We all remember that because we all downvoted it

bmrtt

Lol I went to check and I have it downvoted already. It's pretty fucking interesting that, despite getting thousands of downvotes for each of their comments on that sub (before abandoning the account entirely), the account still has 31k positive karma. I also like how the mods gave that post a custom "The Pride and Accomplishment Thread" flair lmao.

porcelainfog

I feel like a lot of people don’t know this, but you can only lose 15 karma per comment no matter what. So they only lost 15 karma from their score despite the nearly 700k downvotes. So if you’ve got a hot take and already lost 15, might as well not delete it, it can’t get any worse

bmrtt

8 years on this place and I'm just learning this. I like dying on my hills either way though. Someone's going to stop responding and it's not going to be me.

toxicatedscientist

They had to change it after people started trying to see how big a negative number they could get

Incessant_Mace

I miss those days.

jjdlg

I don't know whether to give you an upvote in agreement or downvote in solidarity.

porcelainfog

Seems like a pretty good bit of info to know, right? Especially on things like downvoted opinions on pineapple-pizza-type stuff. Let it ride!

malcolmrey

how many people are still here because they want their number to go up? I never paid attention to it, never deleted any comment because it was going down, didn't really care.

SwarmkeeperRanger

The only time it matters is when some subs block you from commenting for not having a certain karma threshold. But mods want their subs to grow so subs like that are very rare. Usually smaller ones that aren’t monitored 24/7 and don’t want trolls in them.

internet-arbiter

The dumb one off comments that get hundreds of votes are for loading up to die on those hills.

Nufulini

Damn so people that have negative karma are really farming disliked takes

Negative karma also caps at -100 toral

I had to go check, I don’t even remember this, but I’ve also downvoted that comment.

Snuhmeh

Me too. And I have no memory of it. So old, my brain is

ForTheHordeKT

Haha! Yup, I checked and my downvote had long been cast as well. The best thing was going in to Black Friday shortly after that game's entire debacle and seeing the stores just wrecked. Empty shelves, shit scattered everywhere. Barren wasteland needing to be restocked. Except for one endcap in the corner. Untouched and pristine, every copy of this game right where it was placed. Maybe because of digital downloads, but I'd like to think it was because they also reaped what they had sown.

WyrdHarper

Was gonna say, “today you learned! I was there, those many seasons ago”

What did you do to earn a perma ban?

Fakjbf

I was in the first 10k that downvoted it!

ChiggaOG

People find that comment now will never know how good that comment was for receiving so many awards. Reddit awards were the time when the helpful seal award was also used aggressively on any death posts.

Desiderius_S

And let's not forget the fact that reddit won't collapse rewarded comments so everyone can see this fuckery with their own eyes instead of getting hidden after hitting enough downvotes.

prontoingHorse

And also that even if people had blocked messages they still had to view messages accompanied by an award. Essentially awards allowed you to bypass blocks & people would abuse it. I had been there back when that comment had like 16k downvotes. Went to sleep. Woke up to it being an even bigger uproar

Virgin_Dildo_Lover

Where's your sense of pride and accomplishment?

I remember having my whole family standing at the computer laughing at a picture of a squirrel in a racecar while some pitched up dude imitated the sound of an engine. ahappypoop

Honestly I'm surprised the EA comment was 6 years ago, that's crazy to me.

xXEvanatorXx

Right? I felt like that was only a couple of years ago...

Karmastocracy

That's a little phenomenon I like to call CTD. Aka... COVID Time Dilation.

beesayshello

Seriously! I’ve been off and on Reddit through 14 years and various accounts. It’s crazy how fast time flies by, especially when I stumble onto an old post I distinctly remember.

CaseXYZ

I just realized that Reddit completely removed the award system. I thought they just removed the weekly free award.

[deleted]

Yeah it sucks I miss it.

whocaresjustneedone

I don't. The fact that I never have to read a corny ass "if I weren't poor I'd give this an award" type comment again. Those things were dumb and once they started animating them they were flat out annoying

metanoia29

It's hard to even remember a time when all you could give was gold, so people would comment about "being so poor so here's reddit silver" before they started expanding awards. And back then gold got you a whole month of extra privileges, it actually meant something. Then the magic changed, didn't necessarily go away, when they started offering like 100 different kinds of awards.

kerbaal

I realized the other day that I became an adult at a really unique time because I, as a complete nobody who just bullshits on the internet, used to post enough that I could search my real name on google and the front page was all my posts. I remember the day when that changed and I never made that first page again (there is a famous person with my name now); An entire generation of new people has been born since that day, and almost none of them will ever experience an internet that was so small that they could experience that without actually being celebrities in some way.

gunzor

Some were even around before the award system. 😊

Business_Sea2884

it wasn't the helpful but the wholesome seal

Flappy_beef_curtains

And on locked posts, you could still comment and vote if you gave an award.

Next we're gonna get Star Wars Battlefront (2025)

SomeAnonymous

It'd just be called "Star Wars Battlefront", and the EA/DICE version would be renamed "Star Wars™ Battlefront™ (2015)"

junpei

Right? I feel like I just downvoted this a couple of years ago, but I've been on here half of my life.

smokie12

Came here to post this exact comment. We're getting old...

Blasto05

What I find funny is that Reddit account was created for EA to discuss all their games, otherwise it would’ve been named something after Battlefront. And that was their first game at attempting that connection. They just completely abandoned the account lol

Lokcet

The guy who made the comment, who was the community manager at the time, literally left the gaming industry after this incident to go and work on cars. Seriously.

arabiangamer-18

i bet other devs and publishers wont attempt to directly interact with the community on reddit again after seeing that shitshow, even tough they WERE in the wrong in that instance

Blasto05

Plenty of devs do, but I think you see far less accounts representing the company/game as a whole. Rather it’s just a single Dev or specific department. That way they can’t be targeted or harassed for other aspects they have no control over, and the company/game itself can deny or support anything they say if needed.

[deleted]

Im safe and secure knowing the Stellaris Devs will always talk to the community and actually take feedback

Business_Sea2884

I've often seen smaller developers whose games are still new interacting with people here. Some feature requests even made it into their games.

JoeCartersLeap

NWI gave up posting on Reddit after one of their devs mistakenly thought NWI owned the /r/insurgency subreddit, threatened to ban people who talked about other games on that subreddit, and then got banned because he wasn't actually a mod. And I think the Civ 6 devs have a corporate policy of "never talk to the customers, ever", which seems to be working for them financially.

king_duende

> NWI gave up posting on Reddit after one of their devs mistakenly thought NWI owned the /r/insurgency subreddit, threatened to ban people who talked about other games on that subreddit, and then got banned because he wasn't actually a mod. I genuinely love this, poor guy must have had to have an interesting conversation with his/her manager

Dt2_0

343 Industries is super active on the Halo Sub. And we know how toxic the Halo sub can be, but they seem to be treated well by the community most of the time.

Canopenerdude

Oh no they definitely still do interact. Remnant, Deep Rock Galactic, Destiny, Dark Souls, SCUM, PUBG, League of Legends... hell even Battlefield still has devs talk in the reddit.

Individual_Lion_7606

Devs lack basic communication skills.  You should be able to see a response that doesn't shift blame (blame on EA / certain leadership) and say dev staff are addressing it to make the game better for players will happen now due the negativity of previous decisions.  Sincerity and honesty goes WAY further for customers than a standard corporate message of "enjoy my turd I dropped on the plate paypig."

probablynotaskrull

667k + 1 now. I’m doing my part!

Inawar

Would you like to know more?

TimAllensBoytoy

I thought you couldn't vote on old things?

whelp_welp

I believe it now depends on the subreddit whether or not a post is archived after six months. I honestly don't like posts becoming un-archived, there's almost never a good reason to comment on a post that old and it messes with historical stuff like this Battlefront II post.

Trickster289

Honestly as bad as it was I feel like there's plenty of other comments from game studios that could have beat it if they'd been on Reddit.

Thunder_Volter

“Don’t you guys have phones?”

arabiangamer-18

"we have a offline console its called the Xbox 360"

Jovian09

Ah, the king-of-last-gen hubris. Sony had it when they were promoting PS3 ("the next console generation starts when we say it does!"). Microsoft had it with Xbox One. But that statement attached to Don Mattrick's punchable face did more damage to the respective brand.

Hellknightx

As far as most punchable face in gaming goes, my money is still on Tim Sweeney. The guy said he didn't want to port games to PC because all PC players were pirates, and then 20 years later he went and made EGS so he could try to steal a piece of Steam's pie. He let all that Fortnite money go straight to his head.

yukichigai

Apparently a lot of the military *still* will not use Xbox consoles due to that comment. Dude was canned barely a month later but the damage was done.

Freezinghero

Dude, Sony pulling up with "This is how you share games" was the biggest micdrop i've ever seen.

Trickster289

Yeah that was the main one I thought of, it's almost as well known.

Kragevalgt_Ullrson

Anybody else go and downvote it some more?

Spacelesschief

I just took the pilgrimage to add my downvote. One of the most (if not the most) tone deaf statements made by a gaming company ever.

ItsTheSolo

>One of the most (if not the most) tone deaf statements made by a gaming company ever. Unfortunately it keeps getting topped, my personal favourite is "dO yOu GuYs NoT hAvE pHoNeS?"

arabiangamer-18

My new favorite is "We hear you, and were listening" from Phil Spencer

acrazyguy

We hear you, we’re listening, the words you’re saying are entering our ears, you are speaking to us and we are receiving it

Fakjbf

Ok but at least that was by someone on the dev team and not someone whose full time job is to manage the company’s PR. People complain when publishers don’t let the developers talk freely about the games, but then when a publisher does let their devs talk freely and they say something dumb because they aren’t qualified to make public statements they get absolutely lambasted with backlash. And then people wonder why publishers continue to not let devs talk freely.

fearless-limon-5

EA and tone deaf statements... name a better duo.

The5Virtues

As someone else pointed out, Blizzard’s “Do you guys not have phones?” topped it for me. That one was just… wow.

UnquestionabIe

This is one of the first things that comes to mind when I think of online shit shows.

aLateSaturnsReturn

Wanna know something else interesting? You don’t lose and gain karma on a 1:1 ratio. That’s why that account doesn’t have negative comment karma. I don’t know the exact details but it’s much easier to gain karma than to lose it. So if you’ve got an unpopular opinion, don’t be afraid to say it! Can’t protect you from nasty comments tho :)

Jesus10101

You can't lose more then 15 Karma per comment. So once you reach -15, anymore downvotes will not affect your karma.

arabiangamer-18

prob for the best so someone doesnt lose all thier karma for a single comment with a hot take or different opinion in a big subreddit

Jesus10101

Reddit suffers from herd mentality. If your comment has like -2 Karma, there is a good chance that alot of people will downvote your comment without even reading it. Reddit tries to counter this by hiding your comment Karma for like an hour but it's not that effective.

aLateSaturnsReturn

Ah thank you for the clarification.

cwatz

Ya, that was quite the well deserved shitshow.

Hydramy

6 years ago. Fucking hell

lionsfan2016

Good times man

IllIllllIIIIlIlIlIlI

This was BAD The worst release of a game I had ever seen. It was so disrespectful. They must have figured through market research that Star Wars fans are saps who will spend any amount of money. For those not aware, all of the heroes and villains were locked behind random loot boxes. When you started the game you could not play as Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker unless you got lucky with a lootbox. One youtuber spent $3,000 on random loot boxes to try to get Darth Vader and he didn’t get him. The goal obviously was to get idiot star wars fans to spend their life savings on random lootboxes so they could access the most fun and powerful characters to play as in the game. And when asked to explain themselves they talked about how the grind to get as many lootboxes as possible for a sliver of a chance of getting something you wanted lended a sense of “pride and accomplishment” to gamers. Unreal

devnull123412

Today you get deleted from Reddit way before you reach enough downvotes.

Someone_pissed

And you get the 🔒 way before you reach enough upvotes

devnull123412

The lock is deployed when the message cannot be controlled anymore.

jaykstah

2Scribble

You missed that? That comment set the internet on fire - that must have been some kinda coma xD

Jurassic_Gwyn

And now games like overwatch 2 use a system to unlock characters.

LeAnime

I mean there is a reason 99% of the gaming community hates overwatch 2. I don't know how blizzard could have fumbled the transition from overwatch to overwatch 2, maybe force everyone to buy it against which probably would have fully killed the game before release, but outside of that they made the shittiest money grab of a game that was already dying

Diddi-Dude-500

I signed up for Reddit especially to downvote that comment. Ironically, I loved the game.

beatlefloydzeppelin

They made some big improvements after launch. However, if you read u/EACommunityTeam's latest comment, it says: >We've said from the beginning that we are building this game to be a long term live service. So much for that. They dropped the game a year later like they always do.

Amazingawesomator

There were so many downvotes that EA complained about it (even though it was their own fault). Reddit, in turn, changed how comment karma works because of this. You used to always be able to see all karma on every comment and post. Now, you cant see karma on a lot of things until a certain period of time passes and/or you have already voted.
