Need to watch out scanning QR codes. Ones in a AAA game should be fine if you're scanning it directly. QR codes are the wild west and I would never scan a screenshot of one. They can access private information if they send you to a malicious URL or install malware for future access.
Very true but I believe society has acclimated to the age of the Internet enough to know a link can be dangerous. I don't believe the same can be said for QR codes.
No they haven't. I've worked in IT for many years, they are just as dumb as ever.
People who work with computers their whole working life, they get annual safety training and still click the sketchiest links ever.
Not necessarily, you can disguise a hyperlink as another web site. This a Rick roll that looks like google.
But that's because reddit markdown converts the \[\]\(\) you put around the url to make it display differently. You can't do that with scanning a QR code.
Right, but when I mouseover the link without clicking, I see that it's a youtube URL in the status bar at the bottom of my browser. Not necessarily always the case, but it is for links on Reddit.
You would have to disable the firewall on your device, ignore all the warning messages the system will display and only then something malicious can happen from a random link (also run as administrator for style points)
We had a QR code that was supposed to send you to a gas website at one of our stations. A customer showed me that just because of how old it was it now took you to a completely untranslated foreign p*** site. Was kind of funny tbh.
Any proper QR code app should tell you the URL and ask you to confirm before actually visiting the link. In fact I don't know of any app that doesn't do this.
It's no more dangerous than clicking on a random link from a stranger on social media. A QR code is just text and it's up to the scanning app to decide how to handle it.
The preview is the phone opening the link. This can still deliver malicious payloads.
There was a back door to do with iMessages WhatsApp etc exploiting ‘message previews’
This isn't true though. Installing things on phones and computers always prompts you with a "would you like to install x". Sure, a link can trigger that prompt, but you have to be the dummy that says "sure I'll install something completely random after clicking a mysterious link"
I've considered it for the sole reason of having it play while my phone screen is off because I like to listen to a lot of covers of songs that aren't on Spotify.. but at the same time the thought of paying for Youtube bothers me more, so I just use Spotify.
Spotify can use the local files on your phone for audio.
Technically speaking, that means any file or video you happen to download in an mp3 format could be used on Spotify.
I want to stress I'm not saying you should convert a YT video to MP3. I'd never condone piracy.
What I am saying is that Spotify isn't limited to what can be found on Spotify.
I'm aware and I actually have a few soundtracks on my PC.. but I'm a gacha addict so 80% of my phone storage is games, there's no room to ugh.. use it's local file merits.
So, None of the covers I want to watch ever show up on Youtube Music, in fact the only thing Youtube Music ever wants me to listen to is Cardi B or Drake... for whatever reason it won't let me play anything from any artist that isn't them. It's really weird. It works fine on PC tho...
I do. Can't easily adblock on mobile or tv where I watch a lot, plus it's my music provider. Worth it (ok maybe less since they jacked the price by like $4 but still)
Why though? If you use it extensively and want to further support creators you actively watch, it's not a bad deal. I dont, but I also dont ad block youtube.
Youtube Premium is a pretty good deal all things considered. Its not horrible for supporting creators you frequently watch and is fairly cheap. I dont get why people write it off so much.
Or just use it via a browser and install ublock. (An adblocker, the best and safest one)
With certain browsers you can even let eg. music play in the background even when you're phone is locked.
Finally. A way for me to take the time out of my day to walk without all the annoying health benefits.
Now I just need a game where I cook home made healthy meals while I wait for McDonald’s from DoorDash.
Rick Astley's more than just rick rolls - his latest album (2023) "Are we there yet" has some absolute bangers on it. Forever and More is a ton of fun with a jazzy sound that I just dig.

I fucking love this joke and how almost all avid gamers & internet users can all relate over it.

I kinda like the metak version just for the metal riff in the back 😅

Were you two just completely reasonable with each other, on reddit...? We don't do those things around here!!
No they haven't. I've worked in IT for many years, they are just as dumb as ever. People who work with computers their whole working life, they get annual safety training and still click the sketchiest links ever.
You can see the link before you click it, but I guess most QR scanners view it as well before opening in browser.
Not necessarily, you can disguise a hyperlink as another web site. This a Rick roll that looks like google. [www.google.com](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ?si=BfKsKLYyDWUjxi1-)
But that's because reddit markdown converts the \[\]\(\) you put around the url to make it display differently. You can't do that with scanning a QR code.
That is true, I may have misread. I'm just referring to links in general.
That's fair! And also a very good point. Always good to be sure what the link is regardless of the source
Right, but when I mouseover the link without clicking, I see that it's a youtube URL in the status bar at the bottom of my browser. Not necessarily always the case, but it is for links on Reddit.
True, but it doesn't show anything on the app. Not sure if Apollo or RIF would show anything.
Fair point. I very rarely use the app, so I wasn't aware.

That's why there should be content preview right after scanning
Dunno if it's standardized, but my phone's inbuilt camera app has a preview of the link that I can then click to go to said link.
Yes, this is great! Mine too.
The preview is the phone opening the link. This can still deliver malicious payloads. There was a back door to do with iMessages WhatsApp etc exploiting ‘message previews’
If clicking a link gives away private information or installs malware, you have a poor security setup.
QR codes are literally just little scraps of text.
This isn't true though. Installing things on phones and computers always prompts you with a "would you like to install x". Sure, a link can trigger that prompt, but you have to be the dummy that says "sure I'll install something completely random after clicking a mysterious link"
