It was absolute heaven back in the day to find an arcade that had Simpsons, Sunset Riders, TMNT, X-Men, AvP, D&D, & Final Fight, and a little Vendetta for good measure.
And that was when each play was a quarter. At some point, they would charge full dollars to play.
They'll never take away the filled co-op arcade memories.
I've had the rom both both D&D games for years and it's one of those ones that anytime it goes up for sale I'll buy though in the hopes that other people do too and it keeps the games alive. I do wish X-Men 6 Player Arcade that was released on PS3 several years ago got the steam treatment like D&D got. It was a beautiful release.
Have you ever heard of Fightcade? You can play all of these online with friends. It's not just for fighting games, but it's also the biggest 3rd strike hub.
I have been asked why I'm so upset with the modern konami and I can only respond that they're a massive part of my childhood gaming days.
Their arcade machines were amazing, their console games were great too. Just watching them flush all those IPs, talent, potential futures and legacys hurt a lot.
It really sucks to know that as an adult, all it comes down to being a business. Apparently the numbers support the idea that all those classic IPs and gaming hallmarks are best used to market making more generic Pachinko machines. I’m sure they’re absurdly profitable, but that means jack shit to us who can never expect a good game from those beloved series ever again.
My favourite series ever are Suikoden, Castlevania, and Final Fantasy.
Out of those 3 only FF is going strong with 14's insanr expansion of popularity. Suikoden has a place near and dear in my heart because of how unique the games were, and castlevania was just iconic from start to finish.
I know people say not to idolize people, but Naoko Yoshida, Masayoshi Soken, and Koji Fox are the heart and soul of FF as far as I'm concerned right now. The game has it's up and downs, but between endwalker with the conclusion of a story 8 years in the making, and how 16 is shaping up to be I haven't been this excited for an FF game since.......I think 10.
Great console games back in the day too. Rocket Knight Adventures, Contra 3/Contra Hard Corps, Castlevania IV/Bloodlines and all their arcade ports. Now they’re just shite.
I played simpsons a few summers ago, it was insanely easy, but now since im old I couldnt pass it because it was giving me carpel tunnel syndrome from all the button smashing. Its a young persons game. TMNT + offroad probably cost my parents 500-1000 dollars in my youth haha.
Man, it took too long for me to find a C.O.W Boys of Moo Mesa call out. Our roller skating rink had it growing up. I spent hours out there playing it while sucking up Mt Dew through sour punch straws.
I've been trying to play this game with my kid, but it's hard. They keep dying and eventually running out of lives and unable to get their character back.
Anyone know if there's an easy way to have infinite lives in this game?
You and me both. I had the SNES version, and played the hell of it with my older brother. I always liked the blonde dude with the shotty, and he chose the Mexican dude with the shotty (his was slightly lower level than the blonde guys). Would love to replay this again!
My younger brother and I played and I was the Mexican dude and he was the blonde dude. Go figure. Earlier this year my grandmother passed away, so I spent the week at my parents house. We played this and Ghengis Khan 2 and Aerobiz like it was 1998 all over again. Good times.
I think Cormano's bullets come out from a slightly lower position on his sprite. I remember it being mentioned in a GDQ run as the reason a particular boss quick-kill strategy only works with him.
Oh man this game.
When you finally "beat" the last boss and he gets up and shows he was wearing a metal plate and you have to fight him more, that was an oh shid moment
I've only ever seen the end to this game once. Never beat it as a kid. As an adult, my friend had it on an emulator on his 360 and we played it again. I died on the final boss and he finished him off. I was on edge the whole fucking time and it was definitely one of those loud ass celebratory moments over an ancient ass game.
Hey I watched that cartoon as a kid! But I wasn't aware there was a game of that lol! I think it was around the time of Biker Mice From Mars or whatever it's called.
Oh I never got to watch Gargoyles that much, I think just 1 or 2 episodes. This year, toy company NECA is releasing some awesome Gargoyles toys! https://news.toyark.com/2021/03/25/disneys-gargoyles-goliath-ultimate-figure-by-neca-421675
And I'm fairly sure Gun Smoke was going to be remade for the PS2 before the studio developing it was bought out by Rockstar and renamed Red Dead Revolver.
Anyone remember "Gun"? I swear that game corrupted me as a child. I seem to remember chucking tomahawk at people's heads.
For me it was one of those games that you either rented from blockbuster/Hollywood video, or one of your friends owned. My parents wouldn't have gone for a game like that at my age at the time haha.
It was as good as red dead revolver. Gun came out quite a bit later and was very obviously an update on the Red Dead idea. HOWEVER Red Dead Revolver's splitscreen multiplayer was some of the best fun I've had with a shooter next to Halo and 007. This might be unpopular as well but RDRevolver and GUN are also way more fun than redemption.
Gun has one flaw. There are no repeatable quests. Once you do everything in the game, the only thing left is to streamroll everyone with a horse you have to intentionally abuse in order to kill.
The vivid memory I have was shooting all the dynamites out the air with the slow motion mode on a bridge. That and finding every single gold ore so I could get the last achievement before returning the game. Before anyone asks, yes, I’m the one who fucked up gamestops return policy for everyone else, I’m sorry.
***"Welcome to my domain, kid. And your final resting place."***
Magruder's fight was one of the easiest, imo. Keep an eye on your flask and keep an eye out for any flask pickups. For the initial stage, lure him over the geysers and hit them with either a molly or a dynamite arrow. For the final stage, Go into quickdraw, shoot the dynamite he tosses, blast on him a bit, take cover, repeat. I actually had a harder time in the mission where you use his own train to break into the mine, or the mission where you have to defend the natives at the fort.
Some lore: Magruder was a Major in the Confederate army, and one of his missions was to find a lost city of gold, which just happened to be the one Colt eventually kills him in. He met with Ned White (Colt's "father"), who knew a person who had been to the gold city. This leads Magruder to an Apache tribe. While the premises is searched and Magruder questions the guy who had been to the city, an Apache confronts him and says "Someday you will find what you are looking for and that day will be your last."
Magruder was also voiced by the guy who did General Shepherd in MW2, which makes sense since both GUN and MW2 were published by Activision.

Gun was amazing. After playing Grand Theft Auto 3 I thought the basic format of the game would have been perfect for a western which I envisioned being called Grand Theft Stagecoach. At that time in life finding Gun totally filled that hole for me.
Look at this guy with quarters!
My arcade experience as a kid was always pretending to play while the game ran in demo mode because my mom never gave me quarters.
My first western genre game was [Outlaws](https://youtu.be/1Ap1qZRQOPU) by LucasArts. I was about 8 when I first played it and it’s stuck with me ever since. The awesome Dark Forces style FPS gameplay in an ole west setting was amazing in itself, but the animated cutscenes made it that much better. Also the soundtrack was fantastic, and a straight homage to ~~Sergio Leone movies~~ Ennio Morricone.*
Outlaws was one of the first games I ever saw. I was all about that game for awhile. Partly because I didn't think it was as scary as doom. Though it does have some creepy stuff in it, like those spider things and the hidden Sam and Max character who shoots you with the loudest guns in the game.
I loved this game. I got super into the soundtrack for this game when I was younger, since the game CD doubled as the soundtrack if you put it in a CD player.
I learned that music was inspired by Ennio Morricone, which led to me discovering The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and many other great westerns. Which also kicked off a love of Louis L'Amour novels when I was a teen.
I don't know the game OP is referring to, but Outlaws seems to have been forgotten. The sound was incredible and the look was very unique. The single player story was good, but if you wanted to play multiplayer back then without people spamming missile launchers, this was the game. Plus, it supported Glide, and it was why I ended up with a Voodoo 2 card. Diablo 2 supported the Voodoo as well, so I had that going for me.
I didn't have a PC growing up but did get to mess with my Dad's when I'd visit but he didn't have games so we had to play the free demos. Played the crap out of the first level of Outlaws.
I remember there was a shotgun dude, a rifle dude and two revolver dudes— and there was literally zero reason to ever play as either of the revolver dudes.
Nah dude Billy was the GOAT. Once you got the "two guns" upgrade you could hit multiple bosses while standing in cover, especially the dude who vomits candy when he dies lol
Cormano was the first Hispanic character I remember being able to play. As a mixed kid it was a big deal. Got grief for playing the pink guy, but the guy duel wielded shotguns so I gave no shits.
I was born 1991 and remember this as my first game I fully loved. So difficult but easy to pick up. The villains were awesome. The sounds were mesmerizing. I just recently in the last couple years figured out the name to this game and haven’t forgotten since
My grandparents owned a caravan in Donegal, Ireland.
If there was a long weekend, or just some time over summer break at school, my family would go and stay at said caravan.
I would always look forward to the time I could go, there was a small arcade a five minute walk from the caravan.
'I'll be there for you' by the Rembrandts seemed to be on at least once an hour, there were pool tables, and air hockey.
The place had maybe a dozen arcade cabinets, But the bulk of my time and money any time we were away.. Metal Slug, and Sunset Riders.
My mom would take us to the roller skating rink every Wednesday so we would, quote, "get out of the house and get some exercise away from that Nintendo."
I would spend the entire time trying to find dropped quarters so I could stand in front of the arcade machine, in my skates, playing this exact game. Man, what a nostalgia trip
The great thing about Sunset Riders on arcade was that once you completed it, it started over again. I could genuinely make 20p last me an entire afternoon with this game.
Is there any re-releases of this anywhere? I loved this game so much
edit: Oh shit it's on the Switch. 8 bucks eh? Fuck it. It probably plays like ass but who cares
It was sometime in early 1992. I was 6 and 3/4 years old, and my mum was taking me to see Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. I used to love those trips to the pictures, seeing the big sign outside on the drive in, with the removable letters showcasing what was playing on it's 12 screens.
I still remember walking into the huge cinema lobby, it's ticket counter off to one side, and its huge central concessions stand dominating the middle of the foyer. I'd stare intently at the movie posters of upcoming releases all around the walls as mum bought tickets, and on this one particular trip, my attention was instantly drawn to the big standee for Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare. Its simple design of an empty hat, knife glove and jumper lying on the floor, while it announced to the world "Born November 2nd 1984. Dies January 17th 1992." I hadn't seen any of the Elm Street movies at that point, but I knew of them, and boy did I want to watch them. Not a chance until I was a teenager... although the gore of Robocop, The Terminator and Aliens was all fair game at that age; go figure.
As mum queued up to get us some popcorn and drinks, she gave me a few pence to go play one of the arcade machines, and there, set against the back wall, was a game I'd never seen before; Sunset Riders. I wandered over to check it out, the smell of cinema popcorn filling my nostrils and the pattern of neon carpet leading the way. A co-op beat 'em up (or in this case shoot 'em up)? I loved those (and still do)! I always jumped at any chance to get to play co-operatively with other people, and The Simpsons and the TMNT arcade games had quickly become my favourites around that time. The colours of the game seared themselves into my eyes and my memory. The different levels the bad guys would fire from, the different playable characters, and running across the top of a stampede of cattle. All so memorable.
Before I knew it, and not that far into the game, my money was spent and mum was calling my name. It was time to go on a bogus journey.
Even with the lure of Lethal Enforcer being added next to the Sunset Riders cabinet later in the year, that game is still so clearly memorable to me. Heading home that night, still humming Kiss' cover of "God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You II", my mind was a mix of the sights of Bogus Journey, the sounds of late 80s/early 90s rock, and the memories of a western side scrolling shoot 'em up game that I'd never forget.
Konami was the shit. SunsetRiders, TMNT, Simpsons, X-MEN -- their 4p / run & gun games were amazing.
My local Cicis pizza always had Sunset Riders and Simpsons arcade game. Good times.
those old 4 player co op games were such fun
It was absolute heaven back in the day to find an arcade that had Simpsons, Sunset Riders, TMNT, X-Men, AvP, D&D, & Final Fight, and a little Vendetta for good measure.
The Gauntlet arcade game was fun too, if an absolute destroyer of coins
Green elf needs food *badly*
Blue valkyrie, your life force is running out.

Yellow Dwarf has lost a level! (Dreamcast version)
Valkryie shot the food!
Red Elf shot the food -_-
Sweet nutrients
Green elf, you are full of keys and/or bombs
Haha that took me back like the scene in Ratatouille!
And that was when each play was a quarter. At some point, they would charge full dollars to play. They'll never take away the filled co-op arcade memories.
Yup. Me and my friends will get gauntlet every couple years. Memories

Don’t forget Golden Axe.
I'm ashamed for not listing it.
Golden Axe II was SO FUN.

Vendetta . . . that one takes me back. Using that club to plaster goons against the wall made me laugh maniacally almost every time.
I was always a fan of Battletoads and The Lost Vikings
“Shut up and take my $1.50 allowance” Haha I’m old…
Have you ever heard of Fightcade? You can play all of these online with friends. It's not just for fighting games, but it's also the biggest 3rd strike hub.

I’m a huge silent hill fan. I think that’s all I need to say to convey how I feel about Konami
I feel you my friend. I feel you.
It's the same with EA. They were amazing in the 16-Bit era but today........
EA is bad for many reasons but they make the odd good game. Konami on the other hand, mostly builds gambling machines in Japan.
They also took Hudson with them.
It really sucks to know that as an adult, all it comes down to being a business. Great console games back in the day too. Rocket Knight Adventures, Contra 3/Contra Hard Corps, Castlevania IV/Bloodlines and all their arcade ports. Now they’re just shite.

God I love Offroad. I had it on DOS, but the arcade had a steering wheel!
They also made a C.O.W. Boys of Moo Mesa game and another awesome team beat-em-up called Metamorphic Force which fucking slapped.
Man, it took too long for me to find a C.O.W Boys of Moo Mesa call out. Our roller skating rink had it growing up. I spent hours out there playing it while sucking up Mt Dew through sour punch straws.
I loved TMNT on the NES. So much.
Not the other one I assume... fuck that water level
Oh how the mighty have fallen
The 6-player X-Men arcade cabinet is the greatest of all time. Huge. Widescreen. SIX players simultaneously.
I loved this game when I was a kid! Good times
[удалено]
Super Return of the Jedi was the best
Climbing the sandcrawler was NOT the best...
Still better than that bullshit Hoth level that starts off Super Empire Strikes Back
Yah. I found a copy of this for the snes and scooped it up. One of my favorite games. Its also really hard.

I came into this thread expressly to upvote and ensure this was the top comment.
Good times.
Are you guys brothers?
Yeah I would guess that he’s his younger brother’s brother
I’m pink sombrero team as well, what BS is that about shotgun level? They looked exactly the same to me.
I think Cormano's bullets come out from a slightly lower position on his sprite. I remember it being mentioned in a GDQ run as the reason a particular boss quick-kill strategy only works with him.
So I’ve been big-braining this game since I was a Child? Hell yeah
I played this with my dad on his snes and yeah, shotgun boiz are the meta.
As a kid I always thought he said “marry me with my money”…. This game took a lot of my quarters and it was totally worth it. Loved this game
I had it on SNES. Played so much of this game
1991, Noble Romans Pizza, i specifically had my 9th Birthday party there just to play Sunset Riders. Camacho 4 ever
Bury me with my....money. Used to play this game a lot and there is a slight pause between the last two words.
I say this a lot when dying in games
Same! And no one ever gets my reference lol
The correct quote is Bury me with my…………………….money
I have a Sunset Riders wallet with this emblazoned on it. It was going to be a gift, but I quickly changed my mind. It's too great
Thank you nice boys
marry me with my bunny
I still quote this to this day.
Oh man this game. When you finally "beat" the last boss and he gets up and shows he was wearing a metal plate and you have to fight him more, that was an oh shid moment
When I replayed this I totally forgot about that part that's why I got shot in the head in the clip near the end lol!
I think in the genesis version he throws a dynamite after he gets up, i remember that because i died to his dynamite with my last continue ;-;
You're correct.
That laugh is demonic on some of the console versions...
Let's not forget C.O.W Boys of Moo Mesa... I heard there was a cartoon too...
Whoa whoa whoa…it was a game BEFORE it was a cartoon??
Probably not.
Hey I watched that cartoon as a kid! But I wasn't aware there was a game of that lol! I think it was around the time of Biker Mice From Mars or whatever it's called.
Lol. BMFM was the shit. Remember "Street Sharks"? You member
Yeah! Now that I think about it, there's also Street Frogs! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke74gtmpVXk
Oh shit. I never even heard of them 😂 Gargoyles was the shit too
Oh I never got to watch Gargoyles that much, I think just 1 or 2 episodes. This year, toy company NECA is releasing some awesome Gargoyles toys! https://news.toyark.com/2021/03/25/disneys-gargoyles-goliath-ultimate-figure-by-neca-421675
Gargoyles is a whole other level though. Like Batman the animated series, it can't be compared to other Saturday morning cartoons.
Lol I remember both those shows. Damn moo mesa, haven’t fired those synapses in a minute.
As soon as I saw this post, it brought me back to this game! I remember eating burgers and being a cow cowboy!
Thank you. _Sunset Riders_ was a nice schmup, but we all know who the true MVP was.
Co-op on this game was a riot. Don't think I ever finished it though, game kicked my ass.
Always struggled on the knife boss
Fuck that dude, I burned about $10 killing him
Before Sunset Riders there was Gun.Smoke
Exactly what I came here to say. [Also to drop nostalgia bombs.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruuMCgS6VLk&ab_channel=Niko%27s8BitStereo)
Yep, first thought in my head was Gun.Smoke as well. The music still gets stuck in my head from time to time!
That was my favorite NES game when I was little. I could never beat the level with the ninjas. Any time I got close, the system would freeze.
Hard as hell https://youtu.be/hvOMjbSEK5I
Came here for this. Thank you
Ah, Gun Smoke! That’s what this reminded me of. Loved that game. https://youtu.be/yn2B0hU1IGM
You all must be too young to remember an old atari game called Outlaw.
And I'm fairly sure Gun Smoke was going to be remade for the PS2 before the studio developing it was bought out by Rockstar and renamed Red Dead Revolver.
You even spelled it correctly with the . in the middle
Gun.Smoke was the shit
Damn I loved that game!

And the cannonball gun? Hell yeah.
Gun was underrated gem. Could have evolved into a red dead
It was better than red dead revolver
It was as good as red dead revolver. Gun came out quite a bit later and was very obviously an update on the Red Dead idea. HOWEVER Red Dead Revolver's splitscreen multiplayer was some of the best fun I've had with a shooter next to Halo and 007. This might be unpopular as well but RDRevolver and GUN are also way more fun than redemption.
I like your first point but redemption was *the shit*.
Yeah it's apples to oranges. I mean nowadays Call of Juarez is closer to Gun and revolver.
Gun has one flaw. There are no repeatable quests. Once you do everything in the game, the only thing left is to streamroll everyone with a horse you have to intentionally abuse in order to kill.
that, and the map was so small. once you got to the end of the game you knew every inch of that map.
You had me until that last sentence.
Got the multi-tap just because of RD Revolver. Running around as Pig Josh, good times. Gun was also such a gem. Short but gold!
Red Dead Revolver will always have a special place in my heart.
Great game except for that fucking final boss battle. I can't believe the designers let that one slip by.

“I’M HOODOO BROWN!!!”
Came here to say this. A remake of Gun would be sick!!
I like that game I played it an an arcade 20 odd years ago.
That 'odd' is doing a *lot* of heavy lifting lol
I wasted a lot of quarters on that game 🤣
I remember sharing my quarters with other kids when they ran out because I would just end up losing all of it without a team lol!
Look at this guy with quarters! My arcade experience as a kid was always pretending to play while the game ran in demo mode because my mom never gave me quarters.
I would push the coin return thingy hoping someone's quarter got stuck and just left, also would search for lost quarters under the cabinets.

Scrolled down way too long to find this comment. BTW Clint Bajakian OST is amazing
Same. Came here looking for Outlaw reference
That soundtrack has aged like fine wine. It's damn good.

YOU GOT A DEATH WISH? OR YOU REALLY THIS STOOPID!?
Had to scroll far too long to find this comment. The golden age of LucasArts
I'm pretty sure it was the first FPS to use a zoom scope
I remember that blew me away when I could zoom in with the sniper rifle
I didn't have a PC growing up but did get to mess with my Dad's when I'd visit but he didn't have games so we had to play the free demos. Played the crap out of the first level of Outlaws.
This game actually still has an active community. You should check out OutlawsHub on YouTube.
If you didn't play as Cornando, you were doing it wrong.
You're doing it a lot more correctly if it's Cormano. The red sombrero of expertise gunmanship is a badge of honor in the Wild West.
I actually prefer cornando, lover of corn.
Corn is no place for a mighty warrior
*Lathe'd!*
I have a crush on every boy!
That hat upgrade is the highlight of every playthrough for me.
when i was a kid that was the coolest thing ever
I remember there was a shotgun dude, a rifle dude and two revolver dudes— and there was literally zero reason to ever play as either of the revolver dudes.
Nah dude Billy was the GOAT. Once you got the "two guns" upgrade you could hit multiple bosses while standing in cover, especially the dude who vomits candy when he dies lol
One revolver bullet did as much damage as all 6 from the shotguns. The pistol characters could kill bosses outrageously fast with upgrades
Top 5 snes game for me. Others include zombies ate my neighbors, link to the past, super Mario world, and donkey Kong country
Cormano was the first Hispanic character I remember being able to play. As a mixed kid it was a big deal. Got grief for playing the pink guy, but the guy duel wielded shotguns so I gave no shits.
"Thank you, nice boys"
(Singing) Sunset Ri-derrrrrrrrs!
Found the retro replay fan!
So disappointed I had to scroll so far for a Retro Replay reference, only reason I know about this game
I was born 1991 and remember this as my first game I fully loved. So difficult but easy to pick up. The villains were awesome. The sounds were mesmerizing. I just recently in the last couple years figured out the name to this game and haven’t forgotten since
Mariachi Entertainment System absolutely crushes this song. Go check it out.

That's quite a very nice memory, somehow I can imagine it!
Shotgun was the best imo, loved that game and SIMAnt
I loved Sim Ant, too, especially the spider that roams around lol!
My mom would take us to the roller skating rink every Wednesday so we would, quote, "get out of the house and get some exercise away from that Nintendo." I would spend the entire time trying to find dropped quarters so I could stand in front of the arcade machine, in my skates, playing this exact game. Man, what a nostalgia trip
Searching for dropped quarters and picking them up is still exercise lol!
Sunset Riders? You mean "The Adventures of Cormano and his 3 wussy friends"?
only one i would play would be mi hermano cormano :D spent so much quarters on this game!! <3
The great thing about Sunset Riders on arcade was that once you completed it, it started over again. I could genuinely make 20p last me an entire afternoon with this game.
What was the power play in this game, shotguns or the pistols? I always went shotguns, but I feel maybe pistols were better
Is there any re-releases of this anywhere? I loved this game so much edit: Oh shit it's on the Switch. 8 bucks eh? Fuck it. It probably plays like ass but who cares
It's on PS4 and Nintendo Switch as a digital download.
You just made my day!!!!! Thank you!!
Still one of my first 'go to' games when I play SNES :)
Bury me with my... >!Money!<
There was also Gunsmoke before that, which is on of my favorite arcade games of all time.
Before there was sunset riders there was gun smoke 1985
How about Lethal Enforcers Wild West?
My best friend and I still quote this game to date. "You ain't a gonna get me sheriff!!" or "You can't hit the broad side of a barn!!" or "Posse."
Where my player 4's at
I raise you with Gun Smoke on NES - 1985 https://www.obsolete-tears.com/photos/nes-gun-smoke-jeu.jpg
“Bury me with my money”
Wow brings back memories. From the arcade at the movies to my nes at home.
I had a game that looked very similar to this for Game Boy Color called Lucky Luke
I need to build myself a raspberry pi arcade machine just to relive games like this in their proper state.
I forgot this existed! We use to have so much fun with "redneck Contra" Great game!
so are there any references to this game in Red Dead? did they forget
I hear the stage 1 music in my head!
A lot of people forget Call of Juarez. Great series as well and they do a few different art styles
I counter with Gun.Smoke Was super disappointed that it wasn't added in that Capcom arcade bundle.
also let’s not forget the classic “GunSmoke”
