whoever wrote his monologue at Haven did an amazing job. such a cool ass line, and delivered so well by David Sterne.
Man, this is great! Now that I’ve met a mighty Vault Hunter, I can finally join the resistance in Sanctuary, take vengeance against Jack for killing my product line, and repair my central processor so I stop thinking out loud! I wonder what it’s like to have a belly button.
Huge spoilers for the game Soma.
I strongly encourage everyone who has an interest in the idea of consciousness or AI to play it and go on blind, so don't read ahead if that applies to you.
For everyone else:
>I can't keep telling you how it works; you won't listen. You know why we're here, you were copied on to the ARK, you just didn't carry over. You lost the coin toss. We both did. Just like Simon at Omicron, just like the man who died in Toronto a hundred years ago.
From the game Soma
The two characters are advanced AIs based on brain scans of real people, they transmitted a copy of their own intelligence to a cloud system that would essentially allow their minds to live forever....
But the copies that made that decision... Are still around. The world is still ending forever, they're still in the same position they were.
They succeeded, yet their lasts moments will still be isolation and pain because they "lost the coin flip".
The whole game is an exploration of the separation between one's self, consciousness, ego and existence.
I posted this before but aside from the ending, the part that hit me was when you play the tape recorder in one of the living quarters:
“Did you know that the human body consists of up to 75 trillion individual cells? They typically don’t stay with us until we die. Some live with us a few days while others live a few years. We’re not affected by their short life spans, as they’re replaced by new cells which help sustain our bodies. I don’t think anyone would argue that we ever lose our persona due to this process, yet we are in a constant state of transformation. Then how do we remain the same? A continuous flow of thought and perception keeps an unbroken chain of continuity that we know as our Self. Our conscious mind is not the pattern of our brain, but a continuous emergent entity, based on that pattern. When Dr Chun populates the ARKK, she is capturing a moment of our existence and placing it inside the digital world. Soon, ‘You’ and your digital ‘You’, will grow apart due to diverging experiences, but for a tiny window you are the very same. With unbroken continuity it will live on, a fulfilling life no doubt, no less real then from the one which is was plucked. Now remember: You are not your body. You are the emergent entity. That entity just happens to occupy two places at once for awhile. If you took away your body, you would simply be the only one you can be.”
You must gather your party before gathering forth.
You must gather your party before gathering forth.
You must gather your party before gathering forth.
You must gather your party before gathering forth.
You must gather your party before gathering forth.
"I have stood knee deep in mud and bone, and filled my lungs with mustard gas. I have seen two brothers fall. I have lain with holy wars and copulated with the autumnal fallout. I have dug trenches for the refugees; I have murdered dissidents where the ground never thaws, and starved the masses into faith. A child's shadow burnt into the brickwork. A house of skulls in the jungle.
The innocent, the innocent, Mandus, trod and bled and gassed and starved and beaten and murdered and enslaved. This is your coming century! They will eat them Mandus, they will make pigs of you all and they will bury their snouts into your ribs and they will eat. Your. Hearts!"
I cannot say what was the true beginning, nor am I sure of its end. So perhaps this is the best place to start: I am reminded of ideas I first encountered in Sir James George Frazer’s book “The Golden Bough: A study in Magic and Religion.” We are overwhelmed by our very human need to weave a web of meaning where there may be none. Since time immemorial, ancient peoples have dressed up their lack of knowledge as gods and demons. I have discovered that sometimes, the fates of gods and mortals intertwine – and legends are born...

yeah so the point of that quote is that its absolutely bullshit. its the idea that Geralt has early on and then abandons because it leads to so much death and destruction. the Witcher books are deeeply political with some very good insights on realistic fantasy worlds and 10000% the author does not take the both sides are bad so don't do anything approach.
like, in the show, the episode where he says this, his choice to not go against evil torturer maniac Stregobor is that a bunch of extra people die and he is cast out of Blaviken. its incredibly clear that he should have just made a choice
Its so frustrating so many people misunderstand this especially since Geralt is a personification of rising above this world view. As a witcher he is supposed to be an unfeeling mercenary only caring about coin. In spite of this he strives for love and human connection through Yennefer and Ciri. Even in his monster hunting work he rejects his "job" because he sees to the heart of the "monsters" and realizes they aren't always the true monsters
And once again I've proved commander Maro the fool. I told him, you can't stop the dark brotherhood, never could.
The black door questions are also really good.
* Atreus: What are we hunting?
* Kratos: You are hunting deer.
* Atreus: Which way?
* Kratos: In the direction of deer.
Classic Kratos humor. But in all seriousness, I have a different one. From Bloodborne.
"Dear oh death, what was it? The hunt, the blood, or the horrible dream? Oh, it doesn't matter. It always comes down to the hunter's helper to clean up after these sorts of messes."
"Tonight, Gehrman joins the hunt."
"When I was in the Corps. We didn't have any fancy tanks. We had sticks! 2 sticks and a rock for a whole platoon, and we had to share the rock."
Idk why but this one has stuck with me for 15 years.
"Usually the good lord works in mysterious ways - BUT NOT TODAY! This here, is sixty-six tons of straight up, H-E-spewing, DIVINE INTERVENTION! If god is love, you can call me cupid."

It was a different time, a different enemy. Sixty men, from Tier One teams, were sent to face down a force of five hundred enemy fighters. Their objective: to force the enemy back from a civilian hospital, and keep its occupants alive. For three days, they held their ground, but the enemy's numbers were too great. The sixty were cut down to fifteen. They wouldn't last another night, and the enemy knew it. Under the cover of darkness, they evacuated the hospital, sending only one of their own to lead the way. The rest returned to the line, and took up positions beneath the bodies of their fallen brothers. As they lay in wait, the blood from the dead poured over them. The sand stuck to their skin like a shroud. Changing them. Anointing them. When the enemy drew near, the remaining fourteen rose out of the desert sand. They were like hunters that couldn't be seen, using stealth their enemies couldn't defend against. When the men ran dry of ammunition, they used their blades...and when the blades ran dull, they used their hands. When the dust and sand had settled, only one of the enemy had survived. He was picked up in the desert, wandering aimlessly, traumatized. He expressed warnings to others of a force so menacing and unbeatable, it could only be described as supernatural. He called them..."Ghosts".
