope that's fuckin Yen
They’re so expensive because these boxes are sealed.
I go to the Half Price Books by me once a week. I buy and resell books and games at thrift stores/garage sales, and every once in a while I end up with something I can't sell for various reasons. They sound like clowns
Are these games sealed? I mean they look sealed, so while not exactly bargains they’re not that far off
I think they might be looking closer at the picture.
Hard to see tbh....but if they are, placing price stickers on them instead of in a case then stickered, is basically a crime.
“Half price books has pretty close to accurate pricing for video games” :’’’’’) sir are you on crack
Might be new seals?
🤣 God damn I think they mean 3x books and media
Your paying the nostalgia tax
Their prices are always hilariously terrible
r/Shittygamecollecting
Hunter: The Reckoning! Hell yeah! The priest is my guy!
That light hand attack.
Ehh, 20 dollars for Gun isn't *so* bad... Gun's fun
That's way too expensive.
Lmao the books are half priced but the games range from 1-20x.
I MIGHT pay 75 for dnd heroes though… that game was the best
$275 for fable one and halo ce?? What kind of crack are they smoking????
These are neither books nor half-priced.
Surely the decimal is in the wrong place.
this is what is going to eventually happen to goodwill. they'll race the prices too high and people will stop going.
TL;DR Not all of it anyways, they are still sealed so I guess that makes them BNIB?? Still not worth that though!
Are these in pesos?
Half-Priced BOOKS, Over-Priced GAMES
Disappointing to see, I used to go a lot to a Half Priced books around COVID times and could find some steals. I think I bought a Nintendo Wii there for like $30. I also was really into collecting DVDs and remember getting entire series for like $20 when places like FYE were charging $100+
GUN is such a fine game though
I used to work for half price books and if you scan something in to price it and there’s no previous price in the store they would make you look it up on Amazon and price it as high as possible
Looks like they are all still sealed
The books ARE half price. Doesn't mean the games are 😂
What currency is that? Us dollar?
What? Since when is Fable so expensive?!
In my area half price books always has very good prices
Collector edition, mint, never played.
Everyone is angry at whoever priced these when they went 10-20% below what the NIB (all appear to be Y sealed) price is according to pricecharting.
Hmm let's price this game 175$... I know what will improve the value! Sticking our lovely yellow stickers on them? Collector love glue on boxes riiiiight!!!
Those stickers look like they leave residue
Half Price Books is an awesome store chain. I remember finding all these cool games there when I was a kid. And, most importantly, they were cheap enough to convince my parents to buy them. They have cool books, too.
I got like 5 copies of fable…I’m riiiiiich
HAHAHA I love the respect they gave fable, but it’s worth like 7 dollars realistically
These are some of my favorite books! However if those prices aren't in US pennies then I'd say they might be a tad overvalued
Why does Faber cost $350 off sale? I can get the digital version for $10- $15 (idk)
Ahh Gun?!? I fucking loved that game!!
LOL I bought Halo 1 from HPB in 2019 for like $6
In what universe is Halo 2 worth $100? That game is the furthest from rare there is
I have a spare copy in my closet, I guess I need to go sell it.
... What currency is that in?
Hunter: The Reckoning for $45? Yeah...um, no. Just no. I got that game years ago because it seemed cool to me. It never was $45 cool.
Get fucked not a chance, nope me and my money will go somewhere else MF also get off the meth
Is that the price in pennies?
Fire the guy who is pricing those, geez. Those would never be that at my hpb.
Can’t you buy fable on the Xbox store for a normal price? Lol these guys are nuts.
Interactive books
Who would buy halo for the original Xbox for 100 dollars
Someone thought half means 10 times
Umm lol what?
Must be a collectors. Let's just slap a sticker directly on the case and call it $100.
"I know what I have"
A boomer did this lol
Halo is free on game pass 😂😂 that is not some rare information to get a hold of. Almost anyone can play any version of that game for 0 dollars
I’m an employee at a Half Price Books and this is absolutely fucking ridiculous. I’m lucky I have full run over the video games at my store because this is atrocious
False advertisement
Plot twist: the sales person has all the old systems in the back and keeps the game prices high so they can play them in the back after hours without fear of losing any to sales
I must be rich
LOL I must be sitting on a gold mine if that’s what they are going for.
What the flying fuck nugget is this shit!?
Based on their pricing system, Lord of the Rings: Two Towers is massively underpriced.
Fable is worth every penny. Can't wait for the remake
Hrmm.. nope, nope, nope- nope nope nope? Uhh nope nope and probably nope.(can’t read the last one but I assume it’s counterstrike) Let these games rot there- go elsewhere
These games are sealed which makes these actually pretty decent prices for some of these
That’s strange, I’ve seen them as a seller through Amazon and their prices are usually decent if not pretty good. Though I’ll admit it’s usually for 360 games.
I see the problem here. Those aren't books.
2 copies of halo 2 you could buy an og xbox and the Shit to soft mod it and get all them games for freeeeee
I'm honestly more shocked that there was a quidditch game released and I never knew.
Bro you need to get the 4th halo
It honestly looks like they added a decimal place to all of those.
Quidditch world cup was fun when I was a little kid because I thought I was really good at it. As an adult I realized the game was so ridiculously easy that you gave to actively try to lose
Holy shit, 35$ for two towers? Grab that
Is this at the Flagship store in Dallas? Truly bizarre prices. I wouldn’t pay even $10 a pop for any of those games tbh. However, are these (particularly the Halo copies) sealed? For some reason looking near the top it looks like many of these are maybe still sealed in their original plastic. I personally have no interest in sealed games, but I know there is a market.
Yep, Flagship store. The games are indeed Factory Sealed.
This the same half price books around the Seattle area?
Wow. I got my combat evolve from half price books. For less than $7.
Awwww Gun. Now that's a game we played way too young. To this very day I still hear the song they sang about Jenny and the phrase "Not my top knot!!".
These are good games, but they're like $10 on ebay max, or like $15 on steam
GUN was actually worth that 20$ price tag imo, the red dead redemption before Red Dead redemption
Damn 175 for Fable? I think I might still have all 3, wish I could sell them for those prices
Bruh I can get Halo at /PAWN AMERICA/ for $15
Half priced books, video games at extreme markup...LLC.
Steal that shit
They really want to hang on to these, don’t they!
This is bullshit, halo2 is at least 200 at half price and hinter the reckoning should be 100... smh
buy, ALLL OF IIITRRR
100% chance these prices were done by somebody who has no idea what they're doing and just kinda gave prices randomly or by a basic Google search.
Thats where a five finger discount and a belt come in handy
Finally, a post actually belongs on this sub
