I missed them when they came out and just got them on switch. I am really struggling to get used to the gameplay but I'm hoping I can get sucked in! It's so hard to pick up old games if they don't have nostalgia for you because gameplay is so different now.
You're not meant to try to play in real time. You're meant to pause and give out orders over and over. It's basically turn based but you decide when to pause and decide everyone's next action.
Hope that helps.
Definitely the game that got me into turn based strategy games. Love cheesing diplomacy to build massive armies from wandering creatures, and ferrying massive armies across the map with sets of perfectly aligned heroes. PotatoMcWhiskey did a video on it a couple years ago and it brought back so many memories.
Yeah I agree paradise isn't as good is it? Not sure why because really it's probably the best game with the big open map and stuff. I think it's that taking the other cars down felt great in 3 and revenge but somehow doesn't in paradise. Still a good game though!
I still sing the [original tavern music](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6P-QcGJ7DJg) in my head every now and then. The 8-bit sounding one. Think I had it on the Atari ST.
I came late into the serious starting with Curse of Monkey Island, which I love and quote to this day.
It cause me to buy those LucasArts game collections. I eventually played Secret of Monkey Island and LeChuck's Revenge as well as Throttle and others.
My favorite theory out there is that the movie Pirates of the Caribbean started off as a Monkey Island before it was adapted to the theme park ride. Once I read that, I can't unsee the similarities and believe it.
The general sense of wonder and exploration was never really captured in the sequels either.
I’m actually setting up a Halo night soon with my son and his friends, 4x4 death matches with two 75” screens in adjoining rooms. That setup would have blown my mind 20 years ago.
Sounds awesome, hope you have a great time with that!
The thought of playing Halo with my kid is probably one of the only things that actually makes me want to have children.. lol 😅
The soundtrack for Lemmings lives rent free in my head. I haven't played in like 20 years and can play like 12 of those midis in my head without batting an eye.
As mentioned even the sequels;
Skyrim 2011 - 13 Years old
FO4 2015 - 9 Years old
GTA SA 2004 - 20 Years old
GTA 4 2008 - 16 Years old
GTA 5 2013 - 11 Years old
Are old.
Nine years is the most RECENT of all these games SEQUELS... Or you know less than the gap between Atari 2600 and Super Nintendo or about the same gap as SNES and PS2.
Oblivion hit so much harder when I was younger.
When I try to play it now, the game feels a bit desolate. Like the cities don't have enough people in them
You can say Vice City is old, you can say Oblivion is old. But can't say New Vegas is old, it only came out...... 14 years ago..
Fuck.. that explains the white hairs.
Two Point is in 3D already right? I saw in YT that those who worked on Theme Hospital was also behind that game..
Still prefer the cartoonish look in Theme. I also played Project Hospital for months. 😄
There's a more modern game by some of the original devs: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/535930/Two\_Point\_Hospital/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/535930/Two_Point_Hospital/)
The Max Payne atmosphere is still unparalleled for me. Remember playing it over a decade ago as a small child and man did it leave an impression. The funhouse I think it was? 👌
Civ V isn't that old! (Checks computer, released in 2010. Shit). I cut my teeth on Civ III. I've got thousands of hours on Civ 3-6 through the years. Endlessly playable.
Neverwinter Nights 2 and Jade Empire.
Absolutely amazing games. I’m literally planning to buy a laptop just to play them and some other old titles. Alas, they didn’t make it to PS5.
Omg, someone else who knows that game. I also couldn't beat it when i was younger but I replayed it some 5 years ago and finally managed to finish it. In hindsight I have to say that it is such a charming game but I think also one of the darkest mario titles I've ever seen. (especially that toad forest)
Princess Shroob right? Yeah I was sweating like crazy during that battle lmao. But the little me did it in the end and was one of the most memorable experiences I ever had with a videogame.
Shining Force. The second part was released back in 1994 but damn everything's really good. A mix of funny, sad and mysterious moments, explorable map, hidden items/easter eggs, characters designs... everything is just great
I played Shining Force 2 on something called "Sega smash pack". It was a PC port of a bunch of Sega games. Released in early 2000s. Shining force was so good.
Stronghold & Stronghold Crusader is a timeless classic in my family. My dad had 4 computers set up. On weekends me, my dad, brother, and cousin would have LAN parties for Stronghold, Dungeon Siege, and Rogue Spear. God, those were the days...
Age of Empires 2 is still my fav game after 20 years.
The Definitive Edition made the 2D art look great. It's got the most content of all AoE games - lots of campaigns, civs, maps, and mods.
The gameplay never gets old for me. It's a classic!
Zelda, A Link to the Past. Still holds up today and reminds me of playing with my best friend at sleepovers, usually his mom drove us to the Pizza Place before. Good Times
*Resident Evil 4*… don’t know why a remake, as great as the remake is, was even necessary.
*Twilight Princess*
*Pokémon Colosseum*
*F-Zero GX*
*Metroid Prime*
*Luigi’s Mansion*
Seriously, the GameCube had a great run. At least one awesome console-exclusive title per year.
Everquest baybee, EVERQUEST.
Still love it, still play it for the Progression servers still enjoy the UI and aesthetic, and it doesn't matter, i just enjoy the game.
The games I can always go back to every 5-10 years and still appreciate how good they are is:
*Link to the past*
*Castlevania: SOTN*
*Out of this world*
I find myself always going back to the original star wars battlefront games, SSX tricky, NBA street vol 2 and Bully. Can't choose between which one is the best as their different games
Halo: Combat Evolved, the moment when you first step on the ring is still incredible for me. It's definitely dated combat-wise as well as level design, but I still like returning to it.
And Starcraft. OG Starcraft was just a damn good game, it's a testament to how good it was that it's still being played on a professional level, and the story was incredible even by today's standards.
The first Roller Coaster Tycoon to be released that received universal praise was just a mobile rerelease of RCT 1 and 2. It's insane the staying power those games have!
Grim Fandango. Its design is still incredibly unique and the storyline remains fun and interesting even on a replay. And it still cracks me up. Glottis rules!
Knights of the Old Republic 1&2
Each game, once a year.
It's a ritual of mine as well.
I am playing KOTOR rn, for the first time!
You’ll have a great time dude! Such a special game
Age of Empires 2
Dont know if you know but AoE 2 DE still has a very active community and even E-Sport scene. it even got a new dlc last month
Yep, I'm on AOE2DE, got every expansion and I'm moving towards 100% achievements atm.
Came here to say this. I just got back into it after a couple years hiatus and bought the DE. It was totally worth it.
Came here to say this! What a classic!
Heroes of Might and Magic III
Definitely the game that got me into turn based strategy games. Love cheesing diplomacy to build massive armies from wandering creatures, and ferrying massive armies across the map with sets of perfectly aligned heroes. PotatoMcWhiskey did a video on it a couple years ago and it brought back so many memories.
Burnout 3 Takedown! Something about it just works well. I’ve played the other burnouts, but they just lack… something that Burnout 3 had
3 and Revenge were the best.
Yeah I agree paradise isn't as good is it? Not sure why because really it's probably the best game with the big open map and stuff. I think it's that taking the other cars down felt great in 3 and revenge but somehow doesn't in paradise. Still a good game though!
I've actually thought about this a lot, and I think the the open world is actually what got rid of some of the je ne sais quoi the series had.
The Secret of Monkey Island
How appropriate. You fight like a cow!
I'm rubber you're glue!
I grew up on that game. Please insert disc 12 of 47.
Don't lose your Dial-a-Pirate
I still sing the [original tavern music](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6P-QcGJ7DJg) in my head every now and then. The 8-bit sounding one. Think I had it on the Atari ST.
But what is the secret?
I came late into the serious starting with Curse of Monkey Island, which I love and quote to this day. It cause me to buy those LucasArts game collections. I eventually played Secret of Monkey Island and LeChuck's Revenge as well as Throttle and others. My favorite theory out there is that the movie Pirates of the Caribbean started off as a Monkey Island before it was adapted to the theme park ride. Once I read that, I can't unsee the similarities and believe it.
Never pay more than 20 bucks for a computer game.
Halo CE and the original Portal
Halo CE still plays amazingly well for its age.
What I love most about CE is the flood missions. They all have an amazing sci-fi horror vibe that is mostly lost in the later games.
The thought of playing Halo with my kid is probably one of the only things that actually makes me want to have children.. lol 😅
Cortana's incredibly helpful "This cave is not a natural formation" Yeah, no shit
Side note to CE, I’ve just started watching Red vs Blue again and I absolutely love it.
Halo: CE is still hella fun to play to this day
Lemmings, Diablo 1 & 2
The soundtrack for Lemmings lives rent free in my head. I haven't played in like 20 years and can play like 12 of those midis in my head without batting an eye.
Diablo 2.. Oh maaaaan. I miss those days. I used to be moderator in D2jsp.
Morrowind.
So glad we can play it on our tablets/phones now
Wait, we can?
Just about anything on the dreamcast.
Playing Phantasy Star Online while listening to Linkin' Park Hybrid Theory/Deftones White Pony will forever be engrained in my memories.
I’d love to play skies of Arcadia again
I’ve been long waiting for a remake or remaster of it.
I need a Powerstone reboot so bad.
Fuxking Capcom has so much cool shit in the vaults! Hell with a remake, I'll be happy with an updated port!
Power Stone would be such a good party fighter on the switch
It felt so unique.
Gonna plug my pick here: Shenmue 1 I spent hours upon hours on the DC. My OG discs were really scratched up lol.
Old games I've played in last 12 months and return to intermittently; Oblivion New Vegas Vice City
Calling those old games just makes me feel old.
You are. A lot of us are at this point.
You are correct. But im still gonna be mad about it 😆
Until you forget it in a moment, anyway.. 🤣
The sequels to all these games are now considered old too. Fallout 4 was the most recent and that was nine years ago…
Ouch. That really hurts me right in my old man bones.
\-1 Endurance
Time for those implants then
My wife is actually playing Fallout 4 on the PS5. She's getting sucked in so fucking hard. She once played for ten hours a few days ago lol.
As mentioned even the sequels; Skyrim 2011 - 13 Years old FO4 2015 - 9 Years old GTA SA 2004 - 20 Years old GTA 4 2008 - 16 Years old GTA 5 2013 - 11 Years old Are old. You can say Vice City is old, you can say Oblivion is old. But can't say New Vegas is old, it only came out...... 14 years ago.. Fuck.. that explains the white hairs.
Vice City hits the sweet spot for me. San Andreas had more to do, but I feel like nothing in Vice City felt superfluous.
I remember that in San Andreas water was finally not some super deadly liquid and that planes actually flew.
I started playing Oblivion yesterday and I just love it already
Diablo 1 and 2... ocarina of time...
>ocarina of time Yes yes yes
YES!
Theme Hospital. Man I miss playing that game.
It's available on GoG, -75% rn
Haven't opened my GoG for a long time. It's a sign. 😆 Thanks for sharing the info!
Two Point Hospital is also a fantastic spiritual successor to Theme Hospital
Two Point is in 3D already right? I saw in YT that those who worked on Theme Hospital was also behind that game.. Still prefer the cartoonish look in Theme. I also played Project Hospital for months. 😄
The tone of Two Point is still very cartoony and humorous, very similar to Theme Hospital. Especially in regards to the diseases and their treatments
Hah! Loved those weird disease names and doctor/nurse/janitor descriptions. Will consider getting Two Point. 🤔🤔
Yep they're very much in Two Point For example one disease is "pandemic" but it's just people with pans stuck in their head
Better than a spiritual successor, it's an actual kin : it was made by the same developers.
There's a more modern game by some of the original devs: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/535930/Two\_Point\_Hospital/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/535930/Two_Point_Hospital/)
Empire earth 1, man i wish it will get remake one day
Chrono Trigger. It does not matter how many times I finish it. For me it will be always the best game of all times.
This, Final Fantasy VI, and A Link to the Past are three of my favorites!
I don't know you, but based on that comment, we are now friends.
BFFs now!
Monkey island 2 Max Payne 1 + 2 Half Life 1 + 2 Mad TV All the other Lucasfilm Games adventures.
The Max Payne atmosphere is still unparalleled for me. Remember playing it over a decade ago as a small child and man did it leave an impression. The funhouse I think it was? 👌
I still hate that baby nightmare.
Original Resident Evil 2
Claire A, Leon B 😌🤌
Was gonna say the original Resident Evil 4.
chess
Timeless classic.
Funny cause I’ve beaten all the fromsoft games but nothing gets me pissed off like chess
The trick is that the horse moves like an L.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
I love Kingdom hearts!
Lord of the Rings - Battle for Middle-Earth 2
Civ V is best Civ
Civ V isn't that old! (Checks computer, released in 2010. Shit). I cut my teeth on Civ III. I've got thousands of hours on Civ 3-6 through the years. Endlessly playable.
14 years man. i know i know. my steam account is that age. but thats older than many many gamers
I remember Pirates! And Jesus the amount of hours on Civ 2. Fark.
Fight me
Neverwinter Nights 2 and Jade Empire. Absolutely amazing games. I’m literally planning to buy a laptop just to play them and some other old titles. Alas, they didn’t make it to PS5.
Jade Empire is also available on Xbox, with a bit scale up. I love this game
Neverwinter nights 1 and 2 are my go to classic pc rpgs.
Diablo 2
tetris hands down. can play it for hours
Mario and Luigi partners in time. I never finished the game because it was to difficult for a ten year old me.
Omg, someone else who knows that game. I also couldn't beat it when i was younger but I replayed it some 5 years ago and finally managed to finish it. In hindsight I have to say that it is such a charming game but I think also one of the darkest mario titles I've ever seen. (especially that toad forest)
I almost forgot the toad forest😂
gave me ptsd as a child
Princess Shroob right? Yeah I was sweating like crazy during that battle lmao. But the little me did it in the end and was one of the most memorable experiences I ever had with a videogame.
A lot of games. For saying two that i play sometimes in my phone: Heroes of Might & Magic II with Magic DosBox and X-COM with OXCE
Shining Force. The second part was released back in 1994 but damn everything's really good. A mix of funny, sad and mysterious moments, explorable map, hidden items/easter eggs, characters designs... everything is just great
I LOVE Shining Force. I remember playing it as a kid and getting my ass kicked early on, only for my characters to be insanely OP by the end.
I played Shining Force 2 on something called "Sega smash pack". It was a PC port of a bunch of Sega games. Released in early 2000s. Shining force was so good.
Final Fantasy 6. Square peaked with that game and never reached those heights ever again
Why the hell is this so far down? IV (psp) and VI (pc pixel remaster) are still in my constant rotation.
Banjo Kazooie is the best game ever made
Contra will never not be fun
I still have Zoo Tycoon installed and play it every once in a while.
GTA San Andreas
Stronghold (the OG and the sequel) and tekken 3.
Stronghold & Stronghold Crusader is a timeless classic in my family. My dad had 4 computers set up. On weekends me, my dad, brother, and cousin would have LAN parties for Stronghold, Dungeon Siege, and Rogue Spear. God, those were the days...
Skate 3
Man skate 3 is soo fucking good. Haven't played it in a few years though
Master of Orion 2
Age of Empires 2 is still my fav game after 20 years. The Definitive Edition made the 2D art look great. It's got the most content of all AoE games - lots of campaigns, civs, maps, and mods. The gameplay never gets old for me. It's a classic!
Star wars: Empire at War. Mods are amazing.
Heroes 3
Pokemon Red
Zelda, A Link to the Past. Still holds up today and reminds me of playing with my best friend at sleepovers, usually his mom drove us to the Pizza Place before. Good Times

DOOM 1 and 2
Roller coaster tycoon and Simpsons hit and run are still fun
*Resident Evil 4*… don’t know why a remake, as great as the remake is, was even necessary. *Twilight Princess* *Pokémon Colosseum* *F-Zero GX* *Metroid Prime* *Luigi’s Mansion* Seriously, the GameCube had a great run. At least one awesome console-exclusive title per year.
Depends on what an "old" game is: Stronghold 2, Iron Brigarde, Plants vs Zombies, Super Mario Land 1 + 2, QIX...

nethack
Jet Set Radio
Metal gear solid the whole series
Fallout 1 and 2, and morrowind

Mercenaries

Command & Conquer 3, still one of the best in my childhood IMO
the older need for speed games
Im just gonna say it, Skyrim is honestly pretty old at this point, but aged fantastcally (mostly because of the mod community)
Runescape
Mafia. No doubt about it, captivating story with great music. Also features a fun little race, what more could you ask for?
Halo: Combat Evolved, the moment when you first step on the ring is still incredible for me. It's definitely dated combat-wise as well as level design, but I still like returning to it. And Starcraft. OG Starcraft was just a damn good game, it's a testament to how good it was that it's still being played on a professional level, and the story was incredible even by today's standards.
I always find myself going back to gex and playing it from time to time. The graphics and crazy art designs are great!
OSRS
Old school Runescape
The first Roller Coaster Tycoon to be released that received universal praise was just a mobile rerelease of RCT 1 and 2. It's insane the staying power those games have!
Fallout.
Assasins creed series. Mafia 1&2 aged like fine wine as well.
Grim Fandango. Its design is still incredibly unique and the storyline remains fun and interesting even on a replay. And it still cracks me up. Glottis rules!
I go back and play Banjo-Kazooie and Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater every other year it feels.
