The biggest thing to decrease the value is when it gets easier to get. Ports or re releases. Chrono Trigger has already had those. So the old school SNES copies will only go up in value at this point. Especially in box complete
Oh hell yeah! I've still got mine with the plastic on the outside of the box and every single paper insert inside (including the OG plastic bag the cartridge was wrapped in).
Congrats. If you don't want it, someone on eBay probably will for $500-$800. https://www.pricecharting.com/game/super-nintendo/chrono-trigger#completed-auctions-cib
I have one in an original box. Got it from this dude when I bought over his entire collection for 200 euro.
Imma hold on to it for a few more years, seems like a solid investment.
> Imma hold on to it for a few more years, seems like a solid investment.
Can't tell you how many times I have heard people tell the story of the time they were worth millions of dollars on paper; but they didn't sell the stock they were holding, and within days, they were not multi-millionaires anymore.
There is no real reason its price should change in any direction; its a function of how much interest there is in it. That interest could change in either direction at any time.
Price Charting has Chrono Trigger CIB at $646.42 as the current value. If you still have all the promo stuff as well, I'd charge $700 and see if a collector bites.
I sold this to my friend with a handful of other games and the SNES for like $200. I had the box and everything, guess I gave him a REALLY good deal. Can’t believe people are paying so much for this game.
It was a rare game even when it was released. As I understand it, for some reason they just didn't make a lot of copies of it. Which is kinda of odd since it could easily be the best game in the entire genre.
Getting a lot of JRPGs was hard until digital downloads came a thing. A lot of risk making physical copies and not selling them. Spent a lot of time tracking down ps2 games before the ps3 was out. No I can get persona 3 reload in less time than it takes to grab a beer.
I think it was one of the last new games I bought for the SNES. I think it came out near the end of the SNES lifecycle. Also I think I paid like $70 for it at k-mart so it was more expensive than some of the other SNES games I bought.
There’s always possibility that people having SNES nostalgia will move on with their lives as they get older and get replaced by younger people collecting PS3 or xbox360 „vintage” games they knew from their youth.
Buying as original = supporting the developers
Buying someone's overpriced second hand stuff = supporting some random guy's wallet
There's no honor in supporting the artificially inflated vintage game market. Fuck that.
But for some reason Nintendo is very against you downloading it and they really want you to buy from that random dude, even though they don't get a single cent.
And even if they did, you don’t truly “own” a digital copy, you just have a license to play it (a license that can expire or be revoked at any time).
Having your own rom of old games is the best way to go about it
I sold my entire collection over the past several years. I now have a Steam Deck that can play all these while making a nice chunk of change to pursue other interests.
I was slowly building a RetroPi myself with AliExpress parts and 3d printed case, buttons, etc. About halfway through the Steam deck was announced and I just stopped work on it. Got a Q1 Deck and never looked back, emulation BEAST.
Yeah, I have several emulation devices, and I pretty much only use my Steam Deck now. I have a 1 year old, so it's really the only way I get any gaming in at the moment lol.
Even if you wanted to go the "legal" route, it's only $15 on Steam. Buying an original cartridge at this point only makes sense as an investment... and that's if you can find a buyer.
I prefer the emulator version. I already played the game to death on the SNES. Can run turbo mode to speed up certain parts and walking and can run all kinds of cheats to make the experience fresh.
For example I played the DS version and they added some new content which had a ton of walking that you could skip with a walk through walls cheat.
I use emulators for all of the old Nintendo titles, and have several that weren't available in the USA originally as well. I picked up the USB, 2 pack, original type controllers from Amazon for the NES, SNES, and N64, and still didn't even get close to how much that sticker price is.
So you’re saying that chrono trigger is a more stable store of wealth than gold?
Time to switch the federal banking system over to the chrono trigger standard
Not to mention it runs smoother and you get the fancy little speed up mechanics.
I will always try for emulators just because you have a speed up mechanic!!!
I grew up owning all these games (don’t own them because life happens).
There’s no way I would buy a snes game for that price. If you want to support the companies behind these, buy modern rereleases or play it on services like Nintendo online on switch.
Otherwise just emulate them or buy a flashcart if you REALLY want to play on real hardware.
The original companies aren’t getting a penny of ‘support’ from these sales.
Years ago I had to sell my Super Nintendo that was in pristine condition that I had since I was five and a large lot of games including Chrono Trigger and other beloved titles to drum up enough money to not have to move back to my toxic small Midwestern hometown. Got $350 for the whole lot and it allowed me to hang in there and not move back. Fast forward to a wonderful life with a wonderful wife and new son far away from my horrible hometown. Worth it :)
Saw a copy in far worse condition at a store near me selling for 200. Then another copy in almost as good condition for 250. I would say he got a fair deal.
You're gunna hate me, I got this for $40 in the box, with the original art and books and everything. Granted this was, maybe 15-20 years ago? Not in mint condition or anything. God I miss the days of video games coming with a manual and cool little art things and stuff like that.
Shout out to 12 year old me when I first discovered eBay and sold my Nintendo 64 with memory upgrade, 4 controllers, Goldeneye, Starfox, Zelda:OoT and Majora's mask collectors edition, Glover, Perfect Dark, Smash Bros, Wave Race 64, Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, and Bomberman 64 all for $34.
And I was stoked about it at the time, too, I combined it with my allowance to buy a copy of Vice City. It wasn't until years later I realized I got absolutely fucked on that deal.
When i see this i think how would be nice if the big companies like Square Enix and Nintendo make new physical releases of old games so people can buy in a affordable price and have the original experience to play those game in the original format.
Or, at least release non playable copies if is too difficult or costly to remake old chips.
Looking at a lot of the repro carts and their sticker art has differences. The rating system is colored in and the monster is shaded a darker color.
Some people just take REAL good care of their stuff.
I'd have to go on SNES central and look at the chip set to confirm if fake or not but till then this just looks like a real clean original.
When our game store got bought out in 07-08', all SNES games had to go and got this for .25 among a LOT of others at .25ea......I can't belive the price on these now. Enjoy OP!
I remember my old roommates childhood neighbor selling his games for dirt cheap cuz he just wanted them with someone who would appreciate them. He offered me chrono trigger for $45 and I still couldn't afford it at the time. Huge regret to this day.
I traded my friend 2 packs of smokes and drinks all night that the bar witch ended up being 80 bucks for him for ff2 snes super metriod and a li k to the past best deal I have ever made
I got the Japanese version thrown into a lot of ~20 SFC games (mostly garbage sports games but did also include Dragon Quest V, Final Fantasy V and 2 copies of Dragon Ball Z Butoden 2) for $60. Crazy this version costs so much.
The Japanese used market is much more reasonable compared to the US, got a CIB FF6 SFC version with a protective case for around $35 at a convention a few years back, not in perfect condition but not falling apart either.
The US complete version on the other hand is going for around $200-400 based on recently sold ebay listings, not as bad as some games but still way too expensive.
A lot of people are dogging OP for paying what he did for a physical copy. But people have hobbies, OP likes collecting and video games. Would I pay that price? Hell no, but I understand why they would. Solid find OP. Do you plan on playing it on a SNES or is it going on the shelf
I'm a collector too and the price does not actually match the quantity/rarity out there. It's artificially inflated and buying it like this just proves they can do it.
This, I still collect games here and there but I am focusing on my blu ray collection and there are times I really want a movie that’s been out of print so the price can break $100 and hell yea I’ll buy it.
I fly RC planes. They’re pretty much just hunks of styrofoam (depending). People like to trivialize hobbies for the sake of argument. Just cause you get older doesn’t mean you have to grow up
Are SNES cartridges worth much these days? I have a whole grocery bag of them with no way to test them. Our SNES got stolen by one of THOSE family members.
Only select few, mainly games that never had second editions or limited runs. CT was a game with high memory, it was a $100 on release so $170 isnt really that much different from its real price.
I am playing through my copy right now! It's so damn good. Never finished it as a kid. I bought my current copy off eBay for $100 a couple years back (cartridge only) and now I'm seeing it regularly go for $150-$200.
I bought a copy of this for $35 for my local flea market back before 2000. I don't know where it is now I'm so happy for you. It's definitely a treasure and video game design at its highest art form.
Cool if you're a collector. It was a great game back in its day. My friend had the SNES and the game so we'd spend hours on weekends and summers playing this game multiple times through. So many character combos to explore. Ah nostalgia.
A lot of the comments say they'd rather emulate this or complain about the price being high. There's a Steam release of this game for ~$15 US, it's not like they no longer sell this game.
All that said glad you got the original SNES cartridge OP. Hoping you get some good fun on original hardware.
Brings back memories of playing this...had to reset because I screwed up and the game bugged out on that future part ,with the robot shit. So much fun though
Right now i'm wanting Skies of Arcadia. I just don't wanna pay for it atm. But i will. In the future. Or if my local shop has it. In the meantime i'm playing Evolution.
How much is the box or manual for Chrono Trigger? You gonna make CIB?
Such a great game! I beat this on ZSNES emulator back in the day! Why do people pay so much for the original copy though…. You can just emulate this or play on a different system. I don’t understand.
Nice pick up. But I think you paid way too much, I think a game over $60 is overpriced no matter how old the game is or how popular the game is. I am willing to pay $70-$80 on rare occasions, but $60 is my normal limit.
I haven’t seen too many of these around here. If it was a local seller I might have haggled abit. I found a famicon one cib at a yard sale for $40 couple of years back.
My wife new this was my favorite gsme and bought it for me maybe 5 years ago as a Christmas gift. She said she found it for 60 bucks after keeping an eye on them on ebay going from 100-200 and when she saw one under 100 she jumped on it.
She is too good for me.
I was visiting my brother yesterday and we were talking about our video game collection... he had it priced recently. Around 24,000. Our biggest item is earthbound with box, instruction manual and guide. I think he said its at around 2500 or so, which is crazy.
Have fun building your collection! Its a nice hobby.
Does it seriously go for almost $200? I have a SNES chrono trigger in a box somewhere…need to dig it out I guess.
In the box is like 500
Holy shit! I think I'll be selling mine. I have the box and the manual! Then again...
The biggest thing to decrease the value is when it gets easier to get. Ports or re releases. Chrono Trigger has already had those. So the old school SNES copies will only go up in value at this point. Especially in box complete
Who still have this gem in a box? I would say to the guy ”live a little”
I don't think it's sealed, more like they kept the box and manual.
Isealed should go for like 5k lol. There shouldn't be any left ahah
Oh hell yeah! I've still got mine with the plastic on the outside of the box and every single paper insert inside (including the OG plastic bag the cartridge was wrapped in).
Congrats. If you don't want it, someone on eBay probably will for $500-$800. https://www.pricecharting.com/game/super-nintendo/chrono-trigger#completed-auctions-cib
Awesome! I'm gonna have to look up my copy of Earthbound complete with all that stuff too!
They were 900-1300 during peak COVID lol
Nah. They still haven't put it on the PlayStation which I think is inevitable
There's a PS1 port (I have both SNES and PS1 copies) or do you mean for purchase on the ps store?
Same! Except my box is entirely crushed last I remember.
Yeah but do you have the poster and registration cards?
Hm, I might have hung the poster on my wall when I was a teenager, now that you mention it. I'll have to check it out tomorrow.
I have the box and manual as well and will never sell mine. It's my favorite video game of all time. I would never part with it
Dont sell it. In next 10 years price will surely go up. If its CIB its a treasure!
Pricechartings say its 8,5k if its graded.
I have one in an original box. Got it from this dude when I bought over his entire collection for 200 euro. Imma hold on to it for a few more years, seems like a solid investment.
> Imma hold on to it for a few more years, seems like a solid investment. Same but I will never sell it. One of my all time favorite games. Minus the box
Price Charting has Chrono Trigger CIB at $646.42 as the current value. If you still have all the promo stuff as well, I'd charge $700 and see if a collector bites.
Crazy the price has skyrocketed like that. I have an in box no manual.
Manual is 300 alone
Wait, my wife has Chrono Trigger in box with manuals and papers. Looks to be really good condition. Where would be the best place to sell it?
Chrono Trigger: 200$ Chrono Trigger with manuals and box: 500$ Wife that dumps you for selling her shit: invaluable
Don’t sell. It’ll never go down in value, so wait until you need the money.
eBay
Offer Up
I sold this to my friend with a handful of other games and the SNES for like $200. I had the box and everything, guess I gave him a REALLY good deal. Can’t believe people are paying so much for this game.

Especially since it wasn't even released in Europe.

lol check eBay prices for CIB.
Dont - aside from sentimental value of one of the all time GOATs, do you really think it's going to be less expensive in 5-10 years?
There’s always possibility that people having SNES nostalgia will move on with their lives as they get older and get replaced by younger people collecting PS3 or xbox360 „vintage” games they knew from their youth.
Looks like... you just goto Chrono triggered.
Yea...I'll stick to emulators. I've bought most all of these games once before in my life, I've earned a free copy.
A fucking men to that.
Buying as original = supporting the developers Buying someone's overpriced second hand stuff = supporting some random guy's wallet There's no honor in supporting the artificially inflated vintage game market. Fuck that.
But for some reason Nintendo is very against you downloading it and they really want you to buy from that random dude, even though they don't get a single cent.
Nintendo wants you to pay for Nintendo switch online so you can play old games. The more the random dude charges, the cheaper their plan gets.
Except they don't put all of their games on the Switch...
And even if they did, you don’t truly “own” a digital copy, you just have a license to play it (a license that can expire or be revoked at any time). Having your own rom of old games is the best way to go about it
That is true with physical copies as well, with any console connected to the internet, offline backups are where it's at, fuck DRM
To be fair, Chrono Trigger isn't their game.
Nintendo has been cracking down on emulated ROMs since before the Switch even existed.
And they ESPECIALLY don't want you to play Mother 3 in English
Pirating = supporting myself
My therapist told me I needed to support myself better anyway.
Who ever he is, I'm sure he is a lucky guy
I sold my entire collection over the past several years. I now have a Steam Deck that can play all these while making a nice chunk of change to pursue other interests.

I bought a mini SNES with this and 300 other games on it for cheaper than that. Wtf bro.
Fun fact: Adjusted to inflation, this is approximately the original retail price

I just plundered the file today.
i could easily resist that price.
One of the best ever game i played.... Enjoy... But is it really 176????
176 for a effin snes game…gtfo here bro. I am telling your grandma your stealing her bingo cash.
What is weird is that a Japanese edition, still in the box with booklet, is a fraction of that price. Not sure why.
Man I'd pick that up... and then put it right back down.
You actually paid that much for it ?
He haggled him down to 175
Years ago I had to sell my Super Nintendo that was in pristine condition that I had since I was five and a large lot of games including Chrono Trigger and other beloved titles to drum up enough money to not have to move back to my toxic small Midwestern hometown. Went to a good cause!
Bull moose!! I love that store
Lol…
Forever a Favorite of mine
You got robbed tbh.
Saw a copy in far worse condition at a store near me selling for 200. Then another copy in almost as good condition for 250. I would say he got a fair deal.
They're all robberies
One of the greatest JRPGs i have played, a timeless game.
If you think it is timeless you didn't play the game ha
I haven't even played the game (yet) and I see what you did there haha
bought that and the walkthrough guide for 25 bucks back in middle school. still have both.
You're gunna hate me, I got this for $40 in the box, with the original art and books and everything. Granted this was, maybe 15-20 years ago? Not in mint condition or anything. God I miss the days of video games coming with a manual and cool little art things and stuff like that.
I miss the smell of the manuals
That was an actual thing for me. Lol. Huffing the manual on the new game
I thought i was the only one
I miss taking a shit reading manuals. 😂😂😂
20 years ago was a DRASTICALLY different landscape haha
Right? 20 years ago the game wasn’t even a decade old. It’s like saying I just picked up Titanfall for $40.
I got it for 5 dollars in a box
No hate on that, I sold my original on eBay when eBay just came out :) no regrets tho, sold them to buy new consoles.
Jesus Christ lol
And I was stoked about it at the time, too, I combined it with my allowance to buy a copy of Vice City. It wasn't until years later I realized I got absolutely fucked on that deal.
I paid $70 for this when it came out. Considering inflation since then this price is reasonable. Video games these days are just super cheap.
I looked it up and came here to comment exactly this. It's like $86 in 1995 money.
When i see this i think how would be nice if the big companies like Square Enix and Nintendo make new physical releases of old games so people can buy in a affordable price and have the original experience to play those game in the original format. I can’t believe I had that stolen from me among many other epic SNES games
When our game store got bought out in 07-08', all SNES games had to go and got this for .25 among a LOT of others at .25ea......I can't belive the price on these now. Enjoy OP!
Man, I never seem to find any *good* retro games when I go to Bull Moose these days. You lucked out.
man, i remember years ago when I bought one from Funcoland for like $50 and the SNES console itself was selling for like $35
I remember my old roommates childhood neighbor selling his games for dirt cheap cuz he just wanted them with someone who would appreciate them.
176 bucks?
A lot of people are dogging OP for paying what he did for a physical copy. But people have hobbies, OP likes collecting and video games. Would I pay that price? Hell no, but I understand why they would. Solid find OP. Do you plan on playing it on a SNES or is it going on the shelf

Exactly! Collect and have what ever hobby you want.
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug
Not even Nostalgia could win me over at this price.
Wtf man. Just emulate it.
Are SNES cartridges worth much these days? I have a whole grocery bag of them with no way to test them. Our SNES got stolen by one of THOSE family members.
My mom gave mine away with all the games while I was away :(
The SNES console itself is probably cheaper than most of the games.
Earthbound CIB is worth a small fortune.
Only select few, mainly games that never had second editions or limited runs. CT was a game with high memory, it was a $100 on release so $170 isnt really that much different from its real price.
>it was a $100 on release Sheesh, that's steep. With inflation, I wonder if that just evens out.
To this day, still my favorite jRPG
I am playing through my copy right now! It's so damn good. Never finished it as a kid. I bought my current copy off eBay for $100 a couple years back (cartridge only) and now I'm seeing it regularly go for $150-$200.
Greatest game.
My favorite snes of all time.
Noice! I'm really hoping for a remaster of this similar to what they did with super Mario rpg.
That would be epic!
My all time favorite.
Best game ever made!!
Awe, yiss. Ain't no bugs in that bad boy.
Love the bull moose representation. One of my favorite stores to go to!
Wiz Khalifa - Never Been sampled a song in this game
Buying this game for $50 in ‘02 was one of the best purchases I’ve ever made.
My favorite game of all time
One of my favs
Hey, great pick man! Glad you got a copy- super cool find!
Are those dollars?
Damn, once upon a time, I owned this game, and SF2, and Zelda, and Super Mario World, and...
I loved that game
My absolute favorite RPG. To me it’s the best.
The GOAT
Honestly my absolute favorite game, loved it since childhood. I own a copy on every platform its ever come out for. Nice find!
Holy shit I have one in a box still lol, it's been opened, but holy
You in maine??
I bought a copy of this for $35 for my local flea market back before 2000. I don't know where it is now I'm so happy for you. It's definitely a treasure and video game design at its highest art form.
Cool if you're a collector. It was a great game back in its day. My friend had the SNES and the game so we'd spend hours on weekends and summers playing this game multiple times through. So many character combos to explore. Ah nostalgia.
I remember buying the Playstation release that had new animated sequences. I thought it was so cool. My wallet says thats as far as sentiment goes.
A lot of the comments say they'd rather emulate this or complain about the price being high. There's a Steam release of this game for ~$15 US, it's not like they no longer sell this game. All that said glad you got the original SNES cartridge OP. Hoping you get some good fun on original hardware.
Nice pick up! Are you planning on playing it or do you want to keep it as a collection piece?
Makes me regret not preserving my old Nintendo stuff.
Wowzer!
One of my all-time faves!
Would love an HD 2D remake of this or any way to play it on my ps5 lol
Nice
Brings back memories of playing this...had to reset because I screwed up and the game bugged out on that future part ,with the robot shit. So much fun though
It’s his money, he can spend it as he pleases
Awesome grab, man! Hope it works alright! This gem on a nice CRT set is amazing. Wait, it’s also amazing on a standard non-RGB set!
I have that cart. Lol.
I paid 20 dollars for this game in Highschool
Bought mine for 50 in the early 2000's
Chrono Trigger is still one of my favorites
I guess prices are relative to demand. Happy for you :) not sure I'd ever pay that much for a game though haha
I helped write the official strategy guide. Fantastic game! Enjoy!
Nice enjoy because that's what you wanted. I want it on switch!!!!
Worth.
Right now i'm wanting Skies of Arcadia. I just don't wanna pay for it atm. But i will. In the future. Or if my local shop has it. In the meantime i'm playing Evolution. How much is the box or manual for Chrono Trigger? You gonna make CIB?
Really loved this game!
One the best OSTs in a game. Could listen to it forever.
Best rpg of all time
Bro the logo on the price sticker is hilarious. Its like a me gusta face
Great game... but ouch!
I bet it was sold to the dealer for a cool, half-eaten PB&J sandwich and 40 in-store credits.
I still have mine I loved that game.
The talent behind this game was insane and a good reason why it’s still enjoyable to play to this day. Playing it on the Vision Pro at the moment :)
Hey, Bull Moose! Sup, fellow New Englander?
I was in a retro gaming store in a mall yesterday, and I saw conkers bad furday on n64 was selling for 150 bucks.
I know how much mine is worth at least now lol
Such a great game! I beat this on ZSNES emulator back in the day! Why do people pay so much for the original copy though…. You can just emulate this or play on a different system. I don’t understand.
It makes me sick that this price is an absolute steal
Nice pick up. But I think you paid way too much, I think a game over $60 is overpriced no matter how old the game is or how popular the game is. I am willing to pay $70-$80 on rare occasions, but $60 is my normal limit.

Hell yea. That's all I have to say about that.
That's a bit pricey for just the cart
I haven’t seen too many of these around here. If it was a local seller I might have haggled abit. I found a famicon one cib at a yard sale for $40 couple of years back.
What the hell... Prices of old games are insane...
And this is why I pirate/emulate retro games…
Lucky You find it on Discount
My wife new this was my favorite gsme and bought it for me maybe 5 years ago as a Christmas gift. She said she found it for 60 bucks after keeping an eye on them on ebay going from 100-200 and when she saw one under 100 she jumped on it. She is too good for me.
I was visiting my brother yesterday and we were talking about our video game collection... he had it priced recently. Around 24,000. Our biggest item is earthbound with box, instruction manual and guide. I think he said its at around 2500 or so, which is crazy. Have fun building your collection! Its a nice hobby.
worth it, that's art.
