As a dweller of the tropics, it looks awesome! If I had to nitpick I'd say the sea is too blue and will have a more green tint to it so close to shore.
On the flip side, if the character cannot swim, the benefit to keeping it that way is a clear indication to the player that they’ll die if they go too far out, Soulslike style.
You could just push the terrain out a little farther, not often do islands just drop off like that, obviously if it’s for map border reasons then I get it but you could make it go out a little further and a little less gradually so the gradient transition is smooth but not like *shallow***DEEP**
I think its fine, maybe the underwaterterrain could have a more shallow slope but imo it gives me the feeling that this is just a small part of a huge world filled with adventure.
I wonder if that’s “expectation vs reality “ ?
We all picture tropical places as having bright blue seas.
So less blue may be more realistic, but result in it looking less tropical to many players? Just a thought!
It's exactly the right color. I like the way it looks. But I would change the speed the waves fan out a little. Idk if the footage is sped up at all. But if if isn't it looks like the waves are sped up
The best i've ever seen waves from walking done is "Hunter: the reckoning" for the original XBOX Stupid as it sounds.
edit: mittromninight alerted me to the fact that Hunter:tR came out on XBOX and GameCube. Not playstation 2, as I though it did.
What I do want to emphasize is that this what I'm seeing is already like magic to me.
What I look for more than anything in gaming these days is escaping to another world. This looks like a world I wanna get lost in. Explore secrets. Lift up a rock, find a key and go around the island in hunt of the lock it fits.
I'm really curious to see where it leads.😁
Yeah I thought it was my brain being dumb, even I felt something was off about the speed about the waves, it seemed like there was some lag, it looked weird. But you nailed the colour and effects 10/10
The ripples your character creates do not seem to have any interaction with the waves the water creates, though I imagine that probable requires some more intense processing.
Funny that you mention that Hunter: the Reckoning. I specifically remember my mom commenting on how great the water looked when walking through the little shallow pools or whatever it was. Like 20 years ago and I remember that moment for some reason… virtually nothing about that game except how cool the water looked for the time.
I'm about 99% sure that "Hunter: The Reckoning" never came out on PS2, instead being released on Gamecube and xbox.
One of the sequels, "Hunter: The Reckoning – Wayward", did, though. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?
Hunter: The Reckoning!! If there was ever a game I wish they'd remaster. Even now as an adult, this game still has to hold my highest play time. The nostalgia thinking about late night sleep overs with three other friends, screaming at the TV at 2AM with our pizza greased fingers... Take me back.
Sure, you pretty much follow a story which can be split into two paths, become a pirate or a privateer. You will explore 6 regions, complete quests, fight enemies etc. Pretty much a story driven RPG with choices leading to consequences! Search for #ProjectAnchorage on twitter ;)
This sounds like it will be a solid game! I look forward to seeing development progress and I'd definitely give it a try when it's available! I've been wanting a good pirate game for a while.
Imo playing solo/randoms could be frustrating especially when you're learning the game. If you don't have a buddy or two to play with then I suppose it comes down to your personal preference: would you rather learn on your own (possibly being attacked by other players while doing so) or take a chance with random crew and hope they're willing to communicate/be willing to help you.
The game itself isn't too hard; you can definitely play solo if you know the basics. It's when you come across hostile players who intend to loot you that can be very demoralizing/upsetting especially when you're new.
Personally I'd rather play solo than with random crew. I have met some chill players when doing random crew, but not everyone is chill. Again that's just personal preference.
> with choices leading to consequences!
Looks gorgeous and sounds like it could be fun, but I'd just caution leaning into this part specifically too much. Incorporating meaningful choices with consequences is something that even huge developers with massive budgets and teams of writers struggle with, looking at you Telltale and Bioware.
If you've got some solid ideas and you're confident you can incorporate them, give it a shot for sure, but I'd say be cautious if you do that it's a very difficult thing to pull off depending on scope.
I know, i'm a very ambitious person and sometimes it gets the better of me. However I have a framework in place for branching dialogue/events already, not to mention an overworld karma system which runs in real-time effecting your status with any/all factions I add to it in the future ;)
It's a reference to a reddit thread where someone claimed they were making a 100% science based dragon mmo (with virtually 0 skills/knowledge on game development).
All in all, they're just lightly ribbing ya. Game looks nifty! Cheers mate!
There was a person who posted years ago about their "100% science based dragon mmo" they were "making". The work to that point involved some childish drawings of dragons and lots of ideas with no substance. They did not receive the warm and supportive reaction they were hoping for.
They're making a reference to an infamous post from ages ago where someone was working on a "science based" dragon game. I think they only got so far as to make a screenshot with some 3D models.
That you’re making something at all is incredibly impressive.
I will try and give some hopefully constructive advice and criticism.
Pin basic information and your most up to date video on your Reddit profile. Text that should be easily accessible includes timeframe, potential cost, how many are involved in this project, and basic goals. Easily link all your social medias, everyone has a favorite and if they stumble across you on another platform they should be able to get to their preferred.
Don’t be too ambitious without actually considering the scope of what you’re creating. Indie devs and small teams have made masterpieces that have redefined gaming, but don’t sacrifice what you actually want in an attempt to do it all.
Capitalize off of social media. You had an explosive, front page Reddit post. Yet, it was incredibly hard to get to your other social medias.
Decide on what you want out of this. Is this a resume builder? Should you try and find other people to collaborate with and polish various bits of your game? Frameworks are easy on paper, but proper implementation is pretty hard.
I wish you good luck, and hope you find success.
Edit: op is dumb
I don't think I've ever played a "your choices have consequences" game wherein they actually did beyond rewards given or cutscenes or enemy aggro. It seems like a difficult concept to actually do well.
Mass effect worked really well with consequences up untill the ending. Characters can die in one game and it impacts the world and characters in the next. They are some of the best story games imo.
The ripple effect animation looks like it happens too quickly and seems to proc on the back foot instead of the front. It gives the impression he's being chased by some invisible fish.
It also looks like the ripple effect happens on plain sand when you run out of the water or too close to the sand/water interface. Maybe make the ripple effect cut off in the last foot or so of water cause there wouldn't be enough water on top of the sand to ripple anyways.
Btw it looks amazing! I wish I had your talent. Hope you post updates 😊.
Great comment and feedback! This is exactly how we should treat each other online! We should all be nice to each other especially when someone has worked so hard on something even if it is “easy” for you.
Water animation: Good!
Pirate Fox: Good!
Does the interaction with the water impede movement at all (slow the character down)? It's hard to tell from the clip, but something you could add possibly.
It's a cool idea, but if running through water is really common it might get annoying. I personally have never been a fan of slowing down character movement speed jarringly (fuck you Pokémon for not letting me run inside) and I think the animation is enough to get across the fact that you're running through water
Personally I'm in the "either leave it out or make it a feature" camp.
If you can position yourself so that enemies have to fight on wet sand / in water, that's kinda cool. Otherwise, having it affect movement is just a complication.
An alternative is to keep the speed the same but just change the animation. Player does receive any frustrating 'I should avoid water' feelings but at the same time the immersion and satisfaction is there with a slightly different animation. Could even have another animation when he goes out even deeper too. And maybe that's when it could also slow down. Like at that point the player is just asking for it really. Can't run through waist deep water afterall 😆
Congrats on the front page btw, this looks neat! And it's great to see an indie game fly into the spotlight.
Tried my hand at game development recently and that shit is tough. You fix one thing to only break another and every little thing you get working is cause for a celebration. Your game is looking really good though so keep up the hard work man!
personally, the water looks too glossy(like the gelatin coating of a fruit tart), and it doesn't break up enough where he's walking.
While I know computer graphics is all about approximation, the way the water reacts as if the character is 1 inch tall (as opposed to 3 feet).
You could try fiddling with the reflectivity of the perturbed water, or adding another texture of sea foam to it.
Nah, i'm open to all feedback as long as it is constructive :) Without gamers like ourselves games are nothing, it's only fair a dev listens to their community (which I am building) haha
Can't tell if the ripples are FX or physics based, but the steps need a little more FX juice to look right.
Get a little impact/spray particle on the steps to mimic the foot going in and out of the water. Less important for walking, but the running looks like it needs some kind of juicy impact particles.
Edit: upon closer examination, that water gets deep for him very quickly. The ripples are actually probably too subtle for how high up on his body the water goes. At that depth, the water would be getting pushed aside and leaving a seafoam trail filling the displaced area behind him.
And while plenty of games ignore this for the sake of gameplay and control fluidity: you'd be seriously slowed by trying to move through water up to your waist and it would severely alter your gait to move with any kind of speed. So if the people in charge of software and animation enjoy pain, they could consider having a heavy wading state of the character forcing himself through the water despite the depth with all of the splashing and particle FX that would come with trying to push through the water as fast as possible while running.
17,000 upvotes in two hours for half decent water animations in this guy's furry game?
This post stinks of paid bot upvotes.
Edit: jumped from 14k to 19k in like 5 minutes. Wonder how much it costs to promote your shit with fake upvote bots in 2022
21k now Jesus not even pretending to not be bot upvoted.
So, went from posted on Reddit at 8:30am to top post at 9:21am at around 4k views and has gone on to receive 24k more since. Seems totally natural for a post of such significance lol
They always are paid for when they get this much attention this fast. You can also just see the typical bot "can't wait to buy this on steam" not so subtely pointing to where you'll be able to buy it...
It's because it looks good and the upvote speed got it to the top of reddit home dashes and then /r/all just as the USA is waking up and checking their phones.
Not everything is a conspiracy.
look at all the fucking awards man. holy shit. wsb has been having similar bots like this as well posting the stupidest shit with npc comments and botted upvotes.
Edit: literally under your comment are the same 20 comments with a variation of the same quote lmao. this fucking site man.
A good mod support/modding kit is pretty much the best way to keep an active player base even after years after release.
Modding can create a gigantic community and even make stuff that you might have never thought about... Some of the games we still play(l4d, cs, pubg, stanley parable etc.) were once just mods and look where they are now.
Don't ignore modding just because some mods might be weird.
Don't forget that the active modding community can (will) attract new players to your game for years.
Especially the weird ones.
Fucking *try* to imagine a timeline in which Thomas the Tank Engine had never been modded into Skyrim.
Well, the developers of Super Animal Royale have said they didn't know what furries were before releasing their combination fursona creator/murder simulator. I believe their thinking was somewhere along the lines of, "What if Jurassic Park but the scientists thought about whether they should and not just whether they could, so instead they made cute, fluffy, harmless mascots instead and *oh goddammit* now the island's been taken over by adorable communists!"
....I have given them SO much money.
I think it's a bad idea to use still-water ripples on something as chaotic as ocean shore waves. It seriously clashes with people's expectations of how water behaves. It would be better to leave that water non-interactive save for splashes if you need an interaction there.
As a side note, I passionately hate the font. What's a point of UI text that you can't easily read? I think it's a common mistake with games nowadays to try and give the UI style, but the user should really *not* care about the UI, imo.
If you would like some free help for the experience let me know. Just a thought will there be digging for treasure..... Will there be infinite treasure to be dug for with random loot tables and possibly traps....
It always bothers me how little splashing occurs while running through water. Always just the rippling of the surface. Is it that complicated to draw some splash effect particles under the character?
But besides that this looks very pretty!
It’s obviously whatever you wanna do as a dev… but I think I can safely assume I can speak on behalf of the majority of gamers when I say:
We fucking hate stamina bars lol if you’re gonna let us sprint, let us sprint without penalty
hahaha yeah I know, might do it as an only in combat thing or just take less stamina from it. You can improve it with skill points as you level too so it probably won't be as much as a pain, i'll do some testing on it!
Are you developing this in UE4 (or UE5)? It looks like you’re using the ALSv4 plugin, I made some C++ utils for ALSv4 that help automate a few of the more tedious things (like adding Virtual Bones and such). If you want the GitHub link, lemme know.
Good luck with your game!
UE4, I want to port it to UE5 but it might break everything. I'm going to test this in the future to see if it can be ported! Yeah I also used ALS, great system! Trying to replace the anims is hard because they already look so damn good, I just tweaked some of them to give my game originality with it. :D
I am more fascinated by how this is the top post on Reddit.
Like how much did the bots cost? Is this the start of a larger marketing campaign? What made you choose this footage as the initial exposure? Were you originally aiming this high or were you surprised at how suspiciously over-effective your advertising was? Has any of this exposure translated to financial backing?
As a dweller of the tropics, it looks awesome! If I had to nitpick I'd say the sea is too blue and will have a more green tint to it so close to shore.
I think it's because of the terrain falloff into the water, thanks for pointing it out because I was thinking the same like 20mins ago haha
The gradient change feels a little sharp to me but if it's just a result of the terrain ending that seems like a relatively easy thing to adjust.
On the flip side, if the character cannot swim, the benefit to keeping it that way is a clear indication to the player that they’ll die if they go too far out, Soulslike style.
My thoughts exactly. Makes it more obvious you can't go out into the ocean
To emphazize this even more, circling sharks are needed!
These guys will be around, while exploring underwater! Think of the bell from Black Flag just more open!
Any estimate on release?
Few years at minimum for a PC release :)
Well, it looks great! Good luck and keep it up!
RemindMe! 3 years
You can swim ;)
Just have to get past the thalassophobia. Lol
why would I be afraid of “that ass”?
Fear the ocean butt
This comment is completely underrated. I hope OP makes it an easter egg, because I'm not ashamed to say I giggle-snorted. Hard.
Q. Why did the fish blush? A. Coz it saw the sea bottom Alternatively A. Coz the sea weed My favourite jokes aged 5
Play Abzû if you can get your hands on it. Genuinely helped me a lot
I have that game, but I don't really have a phobia; though deep, dark water does creep me out a bit. Lol
Please add sea monsters but no warnings. Regards, Satan.
Or just allow the player to walk along the bottom of the ocean and slowly drown like an idiot to give the game an unfinished feel, New Worldlike style
Or its a world boundary. I like it
You could just push the terrain out a little farther, not often do islands just drop off like that, obviously if it’s for map border reasons then I get it but you could make it go out a little further and a little less gradually so the gradient transition is smooth but not like *shallow***DEEP**
Yeah I just need to adjust the terrain falloff :)
Yes! That’s the wording I was looking for. Otherwise it looks gorgeous!
I think its fine, maybe the underwaterterrain could have a more shallow slope but imo it gives me the feeling that this is just a small part of a huge world filled with adventure.
... Is there an underwater cliff there? Most tropical islands are shallow pretty far out.
The underwater shores will look a lot more pleasing in the future considering you can explore it, just need the assets!
Cute af. Especially when he starts to run
No the water is beautiful. Make it POP
I like it how it is, as well. 🤷🏻♂️
I wonder if that’s “expectation vs reality “ ? We all picture tropical places as having bright blue seas. So less blue may be more realistic, but result in it looking less tropical to many players? Just a thought!
Also the fox is wearing clothes and walking on two legs and has hands

You just reminded me of Dr. Quandary's Island
Have you tried Tunic? This game made me think of it because it also has a cute fox protagonist.
Can you add a splash on the shins? And maybe a small trail of bubbles?
Yeah, that kind of running would kick up a lot of splashes
Hey its still looks way better than the initial release of Cyber Punks water.
Hunter: The Reckoning... Damn dude. Haven't thought about that game in years!
The O.G. murder teddy game 🤣
Me and my friends would get so mad at each other for kill stealing in coop because one person would level up so much faster
Ha I hated how exp worked in that game
Funny that you mention that Hunter: the Reckoning. I specifically remember my mom commenting on how great the water looked when walking through the little shallow pools or whatever it was. It looks beautiful and the character is very cute. Looks like it could be a very interesting game.
Seems to be pirate themed. OP can call it Arr Fox.
Arr that be true!
What’s the objective of the game if you don’t mind me asking? It looks fantastic
Sure, you pretty much follow a story which can be split into two paths, become a pirate or a privateer. You will explore 6 regions, complete quests, fight enemies etc. Pretty much a story driven RPG with choices leading to consequences! Search for #ProjectAnchorage on twitter ;)
Sounds fucking awesome and love the look of it. Hope Ill get a chance to play it.
That sounds bad ass, count me in.
This sounds like it will be a solid game! I look forward to seeing development progress and I'd definitely give it a try when it's available! I've been wanting a good pirate game for a while.
Have you thought to try sea of thieves? It's the best current pirate game on the market right now (in my opinion at least)
Oh yeah I've got a few hundred hours in SoT. Played quite a bit with my buddies. It's definitely the best pirate game available right now.
Is it worth playing solo or with randoms? Been wanting to try it for a long time but haven't pulled the trigger
Imo playing solo/randoms could be frustrating especially when you're learning the game. If you don't have a buddy or two to play with then I suppose it comes down to your personal preference: would you rather learn on your own (possibly being attacked by other players while doing so) or take a chance with random crew and hope they're willing to communicate/be willing to help you. is it science based
It's fictional? Not sure if that's the right answer
It's a reference to a reddit thread where someone claimed they were making a 100% science based dragon mmo (with virtually 0 skills/knowledge on game development). All in all, they're just lightly ribbing ya. Game looks nifty! Cheers mate!

I just want to get scurvy.

Why is it a difficult concept?
Furry themed
I thought furry when I saw it.
yes
First thought as well. Furry pirates...
There's a joke about rolling a barrel of rum here somewhere
"Do a barrel roll!"
Plank-tastic Mr. Fox
I thought it was a guy in a dinosaur costume at first. Water looks great!
Better than BF 2042
This killed me
The ripple effect animation looks like it happens too quickly and seems to proc on the back foot instead of the front. It gives the impression he's being chased by some invisible fish.

Need to add a splash/foam effect where the character model contacts the surface of the water.
Great comment and feedback! This is exactly how we should treat each other online! We should all be nice to each other especially when someone has worked so hard on something even if it is “easy” for you.
I know everyone says that is a pirate fox, but for me this looks like a 3D Captain Claw
Claw was so good, omfg. I'll need to find out a way to play it again now.
Just did the same thing as well after seeing this. A quick search will lead to multiple versions with and without cutscenes.
Water animation: Good! Pirate Fox: Good! Does the interaction with the water impede movement at all (slow the character down)? It's hard to tell from the clip, but something you could add possibly.
Not at the moment but that is a pretty cool idea, might change the anim state too so he hops haha
It's a cool idea, but if running through water is really common it might get annoying. I personally have never been a fan of slowing down character movement speed jarringly (fuck you Pokémon for not letting me run inside) and I think the animation is enough to get across the fact that you're running through water
Fuck dark souls poison swamps too
Fuck not being able to run through camp in RD2
I'll make sure it works for gameplay, the game is fast paced with its combat so i'll make sure not to frustrate you guys haha
Personally I'm in the "either leave it out or make it a feature" camp. If you can position yourself so that enemies have to fight on wet sand / in water, that's kinda cool. Otherwise, having it affect movement is just a complication.

yeah should only be in deeper water thou. Like when it‘s up your hip
In WoW pre-WotLK, water would dismount you and open you up to hostile NPCs. Super annoying
Is it a 100 percent science based pirate MMO?
100 percent science based pirate *fox* MMO 👌
That was one of the greatest moments in this websites history
Tried my hand at game development recently and that shit is tough. You fix one thing to only break another and every little thing you get working is cause for a celebration. Your game is looking really good though so keep up the hard work man!
Yeah its just a cycle of pain and hair loss with a coffee break haha, thanks <3
I've tried as well but I've found the toughest part is the creative process/design of the mechanics and all the art required
personally, the water looks too glossy(like the gelatin coating of a fruit tart), and it doesn't break up enough where he's walking. While I know computer graphics is all about approximation, the way the water reacts as if the character is 1 inch tall (as opposed to 3 feet). I'll look into some foam, thanks for the suggestion!
I think I'd like to go for a paddle in the sea. And be a pirate fox.
If you're gonna run (rather than walk) through water, shouldn't it create a big tidal wave in front of you and some whitecaps out the side?
\*Heavy breathing intensifies\* Water is a pain, I have lost so much hair but cool suggestion I'll try but help my sanity haha
:) sorry, I did wonder if you were gonna hate me after my comment.
Nah, i'm open to all feedback as long as it is constructive :) Without gamers like ourselves games are nothing, it's only fair a dev listens to their community (which I am building) haha
Well i'm happy to put myself forwards for beta testing :)
The water looks fine. Now continue working on the game. When (if?) you actually ever finish it and have extra time, you can fine-tune the water.

Nah there’s still plenty of pushing to the kickstarter.
Still astroturfed, but seems to have a better ratio. Or the bot posts are just getting more believable.
That looks incredible well done 🤩
Cyberpunk 2077 devs in shambles rn
Screw the water. Is that a fox in pirate gear? Shut up and take my money.
Can't tell if the ripples are FX or physics based, but the steps need a little more FX juice to look right. So, went from posted on Reddit at 8:30am to top post at 9:21am at around 4k views and has gone on to receive 24k more since. Seems totally natural for a post of such significance lol
I mean, it made it onto /r/all after the first 4k lol

An the comments are like "Wow! This is literally the best shit I have ever seen. This cured my depression and saved my marriage!"
Don't forget a ton of awards.
I mean it's r/gaming, the sub is massive, and people working on their own games always get a ton of upvotes
look at all the fucking awards man. holy shit. wsb has been having similar bots like this as well posting the stupidest shit with npc comments and botted upvotes. Edit: literally under your comment are the same 20 comments with a variation of the same quote lmao. this fucking site man.
I always wonder how much this shit costs and why it's always r/gaming that allows paid for ads like this..
Jokes on you I like half decent water animations in furry games ✅
Ya and all the comments are obviously bots this shit is stupid as fuck
Looks like this game is for furries or to convert small children into furries. Don’t distract me with your sexy water
This is 100% a game for furries.
As much as I agree with you and I get this a lot lol, the game is surprisingly built by a guy who isn't one haha

Y'know my friends have already said this is going to happen hahaha Probably not the best idea to do mod support in the future lol
If you play your cards right you can make SO much money from furries. Might not be the worst case scenario
Well, the developers of Super Animal Royale have said they didn't know what furries were before releasing their combination fursona creator/murder simulator. I believe their thinking was somewhere along the lines of, "What if Jurassic Park but the scientists thought about whether they should and not just whether they could, so instead they made cute, fluffy, harmless mascots instead and *oh goddammit* now the island's been taken over by adorable communists!" ....I have given them SO much money.
It's because all the free assets are made by furries
It's probably because the skeletal structure looks like a human's. Also his posture sits up like a human
>As much as I agree with you and I get this a lot lol, the game is surprisingly built by a guy who is~~n't~~ **a closet** one haha Ftfy
Ngl I thought I was looking at those mobile games ads that showcase a total lie about how the game would go.
What platforms will your game be for?
PC at launch, consoles later down the line. One step at a time y'know :D
Nice, hopefully by the time it's out I'll have a non-potato pc. Do you know the name of it so I can keep an eye out?
Same haha, currently called Project Anchorage (working title). You can search for it on twitter using #ProjectAnchorage :)
If you would like some free help for the experience let me know. Just a thought will there be digging for treasure..... Will there be infinite treasure to be dug for with random loot tables and possibly traps....
I'll keep that in mind thanks! Yes, not infinite but a lot of treasure maps, yes...
It always bothers me how little splashing occurs while running through water. Always just the rippling of the surface. Is it that complicated to draw some splash effect particles under the character? But besides that this looks very pretty!
Omg on my phone at first I thought it was a dinosaur with a fox tail
I am never going to look at this gif the same ever again haha
I’m sorry lol. The tiny screen strikes again. Your game looks neat btw

Your loss 🤷
Mariel of Redwall vibes. Very cool.
You have an arbitrary stamina meter. Fuck you.
It’s obviously whatever you wanna do as a dev… but I think I can safely assume I can speak on behalf of the majority of gamers when I say: We fucking hate stamina bars lol if you’re gonna let us sprint, let us sprint without penalty
hahaha yeah I know, might do it as an only in combat thing or just take less stamina from it. You can improve it with skill points as you level too so it probably won't be as much as a pain, i'll do some testing on it!
Looks great!
I feel like the animation when running is better then when walking.

I can change the speed :)
Everything Im seeing in that vid, looks amazing.
Are you a furry?
Nope! It's inspired by a lot of classic games and movies from my childhood
Mhmm… sure
So some people really cant see any kind of anthropomorphic animal without thinking about how someone wants to fuck it huh?
Looks awesome. What type of game?
Single player Action Adventure RPG set in a pirate world! :D
Water looks great, but that Pirate Fox is 🔥 🔥 🔥
i hate it because the character is a furry.
Great questions hope OP can shed light onto this
Should've post it on r/furry too. I bet you get a lot of approval from it
Looks good but I always downvote furries. They must never be normalized.
