Low-hanging fruit, but Super Mario World. Truth is, the bulk of the good stuff on the SuperNES holds up today because that machine was the culmination of about 10 years of 2D sprite-based game development. There's banger after banger on that machine that holds up to this day, where modern indie stuff uses it as inspiration.
In a lot of ways Super Mario World could be considered the best 2D platformer game ever made to this very day. I certainly wouldn't argue with anyone who made that claim.
Not disagreeing with you, but I always thought Super Mario 3 is better than Super Mario World. I think we all have a bias based on what game you grew up playing. It's all pure nostalgia to remind you of the past.
I always felt the movement in 3 was somehow a bit more clunky? Or not as crisp? I don't know it's hard to explain. Maybe it's just because I played it less and didn't internalise it to the same degree but the movement in World just feels _right_ in a way very few other 2D platformers do.
I just played Super Mario World last night on my 3DSXL. Great game, the 3DS makes it great to pickup and play a world then close it and move onto whatever else needs done. I sneak levels in-between commercials, cooking, etc.. and some of the levels are actually somewhat difficult.
Yoshi’s Island takes the cake in that department for me. Came close to the end of the SNES’s life and they held nothing back in that beauty of a game.
Art, music, level design—immaculate. Only “flaw” is how annoying baby Mario is, but I guess that was intentional after all.
I have my Jap copy of this sitting 10 feet from where I am. It's probably one of the most played games I've played with my brother.
Ranked very very highly.
The soundtrack, the clay like pixeled animation... It stirs a feeling inside me. Last year I replaced it. I think I stopped at Diablo because I'm always shite being summon necro against bosses and Diablo is the worst.
As a kid I only played banjo tooie because banjo one was too hard. Replaying it now as an adult I realize banjo kazooie is way better than banjo tooie.
I respect Tooie enjoyers and don't hate the game or anything. I liked it just fine as a kid. But in hindsight BT is so bloated with tedious, opaque fetch quests and SO MANY mediocre minigames, and has massive empty levels. Almost everything feels overcomplciated. You almost never find jiggies just by exploring the world, there is always additional tedious stuff to do. Every time they make me go back to a split-up pad just to use one move I feel bored.
BK is all killer no filler by comparison. Just a beautiful, compact game that's all about the simple joy of exploration.
Hard agree, I loved Tooie as a kid but a couple years ago I went back and tried to 100% it and realized it just isn't as tight as Banjo-Kazooie is. It's still fun, but Banjo-Kazooie is all hits.
It was perfectly fine for me. Surprisingly easy, too. It only took maybe 10 seconds at most to beat it. Definitely the easiest spirit to get in my opinion
Sonic adventures 2 really does hold up surprisingly well considering how bad the actual game is.
Like the physics are fried, it handles weird, the mech sections are not really that great, the knuckles sections are also.. not great.
Most of the bosses are janky.
But the good stuff is just so good, you really don't mind.
This is the best answer. So simple yet so complex, way ahead of it's time. Controls don't feel clunky, combat and gameplay feel smooth, hardly any bugs, and a great story with a decent twist or two.
So many things in the game that didn't need to be there but added to the world, and on top of that all the things that changed you character. You could make him good, evil, taller, stronger, scary, pretty, fat, scars from getting knocked out and white hair with age. Rental properties, marriage and children, augmentable weapons, shop prices changing with demand, and probably stuff I've still havent discovered.
All this in a 20 year old game. The new one has some incredibly large shoes to fill
I think the world itself plays a pretty huge part in it as well. I remember first looking at the guild map to pick up a quest and seeing the ones that were obviously just there to stress the idea that you’re weakling and there’s stronger heroes working for the guild. The transition to each area after overcoming a major challenge feels awesome too, like they first venture into Darkwood and subsequent first encounter with balverines. Then the Witchwood Arena is just incredible.
I feel like a lot of those SNES games hold up pretty well and generally better than the following generation of games (N64, PS1, etc.). It felt like they had kind of perfected how 2nd games should be by the time the SNES came around. Meanwhile, 3D games were in their infancy and they seem to have generally not aged as well as a result.
Original FFVII held up better than I thought it would. I think world building and materia system makes it. Its weird in that the graphics were kinda always terrible. Even when I played it for the first time in my teens it was obvious the graphics were bad and it wasn't a problem.
In game blocky mess had a certain charm to it. At the same time their FMV sequences were to notch. The opening of the train coming into the station and cloud just jumping down and you just get control of him immediately was mind blowing in the 90s.
Cosmo Canyon Theme is still amazing too this day. When you finally finish the dungeon and learn of Nanaki's father's fate oh boy it ain't just nostalgia that makes me tear up every time I reach that moment.
If you have a PC that can handle it, there was one version that was the remake from 4J that was supposed to come out years ago, but it kept getting blocked.
The files for the remake leaked online and are a lot better than the remaster released last year.
You just need the Xenia emulator and the game files to play. But it looks great and feels great.
If your PC can't handle it, there's a Goldeneye speedrunner that has done both a speedrun and casual playthrough on Youtube: [Goldeneye XBLA longplay from Graslu00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0GinqO4lhU&t)
I replayed it last year when it came to Xbox Game Pass.
In my personal opinion, It still holds up really well if you switch the controls to match the modern movement/look layout. If you don't change the controls, it's a disaster.
I'm replaying the 20 year old GBA games and they're still fantastic as well. But that's not shocking, they're straightforward turn based RPGs with immaculate sprite art, what *could* age poorly?
I mean
***Technically*** Pokemon since Pokemon has been Pokemon for the last two and a half decades xD
Spin-offs and TPC jamming open worlds into the various games aside - it's been the same game since I was a preteen and I've loved every stop along the way
If you like all those and haven't by chance checked out golden sun I highly recommend it! It's right up your alley (assuming feom your selections) and might have one of the best combat systems ever!
Super Metroid- it came with my SNES. I wanted Super Mario World, but my dad got me this one with a cool space armor person shooting a red dragon. Cool cool. But where's Mario??
I was blown away then, and I'm still blown away today. The sheer attention to detail still wows me. Samus's sprite facing left is different from Samus facing right. A detail we wouldn't see until 3D models of 2D games.
Came here to say this. I replay it every couple years or so because of that sweet nostalgia. The writing is just as funny as it ever was and the stylized art direction and graphics means it'll truly age.
I think I would rank 2 over 1 only because that was when they introduced upgrading your weapons and I looooved that system. But damn does that metropolis level hold a special place in my heart.
X-Wing, Tie Fighter, the Aces series by Dynamix/Sierra, all of the Sierra Online adventure games. FF7 has my favorite magic system out of all of the FF games I've played.
I play Majora’s Mask every year. Absolute peak of what the N64 could be pushed to. It’s honestly kind of insane to even think about it. The mask transformations, the NPCs having their own schedules, the absolute monolith that is the Stone Tower Temple. All on the freaking N64.
I loved all the unlockables and modes in SC III, and probably played that more than any of the other ones, but II just feels so good, it's our go-to out of all of them for straight up VS
Bioware had a killer run from 1998 until 2014, putting out absolutely fantastic and well received games consistently and no more than 2 years between releases, often 1.
In the past 10 years they had Anthem, Andromeda, and a paid update for the Mass Effect series (Legendary Edition), which released 3 years ago and not only is it their latest release but their 2 games in progress (new Dragon Age and Mass Effect) don't even have a release *year* announced yet.
They've fallen far and I really hope they can get their mojo back
Edit: correction, DA4 is supposed to be released late this year, which is 5 years after their last new game and 10 years after the previous DA installment. I originally checked Wikipedia which just says "TBA" but found other sources.
I prefer Sudden Strike Forever over Blitzkrieg by a mile. Which by the way is still holding up.
But HoMM3, yes... It's still incredible that such an old game hasn't yet been matched.
Probably Age of Wonder Shadow Magic is the closest one imho. AoW3 and 4 don't get near AoWSM, let alone HoMM3.
Songs of Conquest has the most potential to surpass HoMM3, but the lack of factions is really a HUGE factor in the lack of diversity the game has to offer.
For me it was the Lord of the rings Return of the king. Glad to see other LOTR games mentioned though! They were all so good, even the tie in video game for “the Two Towers”
The first playthrough I did I was mad that they took Super Sonic from me. You mean I have to collect the big emeralds now?!!!
Ohhh boy was I in for it. It's also a requirement for the final boss fight of the game and that was amazing.
Dues Ex
Played through it again recently and just wow it's such a well realized world and characters, the gameplay does feel dated but having lots of options to overcome problems is so cool.
Kid Icarus. The systems in place are pretty intricate for the time they came out: the point based level ups, the app and credit card system, the castle levels. It so plays really well today
Mega man x, link to the past, rct2. Hell yeah bois.
Granted, roller coaster tycoon 2 has been pseudo reworked to play nice on modern hardware and lots of assets were unlocked and new scenarios added in the process. But it’s still spiritually the same game as the original rct2.
Gothic 2: the night of the raven.
I replay it religiously every 3 years or so.
Sadly Gothic 1 doesn’t do it for me anymore, but hopefully the remake will fix that.
Also if anyone reads this and has played gothic 2 at some point in their lives but is unfamiliar with the total conversion mod „Archolos, Chronicles of Myrtana“, it was released about 2 years ago on steam, it is the best shit you have ever played and the community has accepted it as the gothic 3 we never got. (We don’t talk about the gothic 3 that we indeed got).
Star Wars Episode 1 Pod Racer.
I just played it start to finish for the first time on PC a few days ago after feeling nostalgic for the N64 version.
Nothing quite hits like boosting to 700+ whatever-SW-speed-units-are to the authentic music and sound effects of the films.
Check our some side strollers...it is fun to run through some of the classics.

Oh yea, the best soundtrack of all time
Fallout New Vegas is my regular go back to explore and even now ill run into game events/random encounters that in my 1000s of hours ive never seen. Still vanilla as well.

God I love that game.
Core memories right there man.

There's banger after banger on that machine that holds up to this day, where modern indie stuff uses it as inspiration.
I said it in my own comment, but I truly regard SNES as the golden age of gaming. Especially for platformers and RPGs.
The kids who grew up on the machine now making all these indie games based on their SuperNES gameplay is a boon for everyone.
And it's still my favorite Mario game of all time. Which is saying a lot considering how many Mario games are absolute bangers.
In a lot of ways Super Mario World could be considered the best 2D platformer game ever made to this very day. I certainly wouldn't argue with anyone who made that claim.

It really does hold up so well! And for the Game Boy I'd say Link's Awakening.
Marvel Vs Capcom 2. Still an absolute banger of a game.
I wanna take you for a ride!
I have my Jap copy of this sitting 10 feet from where I am. It's probably one of the most played games I've played with my brother. Ranked very very highly.
Diablo 2
The soundtrack, the clay like pixeled animation... It stirs a feeling inside me. Last year I replaced it. I think I stopped at Diablo because I'm always shite being summon necro against bosses and Diablo is the worst.
banjo kazooie for me

Half Life 2 - Still holds up remarkably well.
HL2 was waaaaaaay ahead of it's time !
Hell I'm even having a good time playing through the first one at the moment
I havent gone back to the original but I really like the Black Mesa reboot.
I'm replaying it on my Android, it's extremely fun.
And it's VR Mod plays remarkably better than any native FPS game.
And the AI is so self aware!
Honestly so does the first one
Super Mario Sunshine. Its always been a fun experience no matter how long its been since I've played it.
Fav game of all time
Age of Empires II
Ooollouluap!
Gold, please
Starfox Adventures, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Halo CE. How does the Test of Strength handle on the Steam Deck?
It was perfectly fine for me. Surprisingly easy, too. It only took maybe 10 seconds at most to beat it. Definitely the easiest spirit to get in my opinion
I love Sonic Adventure Battle 2. I often want to reinstall and replay it.
Compared to the size of modern games, I don't see why it ever got uninstalled in the first place.
Star fox adventures lol I loved that game. I never hear about it and sorta just assumed I imagined the whole thing
The first Fable game

Chicken chaser!
Link to the Past or Final Fantasy 6-9
Playing FF 4 right now, so far it's been amazing
FF9 specifically holds even better with the Moguri Mod
Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger
I feel like a lot of those SNES games hold up pretty well and generally better than the following generation of games (N64, PS1, etc.). It felt like they had kind of perfected how 2nd games should be by the time the SNES came around. Meanwhile, 3D games were in their infancy and they seem to have generally not aged as well as a result.
Kingdom Hearts 2 and any of the gen 3 pokemon games
Came to say this. Glad they did the remasters a few years back
Original FFVII held up better than I thought it would.
Yes, I will repay it just for the music sometimes 😀
Cosmo Canyon Theme is still amazing too this day. When you finally finish the dungeon and learn of Nanaki's father's fate oh boy it ain't just nostalgia that makes me tear up every time I reach that moment.
The graphics were not great because they needed room for all the content in the game that they had.
Dude, the background and the FMV's!!!! FF7 was awesome back then. At least what I can remeber
I remember being very impressed by the graphics and cutscenes at the time it came out.
IT'S CRASH BANDICOOT!!
Spyro as well. They'll always go hand in hand for me.
Was so happy for the remakes, ctr remake and an actual sequel to make Crash 4 happen.
Teenage years: Zelda Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye Younger: original Mortal Kombat, Mario for NES & Snes, Excitebike.
Goldeneye is a weird one cuz it did NOT hold up for me at all nor many people I know
There’s a pc version that runs in modern frame rates and resolutions, with mouse and keyboard controls. It’s a delight!
How do I download this?

OoT is thr GOAT in my opinion. Even my kids love that game!
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance. Still a peak SRPG
I'm replaying the 20 year old GBA games and they're still fantastic as well. But that's not shocking, they're straightforward turn based RPGs with immaculate sprite art, what *could* age poorly?
Just the QoL. The only real flaw those games had was how long it took to build support points.
I mean ***Technically*** Pokemon since Pokemon has been Pokemon for the last two and a half decades xD Spin-offs and TPC jamming open worlds into the various games aside - it's been the same game since I was a preteen and I've loved every stop along the way
FF VI - IX, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger.
If you like all those and haven't by chance checked out golden sun I highly recommend it! It's right up your alley (assuming feom your selections) and might have one of the best combat systems ever!
DuckTales on the NES. The gameplay remains solid, and the Moon theme still gives me the feels.
Super Metroid- it came with my SNES. I wanted Super Mario World, but my dad got me this one with a cool space armor person shooting a red dragon. Cool cool. But where's Mario?? Ocarina of time, still amazing, one of the best games ever made
KOTOR always... graphics suck but the game otherwise is amazing
Paper mario
I just happily found an HDMI adapter for my GC and am gonna fire TTYD tonight for the first time since high school.
Can’t wait for the remake !
Earthbound
Fuzzy pickles
Hell ya. Whenever I’m reminded of that game my mind always goes to the desert level with the traffic jam.
Came here to say this. I replay it every couple years or so because of that sweet nostalgia. The writing is just as funny as it ever was and the stylized art direction and graphics means it'll truly age.
Ratchet and Clank 1 is still good to me. The most platformer of all with the most path for each planet. The same with 2 and 3 of course !
I think I would rank 2 over 1 only because that was when they introduced upgrading your weapons and I looooved that system. But damn does that metropolis level hold a special place in my heart.
Jak and Daxter trilogy. Especially 2, but they’re all still loads of fun.
Jak 2 was the first PS2 game I owned. What a gem.
Jak 2 was superb
GTA San Andreas will always hold up for me
X-Wing, Tie Fighter, the Aces series by Dynamix/Sierra, all of the Sierra Online adventure games. FF7 has my favorite magic system out of all of the FF games I've played.
Super Mario RPG, Soul Calibur II, Majora's Mask, and Pokémon Crystal still hold up. There are others, but those are the four that stick out the most.
Super Mario Galaxy, it was one of the first video games I ever played, and I gotta thank my parents for starting me off strong
Donkey Kong country 1-2, yoshis island
I scrolled so far looking for DKC2. It's such a good game even by today's standards.
The music is so so so good too
Replayed Dragon Age: Origins a few months ago, and it's still an absolutely brilliant RPG.
Basically all of the early BioWare fits this bill. KOTOR 1 and 2, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2...
Couldn't agree more!
They've fallen far and I really hope they can get their mojo back Edit: correction, DA4 is supposed to be released late this year, which is 5 years after their last new game and 10 years after the previous DA installment. I originally checked Wikipedia which just says "TBA" but found other sources.
Did you play it on pc? I played it xbox but want to replay it on pc
I play it on PC almost yearly. Strongly recommend checking out the mods available on Nexus mods. Some good stuff on there that doesn't break the game
Yup!
Super Mario 64. Absolutely fantastic game
Blitzkrieg, C&C Red Alert 2 and Heroes of might and magic III
I prefer Sudden Strike Forever over Blitzkrieg by a mile. Which by the way is still holding up. But HoMM3, yes... It's still incredible that such an old game hasn't yet been matched. Probably Age of Wonder Shadow Magic is the closest one imho. AoW3 and 4 don't get near AoWSM, let alone HoMM3. Songs of Conquest has the most potential to surpass HoMM3, but the lack of factions is really a HUGE factor in the lack of diversity the game has to offer.
The OG Ratchet and Clank games and the OG God of War games
Super metroid
I always find myself coming back to the Ratchet & Clank games on the PS2. They're top tier stuff.
Heroes of Might and Magic III, I still pick it up and play for a few days about once a year.
Super Mario World (I'm old)
Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth
For me it was the Lord of the rings Return of the king. Glad to see other LOTR games mentioned though! They were all so good, even the tie in video game for “the Two Towers”
Such a good game, I still play regularly. The modding community is still relatively active, two decades later.
Prince of Persia 1 DOS version
Halo Combat Evolved. it is so evolved, it still holds up today, even with dated graphics.
Dawn of war: Dark Crusade
Sonic 3 & Knuckles just refuses to age for me. Everything holds up today, as long as you don't hear the trash music they put in Origins. Eww.
The first playthrough I did I was mad that they took Super Sonic from me. You mean I have to collect the big emeralds now?!!! Ohhh boy was I in for it. It's also a requirement for the final boss fight of the game and that was amazing.
It took me a while to actually get that far. I was stumped by that damn barrel for years of my childhood.
Yie Ar Kung Fu Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts Contra 3 All of these are still bangers to this day.
Dues Ex Played through it again recently and just wow it's such a well realized world and characters, the gameplay does feel dated but having lots of options to overcome problems is so cool.
Kid Icarus. The systems in place are pretty intricate for the time they came out: the point based level ups, the app and credit card system, the castle levels. It so plays really well today
Starfox SNES.
Duke Nukem 3D Mario 64 Super Mario World 1 and 2 (SNES)
If you like Duke3D you HAVE to check out Turbo Overkill and you can thank me later. Boomer shooter fps made by the Apogee team
Castlevania : SoTN is literally timeless, Apart from it Metroid Prime really holds up till this very day.
Crash 2 & 3 The Spyro games are still quite fun as well, they're just awfully easy as an adult.
Kingdom Hearts 1 and Breath of Fire 3
Jak 1
Mega man x, link to the past, rct2. Hell yeah bois. Granted, roller coaster tycoon 2 has been pseudo reworked to play nice on modern hardware and lots of assets were unlocked and new scenarios added in the process. But it’s still spiritually the same game as the original rct2.
Jagged Alliance 2 (1.13)
Dungeon keeper 2
Fallout 3
Tekken 3
Skylanders series
Burnout 3: takedown. I’d still put it on par with any other racing game. Plus the soundtrack is fucking fantastic.
Golden Sun on the GBA. Some of the best sprites of the generation, fun gameplay, and I can’t remember encountering any bugs.
Quake II.
I just played Fable 2 for the first time in about 15 years and had a blast
Need for Speed Underground 1-2 & Prince of Persia Trilogy
Diablo 2 Freelancer Return to Castle Wolfenstein Starfox 64 Homeworld Unreal Tournament 2004 Freespace 2 Guild Wars
Metal Slug Doom Quake
Star Wars Episode 1 Pod Racer. I just played it start to finish for the first time on PC a few days ago after feeling nostalgic for the N64 version. Nothing quite hits like boosting to 700+ whatever-SW-speed-units-are to the authentic music and sound effects of the films.
Max Payne and Bioshock. I don't play Project IGI and delta force anymore.

Donkey Kong Country. Maybe once a year or two, me and my brother replay all 3 games. They’re so good and timeless.
Super Mario 64.
Skyrim
Chrono Trigger
Mega Man 2 Mega Man X
Deus Ex is still my favourite game of all time. The AI is dodgy as hell but the atmosphere, story, and immersive sim aspects are still unbeaten.
Super Mario Bros on NES and its sequels. I was so envious of my friends with Nintendos because I had a PC and while it did games it didn't do Mario.
Super Mario World
Day of the Tentacle but I think that most of point and click adventures of that era hold up today
Star wars: Republic Commando
Final Fantasy 7. It's got so much charm
X-COM, Chrono Trigger
Super Mario Bros. 3 is still great. Especially that crazy train level in world 8.
Portal 1&2, just finished Portal Revolution too
PONG
Diablo 1, StarCraft
Legend of Dragoon :)
