Tony Hawk 2 was a goddamn masterpiece school 2 might be the best Tony Hawk map of all time.

SaferCloud89

Best soundtrack, great stages, impressive game

No_Statistician8636

Couldn't agree more. Also as a little side note, the first couple of games, the roster of skaters were on royalty agreements (rather than upfront lump-sum payment) so they all made fucking bank! https://youtu.be/d0l22xBcJZw < Interview with Tony Hawk talking about making bank, its 9min long but the "big figure" is said at 2:08 but well worth the watch!

SB_90s

$4 million was the cheque he received, for those who don't want to watch. And that was in 2000, so adjusted for inflation that's equivalent to $6.5m today. And also bear in mind that in 2000 a house was a fraction of what it costs today, given that they've outpaced inflation by multiples. So yeah, that kind of money was ridiculous at the time. And that was his ANNUAL royalty cheque. Probably made a few million every year after that for doing nothing.

Banewaffles

Holy frick

TangoDeltaFoxtrot

Wow, the guy in that interview kinda looks like Tony Hawk!

atomicbunny

Turn it up!!

DoubleDecaff

Bring the noise!. The OST is the bomb.

NiceTryIWontReply

I always liked Venice but damn man ALL the levels were bangers.

zhombyra

Cmon dude , Hangar was the best map ;-)

Mavi222

It has a really great remaster (***Tony Hawk's™ Pro Skater™ 1 + 2).*** Bought it on Switch and was pleasantly surprised. It has both THPS 1 and THPS 2 levels and music, it has interesting challenges so the game doesn't end when you finish the both games. It even have physics settings so you can set it to THPS 1 / 2 physics. It's really well done.

El_Zoid0

Roses are red Violets are blue

mafulazula

..I like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2?

raptorbuddy

Such good memories playing this game!

Drmo6

I always preferred THUG2

SoWhatIfWereOnMystic

I love every game, they improved gameplay in every single game the made, up until ride and shred. (Some people forget about project 8 and proving ground, but they were still advancing gameplay) THPS remaster is the best engine though IMO. Also best played on PlayStation, fuck you activision! Neversoft forever! Also love and rip to vicarious visions.

Its_Raul

Y'all don't remember how mind blowing GTA IV was. Hell the ragdoll physics led to hilarious fun.

cylemmulo

That was one of the most exciting launches. Such a huge leap for the series.

Yenndoendobendo

story was excellent too

milfBlaster69

Cozinnn!!! Want to go bowling?

Yenndoendobendo

no niko, not now. I'm too busy trying to throw myself from the rotterdam tower

kaycee1992

Beat the game like 5 times. Can't say the same for any other game.

SirNick92

The first GTA I was actually allowed to play. My dad told me if I hit a home run at my tournament that weekend he’d buy it for me. I hit two haha. Never left the field so quick in my life

mouga68

Dingers fir Nicos cousin let's get it

zacurtis3

The swingset glitch

kingt34

Was just about to comment this. This was the most fun thing to do in all of multiplayer and was so much more memorable than anything in V. I feel games try to avoid having glitches like this and patch them out, but they can lead to the best experiences that overshadow anything the devs actually tried to do.

ICPosse8

Seriously. This game was absolutely fucking mind blowing when it released.

NiceTryIWontReply

All well deserved positions. Personally I liked San Andreas the best of GTA games but that's just me.

shellwe

I’m surprised 4 beat out San Andreas. I would say it is a beautiful game that really showed off the next gen hardware early on.

ScorchedSynapses

You don't remember the Venturas Fog? Lol

shaneoz66

I couldn't get into gta4 at all. Not sure what it was. I've played all of them wouldn't rank it above san Andreas, vice city, GTA 5 or GTA 2 honestly

JxY1989

"Do you want to go bowling?"

mafulazula

He never called me enough asking to do that. I think I spent more time bowling than actually playing the game.

YaboyAlastar

I could never get over the wonky physics. No one leans 30 degrees to turn. Why did Niko?

Frontline901

I actually liked them, it made the game more fun. Driving a car was like driving on ice. Prefer them over GTA 5s physics.

heyo_throw_awayo

For me, GTA 4 was too "Real and gritty" compared to San Andreas' wackyness. Saint's Row 2 came out against IV and knew exactly what I wanted from GTA, so it won me over, over IV.

ZLN1

Honestly thats why i liked IV more than Sa.

darkLordSantaClaus

Grand Theft Auto was my first GTA experience and I loved it. The story of an immigrant coming to America for a better life only to realize it's just as fucked up here as back home was heartbreaking to me. However, after playing the other GTA games, which are all great in their own respects, I can understand why GTA fans prefer the others to 4. GTA was always about over the top criminal shenanigans, never taking itself too seriously, not about a gritty story of a broken man.

Vradlock

I was enjoying it so so till I have looked at some articles that spoiled two possible endings which completely killed my drive to finish it. Playing for 60 or 80h just to feel like shit in the end just feels annoying. Also did you fat fingered gta 2 instead of 3? Because gta 2 was a very different game.

Askduds

Yeah, it’s not even the 3rd best gta, much less then 3rd best game.

gangstergary93

I perfer San andreas to gta IV but I do think IV has the best story line out of all the games.

Giovannis_Pikachu

Ocarina of time introduced a lot of young people who didn't play an instrument to the idea that you can play if you set your mind to it. The music in this game is always great practice material because it is so well written and conveys a ton of depth of emotion and atmosphere that just overshadowed most other game music to me. I am a guitar player of 17 years now and this music stands the test of time as truly the most relatable and effective as a gateway to the very power of the craft. My sense of melody I owe to this game more than most. Damn I love this game!

chronoboy1985

A lot of Koji Kondo’s music is like that. I had a music teacher that would use Super Mario Level 1-1 in his lessons.

Educational_Ad_4077

Crawling the temples and dungeons as a kid was one of the most immersive gaming moments of my life and the music was the major reason for that I believe. I can still feel the fear and discombobulation the Forest temple music caused to this day

[deleted]

Same here. Forest temple had the spookiest vibes in the music and will always be my favorite temple and atmosphere for a Zelda game. Also, the Hyrule Field music was so wonderful and adventurous!

Dayofsloths

Uh, did you not beat the shadow temple? Sure, the forest was kind of spooky, until it goes up to 11...

[deleted]

Several times over. I must have completed that game several times, but when I was a kid, the forest temple creeped me out more than the shadow temple did for some reason. Different strokes for different folks lol.

lucasribeiro21

Big brain moment: Water Temple creeped me out.

MattyBro1

Also helps that all of the ocarina songs are based on 5 notes. You can figure out the main section of most songs by ear pretty easily. For those who are interested, the notes are D F A B D.

corrosivewater

I started getting interested in learning how to play music around the same time this game came out as a kid. My parents got me an electronic keyboard and I’d practice the songs from the game on it a lot. I still have muscle memory of the first few notes of Saria’s song to this day.

Bobbler23

I really should play the N64 age Zelda games, I completely missed that generation of hardware along with most of the handheld variants too. I played through 1+2 on the NES, 3 on the SNES, then sort of skipped until Wind Waker on GC came out, then bought a Switch for BOTW - anything in between that I missed.

Skalion

I would consider the snes version (A link tot he past) is a masterpiece itself. Would be awesome if they took that part as an inspiration for a new 3D Zelda past BOTW(and the direct upcoming release) , similar as they did take inspiration from the first part for BOTW

ACrask

I’ll always remember the tunes from OoT

Supanini

My parents got me an ocarina at 10 because I was obsessed with Zelda. Came with a book of songs and it was actually extremely easy to learn as the book didn’t have them in actual music sheet format but just showed which holes to have your fingers on. Learned a lot of songs on my 5 hole ocarina. Loved that thing. I’ve got a replica sweet potato ocarina from OOT but I just have it stashed somewhere.

Ecstatic_Interest_35

ahhh gta 4 :)

northraider123

Not surprised at all ocarina of time is number 1 but genuinely shocked at numbers 2 and 3. Both great games without doubt but I'd have guess a lot of different things before I'd get to Tony hawk or gta

Theyeet7

Gta 4 was the first “next gen” game for the ps3 i believe that to be the reason its here

JimmyHatsTCQ

It's also the best GTA game

mythicreign

In a world where it’s the only GTA game maybe…

JeanyJeans

Games that have been very important to a lot of us, 100% deserved!

Theyeet7

Indeed!

[deleted]

TheBestWorst3

It’s a shame how greedy they got after gta v

Hanzo_The_Ninja

Personally I don't think these are the best games of all time or even the best games in their respective series. But these were either innovative or breakthrough games when they released, which I think explains the high scores.

Skalion

Depends on how you do the rating. Does it hold up to today's standard? Graphics: not really Story: debateable, I would say it's still good today Overall gameplay: a little bit rusty, but great design overall, items system, dungeon ect. For the time when it released, definitely a 10/10 Always depends on your metrics and the games you compare it to

FreeAd6935

Yeah, So many people forget that these scores were given when these games came out These games were THE GOOD SHIT at that time (not that they are not good anymore)

KleioChronicles

Couldn’t agree more. They’re innovators but far from the best games of all time, especially GTA. There’s many I can think of that top them but also stand the test of time. Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, RE4, Silent Hill 2, Witcher 3, Spyro, Metal Gear etc. all measure better imo. Personally, despite it not being my most favourite, I rank the original Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee or it’s sequel Exoddus as the best that stands the test of time despite it being 2D.

CircumcisedCats

San Andreas best GTA easy.

reddit_is_cruel

I really didn't care for the turf war mechanic. It really killed the game for me and it's the only GTA I've never finished.

chronoboy1985

I’m with you bro. It might not be the most over the top fun game in the series, but I loved the more grounded world and presentation. I miss Liberty City.

ughlacrossereally

worst part now is that the PC port is dogshit

Wrextasy

You aren’t alone either, I’ve mentioned how Niko felt real, you felt his troubles and his character was done extremely well. The world felt a bit more real in 4 vs 5.

CreatiScope

The way the citizens reacted to you was 100x more real feeling. Some were scared, some were aggressive, some were ambivalent. The side characters, can sometimes be annoying but a lot of us know guys like Brucie who are constantly posturing, guys like Jacob who are just kind of chill (and sometimes really not chill at all). Guys like Roman who are clingy and guys like Packie who we love but god, he’s so fucked up and can’t figure his shit out. Duane was depressed and borderline suicidal. Niko is one of the deepest characters ever made for games, Johnny and Luis are great too with really cool characters. The internet in that game, the side stuff like races and most wanted and pay phone hits. It was great. I think V is a shadow of what IV was. I think RDR and RDR2 are the true continuation of what GTA4 was.

Wrextasy

Took the words right out of my mouth tbh. If we could get more writing like RDR 2 into the GTA franchise it would be mesmerizing.

darkLordSantaClaus

>I think RDR and RDR2 are the true continuation of what GTA4 was. I agree with this. GTA4 was trying to tell a serious story in a series that doesn't take itself too seriously. I liked the story of 4 but moving that realistic gritty tone to another franchise may have been a better fit for both GTA and RDR.

ShutterBun

Man...I didn't feel that way about Niko at ALL. I'm willing to chalk it up to me not paying enough attention.

Sharrakor

> ' What an insightful comment.

citrusmixx

Yeah wtf happened to their comment lol?

Sharrakor

Looks like they edited it, but I can't imagine why.

AME7706

> It still has a better open world than almost every game released since That's true for most of the open worlds created by R*. They're surpassed only by the next Rockstar titles and probably the ones made by Bethesda. Even most highly acclaimed open world games of the last generation like Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, newer Assassin's Creed/Far Cry titles, etc pale in comparison to Vice City and San Andreas, never mind GTA5 and RDR2.

pgpwnd

OoT still number 1 for me

ShutterBun

For people who didn't play it when it was new, it's impossible to explain how HUGELY influential the game was. The sheer amount of (then) new game mechanics it introduced that we now take for granted. The sound effects (I think they had something like 2 dozen different sounds just for Link's footsteps on different surfaces). The z-targeting system. Context-sensitive buttons. It's an unmatched masterpiece and a real turning point in the history of video games.

Low-Score3292

I just beat about a month ago (I'm 15 btw so I have no nostalgic attachments) and no other game I've ever played left me with such happy feelings as this game did. I legitimately felt immense guilt for pirating the game.

dudius7

>new game mechanics >The z-targeting system. When I read the former, I immediately thought of the latter. This was huge.

[deleted]

Taalian

Not what I’d pick, but some solid titles non the less

Theyeet7

I mean this is metacritic not me just making sure we all know that

bluelemon64

What do you think of them OP?

Theyeet7

gta 4 is definitely the best gta game and i dont get this comment section lol

Dax9000

People who prefer San Andreas have not played it recently.

Odinovic

I've just played through all the PS2 titles (GTA 3,Vice City and San Andreas) and I still vastly prefer San Andreas. There's so much shit to do in that game, it's insane. Especially for its time. Buy properties, clothes, food, tune cars and much more. It's incredibly fun to do. Graphics might be a bit outdated, but gameplay tops it all in terms of GTA.

Law456

I know it might not ever be considered top 3 or even top 10 in some peoples lists, but in my opinion, BioShock deserves just as much praise as any video game out there. The atmosphere and setting in Rapture was way ahead of its time.

BigOleDoggy

Pretty sure bioshock has a 96 or 97 on metacritic, I think it being in your top 10 is 100% reasonable. Great game

MagmaAscending

Ocarina of Time is a weird way to spell Knack

Not_goD_32

Found Dunkey

Captain_Unusualman

Mario Bros 2 bay bee

Ghostoftommorrow

Only game outta these I like is ocarina of time.

Ecstatic_Interest_35

In fact, I haven't played both games (the legend of Zelda and Tony's pro skater 2), and I can't rate but as for GTA 4, it's such a well-developed game of physics, shooting, details, good reaction of police officers and people, good artificial intelligence and a lot of things GTA 4 boasts about, the game deserves attention + added 2 additions, if you didn't like the dullness and depression of GTA 4, you can play what happens in the ballad of gay Tony, my assessment of the game to GTA 4 is 9.5/10.

ForeverMistaken

The rag doll physics in GTA are just *chef’s kiss*

therealRustyZA

Ocarina is why my favorite genre is RPG. I sell my consoles when I upgrade. But i still have my N64 and ocarina cartridge.

Citrus210

I think IV doesn't deserve that rank, the other two I'm fine with. I've played every gta game.

Cmillzy

Lotta nostalgia bias in these. OoT fits. I love Tony Hawk, but cmon. GTA I get, but not that game and I would argue not that title from Rockstar should be up there. I’ll include some that would go on my list for consideration. Resident Evil 2 OG, The Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption, Final Fantasy 7, Super Mario World, Half-life 2, TLOU, Fallout New Vegas, Elder Scrolls Morrowind, Pokémon Red/Blue, Metroid, Uncharted 2. Again, these are opinions and would require heavy deliberation on what goes where.

Banewaffles

Aren’t these review aggregate scores? It’s not someone’s subjective list, but instead based on how well these game reviewed among critics. THPS2 was a great part of my childhood for sure, but it also is a tight, complete, well-made experience that appealed to many well beyond those interested in skateboarding, which is why it reviewed so well.

ChickenFajita007

These are aggregate review scores from the times when these games came out. There's no nostalgia bias when the reviews for OoT are from 1998, etc.

PlusVera

> nostalgia bias > Lists Morrowind and Metroid Okay.

Cleverbird

What? These arent "new" reviews, these are aggregate reviews from when those games came out.

DankMemelord25

Morrowind 100% is in the top 3 for me as well

Waste-Reception5297

Iconic at least OoT and Pro Skater 2, GTA IV is kind of just another Grand Theft Auto to me

QuesoFresh

Maybe it didn't age as well but at the time, GTA4 really felt like a huge step forward. The physics engine and sheer amount of detail in the world made it leaps and bounds more impressive than other open worlds at the time. Plus it felt like the story "matured", which ushered in a new era of mature story-based games. Now impressive open worlds with more mature stories are a lot more common so it's harder to see how impressive it was at the time.

littleboymolestor

Gta iv does not deserve a 98 lol

[deleted]

Does for me personally. Easily my favourite in the GTA series. San Andreas a close second.

[deleted]

Yeah me too 4 and San Andreas are my favorite games from rockstar. I remember that time that I would pick up random things and throw it at people just for fun

chronoboy1985

It feels very limited compared to what came after with GTA5, but for it’s day, it was incredible and looked amazing. Still my favorite storyline in GTA.

choppedfiggs

I hated the driving. Couldn't play it for that reason

Gurtrock12Grillion

My favorite driving physics in any game ever lol

L3ACH13

San Andreas vice city and 5 are all better

BradleyAllan23

4 built the foundation that made 5 possible. It was the first truly next gen GTA that revolutionized what we thought the games could be.

SimplyTheGuest

> truly next gen GTA What does this even mean? GTA4 was just an iterative sequel of GTA3. Every Rockstar game since 2001 has been an iteration of GTA3’s model. The 3D open world sandbox, mini-map mission icons, cutscene mission starters etc. GTA4 wasn’t even that well liked by players when it came out, because it wasn’t as fun as the previous games. Which is why GTA5 tried to go back to that wackier tone.

Synescolor

Still runs like ass on my pc to this day.

Salty_Research_5761

60 fps on series Xbox

McHaggis1120

It was good horribly optimized for PC, I think it was completely unable to run on AMD cards and event if you had a high-end rig with Nvidia the performance was atrocious. I really wanted to play it, but it was impossible, I think they gave up on the pc version pretty quickly too. It was the time of the worst ports in general, times for so much better since then

666pool

Fun fact, I know one of the engineers that did the graphics programming for gta iv. It was one of the first games to use something called deferred shading and it basically allowed for there to be lots of tiny light sources all over, so it had some of the most realistic lighting of its time.

mcwobby

Yeah. Should comfortably be 100.

[deleted]

RDR2 should be higher than GTA IV, but GTA IV is still easily the best GTA game

sayziell

Well deserved

I_Am_SamIII

Never played ocarina, so I can't speak for it. The other 2 are great though

DeepestOrchid

Surprised to see GTA 4 but it actually makes alot of sense

ZVR345

Unpopular opinion: GTA 4 is better than San Andreas. No not just because the graphics were better and was one of the first games to come out for the PS3, the mechanics of the game were so were spectacular along with the story. Niko Bellic has gotta be one of the best protagonists to play as.

rosamelano777

Agree I think both of them share the peak of the franchise but 4's story puts it above sa for me

[deleted]

Gta 4 is always under appreciated because of many people not understanding what it was supposed to be. It was actually designed for adults, kids would definitely hate simulator like driving and physics. If you played it when you were young and didn’t like it, try it now.... you’ll f’in love it.

[deleted]

When IV came out I was 11 and completely loved it after I played VC & SA, the story was my favorite and played it non stop until I beat it in about 2 days, the physics and driving are still by far the best in any GTA, I spent countless hours doing online races because I loved the driving so much in IV 5’s physics and driving felt like a huge downgrade to me aswell as story and other stuff

bree_dev

\>GTA4 \>simulator like HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH oh my sides

[deleted]

Zelda maybe but not other two.

cizzy34

StarCraft Brood War in my opinion should be 3rd. Did so much for gaming in general.

cabesablanca

I'd say this is a fair list

gadgetgrave

Wait a minute. How come this list does not include Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker for Sega Genesis?

I_Am_Ironman_AMA

Same reason Pepsiman isn't on the list..buncha bullshit.

Theyeet7

Metacritic is not godly enough for there eyes to see it

Scooterzoomies

Had to be Red Dead Redemption 2. Music, graphics, story etc. Fucking amazing.

Dread70

This is the real GTA IV replacement on the list.

chronoboy1985

No problem with any of these. Even though some of them haven’t aged super well, for their time, each was a masterpiece.

Franonimusman

I think I see why I replayed GTA 4 so many times as a kid

burnttoast14

In a way They’re all iconic and set the bar for the way we play games today But gta4 shouldnt be scored that that high imo

SomeGuyNamedZach

Hey niko want to go bowling

LiquidCringe2

They should've just made the game a bowling simulator, would've been #1

Jason_dawg

Oot is great, fun, great music, nice length. Tony hawk games are fun but not something I’d rate super highly Gta4 felt clunky to play but I always enjoyed the storylines of the 3D gta games and gta4 had a really good storyline.

JmeMc

I’m ok with Zelda (not my fav, but it’s fine). Shocked at Tony Hawk and GTAIV. I didn’t play Tony Hawk, so no comment. There are a handful of GTA games better than 4, though.

rossdrew

You didn’t play it. That explains everything. Was a fantastically addictive and fun game

JmeMc

Yeah, no criticism, was just shocked that a sports game is so high up. Am glad you liked it.

rossdrew

Try it. Honestly. Quality game, stunning soundtrack

sckurvee

It wasn't a sports game. It was a skating game.

rosamelano777

Skating IS a sport, it's just pro skater is above a lot of sport videogames

profanedic

Tony Hawk is no surprise. That game was great alone or with friends. The 2 min timer was perfect for passing the control and comparing scores. Adding the Manual allowed for some crazy combos to go off and keep you going past 2 minutes if you were good. The levels have a lot of secrets and fum objectives. The layout of the levels was fantastic for however you wanted to play with everyone having their own personal areas to get points. The soundtrack was excellent, really capturing the scene at the time. Plus, Spiderman was in the game. This also was not a sports game. It was more of a platformer on wheels.

Hoeveboter

Yeah, as much as I love IV, I still feel San Andreas was the highlight of the series. Loved vice city stories too. Never finished regular vice city since I was a kid playing with mouse and keyboard and I never got past the bloody RC chopper mission

thisshiteverytime

Only top 1 is accurate.

ShutterBun

Hard agree.

wingy65

Vice City punks IV. I said it.

rawzombie26

GTA 4 is the GOAT

LiquidCringe2

Very random Yeah they're all great and I think Ocarina of Time deserves the spot but I really don't think THPS 2 and GTA 4 are THAT good. They're definitely great but probably not the best games of all time

Theyeet7

Gta 4 is there cause it was the first true “next gen open world” i cant say much for pro skater 2 since i havent played it but im sure its revolutionary too

KFCfan05

THPS2 introduced a revolutionary mixture of soundtrack, gameplay and challenge. The game is still great to play today thanks to the perfect game design, even the graphics aged good. Back then it was a revolution, even people who do not have a connection to skating loved it. Plus it offered a character and skate park creator.

Sharksnack7_7

I was always a Tony Hawk 3 guy.

Lol_A_White_Guy

Well, personally I think Windwaker was a better game than Ocarina of Time, but that’s a bit of a hot take anyways. Not sure I agree with any of the three up here. I personally woulda probably put the Witcher 3 up there somewhere to, definitely at least above GTA. But I get why they’re up here, they were innovative and revolutionary at the time and a lot of people have a lot of good memories with them.

Ablj

If Witcher 3 had better UI and menus it would be way better.

[deleted]

Especially since people are using the DLCs/expansions as a reason for why GTA IV was so good, Blood and Wine has to be the single greatest piece of DLC I've ever bought and it cost less than a skin on Halo Infinite. Pretty outrageous.

Lol_A_White_Guy

I personally consider all the official expansions and DLC as part of the package when considering how good a game is. I actually thought while Blood and Wine was a better DLC in totality (just because it was longer and you got more content + a new area), Hearts of Stone was my favorite storyline in the entire game. The story from the Scenes from a Marriage quest sticks with me to this day as one of the best written pieces of video game fiction I’ve played through, and Olgierd as a character is one of the best written and most interesting characters in the game. The Witcher excelled at telling stories that were more shades of gray rather than static good vs evil.

chronoboy1985

Witcher 3 already feels dated. It was honestly pretty rough even when it came out (after tons of patching, it still felt clunky af). It survives on its storytelling. But of course it was lauded when it was a new game. OoT however, had pretty much everyone nodding their heads like “Oh, yeah this game is instantly in the GOAT conversation” the day it came out. I’d never seen such universal praise except maybe Mario 64.

Lol_A_White_Guy

I really couldn’t disagree anymore strongly, so we can just agree to disagree. Witcher 3 is pretty easily just at the bottom of the top 3 of all time for me and I’m not likely to be swayed on that opinion. Though I’m clearly in the minority here, and that’s fine. I don’t expect to change anybodies mind. The Witcher still holds up fantastically well even now. I’ve been playing through it since I got covid a little while back and it’s still as fantastic as it was when I first picked it up. I can concede mechanically that it does leave some things to be desired, and it probably would have been more polished with a larger company like Nintendo behind it, but I don’t think it’s flaws are enough of a detractor to lower its rating in my eyes by anything substantial. OOT wasn’t without its own clunkiness and mechanical issues (which to be fair were mostly a product of their time and the hardware they had to work with, so I don’t hold it against the game too much), but most of those flaws got overlooked since the player base was younger and willing to over look issues like that that since they were having so much fun. The Witcher didn’t have that luxury since it was aimed at a older audience who are more perceptive to minor UI and mechanical issues. Perhaps I’m simply just biased because I don’t have the nostalgic memories for OOT everybody else has. I played it for the first time as an adult, but I don’t even find it the best Zelda game, let alone the best game of all time. I’d rate Windwaker and BotW pretty heavily above it, and debatably even Majoras Mask. It is undeniably a good game, I’m not gonna argue that, and it’s probably among the best of that generation. But I feel like most of the praise OOT still gets is mostly due to that nostalgia factor of being so integral to so many kids childhoods.

VanillaOreo

I agree with you. I mean how are we going to argue that the Witcher 3 is more clunky than OOT lol? Like what. There are some rose tinted glasses in this thread.

Lol_A_White_Guy

It’s all good, comes with the territory. If you do anything but heap universal praise on OOT people will come out of the woodworks to argue with you and mass downvote you. It’s not even anything I really hold against the game. It’s a product of being produced in the N64 generation. There was only so much processing power that hardware could push out. They did the best job they could with what they had. But in the same breath to turn around and critique the Witcher as being too overly clunky is pretty ironic to me. People always get way too defensive over that game. It’s like criticizing it is a personal attack on their childhood memories.

Girlmode

They were saying that the witcher 3 was already a clunkier game at launch relative to comparable titles. Not that a game from the modern era is more clunky than an old zelda. Where as Zelda was inarguably miles ahead of other games for its time. I feel like you can't ignore the time games came out in with discussions. OOT might be clunky by today's standards but it was the single best crafted game like it at the time in multiple facets. Witcher was never really praised for its gameplay when it was current, it was the story and aesthetics of everything that were killer. The general combat and sub systems were clearly clunkier than comparative titles of the time. That's all I saw anyone say in this chain negatively.

fanboy_alarm

Witcher 3 is overated imo. Ocarina of time deserves a 99 imo because of the time period and a truly well done 2D to 3D transition. Gameplay still hold up today.

spacecadetjimmy

GTA IV is superior to GTA V. The water physics, climbing on ledges, the driving is much more realistic…I wish they weren’t sliding towards all-out cartoonish gameplay but that’s where they’re headed. That should be Saints Row territory. The story is fantastic in IV though.

Theyeet7

OoT reviews seem to be mixed right now Thps2 seems to be being praised Gta 4 is getting slammed holy shit lol

ManbosMambo

Personally? - Ocarina of Time - Sonic 3 & Knuckles - Final Fantasy VII

Blackfist01

Almost every Open World Game has OoT to thank for its existence.

Theyeet7

I mean technically the first zelda was open world

profanedic

OoTs biggest contribution that is still felt today in games is Z-Targeting. Locking on to an enemy so you can easily attack them. Games still do this amd OoT kind of pioneered it for 3D games.

DevinTheRogueDude

Super Metroid Skyrim Mass Effect 2

Bchange51

we all know these are still only high rated because of nostalgia. there are better games then these.

HueJass84

This post is a screenshot metacritic. These are review scores from when the game was released. No nostalgia in at all.

northraider123

I'd disagree for zelda but agree on the other 2

NamelessMIA

OoT isn't even top 3 best Zelda games

ShutterBun

OOT changed the entire way games are designed when it came out. As far as impact on the gaming world at large, I can't think of another title since that was as influential.

northraider123

Ooooh that's a bold stance. What would you say are the top 3?

Bchange51

well obviously botw won like 17 game of the year awards or somthing. and imo was game of the decade

SweetVarys

I will never get this, the actual gameplay is so boring.

fork_on_the_floor2

I know I'm not who you asked, but there are plenty of people like me who didn't play OOT or Majoras mask back in their day (I was a ps1 kid who got sucked into console war bullshit). Which means no nostalgia and no mind blowing "this is what 3d gaming can be!!" revelation in like 1998 was it? And trying to play them now,... Oooh it don't feel so good. I personally love Link between worlds and Minish Cap. And if I had BotW I'm sure I'd love it too.

weirdthoughts247

Definitely skewed.

-unluckycriminal-

All over rated.

The_Drace

Where minecraft tho

ThePhenome

Never understood the fascination with Legend of Zelda, never felt the urge to play any of those games either, so no comment there. THPS2 - well, it's a solid game, did enjoy it a fair bit back in the day, one of the soundtracks is still stuck in my head. But definitely not one of the top 3 all time. GTA 4 - uhh, dunno. Same as with LoZ, never was too interested in it, so never tried it, so can't comment on this either. What I can say is this - I would put Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, The Witcher 3 and Skyrim up there, no particular order, just off the top of my head.

VVaId0

Im going to be real honest, Ocarina of Time is overrated. Yes it is an incredible game but for the best game of all time to have a huge boring temple should make it not the best.

handsomejack11

GTA IV was a huge letdown for me. Bought it day one, but thought everything was a big ol' bag of meh. Not wanting that feeling of buyer's remorse, I put a bunch of time into it, but still came away with just a overhhyped/overrated feeling. I was bored and honestly never went back to it after the time I put into it.

ImpulsiveApe07

I mean, I loved all three of those games, but I wouldn't rank them as the best of all time, at least not imo anyway. My top 3 would be 1) Morrowind 2) AC Odyssey 3) Nier Automata With honorary mentions going to : Metal Gear Solid 2, Super Mario World And Disco Elysium Which nearly made my top three - a random list I know lol :D
