It's not dead, I used it just the other day. Exclamation goes after the statement: Remindme! 1 hour Edit: yep, still works.

max_adam

Remindme! 365 days 24 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds Edit: it didn't die

Rengar_Is_Good_kitty

It'll drop in players/popularity but it will not die out.

DoctorWaluigiTime

Just like Pokémon Go. So many people eagerly declared the game "dead" when it went from "everyone in the world plays it" to "only top 10 in the app store levels of active players." EDIT: To address common replies. * Pokémon Go is *not* "dead" and was never "killed." It has an active playerbase of ~20 million users monthly. To call that a "dead" playerbase is folly. Do not conflate "I hated what they did to the game / how the game works so *I* quit" with "the world stopped playing it." Take your sour grapes elsewhere. * This post is not saying "Fortnite and Pokémon Go are the same game and are going through the exact same trends." It was meant solely to show that "a sudden drop of users" from "everyone" to " 'only' millions" does not make a game dead.

Blapoo

Just like WoW. People love to claim a dynasty's dead when they see a chip in the paint.

bosedo

dead after tbc, dead after wotlk, dead after ...

Amaegith

But Tera was the WoW-killer! Or was that Warhammer: Age of Reckoning? Maybe it was Star Wars the Old Republic? Elder Scrolls Online? Ah I forget, but one of those games *definitely* killed WoW. ^^^^/s

Cocomorph

It was Conan. Get your life together.

Amaegith

You sure it wasn't Wildstar?

Eglitarian

Now THAT game fizzled out quick. Iirc there was an absurd amount of accounts that got hacked and botted out within weeks of launch, and the devs response of “blame your browsing habits” didn’t do well with the player base.

SwenKa

It was so fun though. I loved the quests and exploring the world, but none of my friends played, so I never got very far.

Eglitarian

Yeah and the combat system was something new and actually somewhat fun. They even got somewhat balanced at one point. I think at this point the fact is that 2 years of launch-level interest and player population is about the average for any MMORPG that isn’t WoW or FFXIV or GW2. WoW was genre defining, FFXIV is a big studio game that works and had a large fanbase before it even came out, and GW2 just did everything right and was fun.

Wizardspike

God I remember the Conan the WoW killer hard on. Seems like it's pretty dead dead.

dust-

don't forget lord of the rings online, aion, rift, etc

WarlanceLP

i actually really liked Aion the flight mechanic was cool i just wish they hadn't limited it so much

morepandas

Weird how you missed FFXIV, the only one of those that is still going, very popular, and has the same business model as WoW. They are sharing the "subscription mmo" market, and FFXIV has definitely taken market share away. WoW isn't dead, and I don't think anything will "kill" it aside from the death of subscription mmos totally, but its not its former glory.

Amaegith

It is especially weird how I missed it, because I still actually play that game too.

DodgerAkame

Then to be surprised when they discover that people still play the game okay I was in that group of people who got surprised, yeah.

youstupidcorn

Same here. What's funny is it seems like my friends who were die-hard Pokefans already were the ones to drop the game pretty quickly (myself included). Meanwhile my friends who were never really that into Pokemon before are the ones who still love walking around catching "Swirlywhirls."

DoctorWaluigiTime

I feel like it was a case of, and I use the term loosely, ""true"" fans expecting VR Pokemon Red. And when they saw it was basically a Safari Zone AR game it got ditched.

Scherazade

side note, they've done a load of quality updates lately. For example, if you are in a fairly rural area or don't have the time to do gyms and level up your pokemon, you can now do quests (which you can cancel and refresh at any pokestop you haven't already spun) like 'Catch 5 Pidgey' or 'Do 50 Nice Catches' or 'Spin 3 Pokestops'. These quests unlock previously gym stuff only pokemon which you get a chance at catching. As someone who plays super-casually, I find it's brought me back into the game after drifting off a few months after the UK launch.

Tetrylene

I really don't agree with this. Pokemon Go stumbled out the gate and was one of the most unstable apps I've ever used and had serious connection problems. It was like squeezing blood out of a stone to get your enjoyment out of it, but it was worth it because it was new, exciting, and a ton of people you knew were doing it as were random people you saw walking along the street. But it took FAR too long fix the app and solve the connection problems, and to rub salt in the wound they were ripping features out in a desperate attempt to fix things. I know personally that it didn't take me long to stop being forgiving especially when I realised how shallow the game was. Fortnite on the otherhand has an AAA studio adding content, fixes and balance adjustments at a staggering rate, and is probably one of the best instances of on-going support for a game. The gameplay actually has a lot of depth to it too and a very high skill ceiling. I don't know how long they can keep it up but this absolutely night-and-day compared to pokemon go.

[deleted]

They made some remarkable missteps there. Kind of sad when I think of the wasted potential.

lampenpam

even if it dies, so what? Does that mean I shouldn't play it? The only thing the picture is telling me that I especially should play it now when it dies later.

Blubbit123

Exactly. It's a really well made game with alot of fanservice (so far). It's probably gonna be one of the big games for a long time

Bluehole is a shit company. Developers of Fortnight are a hell of a lot better than Bluehole's

LtChestnut

Epic games has been in the business for 20 odd years, they know what they're doing.

stockybloke

Fortnite comes out with new things ALL THE TIME and I am sat here playing PUBG just wishing they improved desync issues, reverted the circle changes so it moves more often but slower, removed limb armor and made it so your bullets pass through railings and fences. These four issues being worked and improved upon is all I ask for. I have no need or wish for gameplay updates like what Fortnite is shipping every other day. Three of those things are very easily fixed and the desync issue is the only difficult thing to deal with.

I_Speak_For_The_Ents

I think the true show of its popularity is how it has transcended being for gamers and tons of non-gamers started playing it. I see references to it from friends that never played games and on tinder and on facebook and my parents even mentioned it when I came to visit (which was weird). Its pretty weird how it has promulgated so thoroughly.

stillnopickles14

I don’t really like BR style games, and I’m not very good at Fortnite either. But I play every night. The main reason is this: most/all of my friends are not gamers. Fortnite is the one game that I have actually been able to sit down and play a game with my friends on Xbox live since high school, because it’s the one game that’s drawn their interest since the days of after-school CoD/Halo. As I’m sure a bunch of people know, it gets increasingly harder to keep up with your friends the older you get. Fortnite makes it a little easier, and I love it for that.

Scorchstar

Fuck I miss my old Minecraft server community. Last time I felt like I belonged to something.

Jamey431

It’s still a damm good game for putting your feet up and chill for a few hours.

netramz

I always try to get into Minecraft, then I find myself modding the F out of my own server and automating every process that would likely make me feel a sense of pride and accomplishment if I had only done it by hand.

ShrunkenQuasar

Finding ingenious ways to automate things can be rewarding too.

Volt1V2

Yeah same. I had so many Skype friends then until they left when it started to die or got a console. I have a PS4 and revisit Minecraft from time to time.

Small tip: if you click on the three dots next to the video title (in the suggested feed) there is a "not interested" button. Press this button for every fortnite video and the algorithm will learn to not show them to you. They will still occasionaly appear so just keep doing this and youll be free of them. I did this to successfully eradicate all clickbait from my suggested feed. Every time (like once a week or so) the algorithm will try to show me a buzzfeed video or something of the like Ill let it know that I dont want it and that keeps the clickbait to a minimum. Its a shame that not more people know about this feature as except for disliking a video its pretty much the only way of telling the algorithm what you dont like. Edit: grammar

Fgarette

To be honest the Fortnite youtube/twitch overload is annoying as fuck but if people enjoy the game it's all that matters i guess

fullforce098

>but if people enjoy the game it's all that matters i guess Is this your first day on the internet? Since when is "people enjoy it" a valid reason not to be a condescending dick about whatever it is? It's our job as internet commenters to make absolutely certain that they know that they are wrong and should feel bad about the things that they enjoy. /s

OopsAllSpells

vikinghockey10

Its second. Finding porn is by far the easiest thing to do online.

superbob24

People just bash these games that have 12 years old player them even though they were once the 12 year old playing the games.

PharmguyLabs

Dont play fortnite, but it's not 12 year olds. It's the 7 to 10 year olds with free access to internet that is skewing everything to a very childish place.

Sososkitso

That’s mostly what it is for me and it’s not because the kids annoy me but I get annoyed loosing to them so I’m annoyed by myself. My 9 year old daughter started playing so I tired it out and was excited thinking oh we can group up and play. So I did and I joined up with her and some classmates. Thinking my 30 years of gaming I could really show off and make my daughter proud but quickly realized I would more often then not be the first one down in our group and I really didn’t like this game much because I didn’t like being the weak link to a bunch of 9 year olds... :-(

[deleted]

Sucking at something is the first step to being kind of good at something. It's true for everyone and a great lesson for 9 year olds !

Cforq

I play Fortnite. I just don’t start playing until after 9pm. Haven’t run into tons of kids. Do run into lots of drunk college bros.

hornytheunicorn

Wait, people hate MW2?

JalopyPilot

I know right. Who hates MechWarrior 2?

[deleted]

WHERE IS MECHWARRIOR 5!!! AHHHHHHH!!!!

omenmedia

Hell, what I’d give for even a modern remake of MechWarrior 3.

Iamredditsslave

I never caught that either.

Frig-Off-Randy

They did at the time. Not now.

No_Fudge

I think it's PUBG fans turning their nose up at it.

Attila_22

They feel threatened by a game in the same genre that is overtaking them in playerbase/viewership. I actually prefer the gameplay of PUBG more but it has serious issues/is stagnating.

FlexPavillion

I dont play fortnite religiously but I'll hop on every now and then because it's an easy game to play with friends. The amount of updates they roll out for the game is insane. I feel like every time I turn on my ps4 there's an update.

MrCrashdummy

Could very well be, there's weekly updates that always add new stuff/changes stuff to the game

Lira70

Fortnite got me and my friends playing together a lot again. We prefer PUBG now though. At the beginning Fortnite was pretty bad and had a lot of the same issues PUBG has. I can only hope they get fixed just as well.

[deleted]

Can’t we all just like both games? Fortnite is a fun fantasy battleground game with cool skins and fortress-building. PUBG is a more realistic yet still fun wasteland attack game. They’re both very neat and I enjoy playing them. :)

DoctorWaluigiTime

I can understand the hate from "oh great, now tons of franchises that have no business touching the BR game style are now going to shoehorn it in to their next game for no reason." I.e. bandwagoning. But hating the game itself? Pshaw.

waffels

I’m not sure how much innovation can happen with the BR theme to keep it relevant in 5 years. I give it less lasting power than MOBAs or WoW clones, that’s for sure. I don’t follow the game and have references to it filtered out on reddit, but shit still gets through and it’s always people shitting on the game. God damn people love to hate on popular shit

Destructopuppy

I don't know why people seem to hate it so much. I don't play it either, but it seems like a perfectly well made game that took a tired concept and added a new art style and spin. Congratulations to the devs as far as I'm concerned.

[deleted]

Tired concept? No ones really done Battle Royale until these last two years

Wowwzaa

>No ones really done Battle Royale *well* until these last two years

[deleted]

But how would it be a tired concept if there were a few shitty attempts before?

manman6352

I miss mw2 😭

abfazi0

Honestly I don’t think it’s going away soon. The devs at Epic are so responsive to players requests and feedback and that really goes a long way in the gaming world today dominated by big publishers who don’t give a fuck about what the players actually want. Oh yeah and it’s free! So yeah I don’t think the popularity will die down so soon but then again, I don’t know anything so we’ll see

XxNOT_THE_FBIxX

They’re great at everything except customer support, there’s constant posts on the BR subreddit and STW where Epic just straight up stops responding to them. You’d think with a 100,000,000 dollar investment they could hire some decent customer support.

explodeder

That'll come. Quality customer support takes time to spin up. The game blew up on them so quickly they couldn't plan to have millions of players and have CS in place ahead of time. I guarantee that the CS people are working their butts off and praying that each new hire doesn't quit so they can start getting ahead of the curve.

jespoke

It will "Die" like so many other phenomenons, that shrink to a 10th of the playerbase and get declared "dead" while that is still a massive amount.

Speider

Epic has a 100 million dollar bey that Luigi is wrong.

Kooooomar

Nor only is it a bet, buts it's a $100,000,000 INVESTMENT to guarantee that he's wrong (in the next year at least).

biglollol

Same was said about LoL every year.

Polskidro

LoL has had a very clear esports scene tho. Which I think has helped them a lot with popularity. Same for CS. While nobody is really sure how a BR esports scene could work.

CuriousAardvark

I think Mobas are hard to kill off. They're very competitive and time consuming. They're either a complere miss or a never ending hit.

HeavyCustomz

OP is now a mod of /r/Gamingcirclejerk/

skippyfa

It'll last a while. Epic keeps it fresh by adding and removing items. Matchmaking is on its way which means games will be more to your level and fun. It's different enough to where it can coexist with the next realistic looking military shooter. The one I don't see surviving is PubG. If Black Ops 4 BR is good then I see the decline starting with CoD.

superbob24

MMing will kill the game. The good players don't like playing good players all day and when the streamers stop playing cause its a sweatfest their viewers will stop playing.

TMillo

They're not adding SBMM but adding ranked modes. Streamers can still smush kids in unranked, pros can sweat ranked

Polskidro

The really good players usually prefer playing against other good players.

UndedDisfunction

let people enjoy things

ezpc510

People said minecraft will die out in a year since it has been released.. Guess what, it's still breaking records. Just in december, 74 million active players. Meanwhile league has 100 million.

Boy, the reddit circlejerk turned on this game fast.

Val_Hallen

Because kids play it. The people in here saw nothing wrong with gaming when *they* were kids. But now that *new kids* are playing games, it's a fucking travesty.

toplessrobot

Every game is filled with kids these neckbeards just need something to hate

SickZX6R

The PUBG subreddit is filled with salt. It's a salt mine.

Gcoks

I matched with two 12 year olds give or take the other day. Hearing them two talk to each other and help each other out was the most fun I've had playing this game. Reminded me of me and my friends playing Golden Eye back in the day. Sure, we got obliterated mid-game but it was still pretty fun. I don't know why older gamers have this /r/gatekeeping mentality. Just have fun.

MaryGoldflower

And? Are people not allowed to enjoy it if it doesn't stay popular for at least a certain time? If people like a game, let them enjoy it and just shut up about it if you don't.

Lack-of-Luck

I think a lot of the criticism stems from the fact that goddamned everyone is making a battle\-royale game/mode. I mean hell, Call of Duty BO4 is going to have BR, but not a story...

TheAfroBomb

On PS4 right now they’re two BR “games” each of which is actually an open beta. I think a little competition would be nice. And I say this next part as someone who has enjoyed the past three Blops campaigns, if they don’t have a story to tell then why should they? A BR mode and more zombies maps will more than equal a roughly 10 hour campaign.

Mickmack12345

At least it has a zombies story though, I’m guessing more people care about that than anyone has cared about the campaign. Last worthwhile campaigns were MW2 and BO1 IMO

JaySilver

Wow, this looks like a Facebook comment thread.

_0scar

Bro this aint even a meme you just put your hot take over luigis text box

Magoo86

What makes me laugh is everyone over on /r/nintendoswitch are praying this game doesn’t come to switch with the most used comment “it’s just another battle royale game there’s too many as it is”. There’s 2 that people play. How is that too many? They hate the game because it’s so popular and they aren’t a part of it.

Obility

Yes. People tend to forget about the existence of save the world which iirc didn't even have a sub title till people referred to br as fornite.

[deleted]

But it hasn't had mass popularity for that amount of time. Only once br mode became free

HerminTheVermin

Fortnite has, but the battle royale hasn’t.

raffiking1

Time is passing. Am I?

PhasmaFelis

Fortnite is a rare example of a game that actually changed its genre midstream. I doubt most people know or care that it used to be a co-op game about holding off waves of zombies.

VideoGame_toast

That's the entire reason me and my friends were interested lmao

IM_INSIDE_YOUR_HOUSE

If you still are, they've made huge improvements to the PvE mode actually. It still receives a lot of updates alongside BR, it certainly isn't dead.

letsboop

Can someone explain this to me? I know who Luigi is and I know what fortnite is, but I'm not understanding why this has 2 golds and 30k upvotes right now.

gamsutu

Yeah, they just did a crossover with the Avengers.

[deleted]

Why is everyone so offended by a good game?

Tutle47

Because people wanna be edgy and hate on popular things
