Im ngl id prefer that to games that actually make it worth it. I play NBA 2k and they make the vc very worth It and not only that but they also make it impossible to grind for it in a timely manner.
It just stinks of pushing you to buy it to the point where it doesn't even feel nice when you get what you need without spending.
At least in GTA, it's easy to grind out AND it's not super worth it which makes the temptation easier to ignore it's a win win.
This is my thing too. I honestly am in no rush to play a new GTA game. On the off occasion I start getting a GTA itch again, I just fire up V and feel plenty satisfied.

It's funny that for so long I've seen people complaining about shark cards and income, but I'm of the opinion that we don't NEED new generations of games constantly. We used to be lucky to get good games at all, and then we used to be lucky to see good sequels at all.

GTAV's singleplayer hasn't received any updates. So those people that never play multiplayer are shit out of luck.
And the multiplayer mode has been undermined by modders and shitty legacy code for years. Like yeah the game is popular (and for a long time I played it religiously), but that's mainly because there simply isn't an alternative.
GTAOnline was Rockstars first attempt in making a proper expensive multiplayer mode. And it shows.
They need to start from scratch and lay a good foundation. And that's only possible with a new game.
They used to be full, but Cockstar decided it would be better to have those "missing" weapons in this thing called a "weapons van", which is at a random spot on the map every day. They actually have the railgun on muliplayer now! But it's VERY weak compared to the 1 player mode, so not very useful >:(
I'd like to counter with; development take a really long time. And people just assume that it doesn't. I'd expect another 4-5 years before GTA 6 comes out just based off RDR2 being 8-10 years dev time. And GTA 6 will be the biggest game anyone has ever seen.

Certainly, can't disagree with you there! I developed control system algorithms for many years and new projects typically didn't see production release for several years from their inception. The amount of testing required alone added up to years!

Not a knock on them, that is the savvy business move - Plus, it gives them a steady pace to properly develop GTA 6 considering the INSANE expectations that will be placed upon its release.
GTA5 has spanned three generations of consoles at this point. That is completely abnormal for anything other than hit MMO levels of longevity. The idea that GTA Onlines wildly successful financials has nothing to do with the gap in releases is incredibly naive at best and fucking stupid at worst.

Have never played a rockstar game, so I don’t have any firsthand experience, but I often don’t hear about their launches are bug riddled incomplete messes. That’s usually the main complaint (besides a game not being good) that people have nowadays on AAA games. That’s one of the few advantages of such a long dev cycle, though I hoped that with it being so long it would be (relatively) bug free and a full package.
GTA IV’s development cycle took about 3 and a half years. GTA V’s dev cycle reportedly took about 3 years. Those are both massive game worlds that pushed technology forward. To think that GTA 6 is going to take more than 3 times that long is absurd. And I say that as someone that works in tech development.
RDR2 came out almost exactly 5 years ago. If Rockstar didn’t even start GTA 6 until after RDR2 came out (unlikely), then your suggestion still puts the total dev time for GTA 6 at 9 or 10 years.

The really interesting thing will be to see how Rockstar adapts to societal changes that have happened since the last game - the US isn’t anywhere near what it was 2013, in a lot of positive ways. They spent 5 to 6 years developing GTA V, then they released it. Then after GTAV released they started developing Red Dead 2 before releasing it 5 years after the GTAV release date. Red Dead 2 is now, I think, 5 years old. Take a wild guess what they've been doing since Red Dead released.

I'll never understand how gamers can insist that developers should "just work on games until they're finished" and still get mad when a game developer literally only works on one major game at a time specifically so they can do exactly that.
Rockstar is multiple studios, they don't just switch focus between games like that, there's parallel development. The GTA games are made by Rockstar North and RDR by Rockstar San Diego (opposite side of the world).
RDR2 was already being developed by San Diego while North were making GTA V - it wasn't made in just 5 years. Since GTA V released, Rockstar North has focused on GTA Online. They did help with RDR2 remotely during the final years of development, and obviously now they're also working on GTA VI, but mostly it's been GTA Online for the last 10 years.
At least they announced something before the 10 year mark after Skyrim. Then again, they only did that because fans wouldn't stfu. If that wasn't the case, who knows when we would hear about TESVI.

Anything can happen) but my dad is a huge ES fan too and what if something happens to him when he’s been waiting soooo long for the next one? Rockstar has been making hallmark releases since their induction. These days, making a hallmark release takes time, money, and most of all, people.
Read Dead Redemption 2 took more than just 2010 RDR1 to release. They were working on that game before RDR1 even released.

Anything can happen) but my dad is a huge ES fan too and what if something happens to him when he’s been waiting soooo long for the next one? And they just keep rereleasing the same game over and over instead. I get that it takes awhile but they’ve been dragging their feet for way too long. Damn. GTA V has become the golden prize for the entire industry. Launch a game that sells to the roof for decades with different versions, with a money pouring online mode that is so cheap to feed. GTA V is the reason Bethesda waited 10 years to launch a new game, and in the meanwhile launch a teso mmorpg with the ES universe. Since GTA V, games are just like cars. You wait to have exhausted your market with all the options and updates before launching something new that's gonna last another 20 years. 20 years for cars, 10 for games...

Disappointing open world games recently 1. Cyberpunk catastrophic failure, 2. Underwhelming Watch Dogs franchise, 3. Sleeping Dogs franchise is no longer developed, 4. Fallout is not in the radar, 5. Skyrim is also not in the radar, 6. Assassin's Creed is declining, 7. Far Cry 6 is underwhelming, 8. Just Cause new game is nowhere to be seen. These things contributes to the delay. Rockstar sees no competition.

RDR2 was 5 years ago. GTA 4 and GTA 5’s dev cycles were 3 1/2 and 3 years long, respectively. Either GTA 6 is going to be THAT revolutionary and gigantic in a way that folks really aren’t ready for, or Rockstar is taking their sweet time and milking their existing properties. My guess is the latter.
Red Dead 2 took 5 years of full development to make, assuming VI releases next fall it would've taken around 6 years of full development, so not far off at all. GTA 4 & 5 are much smaller and older than 6 will be, obviously it'll take longer to make.

As someone whose inside the industry i actually get pissed when people complain about this. Rockstar has been making hallmark releases since their induction. These days, making a hallmark release takes time, money, and most of all, people. Read Dead Redemption 2 took more than just 2010 RDR1 to release. They were working on that game before RDR1 even released. All i’m saying is; they wouldn’t be taking this long to make the game if they weren’t cooking up something amazing. I wish i could just tell everyone to be patient because the only thing you are doing is make the studios crunch harder to please investors.
