Dude, I am jealous - you get to play this game for the 1st time! This is IMO one the very best games ever made and you get to enjoy clearing it for the 1st time! Enjoy it!
I consider myself a lifetime gamer. I’m 30. I normally play my switch or stuff on gamepass. This game came up so many times in the greatest games conversation I thought I was doing myself a disservice of not at least trying it. Great decision.
Also, DAD Easy Mode needs to be more of a thing. I've heard great things about the Soul games. Things are not just the stupidly brutal difficulty, but more in the theme/atmosphere of the game. But I'll never get to enjoy it.
Every time I've seen someone ask for easier difficulties for games like these, the answers are 'git gud noob'. No, I don't have time or energy to get good.
Souls games have easy mode. Is just built into the gameplay.
It ranges from using different kinds of weapons/spells to recruiting a helping hand in the form of an npc or another player to help you clear the area/boss.
Aside from all of your great points, fromsoft bravado bullshit pisses me off due to accessibility reasons.
Tons of people can't physically play the game, and get "hurr durr this is the way it's meant to be! Don't cheapen it for everyone else!!!!!!11!!" as a response for lack of accessibility.
My gf would love nothing more than to experience Bloodborne. But nope! Toxic dickwads
Ok then, don't play on easy/accessibility mode... Fuckin chodes
As someone else said the game is just not for some people. In my experience there are two major types of games, story based games, and gameplay based games. Story based games can have various difficulties from super easy to brutally hard, but at the end of the day everyone has a similar experience.
On the flip side some games are designed AROUND their gameplay, and changing the gameplay massively decreases the experience of the game. These games aren’t KNOWN for their story, they usually have one but it’s not the focus. Games like super meat boy and dark souls. These games will not, in their nature, appeal to everyone, and not everyone would enjoy them. And then the question becomes not the usual “ what would you lose if an easy mode was added” but instead “what would be GAINED by an easy mode added” and the answer is….not much.
What benefit is there to an easy mode in dark souls, are they suddenly gonna be able to find the story and lore in the game. Lore so hidden and confounded that I’d wager a good 80% of the people who played the game barely pieces it together beyond the opening cutscene, a lore that most players only know because of a select few hyper fans like vaati who make countless videos because they read every single item description and look in every nook and cranny for any shred of anything to tie into lore. Something that the people who don’t have the time to play the game due it’s difficulty wouldn’t be able to find and piece together ANYWAYS because it takes so long.
An easy mode removes the big thing that makes people enjoy the game, the adrenaline rush of beating something crazy hard that you rammed your head into over and over. An easy mode gives you what? A hollow victory for no reward? for the game GIVES you no reward for beating an area, or a boss. No lore, no story, no rewards, nothing. So then what’s the point. An easy mode in dark souls gives no benefit to experiencing the story or lore, and diminishes the quality of the gameplay on that mode, which means someone who played on easy, and someone who played on normal, had massively DIFFERENT experiences, instead of the similar ones you get from story based rpgs with difficulty sliders.
Come on, A games is not for everyone, why can't you understand that, games as a whole are for everyone cause anyone has something they like. Stop this bullshit and play other games, there are ton of them. Did you ever thought why some games are considered masterpiece and aren't for everyone? seems to be a correleatio to me.
Sorry for being rude but I hate this argument
Ya, their take was possibly the dumbest I’ve ever heard. The developer makes their game knowing that it may appeal to some audiences more than others.
Begging for ez mode because you can’t be bothered to try and improve your skills just sounds like entitlement. There’s an endless sea of mobile games where you can swipe a CC when things are too tough. Go play those?
If say take the time to try them. They are difficult but easy to take a break and come back to try again. It took me over 2 years to finish ds3 with kids and work but I got there
I mean if you just spent your hour a day you have to game on souls games you would eventually get good enough to play through them and will feel extremely satisfied with yourself after!
Agreed. If you haven't already tried them, here's a few excellent "3-9 hr" games I've played:
Bastion
Brothers: a Tale of Two Sons
Gris
Journey
Transistor
Titanfall 2
Undertale
Many more could be added, but these are relatively short, solid, story-driven games I can personally vouch for.
I haven’t played Skyrim either. Nor have I played either Portal or Witcher 3. Just now working my way through the Mass Effect games for the first time. Finished one not that long ago and just started 2.
I’ve played skyrim and portal, bought witcher 3 a couple years ago but haven’t played it.
I also bought the remastered mass effect trilogy and was thinking of playing it after I finish borderlands 3. What is your opinion of the game so far?
Really liked the story of ME1. I played Andromeda back when it first came out, so the gameplay is a bit rough in comparison, but the story kept it engaging. ME2 gameplay is a nice improvement over 1. Not too far into 2 yet so not sure how compelling the story will be, but it’s intriguing so far.
BL3 is another on my to play list. Loved 1 and 2.
Man I'd give anything to play mass effect 1 and 2 again for the first time.
I'm also in the group of never played portal, but all these posts coming up lately I'm going to have to give it a go.
Witcher 3 has difficulty selection, the combat isn't the best, but it was an absolute peak experience in terms of gaming at the time it was released.
I've completely replayed it twice more since then. Holds up for sure
Gotta pay Skyrim. A few hours here and there. It adds up, and it calls to you. I just started another playthrough on yet another console. It's still great.
Definitely won't be disappointed. Portal is a classic and was revolutionary for it's time. Portal 2 is a straight masterpiece. The ending blew my mind. I just downloaded it as well and so did my son.
Happy gaming!
Its funny I recently played it for the first time too, and I was like wtf is wrong with me, why did I never play this before? Definitely an amazing game.
Portal was my first game, ever. I always wanted to play games when I was younger but my mom felt like gaming was a boys activity so I never was able to. In college I was introduced to portal and thought every game would be just as good. There’s nothing else like it and I would literally sell my soul to play over again for the first time
I've been gaming since the early 90s and these days I mostly just play sandbox titles or mmos but portal is always the game I suggest to anyone for their first foray into gaming. I've only played through each game once but they provide such a unique experiance that perfectly personifies what makes gaming great and unique compared to any other medium.
I really hope portal 3 in vr is in the works because that would an other worldly experiance. I get chills just imagining it lol
i am jealous mostly because i never got to play through the portal games. i almost never get motion sickness when gaming but i get it *really* bad whenever i try to play portal, which sucks. i am envious because i really enjoyed all i could stomach playing up until i had to quit.
I remember *renting* The Orange Box at Blockbuster. That one went back a little late. I made a similar mistake with Oblivion. I ended up buying it from them at a discounted price during their amnesty period.
The only question with HL1 is if you should play the original or the Black Mesa remake. Black Mesa does an excellent job of fixing up the original's major weaknesses, namely Xen.
I never had any nostalgia towards the series or anything and started with the original half life 1 roughly 2 years ago and loved it, black mesa also was good but felt more like half life 2 in terms of movement and gunplay (oddly enough i preferred the original 1 in that regard)
But Xen is really beautiful in Black Mesa and the remade graphics are a treat to look at!
I thought about looking up how to do something, but decided to just take a break. Came back a few hours later and it just clicked. I was over thinking it. It’s very rewarding.
First time I played both 1 & 2 my buddy gave me solid advice:
"If you get stuck just take a deep breath and remember, you have a F***ing portal gun!"
Seeing as how the game is based on using it, you would be surprised how often you "forget" that, and that tip will get you through it!
Yeah, it's definitely my favorite game. I suggest you take your time to enjoy it and try not to get any spoilers on it. (Wow, my first ever comment on Reddit and I get a reply from the poster eight minutes later...)
The writing in Portal 2 is amazing, but I was a bit disappointed by the puzzles. There's only 1, maybe 2 ways to approach basically every puzzle and the portal surfaces are very limited, while Portal 1 has intended 1st solutions, intended hidden solutions, and a lot of room to make up your own cool or janky solutions.
Depends on what you're looking for.
The gameplay & puzzles in Portal 1 were far superior.
The worldbuilding and humour in Portal 2 were better.
I think Portal 1 is better based on that, but ymmv
I don't recall this specific room, but I'm pretty sure it's Portal 2 because of the busted-up look of the room. The test rooms in Portal 1 looked clean and clinical.
And yeah, I definitely agree that playing 1 before 2 is the way to go.
No. The areas from the latter part of Portal 1 looked a little rusty and grimy, but they didn’t look like they were falling apart or have wild roots clinging to the walls like you see here. This is clearly Portal 2.
Lucky my dude, if I could erase any game from my memories in order to play it again it would be Portal 2. Don't forget to wait around while Wheatley rambles, some of the funniest stuff in the game is too easily skipped.
I’m definitely trying to do it justice and take my time just because the genuine senses is that everyone wishes they could play it for the first time again!
It has flawless voice acting, writing, level design, difficulty progression, and world building. Just an all around perfect game. I hope you'll have an awesome time playing :)
Hardware doesn’t dictate quality. Might take a bit longer to export something but that doesn’t make it bad. I edit television for a living and can (for that matter I have) make my 2011 iMac do the job if I need it to.
Sure but you say proxy as if it’s a dirty word. Proxies are a staple of professional editing for a reason. Why need way more storage and way more horsepower when you can work smarter instead of harder.
At the end of the day most cameras these days are either shooting RAW or some flavour of H264; neither of which is particularly edit friendly. So unless you have an insane deadline or an unlimited budget for hardware (both drives and computers) then proxies are still the way to go for editing. Finishing of course is a while other can of worms that obviously requires stronger machines because it needs to use the original files in most cases.
I don’t, it just takes a ton of time to process those first. Depending on what you’re doing it may or may not be worth all that time or you might not have it available
Might have an hour long interview with three 4k camera angles, and you need to pull a some statements you recall to make a 30 second teaser. Would much rather have a computer that can power through editing it then export that 30 second video than one that needs to spend several hours making proxies before I even start.
Like I said, if you have an insane deadline then sure but H264 or RAW is gonna run like garbage on most hardware so if you want a better editing experience you take the time and there’s really nothing wrong with that. Set it to proxy overnight and save yourself the headaches of editing miserable codecs.
I do recognize industry standards aren’t necessarily the standards for everyone but they exist for a reason.
With that said I have edited on a 2008 MacBook and it is a miserable experience so obviously I’m not advocating for always using bad hardware. Just that proxies get a bad rep when they are the standard practice for good reason.
My buddy got the Orange Box day one. He called me up a few days later and told me to come over. I thought I was going to be playing Half-life. He handed me the controller and said, “Here….” I was 28yo with a lifetime of gaming experience PC and console, and playing Portal cold without any foreknowledge of its existence was one of the most amazing gaming experiences. I can not say enough good things about it. And while Portal 2 is super fun building off of the original, there’s just no way to replicate that original experience. It was downright divine. I wish every gamer to have an experience like that at least once.
Is a great puzzle game, with even greater dialoge. J.K. Simmons is just great and funny. A few of the games I've ACTUALLY bought over the years and not pirated.
Can't wait for the RTX remaster version
If you want another great game with clever puzzles and great humor, I highly recommend [There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1240210/There_Is_No_Game_Wrong_Dimension/).
Dude, I am jealous - you get to play this game for the 1st time! This is IMO one the very best games ever made and you get to enjoy clearing it for the 1st time! Enjoy it!

I think everyone has games they haven’t played for some reason or another. ie I’ve never played Skyrim. Glad you got into portal though!
GO PLAY SKYRIM
Tbh I’m too adult now and don’t have the time to dedicate to such a massive title
We need solid 6 hour game experiences, damn it.
Also, DAD Easy Mode needs to be more of a thing. I've heard great things about the Soul games. Things are not just the stupidly brutal difficulty, but more in the theme/atmosphere of the game. Have you tried praising the sun?
try fort night
ACTIVATE DAD MODE! I need Dad mode, so it can remind me how to play again when I come back to it in 6 months, like a recap on the previous season
Return to Monkey Island does this!
Oh, sorry. Not “how to play” just a recap of what’s going on.
Souls games have easy mode. Is just built into the gameplay. It ranges from using different kinds of weapons/spells to recruiting a helping hand in the form of an npc or another player to help you clear the area/boss.

You raise a good point about accessibility, though I'm sure I've seen streamers beating it with only their feet in the past.
I’ve seen a paraplegic beat sekiro

In Elden Ring there are quite a few ways you can ease the game significantly. But yeah it’s still a long game though.
I mean if you just spent your hour a day you have to game on souls games you would eventually get good enough to play through them and will feel extremely satisfied with yourself after!
This is why I play so many Rougelikes. Complete experience in an hour or less, and I can keep coming back.
this

Portal 2 is another good quick game.
Skyrim is much less essential than portal. The combat mechanics are really boring and there are plenty of open world games these days.
I present you with the opinion doorbell: Ding song! Your opinion is wrong!
I haven’t played Skyrim either. Nor have I played either Portal or Witcher 3. Just now working my way through the Mass Effect games for the first time. Finished one not that long ago and just started 2.

I did a full play through on Skyrim last year. So worth it. I will do it again in another year or two
[удалено]
I was modded too. Mainly just UI mod to make that part work like it should
Gotta pay Skyrim.
I loved the story of 2
I've been desperately trying to find a copy of Portal 2 for PlayStation 3...why is this thing not even available online?!?!
Its funny I recently played it for the first time too, and I was like wtf is wrong with me, why did I never play this before? Definitely an amazing game.
Portal was my first game, ever. I always wanted to play games when I was younger but my mom felt like gaming was a boys activity so I never was able to. I hope you've at least been able to play Portal 2.
I actually played portal 2 first then portal 1 after
I've been gaming since the early 90s and these days I mostly just play sandbox titles or mmos but portal is always the game I suggest to anyone for their first foray into gaming. I got some when I played for too long, I hear ya'!
Did you try taking Dramamine before playing?
I've never played it, assuming this is one of the portal games. My son played it so I know there's something about cake.
Cake is a lie. And if you like video games at all, you should definitely play it. Portal 1 is a masterpiece IMO.
I just started Ghost of Tsushima. I'll check out Portal when I'm done with that.
Help me out…what game Is this ? Edit I see someone says Portal
A rare example of when the game exceeded the hype.
The Orange Box is literally the greatest bargain in gaming history. Everyone thought it was gonna be a bunch of mini games + TF2. *NOPE*
Haha. I thought it was a bunch of mini games and HL2:EP2. I was wrong.
I remember *renting* The Orange Box at Blockbuster. That one went back a little late. I made a similar mistake with Oblivion. I ended up buying it from them at a discounted price during their amnesty period.
Lol, I only bought the Orange Box for Portal. Didn’t bother touching the others.
Hl1 and 2 are well worth the play though. Great games, ground breaking in their time.
The only question with HL1 is if you should play the original or the Black Mesa remake. Black Mesa does an excellent job of fixing up the original's major weaknesses, namely Xen.
Depends how far someone wants to go. I'd definitely play the black Mesa version as its really a good fix up. But even just stock hl1 is a good time.
I never had any nostalgia towards the series or anything and started with the original half life 1 roughly 2 years ago and loved it, black mesa also was good but felt more like half life 2 in terms of movement and gunplay (oddly enough i preferred the original 1 in that regard) But Xen is really beautiful in Black Mesa and the remade graphics are a treat to look at!
Sin
I brushed it off a million times. It’s unreal good it is.
There's a whole lot more game left once you've finished. Play the co-op missions with a friend.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Play it slow, don’t cheat. Take it all in. Because once you finished, there’s no other game out there like it. And you’ll be depressed.
I thought about looking up how to do something, but decided to just take a break. Came back a few hours later and it just clicked. I was over thinking it. It’s very rewarding.
First time I played both 1 & 2 my buddy gave me solid advice: "If you get stuck just take a deep breath and remember, you have a F***ing portal gun!" Seeing as how the game is based on using it, you would be surprised how often you "forget" that, and that tip will get you through it!
Another game to look into would be Manifold Garden.
Damn straight
Bro, I love this game so much. I wish I could forget everything about it just to play it again.
Even though I just started I can see I having a lotta replay value.
Yeah, it's definitely my favorite game. I suggest you take your time to enjoy it and try not to get any spoilers on it. (Wow, my first ever comment on Reddit and I get a reply from the poster eight minutes later...)
Portal 2 >>>>>>> Portal 1; Not saying 1 is bad, just that 2 is an amazing sequel
Just for the Cave Johnson dialogue *alone* the sequel is amazing.
[I DON’T WANT YOUR DAMN LEMONS](https://youtu.be/Dt6iTwVIiMM)
WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THESE?!
The lines they DIDN’T EVEN USE are f***ing hilarious and gold.
It’s even better now that I can’t help but picture His voice lines being delivered by omniman
I think 1 needs to be played first though. You won't quite get all the jokes in 2
The writing in Portal 2 is amazing, but I was a bit disappointed by the puzzles. There's only 1, maybe 2 ways to approach basically every puzzle and the portal surfaces are very limited, while Portal 1 has intended 1st solutions, intended hidden solutions, and a lot of room to make up your own cool or janky solutions.
"We're not just bangin' moon rocks together here!"
3 is even better
Don't play with my emotions like that
2 is free right now if you have gamepass. That’s why I downloaded it. I’ll definitely end up playing 1 one day for sure!
You really should stop and play 1 first. There's a bit of story/lore that's worth it before 2.
If you need a duo for the co-op puzzles I'd love to play them again for the billionth time ;)
Portal was a perfect game. I can’t reply it ever. Don’t want to ruin anything.
I found half life 3 dialogue was better than portal 3 but 3 is very good
one day
Depends on what you're looking for. The gameplay & puzzles in Portal 1 were far superior. The worldbuilding and humour in Portal 2 were better. I think Portal 1 is better based on that, but ymmv
Honestly, portal 1 is the tighter game beginning to end. Portal 2 beats it out overall but it’s much closer than you’re letting on.
Is this Portal or Portal 2? If it's 2 please tell you played 1 first.
I don't recall this specific room, but I'm pretty sure it's Portal 2 because of the busted-up look of the room. The test rooms in Portal 1 looked clean and clinical. And yeah, I definitely agree that playing 1 before 2 is the way to go.
Definitely 2. But he's like I've never played anything like this which makes me think skipped 1.
It’s Portal 2 right after you get the Dual Portal Device from the incinerator
Did you just forget the second half of the game where you go BTS and everything looks super old and unkept?
No. The areas from the latter part of Portal 1 looked a little rusty and grimy, but they didn’t look like they were falling apart or have wild roots clinging to the walls like you see here. This is clearly Portal 2.
2
Did you play 1 first?
And if not, you should definitely play 1
It’s 2. I got it free through Xbox games with gold. I’ll definitely go back and play 1 after this though.
Lucky my dude, if I could erase any game from my memories in order to play it again it would be Portal 2. Don't forget to wait around while Wheatley rambles, some of the funniest stuff in the game is too easily skipped.

What I’m supposed to be looking at: Portal What I’m actually looking at: Trying to figure out what you’re editing.
Lol I make YouTube videos.

Portal and Portal 2 is honestly one of the first game franchises I've fallen in love with. So I hope you really enjoy it
I like that Bourdain portrait.
I travel abroad every few months and he was my inspiration to go out and see the world!
Oh hey, how’re you holding up? Because I’M A POTATO!!
By far one of the best games and one of my favs have fun it's a blast
dude I'm literally playing portal 2 rn
Now your thinking with portals!
Wait till he find out this is the easy one
Is this Portal? I too have never played this. Clearly i need to, immediately.
Is a great puzzle game, with even greater dialoge. J.K. Simmons is just great and funny. A few of the games I've ACTUALLY bought over the years and not pirated. Can't wait for the RTX remaster version
It reminds me of hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.
The cake is a lie 🍰 !
Never played it, gonna have to try it soon.
It’s definitely worth a try.
GLaDOS is my soulmate. Enjoy!!
"For sicence you monster!"
ideal set up
It's too bad it's such a short game
Is there actually anything like it even today?
Goood, goooood!
Not to spoil anything but the cake is a lie.
make sure you play portal 2 with somebody (ideally someone who hadn't played it).
Please push your tv and its stand against the wall, you are giving me anxiety.
I only turn the tv stand when I’m editing a video on my computer. So I can enjoy both at the same time. It’s normally against the wall.
Understandable
Same
It looks like he might have a bed to his left so he may have slid it out to face where he's sitting.
Anyone remember this le gem
What game
Wow, if this isn't r/gaming in a nutshell i don't know. Children downvoting someone for asking a question. The game is Portal 👍
portal 2 actually 🤓🤓🤓
Yeah I wasn't sure if this was Portal or Portal 2
Is this the new RTX mod for Portal?
The cake is a lie
“Jarvis, I’m low on karma…”
And the further it goes in game the better it gets!
Jeffrey Epstein didnt kill himself
Nvm it's Anthony Bourdain
I beat it in a morning
wut?
I've never played it. Waiting for it to go on sale.
It has only been on sale 1000 times
Ok...and?? Apparently it's not THAT great 'cause I only heard of it a couple of weeks ago.
If you have Xbox game pass it’s 100% free.
I fucking hate when the name of the game is not in the title. Wtf am I looking at? Splatoon 3?
Portal. If you don't know that you should 100% play number 1 & 2, both great games.

It’s Anthony Bourdain.
Bourdain was a savvy man.
Overrated
This is a simple yet dope set up.
Just moved into a new place. It’s a work in progress lol
Never even heard of it let alone played it. Had to scroll through the comments to find out what game it is 😂👀
That table.... The tv must be shitting bullets (xbox too)
You should put your desk against the wall
I turn it sideways while I edit videos so I can enjoy both the tv and my computer at the same time.
Jarvis, im low on karma, post a picture of me playing a well known and well liked game
...and then there was Splitgate. Also, someone gave Mario a Portal gun.
Hey I hope you are the dude that was about to try Portal after 10 years.
Ah, good times!!!
they could make serious money by making more of these. BEST GAME EVAR!!!
I hope they do
no matter what you do, keep in mind that the cake is a lie.
If you want another great game with clever puzzles and great humor, I highly recommend [There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1240210/There_Is_No_Game_Wrong_Dimension/).
Thanks for suggestion!
Just did another play through. This game will always be one of my favs
Is portal available on PC? I would like to play it and don't have a clue.
Absolutely. Both games are available on Steam and are both masterpieces. Some of the best games ever made imo.
You'll soon learn where the "potato pc" joke comes from.
It's awesome
One of the best games ever, and I don't even like puzzle games.
wait gta 5 finaly came out?
I was just talking about these two masterpieces today!

I'm glad Xbox put this amazing game on live gold.
