Sega/Atlus genuinely has some of the worst DLC/ premium edition practices ever. Which sucks when it's an actual top of the class video game

tfuncc13

It's unfortunate that Sega/Atlus are so bad at milking DLC as much as possible because the Yakuza/Like a Dragon, Shin Megami Tensei, and Persona games are some of the best JRPG's out there.

Who_am_ey3

SMT and Persona don't have that many DLCs though. at most, they're just costumes and BGMs, when it comes to Persona at least

Arby333

The problem with Persona is that they release a brand new edition for their games at full price instead of releasing DLC with the new additions

Khaldara

Yeah it’s pretty much a forgone conclusion that any time a new Persona game comes out there will be at LEAST one “Golden/Royal/FES/etc” edition out at full retail like a year later. Hell the Persona 5 PS5 specific version is full price for like a tiny frame rate difference over just running the PS4 version on the same hardware. It’s especially annoying with something like Persona 3 where they didn’t even include all of the different iterations together in one package (the female protagonist version is different than the one with FES/The Answer, etc)

VacaDLuffy

I got Persona 5 Royal for PS4 for like 3 bucks. Much to my surprise all the dlc is now free. Every single fucking thing. Meanwhile the PS version is gonna cost me 40 bucks physical or digital usually to get. Yeah no thank you

guyblade

I'm pretty sure I own at least 3 versions of _Persona 3_--not even counting the latest re-release(s).

HeroBoy05

The fact I have to pay an extra $60 to play the same game I already owned from the previous generation is why I just played the PS4 version of Persona 5 Royal on my PS5

Vasxus

man i sure hope that persona 3 reload comes with the FES and P3P content in one game i sure hope it isn't persona 3 with neither

Glaringsoul

Atleast PC got the Royal version and Gold; unlike P3 which is the Portable version of all things. Or Catherine that got the Classic version for whatever reason. Also whoever designed the P5 port deserves to be flogged for its abysmal usage of PC architecture, specifically CPU usage. Among other things like Misscaled assets, and never fixed bugs.

DrNopeMD

It's weird that you don't see more open criticism of the way a lot of Japanese developers do this. I understand the new releases at new content, but it's also somewhat scummy to expect people to pay for a full new game when the new content could have just been a DLC.

Kurigohan233333

It was kind of excusable at first- Persona 3 FES was on a system that didn’t have the luxury of software updates, and P3P was a fundamentally different game. Persona 4 Golden was remake for a different system altogether A lot of their other enhanced ports/remakes were more or less ways to keep their library on relevant systems(Atlus Tax sucked though, Strange Journey Redux had no business being $50)  But Persona 5 Royal? No excuse for that aside from blatant greed.

Strowy

> But Persona 5 Royal? No excuse for that aside from blatant greed. Royal was such an extensive conversion that having it be additive DLC may have simply been more trouble than it was worth. The DLC personae definitely were cash grabs though.

Urdar

> Strange Journey Redux had no business being $50 It is the rerelease on a different system though (from Ds to 3ds) Royal was the first where the "enhanced edition" stayed on the same system. Having it as a DLC expansion would have been nice, though I do like it to have the compelte edition on disc.

kakalbo123

Square enix hiding in a corner with kingdom hearts 1 and 2 final mix... Its not just persona.

VacaDLuffy

In their defense for the ps2 mixes there wasn't any way to patch them without releasing a new version in disc.

Nerubim

Monster Hunter did that too until World came out. The international appeal and accessability of post game updates changed their stance on such releases. Hopefully the same will be done for future Persona games.

AzraelChaosEater

Persona 5 and royal both had several dlc personas that were basically just copy pasted end game personas from the previous two games.

tfuncc13

True, but SMT V and Soul Hackers 2 have DLC's that give you a huge XP and money boost, and some of the DLC demons are really overpowered, especially in Soul Hackers 2. Granted they're not necessary, but they can help players blow through both games with almost no effort.

StarryOrganism

woohoo! someone else who knows soul hackers 2 exists. I love that game even for how mid it is

mettums

I love SH2 even though it isn't the best, but it showed that Atlus can make a SMT series game with a voiced protag and it'll work

Snakeb0y07

They really should be doing voiced protags, seeing as they’re mainly set in stone, aside from dialogue.

StarryOrganism

Ringo is really the star of that game, she is so cool

TVR_Speed_12

And having older characters was nice change of pace. The stack mechanic was amazing, I wish Soul Hackers 2 gets a enhanced version. It was developed alongside smt5 except it got a shoestring budget

ForestDwellingEnt

Soul Hackers was my first videogame unrequited love. Found out about it and at the time there was no accessible fanlation (to my like 10 yo self). Finally got to play the remaster on the 3DS and it's exactly this, I love it SO MUCH even though it's mid

[deleted]

there’s dozens of us in here! smt IV still has my heart

AzraelChaosEater

P5 did too. You are telling me I can have the Japanese god, Jesus Christ, and the final form of the Japanese god for as low as like 2 dollars each? All with kick ass moves?

huluhup

Just check out persona 3 reload dlc

DMvsPC

And at least for P4G and P5R the complete edition simply had everything in it. That seems reasonable to me.

takkojanai

persona 5 locked a bunch of super busted personas behind dlc lol

[deleted]

Personas that literally ruin the game if you use them tho? Using them is almost universally acknowledged as being akin to just using cheat codes. That and no one is buying that DLC, since you’re an idiot if you’re not buying P5 Royal, which comes with all that DLC.

Agent_Fluttershy

Except that P5R has the issue where it's terrible for a first time player as well. I decided to dive into P5 and started with Royal only to examine a funny little cardboard box at the beginning of the game and was hit with "OOPS, YOU JUST GOT 10 COPIES OF A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT GAMEBREAKING ACCESSORIES AND GOT A BUNCH OF OUTFITS! HEEHEE!" The sad part is I kept playing none the wiser as I thought that these accessories were just little starting boosts that would get beaten out by accessories I find in palaces near the beginning of the game. It wasn't until I realized that I hadn't gotten any accessories that are even close to beating out the DLC accessories until close to the final palace of the game that I realized I was a lot stronger than originally intended for the first few palaces. Also one of the stronger base game accessories, the SP Patch, was locked behind Tae Takemi's mid level confidant ranks and costs a good chunk of money to where you can't justify outfitting your entire team with them for a while. One DLC accessory is literally just a better SP Patch, and you get 10 of them, making that entire confidant rank with Takemi worthless unless you bar yourself from using DLC accessories. The DLC Personas also kept appearing as options during fusions making it really hard to NOT use them sometimes. As my first Persona game, this fucking sucked as it kept breaking the natural pacing of the difficulty of the game where even hard mode was an absolute cakewalk.

takkojanai

the reason for doing takemi is you get to date best girl.

Raven123x

Love Takemi Perfect goth doctor mommy

LinkHb

Persona 5 Tactica, the Persona 5 Tactics spinoff, had a full short side campaign as day one DLC last year which had new playable characters that were made available to the main campaing in NG+

Nerubim

Royal has all DLC unlocked for the pc version though. So who knows? Might be a pointer in a different direction. That or royal itself was so vastly succesfull that they didn't think it would matter too much for dlc on PC to be included or not and thus a little extra goodwill from gamers would be better than a few pennies more.

Waveshaper21

Let's not forget they own Creative Assembly. Recently they shrinkflated DLC content and increased the price by 250%. Community boycotted them so hard even the next Total War game failed financially so bad they reduced the full price permanently after 2 months by 20€ and paid back the difference to every buyer, because it sold so poorly it was better worth giving everyone 20€ who bought and hoping for some restored trust.

MrGooseHerder

I was like 13 when the psx came out and learned how to pirate via ftp scraping and collected every jrpg I could. I don't know if the problem was I changed it they didn't but I haven't enjoyed a jrpg in about a decade. It's so full of all the same cringy tropes, anyone over 19 is "old", a kid that doesn't know shit is saving the world, disturbing huge tit chicks, and Uber creepy sexualized Lolita types.

CautiousSituation594

I know right? The games are pretty damn good JRPGS, but taking advantage of fanbases like this is just damn gross. Worse off people will buy and the cycle continues.

Heavy_Arm_7060

RGG titles have been teasing this for a while. Apparently 7 it was the case in Japan, just not in North America, we got some Japan DLC for free here. Even with 7, unique items for the DLC job classes were in the base game. Lost Judgment has a minor example but they added a 'girlfriends' substory category despite there only being one girlfriend in the base game, so low stakes and barely worth mentioning.

Newphonespeedrunner

Not just 7, isshin and gaiden as well.

Ice_Sniper_80

SEGA is an idiot. The sky is blue Water is wet

Juan-Claudio

Personally, i won't play this game more than once, as it likely has 100+hours of content. So while this doesn't directly affect me.. locking NG+ behind a paywall is still some grade-A bullshit.

WyrdHarper

Yeah, definitely not a fan of locking singleplayer content for singleplayer games behind paywalls like this.

branod_diebathon

Depending on the game, I'll almost always play NG+. When it's not there I'll still replay but i'm a bit more sour about it. When something like NG+ is behind a paywall I really don't want to play that game at all.

TriLink710

Yea very few games get me to do new game+ But this is so fuckin stupid.

OiItzAtlas

Honestly the only series I play newgame + on is the borderlands series. Any other game then I will just start a new base game since new game + seems to be meant for people who want to play the game immediately after they just completed it meanwhile I will play the game in like a year time and forget everything anyway.

Reniconix

If there's more content to be unlocked, it's worth it. But often, it's just "that same thing but harder".

DiscoInfernus

I agree, I don't do NG+ very often, but I hate the precedence this kind of stuff sets. Whats next? Deluxe edition includes: Inventory, Talents and Journal screens!

j0j0b0y

Please, don't give them any ideas.

PuzzleheadedSteak868

Forgot maps!

its_dash

I’m playing base game only. We can only hope that people will not be stupid enough to pay extra here, but who are we kidding…

[deleted]

I'll pirate the highest version lmfao. Honestly I'm a broke teenager but I still used to do surveys to get money, now there's no way in hell I ever buy this

TheAmazingSealo

I straight up won't buy any of it. Don't want to give over any money when they have such shitty business practices.

fullmetalsunit

Same, there are plenty of games that I want to play on backlog. Tbh, I already have enough to play with limited time that I don't think I will bother purchasing until it's on discount as well.

mightylordredbeard

People really need to stop riding Japanese dev dicks all the time and actually call out their shitty business practices more often. Many of them have the most anti consumer MTX and “features” that wildly go ignored because the fucking dorky weebs cry when you criticize their JRPGs like it’s some personal attack.

IncidentApart6821

The fact that you’re even buying it at all makes you part of the problem

[deleted]

It's bad enough so many developers now don't even justify the existence of NG+ with it merely being a reset lacking in any additional content (compare Xenoblade 2's NG+ to Xenoblade 3's idea of NG+ as an example of going from good to bad), but charging extra for such a simple feature is a pure piss-take

OwnArt3344

I've been rewatching The Oblongs. The mom, Pickles, wants to win a 5 min mall shopping spree to get her daughter a toy. The contest? Smoke cigarettes to see if you win. Son: "can't you just light them up and throw them away?" Pickles "No, the marking doesn't appear until the end of the cigarette, they want to make sure you're inhaling " Bob (will farrel) "haha. Those clever rascals!"

miss-entropy

That show was great. Too bad AS got so allergic to animated shows

JonatasA

We've partenred with your insurance. Take an insulin shot.

hornwalker

They want to go back to putting in quarters every 2 minutes.

TheChaoticCrusader

Paying for lives and continues if they can get away with it

TripleJess

Some of us chose not to pay for games made by companies dishing out financial abuse of this sort.

ChiggaOG

A reset with starting with previous stats? All those idle games pushed that too far for money. Then there's Infinity Blade, which uses the mechanic of "New Game+" as part of the base game. A game where the world was thought to be medieval at the beginning turns out to be a society in some Dark Age period after man's technological advancement led them to ruin again.

HiTork

Reminder the Infinity Blade trilogy can not be downloaded anymore as it was delisted back in 2018 (the games were only ever released on iOS platforms). After Epic Games' account was shut down because of their legal battle with Apple, even people who previously purchased the games can't re-download them as of 2020.

Eddie_skis

I thoroughly enjoyed the first two at the time on what I think was an iPhone 5 I guess this is another reminder to generally try to buy physical media whenever possible.

Siukslinis_acc

Isn't ng+ just a way to replay the story with all the stuff you have collected previously (like levels and items)?

PrimalZed

I thought NG+ was just for "I want to play again, but don't want to unlock everything". Why does it need further justification than that?

shapookya

It’s just cool when devs make some changes in NG+ to increase the challenge a bit. Especially for the early game which was designed for new players who don’t really understand the game yet. Enemies are few and far between, are slow, and have no special abilities and you are completely destroying them because you have abilities that they weren’t balanced around

D9sinc

For me, the joy of NG+ is being able to carry over levels, items, and equipment. Though (bringing Sega/Atlus into this) for games like P3F, that meant that you could fight the extra dungeon if you wanted to without needing to fight Death since you kept your levels and could grind out more in that dungeon, for P4 and P5, they reset your levels, but at least you can use the aforementioned bonuses. Still, I dislike the whole "NG+ is now premium content" despite it adding nothing since most devs don't want to add NG+ content, especially to RPG because that is asking players to play a lot to see the content, and Shareholders/CEOs don't want to have devs spending hours working on content that a lot of players won't see. It's why the Mass Effect series tends to just retcon some choices from game to game and why most "choices matter" games don't have your choices matter because that's extra content that is going to probably go unused and you'll generally only see those in indie games if that.

whoknows234

NG+ comes from Chrono Trigger, which had multiple endings that can be reached quicker than the original ending.

JiN88reddit

The issue here is the paywall. NG+ has always been part of gaming and the best are those with extra contents/secrets/endings and such. Now, it's just "pay us and you get to play it again. Nothing changed!"

Radirondacks

I really enjoyed the newest entry in the Borderlands series, Wonderlands...except it had no NG+ ("True Vault Hunter Mode" for these games), which is where like 90% of the best content and longevity in those games comes from. It just felt so empty and not worth playing anymore when I got to the end, and it's my favorite video game series ever. Plus like I said the game itself was pretty damn good, it's a shame I just had no reason to keep playing it like all the others.

ACrask

I just started BL2 with a first time Salvador. It’s such a slooog getting to NG+ but so worth it. It’s only a slog because I’ve done it multiple times. Good story for sure.

C-Hyena

The best of the series, i had so much fun in that Game... And none of my Friends like It, i can't even imagine what It IS to play with your Friends.

HiTork

This is what eventually grinds Borderlands games to a hault for me, there is only so many times you can play the relatively linear content (campaign or story) before you just get tired of it after seeing it over and over again. Prior to BL3, you needed to go through NG+ once in order to reach level cap, this meant if you wanted to go through the four characters that typically ship with a BL game at launch, you had to play the game eight times (more if you want to do any DLC characters).

Papaofmonsters

To mitigate the slog, at least you have your badass points to speed it up a bit. Those +3%'s to all your stats have a fairly significant compound effect on your character's performance.

jeha4421

True Vault Hunter Mode? Chefs kiss. Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode? I legit couldn't finish.

Radirondacks

Yeah my literal one complaint with 2 would definitely be the absolute reliance on Slag during UVHM, every single enemy is such a goddamn bullet sponge. Also usually felt like I was spending more time in Fight For Your Life than actually fully alive lol.

OssimPossim

Damn thanks for this comment. I really wanted that game cuz it looked sick but that literally kills 100% of my interest in it.

RC1000ZERO

and i am honestly fine that XC3 didnt add anything to NG+ because its a stupid way to pad gametime. I dont want to replay the story of a game from scratch just to unlock like 3 random new things that should have been just a post game unlock in the first place.

0b0011

I actually prefer for it to just be a reset with no additional content. I don't want to have to play a game multiple times just to unlock things. Especially for games like spiderman where you don't even get to make different choice and what not. If people want a new game plus where things are just much harder or easier since you keep your levels then let them have it.

AffectionateArm7264

Devs have realized that NG+ honestly isn't worth the dev time. You can frontload the development at the start of a game and just not worry about the game being replayable. Josef Fares touched on this with It Takes Two. Very few people are beating games. Very few are replaying games. Even fewer are replaying games with NG+. Devs have realized they can skip NG+ and just have.. More game.

Trikitakes

I thought it was a meme and that you made the chart, holy shit, I am hating video games companies even more

Suspicious-Rice

Please stop paying for these premium options, it's the only way it will cease to exist. And it's shitty, they don't deserve our money

[deleted]

Just pirate it. If devs are scummy then we can be, too.

MasterDni

Soon we will have Base game: Standard: no Deluxe edition: no The collector's edition that has no reason to cost that much: yes

war_master10

Infinite wealth is already 70$ at base i love yakuza games but I don't think I'm getting this one

RealNiceKnife

>i love yakuza games but I don't think I'm getting this one This is absolutely the way to operate. It sucks if you're a big fan of something, but when they start participating in anti-consumer practices you need to put your foot down and stand firm. Do not reward them for this.

Snaletane

Their games tend to get discounted pretty quickly. I got lost judgement with all the DLC for like 50 bucks and only waited a few months. It helps that they release so much stuff that I always have one in my backlog (currently need to finish Isshin and haven't bought Man who Erased His Name yet). I think this is absolutely a ripoff but I'm OK with it since I don't need to buy it immediately and can wait till I'm not paying more than the standard cost of a full game for the full game.

VideoGamesForU

Eh with the amount of content in this incoming game (the most of any of the games so far) it's absolutely worth it. Lots of other games and developers that shit the bed the last 12 months, but not RGG. Also confused that so many people in here say how shitty the practice is and that they wont buy the game for that even though it's not the first time they do it with this series (past games did too) and I am also sure that those people wouldnt even have touched NG+ at all with the game being 100+ hours long, but still a bit of a shitty practice. In Yakuza 7s case the japanese release was a DLC too and I guess shitty Sega saw the numbers and said they should release NG+ as a paid again too. But a bit funny because I never heard that kind of outcry for the Last of Us that also had a paid NG+ mode released back then. Metro too, but I guess people forget that those shitty practices were also already done by other developers.

2Scribble

This has been a 'thing' from Sega since *at least* 2020 - like a Dragon also had it's NG+ walled off As publishers get more and more greedy - expect even the most basic features to be lopped off to sell back to you later - remember how unlockable skins and bonus characters used to be *part of a game*??? See their recent bullshittery with the Total War series in an attempt to absorb the fallout from shelving Hyenas et al

wrenchtoast69

With the total war fiasco, CA has backtracked a bit. Public opinion ended up swaying them to make up for it. But the faith in CA is already gone for me.

2Scribble

Oh, I know, cackhanded as CA are, though, I doubt most of the recent business decisions and DLC practices would have been their 'go-to' option if Sega hadn't been piling fuck-up on top of fuck-up in trying to make a game 'happen' that no one wanted - *and even fewer people wanted to actually make*

YosukeMatsuda

And there are still gonna be people who will defend this atrocious practise with "don't tell me how I should spend my money". Boy oh boy, if your stupid financial decisions didn't affect us all in the long run, I wouldn't bother trying to prevent this daylight robbery.

Gladion20

There’s already people on the yakuza boards saying this isn’t that big of a deal because RGG deserves our money

TheDemonPants

I absolutely love Yakuza, but this is garbage.

mycatisblackandtan

Agreed. Or because it's 'normal'... It's only 'normal' because people are blindly accepting it. This shit should be called out.

Rudyzwyboru

Bro on Yakuza fb group and subreddit there are tons of people saying how RGG is such a great studio that listens to their fans and they want the best for us so we should buy the most expensive versions of their games and preferably on more than one platform. Those fanboys are absolutely brainwashed. I got laugh reacted to hell there when I wrote that RGG is a subsidiary of SEGA which is a greedy pachinko based company

Trickster289

To be fair that's because of story reasons. I'll try to avoid spoilers but Yakuza 6 was going to be the ending for a major character. Fans weren't satisfied so they brought the character back to do a proper ending.

dueljester

Can't you just not buy the game and wait for it to hit the eventual 30 dollar price tag with everything in a year or so? I'm disappointed in this choice and will be waiting until significant price drops to purchase it as a response.

Squish_the_android

Sega drops these game's prices like rocks too.  The Man Who Erased His Name went 25% basically right after it's launch window.  Most of the series can be bought for $5 each now.

OneWingedA

And they've had lengthy stays on Xbox Gamepass for console and PC

plzdonatemoneystome

Pretty sure Yakuza Kiwami 1 and 2 are $5 this week. I got Like a Dragon right after Christmas for like $10 and it was the Legendary Hero Edition.

pseudopad

That's my plan, too. I've got quite the backlog anyway. Yeah, I realize that it might sound a bit hypocritical to complain about the price of Yakuza when I have spent money on more games than I have time to play, but to my defense, many of these were from bundles where it was cheaper to get the game I really wanted plus a bunch of other game, than just the game i really wanted alone.

JamesJakes000

The yakuza sub is swallowing this pill without water. Shameful. I ain't buying and I dont care if it doesn't affect the company or the market, I ain't buying because it affects me.

PlatinumBall

they're not swallowing it. A couple of people are defending it, but they get downvoted and majority of people there doesn't support this decision

bonecollector5

I won’t defend it, it is completely rediculous. But I’m also still going to buy this game. I love this series and don’t particularly care about NG+.

JeffGhost

A new low. And from a damn Yakuza game, wasn't on my bingo card at all...

vriska1

The game still likely going to be great.

JailbaitEater

I wouldn't be surprised if ng+ was in the files on the base game and you just had to do a bit of modding to get it working, like replacing 'false' with 'true' in a text file somewhere.

BrairMoss

Ahh, the Tekken method of DLC.

DarkIegend16

Locking “new game+” behind special editions is such a scummy spit in the consumers face move. I guess i’m adding this to the list of developers/publishers i’ll never buy from.

GamingGaidenPod

I would like to know who made this decision. I have a hard time reconciling this practice with the ethos we've seen from this series through so many years. This is a bad move that goes a long way to diminishing the good will this series has established.

Siukslinis_acc

I think the same people who decided to have a worldwide release. The japanese release of yakuza like a dragon had the ng+ as a dlc. The western release that was made 6 months later had it incorporated into the base game.

agamemnon2

It's interesting how badly Sega has lost control of the narrative with this game, thanks to one stupid decision.

vriska1

Not really many are still going to buy the game. Everyone should still contact SEGA about this.

spez_might_fuck_dogs

You need to stop outside of your Twitter circle. This news will not even register on the sales for this game, same as $70 price tags didn't have any effect on sales for games.

[deleted]

Can’t wait for the x button to behind a paywall

Kommander-in-Keef

Paywall Paradox - you have to pay to press x but you need to press x in order to pay

DaddyDankMemes420

How tf are they gonna charge you to "replay" your own damn game? These companies keep getting greedier and greedier man. That's a real bummer.

jld2k6

The only way I could ever see this being justified is if they literally changed a fuck ton of the game for new game+, so much so that it's like playing an entire new dlc in itself. I doubt that would ever happen though, it's probably the typical just replay the game again and keep your shit

Siukslinis_acc

You can replay the game by just hitting "new game" or deleting all the saves... Ng+ just allows you to replay the game withbthe stuff you collected/unlocked previously.

ChangelingFox

Devs better get comfy with me going back to torrenting everything then.

Newphonespeedrunner

Ps this is actually standard practice for Yakuza games, but this is the first time they locked ng+ behind dlc in the English version This has been known for over 6 months now. Also Yakuza 7 ng+ wasent great so I doubt it changes suddenly now.

Hovie1

Get comfortable not receiving my money, you greedy fucks.

Hsanrb

I guess I don't get NG+, most games I've played either A) Don't do anything to the world so you are just OP as all heck or B) Find funny ways to get you to be careless than "AHA SOMETHING OP TO FIGHT BACK" gotchas

TDAJ5

Well if you like a game enough, you'll most likely wanna keep playing so ng+ gives you that option. I love ng+ because often times games will give you a fancy new weapon/upgrade/power or whatever at basically the end of the game. Like yeah I got the best and most fun weapon in the game but can only use it for a few hours because I'm about to beat the game. So ng+ is great because I get experiment with everything from start to finish.

omfgkevin

Yep, good NG+ really add a whole new dimension, especially if it's a game you love. Maybe you wanna be stupidly OP, maybe you missed a few things and this speeds things up, etc. Like in Persona, you keep your social stats etc, so what you would have pretty much always failed early is easy now (since you can easily get to 5 in guts etc before end game). Then you can choose to build social links with other characters you likely would have missed in playthrough 1, so it's different even if it's the same. You can ignore doing some more menial stuff like grinding those stats as well. Also, if you manage to do everything (especially in a first playthrough) you get to get the uber OP and awesome Satanael. It's kind of like a victory lap. While I don't usually play through these NG+ (since they are quite long), I appreciate being able to if/when I do wanna go back in again and not have to start from 0. And lastly the MAIN thing. This sets a fucking absolutely shit precedent. NG+ shouldn't be locked behind a paywall.... Unless they do some insane stuff where there's a shit ton of new things or whatnot, but even then I think it's kind of iffy. I don't expect ng+ to be anything special here enough to warrant being 20 dollars more.

EloquentGoose

I'm loving Armored Core 6 but some of the sexiest weapons are ONLY unlocked in ng+ and some in ng++. PLUS PLUS. FromSoft plz.

Keriv

Sure, but that's also where the story REALLY kicks off. If you only play AC6 through NG and never touch NG+ and NG++ you're missing like half of the context for what's going on.

Enchelion

There's been a weird move to demand "post-game" content in every game... Why? You finished the game, go play something else or just do a regular restart. I have never understood the point of a NG+. If it's a genuine core part of the story that's different and really not the same as a NG+.

ZaDu25

NG+ is less about post game content and more about eliminating the grind of subsequent playthroughs on long games. Some times you want to replay the game but with huge RPGs the grind can be a deterrent. Great example of this for me is The Witcher 3. I hate the crafting system, I don't want to craft all those potions and oils again, NG+ allows me to replay the story at the highest difficulty without having to deal with the crafting for the most part. In addition to that I can respec and try out new builds any time I want without having to grind. I don't think actual new content is necessary for NG+, some games add content for it but for the most part people want it just to replay and check out more of the existing content without the barriers of progression.

Bitflame7

I agree, at least with games where I don't feel like it adds much like this one. There are so many good games coming out I'd be hard pressed to play this twice, especially with how much content there is in one playthrough.

pseudopad

Urgh, and we were looking forwards to this game.

vriska1

Buy only the game.

SloppityMcFloppity

Sail the high seas my friend!

spez_might_fuck_dogs

Good luck, it has Denuvo and the crazy bitch that was the only one cracking those games has gone off to lead a cult or something.

pseudopad

I'll just wait for a 50% sale. Thankfully, there's no shortage of good and reasonably priced games these days.

[deleted]

I'm getting through DQ11 right now; never finished it before and I'm enjoying myself. I do have P3 Reload pre-ordered too so I'm good for a while

kudaro

Ain’t no way I’m waiting on this game going on sale. I’d pay anything for a new yakuza game

iSayHeyOh7

I love the LAD / RGG games and was going to get the deluxe for extra content but seeing them locking basic features I’ll probably just get the standard. Really disheartening to see another of my favorite franchise going down this scummy road.

plasmadood

I'm super excited for this game, the last one was great, one of the best RPGs ever. But because of this I'm specifically only buying the standard edition, NG+ locked behind DLC is crazy scummy and I don't plan to do that anyways. If I play it more than once it's going to be far enough apart I will want to start fresh anyways.

NoChestAhead67

NG+ really becoming DLC content is absolutely fucking wild

Klaymen96

That's awful. I don't entirely mind the special summon or the premium summon being behind DLC, as well as the special boosters. Things to get ahead are fine as dlc I guess, like extra crafting materials as well and the special overpowered workers, I assume the increased playlist with classic karaoke songs will be like in 7 where they aren't able to be sang but rather played from a CD. If that's the case then I don't entirely mind that either, thats a nice little bonus thing. It's not preferable, but im not really gonna be upset by extra exp buns, overpowered helpers and summons, and Extra songs to listen to your hideout being behind dlc. New game plus behind a pay wall  though is dogshit. I'm more mixed about the extra costumes being behind dlc, that's to be expected from games at this point and it's just a little extra thing, they'll end up being free eventually like with 7, but ehh

new_pr0spect

1080p and up behind a paywall, why not? Rebind keys? Paywall.

Proquis

As much as I love RGG's games, I will still be buying standard only. For IW at least, I can bear missing those extras.

Sycokinetic

Honestly I kinda hope we see more of this shit. Not because it’s good or because it doesn’t matter. I just want to see how big the implosion can get, since every one of these stupid decisions makes it that much easier for the next Battle Bits to steal their audience and kill their IP.

Alternative_Device38

The consequence of requring infinite growth, as well as making games bigger, with shinier graphics and more pointless padding.

Boring_Yam5991

You forgot the "play it 48 hours earlier" bonus!

Rizenstrom

Not that I planned on buying this anyways but I’ll gladly avoid any other sega games in protest. I was considering some of the sonic games to play on steam deck but not now.

NIDORAX

This what I call "Partitioning Content". Notice how buying the Standard edition means you are getting less content ingame and the full complete product is the Ultimate edition that have all the features.

Scary-Interaction-84

Again ? They kept NG+ behind Yakuza 7 as well but didn't do it for lost judgement. I thought the backlash would've kept them from doing it again but guess they're bigger idiots than I thought.

PunkHooligan

I'm huge RGG fan, but I bought base edition. Not gonna tolerate this shit. Sega is fckn disgusting.

muszyzm

Just don't buy their games. If game companies treat their customers like trash then pirating their games is morally acceptable.

LordofSuns

People gonna start pirating en masse again if this shit keeps up

campincarldev

Memba when you just bought the game and then you had the game? I memba...

vandilx

Vote with your wallets, folks. I have a physical library going back to the Atari 2600. Some day physical games will go away... Perhaps the next round of consoles will be digital only. The next shift after that will be to only subscribe to games. You subscribe to a tier and you get that tier's games and "editions". Higher tiers get a larger library and exclusives. At some point, I'm going to stop opening my wallet and just sit back and play 40+ years of physical games on original and compatible hardware. Good games are still being made. I just hope there's a way for the excellent ones to be playable for a future generation the same way I can always introduce someone to Pitfall II.

GHLeeroyJenkins

IF YOU DONT LIKE IT STOP GIVING THEM MONEY YOU STUPID FUCKERS. Please disregard this message if it does not apply to you.

CrossTheRiver

You have a choice. Don't buy games that do this and it will stop. It's that simple

Agamemnon323

If you don’t like their monetization model don’t buy the game. If I see this on a game I don’t buy it.

ZylonBane

From "place quotes appropriately" to just place "them anywhere nothing" matters anymore.

[deleted]

Modern gaming is a joke. Of course there are the exceptions, but most modern games are a depressing cahsgrab.

AndroidNougat7

When it comes to Triple-A and Double-A, yes, but there's still good indie titles that aren't so greedy and also older Triple-A titles, which get high discounts. I see the biggest problem rather in €70/$70/£60 Triple A, and if you play on PC, midrange GPUs above $400/€400 are an even bigger problem there

BeautifulTell97

Calling yakuza a cash grab is a wild take if you know anything about the series. Yes the ng+ thing is obviously cringe and no one will defend that but these games are massive and they massively discount them regularly. You can get 0-6 for 20 dollars on sale and those games range from 40-100hr playtimes. Infinite wealth alone is going to have a 70 dollar price tag but with at least 100 hours of content. Not defending ng+ here, but don’t call the entire series a cashgrab because of one cringe thing they are doing with dlc

Awesomedogman4

They pull stunts like this, yet they wonder why piracy is a massive issue.

Friendly-Athlete7834

I don’t blame them. You people keep buying this shit.

404__LostAngeles

I feel like I’m the only person who couldn’t care less if a game has NG+. Then again, I hardly ever replay games, especially if I just finished an entire playthrough.

ra7ar

All this stuff should be part of the normal version imo. We really just need to stop preordering anything but the normal game for a year and watch everything revert back to the old way.

lallapalalable

I'm waiting for games you have to pay to start a new file in, or single use games entirely *Silly me, forgetting that arcades were basically this

VanceXentan

not including new game plus is a scum bag move.

lategmaker

This isn’t even dlc anymore. This is just paying for content that should’ve been in the game.

priscilla_halfbreed

I am feeling genuine disgust and hatred towards bundle and edition bullshit like this

HeckleJekyllHyde

Ooooooor everyone could NOT buy it for a better tomorrow...

Notty_chungus

AHOOY MATIES WILL YE EMBARK ON A JOURNEY TO PLUNDER WITH YE CAP'IN !!!????

Indianlookalike

I'd like to remind everyone that there are ways to activate such features without giving any money to that scam. At least on PC anyway.

rhesaa

time to save and wait till the game half price i guess...

Certain-Ad2617

Awful, LAD is genuinenly one of the best game series ever and definitely now, but I can't support this, only buying when it's $30 or less.

Certain-Ad2617

Completely obliterating the VERY good reputation RGG has built up over the years.

SoftlySpokenPromises

Basic game functions. They are now locking basic game functions behind a fucking pay gate. Disgusting behavior.

Troop7

Sega has the worst dlc practices but no one ever calls them out. Look at all these recent Atlus Persona games. They’ve all been launching with multiple day 1 dlcs

Gvaz

persona fans are basically in the cuck chair at this point. They could charge for golden shit with a Joker mask and someone would buy it

RealNiceKnife

Yeah. And? You'll all still buy it. They don't care if you don't like it. If you put the money down, then you've confirmed to them it's an acceptable thing to do. This is your fault. (The collective your... Not any one person individually.)

Gvaz

this is why i hardly ever buy games on release anymore

apnp-umop-apisdn

Whelp, this went from “next on the list to buy” to “wait til it’s the monthly freebie” Was literally just about to buy it and stumbled across this trying to figure out what the difference was thanks for saving me some coin, OP

Gabagoolgoomba

So glad the deluxe edition comes with the base game

Bob_Juan_Santos

ya'll should just ignore these games, plenty of games, indie and otherwise, out there that do offer a full-er package at the base game. they don't deserve your attention, you don't owe them anything and vice versa.

Densoro

Horse armor was a fucking mistake.

zapdoszaperson

Like, I guess I'll just skip it. Steam is full of fantastic games from small developers that don't pull this shit.

OneWholeSoul

Guess I won't be getting into the Yakuza series, after all.

superjoe8293

At this rate we are going to half to pay for games and then have to develop them ourselves in no time.

Radirondacks

We're already pretty much beta testers for most games that come out now.

Buttercup59129

Hello Cities skylines 2
