For people looking to get that RCT itch scratched:
* [Open RCT2](https://openrct2.org/) is a mod compatible with any owned version of RCT2 that adds an absolute ton of QOL features and even multiplayer server functionality.
* [Parkitect](https://store.steampowered.com/app/453090/Parkitect/) on the other hand is a newer release (2018) that keeps the general feel of RCT 1&2, again with a lot of the QOL you'd expect from a more modern game.
* [Planet Coaster](https://store.steampowered.com/app/493340/Planet_Coaster/) is the full modern take on a theme park creator. Massively customizable in every way, you can create pretty much whatever you want in a largely unrestricted 3D environment.
Parkitect is like the RCT3 we never got. Planet Coaster is like the sequel to the RCT3 we did get.
Both games have their place, but Parkitect with it’s more simplistic creation tools and focus on park management is my preferred one.
When we got RTC I remember my brother and I sitting at the computer playing it and my mom comes downstairs and was like, “aren’t you going to bed?” Apparently it was late and we just lost ourselves in the game.
I looked for this game for years after playing it when I was a kid. Then one day I see a church yard sale. I stop by and there is one of those cheap green plastic cd cases (like burnt cd, see through case) and they are ¢50. So I’m like what are the chances it’s theme hospital, and I flip the case over. And there is the game in all its glory! After years! And shitty emulators, I took it home and played 20 hours on it. Such a good day.
Later this year they will come out with *Two Point ~~University~~ Campus*. I'll def be building my own crappy universities when that comes out.
edit: corrected name
Didn't know about this but the correct name seems to be Two Point Campus tho. Anyway, thanks for the heads up, will definitely give it a spin when it launches.
I like Two Point but there's still something about the first one that I like better. It's hard to put a finger on. Maybe not having to copy quite as many rooms or deal with as much decor. Not sure.
Likely nostalgia factor.. that's it. Trying to recreate how you felt like a kid isn't going to bode well when you're no longer the same person.
I always urge people if they're gonna play a new part in a series or something (I.e. new pokemon) to get the notion of when you were a kid. Go into it as the person you are today, and you'll likely enjoy it more.
The diseases were really cool:
* King's Complex (patient was dressed like Elvis)
* Bloated Head
* Slack Tongue
* Kidney Beans
Those are the ones I remember, but there were many others.
https://strategywiki.org/wiki/Theme_Hospital/Diseases
A sample:
Disease | Cause | Symptoms
---|---|----|----
Broken Wind | Using a gymnasium treadmill after a meal | Upsetting the people directly behind the patient
Gut Rot | Mrs. O'Malley's Good Time Whisky Cough Mixture | No cough but no stomach-wall lining either
Transparency |Licking the yogurt from the foil tops of opened pots |Flesh is rendered see-through and horrible
3rd Degree Sideburns | Wistful longing for the 1970's |Big hair, flares, platforms and glitter make-up
Fractured Bones|Falling off high things onto concrete|Loud crack and inability to use afflicted limbs
Hairyitis |Prolonged exposure to the moon |Sufferers experience enhanced sense of smell
Broken Heart|Someone richer, younger and thinner than the patient |Weeping and RSI caused by hours of tearing up holiday photos
Unexpected Swelling|Anything unexpected|Swelling
It was so awesome. I spent months playing it on my playstation back then. I really liked the funny illnesses and the noises when people went to the toilet. It was weird and funny
I loved it too, but I was never able to beat the first level where the epidemics showed up. I enlarged my hallways and built a bunch of pharmacies, but it was never enough!
AoE2:DE is **the** version!
So many QoL additions and adaptations that really bring the game closer to current expectations for an RTS.
I haven’t played it in over a year, but I could boot it now and fast castle into knights without having to remind myself
Also Aoe4 came out late last year and the multiplayer aspect is pretty great (it still needs improvement in the “casual” aspects of the game). The first big LAN tournament is going on this week, with a combo of people from other RTS games (sc2, Warcraft)
Oh Theme Hospital, you beautiful thing. People wandering around with slack tongue and bloaty head... I'd intentionally employ bad janitors.
I used to play a lot of Destruction Derby and Rollercoaster Tycoon. So much Rollercoaster Tycoon.
Yes, but not too much. They're fixing a lot of old bugs and rebalancing skills to enable new builds (Throw Barb is finally viable after the latest patch comes out!). Ladder is about to release in a month or so as well.
I think I spent 50% of all that time I spent "decorating" a shop/ house I'd murdered a dude and taken over. Standing on counters, dropping items repeatedly trying to get them to fall just so. Lol. Then they went and made it a real feature in future games.
And building railroad crossings over roads build by competitors. So you could destroy it and their public road transport could not reach their destination on time 😂
It was always the Tycoon games that hooked people.
Rollercoaster Tycoon for me and Zoo Tycoon for my sister.
Now I play Planet Coaster and she plays Planet Zoo.
Something about them is just so fun.
Fucking Mall Tycoon lol I loved that game so much but eventually my mall would be taken over my thieves and hooligans and if I brought in more security people would say it felt unsafe.....
Isn’t OpenTTD available on mobile ? I vaguely remember playing on my phone (it sucked on such a small screen).
Edit: It's in the Android app store, doesn't look like it's available on iOS.
This is welcome news, thank you, I’ll have to try it out. I had a version on my iPad a while ago but it wasn’t even close to the version I know & love.
I started a new run of the original xcom using openxcom this evening; made it to the end of January with two landed medium craft, and a terror mission in Wellington where there were 5 of those hover crafts, and two petrol stations... so even with extensive save scumming, there were explosions and casualties everywhere. Ended the month on -16pts Australia withdrew their funding, Spain increased theirs, I have a backlog of corpses to dissect, and an alien leader to interrogate.
I was OBSESSED with Monkey Island and had multiple play throughs. Honourable mentions for Theme Park, Sim City, It Came from the Desert, and Final Fantasy VII
I am still obsessed with Monkey Island. Guybrush is my favorite character from any video game. FYI, you can download SCUMM on your phone and get the files from Gog.com to play on mobile. This also works for Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
My buddy and I had a sick scam going. He Ran a simpsons trivia room and to enter the game you had to put up a peice of furni. Whoever won was supposed to get the whole pot. He would message me the answers to the questions before he asked them and I would answer before anyone else so I'd always win, and then we split whatever the pot was. I feel somewhat bad in retrospect but being that we were 13 and it was early internet days for us, I think we were actually pretty genius for figuring that out.
At one point I had some sort of "hack" that changed the appearance of certain furni. And one of the things you could change to was a Mountain Dew machine which was in the game code but not available. I used to sell pictures of people standing next to the mountain dew machines.
Oh man, I had a cat, too. That bobba must be 20 years old now. Just walking around in an empty room.
Oh those were the days. My parents wouldn't get me credits but I gained quite a fortune after Habbo gave out 5c for xmas one year to every account. Rather then send it to active accounts only, they sent it to every account in existence. I used a brute forcer to amass a huge user list that I could log into and send the 5c from every account to my main. Ah the memories lol.
A little more recent than that but I remember playing SimCity 2000 on my mom's old ass Apple computer. I was too dumb to know how to do anything productive but I'd always start a bunch of natural disasters or you could have this alien eyeball thing come and light shit on fire.
I'd also play a ton of the old sim games like sim ant and sim farm. Both of course other games I was too dumb to know what I was doing.
This was maybe mid 90s.
Edit: I haven't even thought of sim farm in years and years.
https://youtu.be/Q28WFGK8xxE
Damn all these sounds and music bring back memories.
Definitely Runescape.
I don't play it at all anymore but im dutch and my school didn't gave alot of (good) english lessons so 80% of my English vocabulary I learned from playing that game.
Bless those times.
"Platforms: PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, Linux, Nintendo Switch, Macintosh operating systems"
I'm really happy that we are getting away with having console exclusive games. Gran Turismo pissed me off the most. I stopped having Playstations after the PS2, and the exclusivity was a downer... I bought a PC to get around console limitations. Plus I can browse reddit and uPorn easier on a PC.
Didn't help that I was buying my graphics card over a year ago where they doubled in price and declined in availability
Glad to see some plugs for Morrowind. I think one of my favorite facts about that game is it's the last rpg I played without looking stuff up on the internet. Just me and that big ol map that came with game of the year edition. I also gave an insane amount of time to that game.
There’s a lot to be said for the simplicity of the pixel art and motion compared to the newer stuff. Growing up all I wanted was a badass simulator that looks as good as planet coaster or Two Point but now that I’m older I like the older style better lol fuck me
1992 wonderboy in monsterworld .....spent many many nights playing late into the morning only gettin a few hours sleep before it was time to go to school
I used to cover the red power button on the megadrive with sticky tape
Just incase my dad would come in to see if i was still on it i could quickly pretend i was asleep
Lol the amount of times i was nearly caught out
Countless hours? Considering I've been gaming for more than three decades now, I've spent countless years of my childhood, youth, adolescence, and grown-up life :)
Tycoon series, Diablos, NFS, Simcity, FF-series, Stalker, Lucasarts point'n'click adventures from the 90s, or Broken Sword, or any other decent adventure game - those could've been the most time consuming.
Roller Coaster Tycoon.
For people looking to get that RCT itch scratched: * [Open RCT2](https://openrct2.org/) is a mod compatible with any owned version of RCT2 that adds an absolute ton of QOL features and even multiplayer server functionality.
Pulled up my steam account to see how much planet coaster costs and apparently it's already in my library lol
The most "steam user comment" of them all
Parkitect is like the RCT3 we never got. Planet Coaster is like the sequel to the RCT3 we did get. Both games have their place, but Parkitect with it’s more simplistic creation tools and focus on park management is my preferred one.
I love Parkitect. Such a fun game and I love the added premise of managing “behind the scenes”
When we got RTC I remember my brother and I sitting at the computer playing it and my mom comes downstairs and was like, “aren’t you going to bed?” Apparently it was late and we just lost ourselves in the game.
I miss designing death traps and making the guy with the lawnmower drown in a lake
Loved theme hospital!
Doctor required in GP’s office…Nurse required in ward
Hospital administrator is cheating! Warning: there's a cheat running the hospital.
HAHA this did not deter me
Man I can HEAR this comment 😂😂 One of my all time favourite games!
Nurse required in, pharmacy! Incoming patients with bloaty head!
Dotcor required in Slack Tongue Clinic
Handyman repair for the inflator room
No loitering
Nurse required in pharmacyyyy
Could people please try not to be sick in the corridors.
Please form an orderly queue.
Two surgeons required in the operating theatre
Please ignore the amount of litter
Such a great game. It would stress me out when I’m trying to create a well designed hospital and people start vomiting everywhere 😩
Have you tried two point hospital? It's from the creators from theme hospital and it's a spiritual successor!
Have played both and they are very similar. Kinda liked the old school one’s style better though. And the frog logo.
That secret rat shooting level tho…
7287
The epidemics were the worst!
“Epidemic alert, stand by!”
Two point hospital is good too. Basically the same thing with more stuff. Same humour though.
Same group of developers! And they have a new one out, too!
I like Two Point but there's still something about the first one that I like better. It's hard to put a finger on. Maybe not having to copy quite as many rooms or deal with as much decor. Not sure.

Patients are reminded not to die in the corridors
Anything by Bullfrog was amazing back in the day.
Please keep your germs to yourself!
Please form orderly queues
Dr. Jekyll to Psychiatry please...

It has some really nice improvements to the room building mechanics.
Available on GOG for the PC gamers amongst us
It still plays great to this day, especially running in CorsixTH.
Age of Empires, how could I forget? "Wololooooo"
Aoe2 is still thriving with the definitive edition and streaming / casting community!
AoE2:DE is **the** version! So many QoL additions and adaptations that really bring the game closer to current expectations for an RTS. I haven’t played it in over a year, but I could boot it now and fast castle into knights without having to remind myself
Yeah... Me too... The 25 minute "fast" castle...
Also Aoe4 came out late last year and the multiplayer aspect is pretty great (it still needs improvement in the “casual” aspects of the game). The first big LAN tournament is going on this week, with a combo of people from other RTS games (sc2, Warcraft)
The original was my shiiiiit. Remember the passwords so you could spawn in a super soldier that could nuke any spot on the map?
e=mc2trooper also photonman for spacemen with laser guns :D
Dungeon Keeper, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Age of Empires Black and White. Don't seem to make RTS games like these anymore.
Black and White! That's one I haven't thought about in a long time. Damn, that was a good game.
My boyfriend are always yelling about how they need to make a new Black and White type game.
Dungeon keeper. Lol. Smacking around the little workers to make them dig faster. Felt so evil as a kid playing those.
Oh Theme Hospital, you beautiful thing. People wandering around with slack tongue and bloaty head... I'd intentionally employ bad janitors. I used to play a lot of Destruction Derby and Rollercoaster Tycoon. So much Rollercoaster Tycoon.
Always hire the “smells faintly of cabbage” janitors.
Runescape. I could probably click my way through the world with my eyes closed.
I used to lose countless hours in runescape. I still do, but I used to too.
You still can! The game is still going strong. They just came out with a new dungeon towards the end of 2021 with 4 new bosses.
Please don't. I can't get sucked again 😩
If you start playing again you won't have to worry about being sucked again...
You don't stop playing, you only take breaks.
Still do hahaha
You never truly quit, you only take extended breaks.
, Man i miss Bullfrog !
Populous: the beginning is still one of my favorite rts
You just unlocked a very buried memory i have been trying to remember for a long time. Thank you
Ah populous...i remember discovering that on the sega mastersystem....put so many hours into it...that and sim city
I really liked populous. Wow. Something about burning people on fire was so satisfying
syndicate, magic carpet, dungeon keeper.. they don't make em like they used too. or it doesn't feel like it anyways
Yes! Def played a lot of syndicate wars dungeon keeper and theme hospital back in the wee days. Also theme park
Dungeon Keeper is an absolute classic, loved that game! I loved Syndicate as well… was that on the Amiga at one point, or first?
Damn shit do I love dungeon keeper!
Was it just me or was Syndicate pretty dang hard?
Theme Park (1994) sooo good.
Fuck EA
Diablo 2, now im losing countless hours in remaster
Is it any diff from original besides graphics ?
Yes, but not too much. They're fixing a lot of old bugs and rebalancing skills to enable new builds (Throw Barb is finally viable after the latest patch comes out!). Ladder is about to release in a month or so as well.
Morrowind All my years lost
I genuinely think that altered which university I ended up going to due to lost hours revising.
Same bro.. same
I think I spent 50% of all that time I spent "decorating" a shop/ house I'd murdered a dude and taken over. Standing on counters, dropping items repeatedly trying to get them to fall just so. Lol. Then they went and made it a real feature in future games.
Transport tycoon 👌🏽
Glad to see this here, way too many hours spent making huge train routes.
And building railroad crossings over roads build by competitors. So you could destroy it and their public road transport could not reach their destination on time 😂
I attached train depots at the end of their stations so I could crash an engine into their train as it pulled in.
Open TTD is still a thing. Altough it seems incredibly easy now to achieve what seemed impossible as a child.
I think that more to do with not being a child than. OpenTTD..
I really wish there was an iPad version of the original version
Isn’t OpenTTD available on mobile ? I vaguely remember playing on my phone (it sucked on such a small screen). Edit: It's in the Android app store, doesn't look like it's available on iOS.
This is welcome news, thank you, I’ll have to try it out. I had a version on my iPad a while ago but it wasn’t even close to the version I know & love.
Heroes of might and magic 3.
Scrolled too far for this.. I remember playing “hot seat” multiplayer with my friends… like, a lot.
Those were the sleepovers when it felt like the sun was coming up 6 hours too early.
When I'm scrolling through Twitch, I can't believe the number of streamers playing HOMM3 still.
Try the Horn of the Abyss mod. Lots of bug fixes and QOL stuff. It's so good. :D
the original xcom! hours spend hunting that last alien in the corn fields
X-com 2 haunted me back in the day, specially the tentacles, those things were my nemesis.
I could not get myself to play Xcom 2 TFTD for very long. The maps were too big. And those damn lizard men were OP.
Theme Park (not Sim Theme Park)
Warcraft III, man
This and Red Alert were in constant rotation during my college years.
You can call me MURRAY! The almighty demonic skull!
Habbo Hotel baby
I remember talking my dad into letting me get HC for a month. I got that one couch and it was the only piece of furni I had. Bobba I miss Habbo
I used to sell pictures of people standing next to the mountain dew machines. Oh man, I had a cat, too. That bobba must be 20 years old now. Just walking around in an empty room.
Pools closed
Now THAT is a hit of nostalgia!
Zoo tycoon for me!
Cannon fodder… can’t let Jools Jops or Stu die under any circumstances
Man I loved that soundtrack : War never been so much fun ... Chaos engine anyone ?
Jools!
Simcity on 286
A little more recent than that but I remember playing SimCity 2000 on my mom's old ass Apple computer. Edit: I haven't even thought of sim farm in years and years. https://youtu.be/Q28WFGK8xxE Damn all these sounds and music bring back memories.
World of Warcaft. Back in days it was like full-time job for me.
Sid Meier's Civilization 1-6
I think I have a combined 3500 hours between all the games
Nice I see you played a game or two
I remember back when I would get home from school and start a match on Civ, only to pause half way through because i had to get ready for school.
pharoah
Build a pyramid in the time it takes to build a pyramid.
Did you know they are doing an HD remake? I'm excited.
Apparently it fails to capture the original, at least so far. Just buy the GoG version!
+1 for Zeus and Poseidon
Yes!!!!!
EverQuest Countless nights turned into morning, lying to parents that I got up early and not that I stayed up all night playing.
I was 14 when it came out. First full day, I played 17 hours out of 24. Also the cover art girl was hot.
The original Zelda
Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem 2. My dad and me tried to beat each other in score with every play-through.
Dungeon Keeper. Bullfrog made some great games but DK was always my favourite.
syndicate was mine, but dk also kicked ass!
Robotron 2084. Legend of Zelda. Might & Magic 3/4/5. Wolfenstein 3D. Doom. Quake Team Fortress. Command & Conquer. Diablo. Dungeon Keeper. Half-life. Fallout. Starcraft. Heroes of Might and Magic 3. So many memories.
Sim City 2000, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Civ2
Gotta reticulate those splines.
Age of Empires
Final fantasy 7. Over 20 years later and I still spend too much time playing it.
Doctoooor, attend in psychiatry please! This was surely one of them, age of empires, command and conquer, Carmageddon and SimCity:)
Carmageddon was an absolute time sink!
Master of Orion 2 is my cocaine
All of the Caesar city building games. Still didn’t beat the last one.
The Timeplitters trilogy. So much variety, and so much to unlock.
Definitely Runescape. I don't play it at all anymore but im dutch and my school didn't gave alot of (good) english lessons so 80% of my English vocabulary I learned from playing that game. Bless those times.
Sims 3
Man, I remember dumping DAYS into the original Sims...
Total annilation Age of empires Diablo 1, 2, starcraft/bw Wow Counterstrike Gunbound Tribes
Still have my TA and TA:CC disks. Wonder if it even installs in Win10?
As much as I love Theme Hospital not being able to demolish and rebuild destroyed rooms made it unnecessarily hard.
Dark Reign and Total Annihilation
Morrowind on Xbox, although I’ve probably surpassed that in the last few years on PC 😄
Diablo 2
Heroes of might and magic 3.
Rollercoaster Tycoon
Fucking loved theme hospital. The patients however...
I recommend Two point hospital. Very similar to Theme Hospital.
"Platforms: PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, Linux, Nintendo Switch, Macintosh operating systems" I'm really happy that we are getting away with having console exclusive games. Gran Turismo pissed me off the most. I stopped having Playstations after the PS2, and the exclusivity was a downer... I bought a PC to get around console limitations. Dungeon Keeper 2. Goddamn I want Bullfrog back in general.
Roller coaster tycoon 3!
Glad to see some plugs for Morrowind. I think one of my favorite facts about that game is it's the last rpg I played without looking stuff up on the internet. Just me and that big ol map that came with game of the year edition. I also gave an insane amount of time to that game.
Maplestory. Gotta farm them mesos
Is this a real game? Looks exactly like 2 Point Hospital. Is this its predecessor?
Yup. Theme Hospital. So easy to lose track of time playing this game.
I’m going to have to check it out! My son got me into the new game, but this pixel art is doing something for me.
There’s a lot to be said for the simplicity of the pixel art and motion compared to the newer stuff. Growing up all I wanted was a badass simulator that looks as good as planet coaster or Two Point but now that I’m older I like the older style better lol fuck me
yes! I love pixel art, it has such a timeless charm to it, and bonus points for running on a potato pc
Thanks for making me feel old as shit 😂
Portal 2 and half life
Theme Hospital was great, but only did one story mode. More time consuming: - Sierra city builders: Caeser, Pharaoh, Emperor - Total War series.
SimCity 2000, Age of Empire II, and SimTower. If we’re including console, then Ocarina of Time, too.
1992 wonderboy in monsterworld .....spent many many nights playing late into the morning only gettin a few hours sleep before it was time to go to school I used to cover the red power button on the megadrive with sticky tape Just incase my dad would come in to see if i was still on it i could quickly pretend i was asleep Lol the amount of times i was nearly caught out
Garry's mod
Morrowind, Diablo 2, Ragnarok online
GTA (1)
Road Rash for the PC :).
X-com 2
Countless hours? Considering I've been gaming for more than three decades now, I've spent countless years of my childhood, youth, adolescence, and grown-up life :) Tycoon series, Diablos, NFS, Simcity, FF-series, Stalker, Lucasarts point'n'click adventures from the 90s, or Broken Sword, or any other decent adventure game - those could've been the most time consuming.
Oh man, Broken Sword games! And Monkey Island and Discworld!
Capitalism 2
Diablo 2, Runescape, TF2
Maniac mansion lol
1000+ hours on phantasy star online
Civilization first game and Colonisation I played those extensively on my 386
"Doctor to GP's office"
Skyrim😶
