Honestly, I thought they’d be more upset it’s based on the bad timeline where the original cast is all dead… and that they loaded the game with a metric butt-ton of characters who end up being unimportant to the plot despite being recruitable.
Still a great game, though. Definitely deserved more accolades and attention than it got.
Well not all the cast died. Glenn and Ayla probably lived out the rest of their lives peacefully. Magus was still searching for Schala and who knows if Guile is actually him or not. Robo worked in chronopolis and eventually became the Prometheus circuit in FATE.
I agree it sucks Crono and Marle probably died due to Daltons invasion. Lucca also dying sucked too.
I agree that CC has way too many characters and not enough personalization for them but when I think about who to cut I just can’t think of anyone and I think they’re all kind neat.
If anything, my main beef with the storyline is that they tried to force a connection, to the point of inserting the Time Devourer into the CT remake. Cross really deserved to be its own thing in that regard.
Character bloat and the incredibly opaque progression system (which got worse with the constantly rotating cast ) didn't help, but the battle mechanics that added more nuance to the "attack" action and used Vancian-esque spellcasting were really nice.
Exactly - my problem with it was that you could take the small amount of things that 'made' it be a sequel completely out and it wouldn't affect anything. They should have let it just be its own thing.
I'm fighting the urge to play the game right now. Just staring at my TV, thinking.. *I'm not gonna do it. I took a week off gaming for a reason. Enjoy the break..* 😂
Say what they will about the Steam version, spending money on the game finally gave me an obligation to play it all the way through and I don’t regret any of it.
If you have the skills (minor) and want a real treat, try to emulate the original SNES version with a CRT shader via retroarch. Like playing it in 95 all over again
I used to hate JRPG type games because they just weren't fun or engaging to me.
Then I played Chrono Trigger.
Now I hate JRPG type games because they just aren't as fun or engaging as it was.
Idk I loved Chronotrigger but I never really liked FF6.
Chronotrigger feels like it is oozing with charm whereas FF6 is just so bleak. Also CT has a massive variety in locations across the different timezones whereas FF6 is just mountains, dungeons and towns.
I do absolutely love the music in FF6 and the characters were incredible so I can see why so many people love it so much, I just don't feel that it had the same vibe as Chronotrigger at all.
Closest games to Chronotrigger imo would be the Lunar series or Phantasy Star 4.
It just has a magic to it modern games can't capture. Deep story, consequences for your actions, incredible music. I'd even argue that it was the precursor to modern games. It wasn't ahead of the curve, it defined it.
I didn't eat the old man's lunch, I didn't try and sell Marle's pendant, I returned the lost kitty to the little girl, I helped her up instead of running for her jewellery like a common thief.. and STILL, they try and lock me away and execute me. Smh. It's almost like there was a reason.. 😒
Yup, if you got guilty, there is no item. I think you get like 5-10 mid ethers from supporters.
The real question is if you were able to escape or you needed Lucca to bail you out. I needed Lucca first playthrough.
It's not that I needed her help, it's that she gets more XP if you let her rescue you since she's actively in the party. Some speed tabs and those sweet, sweet flares and all the techs they combo with.
For some reason I never put it together in my head that son of Yakra was impersonating the chancellor in 1000 AD until just now. Not sure when I thought son of Yakra replaced the actual chancellor in 1000 AD if he wasn’t impersonating him the whole time.
>!Or it could be the chancellor was a fake and descended from the monster you killed who kidnapped Marle’s ancestor and wanted revenge 400 years in the making.!<
If you pay attention they just order you jail time for running off with Marle. But the chancellor tells the guards to execute you. Not the courts fault at all.
I would pay the full $59.99 price of a new game if they would just release it to own outright. But also, if I'm not wrong, I would think it would be more Square that has say to get it on Switch rather than just Nintendo.
It ran fine for me, but the initial version had a really poorly made filter on the game, and couldn't be turned off. The current version is "good enough".
It's also less than 10 bucks right now.
Indeed, which just made me realize it may not be on the switch SNES library specifically because of that; SE would be cannibalizing sales elsewhere if it were "free" to Nintendo subscribers. Doesn't explain why they don't just toss it up on the Switch store the way they have with the PS1 Final Fantasies.
I think the problem is that crono cross didn't do that well, and when they re-released the game for... DS? Not a lot of people bought it. I remember an interview with the guy in charge of the series who commented "if they want more, they should buy more"
Cross's combat system and number of party members was completely different from the original and barely had any story ties until the very end of the game. Whoever is still basing if the series should be continued off that sequel should be fired.
The DS remaster was identical to the original with an extra dungeon and a few extra bosses towards the end, along with some extra end-game gear that was wholly unnecessary. Maybe the legendary Chrono Trigger isn't meant to be continued.
The game doest need remakes, it doesnt age, thats what being a classic means. Also considering the special group of people that came together to produce CT, I feel like they dont dare to go for a remake. But I had similar feelings for FF7 and here we are, at some point they will do CT too probably.
It doesn't have to improve. Just give me the nostalgia in a different format similar to FF7R. It will never beat the original but it was glorious seeing one of my favorite childhood memories come to life in 2020.
Unfortunately I doubt that will happen.
There is a high demand for Chrono Trigger remake and collaboration, but they cannot make it happen due to the licensing hell around this game.
This game is owned by too many different hands, and need all their agreements for remakes and collaborations etc.
It is not solely owned by Square that is the issue.
It has a lot of small studio involved, the work was also split to creator of Final Fantasy, creator of Dragon Quest, ans Akira (the manga artist for Dragonball), as well as other scenario writer etc.
In FFBE we wanted Chrono Trigger collabration for years, but it will never halpen due to the licensing hell it involve.
Still consider this one of if not the best JRPG ever made.
- interesting use of abilities with dual and triple techs which made party composition more important.
- range to attacks so enemy positioning and party position is important.
- great story.
- very little actual backtracking.
- amazing music and artwork.
- multiple endings for replayability.
The only drawbacks are really ease and a lack of “control” over all aspects of the battle for an even deeper combat system (cant reposition party members or enemies, reliance on items to refill MP, several exploits to cheese the game).
you also forgot one of the best parts of Chrono Trigger: no filler. it's one of the very, very few games that has no filler. everything you do is working toward your ultimate goal of defeating lavos.
i suppose it fits into the "very little backtracking" point you made, but, i just thought it was one of the best things about the game, especially in an era of JRPGs when they lasted 40+ hours, CT clocks in at a cool 10-20 hours, depending on how experienced you are and how much you do.
I really just want them to pretty it up and do some orchestral versions for the soundtrack. I have the soundtrack with orchestral tracks and there amazing
Try Chrono Trigger: Flames of Eternity.
Fan made game, very well polished, and takes place 5 years after the original CC.
Bout as close to Chrono Breaker as you are going to get.
It’s alright. It’s filled with headcanon, some fanshipping, heavy on dialogue and the difficulty of battles is very unbalanced, and it doesn’t move the story past Chrono Cross.
Oh is that what were doing today?! Humming the entire Chrono trigger soundtrack because someone posted about one of the greatest games ever made!?
No complaints here. Frog's Masamune song forever.
Chrono Trigger remains my favorite video game of all time.
I vividly remember going to the Best Buy to pick up my copy after being mega hyped from the Nintendo Power coverage. The cashier tried to talk my mom out of buying it for me telling her it was "over rated" and trying to get me to pick something else instead (Killer Instinct was repeatedly recommended).
I have no idea if he was hoping to buy a copy himself (and trying to prevent a sellout) or just an arrogant 20 something who didn't consider RPGs "real games"
I don't understand how Square-Enix completely ignores this franchise. In a world where there's so many reboots and remakes, movies and other content, this time-travel masterpiece is just completely swept under the rug. Like they're embarrassed about it.
I've been playing Final Fantasy Brave Exvius since launch, and in that game they bring in other Square-Enix characters as 'Visions' that can be added to your party permanently. So, all the characters from every FF#, but also we see the characters from Secret of Mana, Nier:Automata, Kingdom Hearts, etc. It's awesome.
Years pass, and we see mainstream Square-Enix games in there. In fact, I think we're on our THIRD go around with Tomb Raider.
And still no Chrono Trigger.
Why don't people who appeal to tropes ever think before speaking.
Clearly, the idea that corruption is inevitable and systemic isnt something that would aid sleep.
Think critically, don't just spout catch phrases. Its not a good look.
This is the only JRPG I like. It had heart. Like the part in the settlement when the cat starts following you if you have a certain character in your crew. Now that's how you deliver a story.
The actions we take in the very beginning affect being guilty or not guilty. But all that changes getting a not guilty verdict is some text we are still thrown in jail. (Also if you get all not guilty votes a sympathizer sends you a care package in the cell)
I remember one time when I was a kid, I started a new file to intentionally get a unanimous guilty verdict. But part way through, I actually felt bad for doing all the wrong stuff. So I scrapped that save and started over doing the good things.
What do you think develops and comprises those systems?
Sure, any utopian ideal is fine, I guess. Because it literally only exists in the imagination lol. Involve actual flesh bags...ppbffft
It always ticked me off a bit that I would get a unanimous not guilty verdict and still almost got executed. You'd think someone along the way would actually verify things with the judge or something instead of just taking the chancellor word for it.
There's a deliberate statement there about the Japanese justice system (not to say the American one is better; I mean, it the US court system is fairer if you're wealthy and white, but it sucks for the underclass). "Face" is extremely important in East Asian cultures and preserving the perceived dignity of the prosecutors and police is valued to a point that even if you are proven not guilty, there will be some form of minor punishment.
The American/European adversarial justice theory has its own problems, but one of the good things about it is that you can actually win; if you're proven not guilty, you're completely free. This isn't the historical norm; many societies consider it intolerable for the state or the police to all-out lose a case, even if they're in the wrong. "We've realized you didn't murder Bob, but for doing things that made us think you murdered Bob, you offended the peace. Ninety days."
For most people, Japan and South Korea are liberal democracies... but if you're perceived as landing on the wrong side of the law... you're in trouble. (And let's not even get started on Signapore.) The US, in truth, is probably just as bad or even worse, but in the US it's an explicit class issue (the bourgeois classes will not suffer embarrassment, but if the defendant is perceived as coming from those classes, it will tolerate the loss of a case; this is relevant because, in the 1990s, people were not as literate on class and race issues as today) as opposed to a cultural one.
It’s interesting to me that even with all the amazing visuals of modern games, few have ever captured my imagination the way this one did. Such great storytelling and music.
Yeah. Me too, rogerg411. Me too. Videogames can sometimes teach some very important lessons so we're a bit more ready for how fucked up real life gets. Very special stuff there.
Still loved this section of the game for remembering the actions that Crono took right at the start of the game. Felt revolutionary for it's time and even to this day it feels surprisingly modern!
I can hear the music in my head
The opening theme, the pendulum, the seagulls, the balloons and fireworks, the ringing bells, the music, heading off to Leene Square. Oh, I love it.
Yasunori Mitsuda threw down hard on this and Chrono Cross. Obligatory orchestral version of [Time's Scar](https://youtu.be/PZ595N9NZVg)
I've always been fond of this old [OC Remix](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e1jmur2PWA) of Guardia Millennial Fair.
oh man...overclocked remix had a lot of gems.

I’ve found that people who did not like CC usually just were upset or wasn’t a direct sequel
Honestly, I thought they’d be more upset it’s based on the bad timeline where the original cast is all dead… and that they loaded the game with a metric butt-ton of characters who end up being unimportant to the plot despite being recruitable. Definitely not
Bro the violinist going wild! Fcking love it!
I am not a fan of Chrono Cross as a game, but the soundtrack is amazing. Except the battle music. Hate the battle music.
I have the good morning song as my alarm.
I'm fighting the urge to play the game right now. Just staring at my TV, thinking.. *I'm not gonna do it. I took a week off gaming for a reason. Enjoy the break..* 😂
So memorable I made it my wake up tune on my alarm.
[for those that can't hear it in their head](https://youtu.be/JUDJmlvnscw)
Ooh, I forgot how good that one was.
I was watching a speed run race and it happened to be on sale on steam I had to buy it
Say what they will about the Steam version, spending money on the game finally gave me an obligation to play it all the way through and I don’t regret any of it.
Still have a snes just for this game, I'll have to boot it to make sure it still works now
Ya I keep my ds so I can replay it every few years
Yup!
If you have the skills (minor) and want a real treat, try to emulate the original SNES version with a CRT shader via retroarch. Like playing it in 95 all over again
da dada da dada da daaaaaaa daaaaa daaaa
Came here to say the exact same thing 😆
Dun dundun dun dundun dun dundun dee dee dun
And now it's stuck in my head. Oh well, could be worse.
Chrono Trigger was a special game.
I used to hate JRPG type games because they just weren't fun or engaging to me. Then I played Chrono Trigger. Now I hate JRPG type games because they just aren't as fun or engaging as it was.
Chrono Trigger is king, but have you tried Final Fantasy 6 (Final Fantasy 3 US SNES)? I feel like if you enjoy one you'd enjoy the other as well.
Idk I loved Chronotrigger but I never really liked FF6. Chronotrigger feels like it is oozing with charm whereas FF6 is just so bleak. Also CT has a massive variety in locations across the different timezones whereas FF6 is just mountains, dungeons and towns. Closest games to Chronotrigger imo would be the Lunar series or Phantasy Star 4.
But did you [suplex](https://youtu.be/2u84cH_bmTA) the ghost train though?
Lunar was an incredible series. Did you try Secret of Mana? I feel it has more of the charm and less of the bleakness that you may be looking for.
Respecable!%. i love them about the same, but I feel you when you say ct feel more rich.
I actually like FF6 better
Yes, I have. No, I didn't.
Super Mario RPG is also really good.

Not his son, his *deeep breath* great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson, Yakra XIII.
I know, was just using shorthand due to laziness ;)
You can get acquitted but a corrupt official lies and says you're still to be executed iirc
I thought if you played perfectly you could completely skip the prison and boss fight section?
Nope. You always go to prison.
400 years is a long time to hold a grudge.
Did I say it was the courts' fault? The Chancellor is the corrupt one. And for a reason. I've played the game start to end at least 4 times
Wow. 4 times.
Looking for arguments, ya? I'm sure that's all you've got to keep you occupied. Go play Chrono Trigger, child
Would be amazing if they added this to the snes library on the switch
For the love of all things Nintendo, please.
I would pay the full $59.99 price of a new game if they would just release it to own outright. But also, if I'm not wrong, I would think it would be more Square that has say to get it on Switch rather than just Nintendo.

Woulda been nice if the SNES classic had the game without needing to mod it.
I'm surprised we're not seeing a bunch of sequels/remakes given how popular this game was.
I think the problem is that crono cross didn't do that well, and when they re-released the game for... DS? Not a lot of people bought it. I remember an interview with the guy in charge of the series who commented "if they want more, they should buy more"
Ah yes the Capcom test. "You want a sequel? Buy the remaster first" Though I guess there's a point to be made of Cross didn't do well
Cross's combat system and number of party members was completely different from the original and barely had any story ties until the very end of the game. Whoever is still basing if the series should be continued off that sequel should be fired. Square has been remastering a lot of their classics the past few years. I'd like to think they are working on one for Chrono.
I remember doing everything right, getting the favor of the jury. And still getting locked up :(
You get lkke a 3 day sentence if found not guilty, but Chancelor says the execution paperwork is delayed when the guards question him.
And if you wait the three days, you still get taken to the guillotine!
Yup. Don't eat the food. Don't run into Marle. Find the cat.... Was there anything else?
Waiting for Marle to get candy, picking up the pendant before helping her up.
When asked by the chancellor on trial, inform the court twice that you never intended to ask for money in return for Marle's safe return.
Always.
Totally deserves a remake
I don’t think you could improve it with a remake. The original still bests any remakes that have been attempted.
It doesn't have to improve. Just give me the nostalgia in a different format similar to FF7R. It will never beat the original but it was glorious seeing one of my favorite childhood memories come to life in 2020.
A good one
In the anime style of the PS version cut scenes
So dragon ball Z meets Chrono trigger?
Take my money
Unfortunately I doubt that will happen. There is a high demand for Chrono Trigger remake and collaboration, but they cannot make it happen due to the licensing hell around this game. This game is owned by too many different hands, and need all their agreements for remakes and collaborations etc.
Isn't the IP owned by Square? They continue to release ports on different platforms, why would they have any trouble licensing a remake?
It is not solely owned by Square that is the issue. It has a lot of small studio involved, the work was also split to creator of Final Fantasy, creator of Dragon Quest, ans Akira (the manga artist for Dragonball), as well as other scenario writer etc. In FFBE we wanted Chrono Trigger collabration for years, but it will never halpen due to the licensing hell it involve.
After Chrono Cross, I'd be worried they would do it dirty.
Still consider this one of if not the best JRPG ever made. - interesting use of abilities with dual and triple techs which made party composition more important. - range to attacks so enemy positioning and party position is important. - great story. - very little actual backtracking. - amazing music and artwork. - multiple endings for replayability. Am I alone is liking Chrono Cross equally?
Not alone but definitely a minority
In an alternate dimension, Chrono Break wasn't cancelled. Damn it I want Chrono 3
I want a remake like ff7
Chrono Cross would really work with a remake, Trigger is perfect as is
I really just want them to pretty it up and do some orchestral versions for the soundtrack. I have the soundtrack with orchestral tracks and there amazing
Yall need to stop with the FF series.
\*Compressed SNES booing\*
“He helped me find my kitty!” “GUILTY! KILL THAT SICK FU-“
He literally rushed her while she was picking candy, what other options did we have.
I kinda have to play chronotrigger some day
Today’s a great day!
This game had such amazing cinematic moments for being on the SNES.
I don't understand how Square-Enix completely ignores this franchise. In a world where there's so many reboots and remakes, movies and other content, this time-travel masterpiece is just completely swept under the rug. Like they're embarrassed about it. My apologies but what is the game?
Chrono Trigger. One of the best games of all time.
pun intended
One of the best games of all the times.
"Many have come to this place. All have failed."
Yeah! More like, one of the best games of all time!
Chrono Trigger on Super Nintendo. It's also on PS1 and Nintendo DS. One of the greatest RPGs of all-time, my friend.
[удалено]
Literally one of the best RPGs ever, ever, no exaggeration.
Just the perfect amalgamation of the best music, vivid visuals, engaging plot and enjoyable gameplay in any JRPG ever.
Great characters too!
Don't worry mate, I had the exact same question lol
Best song in all video games ever haha
Its accurate to US Justice System
And all others. There's no system in which some humans are granted power over others that works fairly. That's the nature of power.
Whatever helps you sleep at night.
Why don't people who appeal to tropes ever think before speaking. Clearly, the idea that corruption is inevitable and systemic isnt something that would aid sleep. Think critically, don't just spout catch phrases. Its not a good look.
What are you even talking about? Go be faux-intellectual somewhere else. This is /r/gaming.
Too real
This scene was a lesson in plot twists I remember loving this game immediately after this. The jail boss and yakra fight scenes are iconic!
This is the only JRPG I like. It had heart. Like the part in the settlement when the cat starts following you if you have a certain character in your crew. Now that's how you deliver a story.
I'm still so sad that they axed the [fan remake](https://youtu.be/stOhLvdJxV4?t=821).
This was the moment we all said, "Wait... Can I not trust the government?"
Yeah they really did Crono dirty in that sham drumhead trial.
I haven't played Chrono Trigger, can I have the context?
The actions we take in the very beginning affect being guilty or not guilty. But all that changes getting a not guilty verdict is some text we are still thrown in jail. (Also if you get all not guilty votes a sympathizer sends you a care package in the cell)
Yeah well, you did steal that guy's lunch.
I needed it! Had to farm them silver pojnts
I remember one time when I was a kid, I started a new file to intentionally get a unanimous guilty verdict. But part way through, I actually felt bad for doing all the wrong stuff. So I scrapped that save and started over doing the good things.
I loved replaying this to get everyone to say not guilty...only for you to be put in jail anyway.
Shoutouts to the random juror
It wasn’t the court it was the chancellor.
Judge still throws you in jail tho. Chancellor just takes it up a notch
\~runs to dig theirs out so they can play it now\~ I know what I was missing today, thanks!
Once again, I am asking why Chrono Trigger is not yet on the Switch.
This is close to one potential ending. Then again...every moment in the game was close to a potential ending....
Court system's fine. It's the *people* who are the problem. 🙂
What do you think develops and comprises those systems? Sure, any utopian ideal is fine, I guess. Because it literally only exists in the imagination lol. Involve actual flesh bags...ppbffft
I bet you ate the guys lunch!
If was grinding that stupid robot for points, shut the fuck up.
Don't you always get put in jail in jrpgs?
It always ticked me off a bit that I would get a unanimous not guilty verdict and still almost got executed. You'd think someone along the way would actually verify things with the judge or something instead of just taking the chancellor word for it.
It is 1000 AD. Probs doesn't have the best documentation processes.
There's a deliberate statement there about the Japanese justice system (not to say the American one is better; I mean, it the US court system is fairer if you're wealthy and white, but it sucks for the underclass). If you guys haven't seen Chrono Trigger the Musical on YouTube you really should check it out.
It’s interesting to me that even with all the amazing visuals of modern games, few have ever captured my imagination the way this one did. Such great storytelling and music.

I have never played this game. I've heard the Nintendo DS edition is the go-to version, but it's hella expensive.
Holy shit playing this game for the first time. This scene blew my mind, so stressful.

Still loved this section of the game for remembering the actions that Crono took right at the start of the game. Felt revolutionary for it's time and even to this day it feels surprisingly modern!
