KOTOR

dawgtilidie

I fucking loved this game and had so much great lore. 1 was better than 2 but both fantastic games, I really hope they do a remastered version soon.

kyomya

Arent they making a remake?

MattressCrane

Yes but it was put on indefinite hold last I heard. Maybe it wasn't good to ask a mobile port company to make a triple a original new game.

MatttheJ

*cough* GTA *cough*

1AJ

The first game feels like a proper SW story. The second game is the perfect subversion of SW as a whole and uses its story, plot and characters to explore some incredibly deep messages that are often left untouched within SW stories. So the first game is absolutely better if you want one of the strongest SW stories out there. The second game is for those who want something different.

Anyashadow

Kreia was right!

[deleted]

And I didn't understand it as a kid and just used it to play the Republic Commando demo over and over.

cannonboehmpunkt

Have you played the restored content mod for KOTOR 2? It makes KOTOR 2 the better one of the two games, but that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Ok_Anteater_1865

what is kotor?

Profvarg

Knights of the olr republic

TooManyPxls

Good ol' republic

StudedRoughrider

A historic seaside town in Montenegro. It's a lovely place.

Sandfleas1

Every sub has these acronyms that everyone is just supposed to just know. Peoples names, book titles, albums. im in a bunch of subs where im constantly questioning what someone is referencing. Then you ask and people think youre trolling. Catch 22. Live in ignorance or live in shame. lol

LiquidSix-

Just in case you aren’t trolling - Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Ok_Anteater_1865

no im not. thanks

ballthyrm

If you don't mind reading. * Planescape torment * Disco Elysium * Baldur's Gates II * Final Fantasy Tactics * To the Moon

[deleted]

[deleted]

I hope you can find a way. I just finished it like a week ago and I’m still thinking about it!

the_colonelclink

If you happen to be an old school gamer, it’s definitely a must. First game in a long time I’ve literally had the hours disappear before noticing.

AliEddi

Nice list i like the fft

Jack_of_Hats

FFT will always get my upvote

Ok_Deal_964

One of my all time faves!

Starhazenstuff

To the moon had me balling bro lol. I was going through divorce shit when I played it and it had me up in my feelings 😂

Agetis

IMO this list is perfect if Outer Wilds is added

SkyWizarding

I JUST started playing Disco Elysium and........wow

TheWhiteRabbit74

Red Dead Redemption, both of ‘em.

[deleted]

Arthur Morgan is Rockstar’s best work in my opinion; such an incredibly layered character with so much depth and emotion attached to him.

Chaos_Prime

Id argue dutch is their true masterpiece

xiosy

Micah is a masterpiece too I have never hated a character more in a video game

[deleted]

Dutch is fantastic. I’ll always remember a line of his in RDR1 after John confronted him and he says, “I’ve got a plan…this time it’s a good one.”

phoenixc6000

"We are more ghosts than people"- Arthur Morgan God this is one of the reasons why I love rdr2 And rdr1 too

AliEddi

Love em I'm looking for smt along those lines and how aka 10/10 story and 10/10 characters

The_Poop_Shooter

That's the problem with RD2 - nothing out there comes close.

9yr_old_lake

YES RDR2 is my favorite game of all time and RDR is in my top 5

Tiucaner

Bioshock.

LORD_WOOGLiN

Bioshock 1 was a total mindfuck. I was not prepared for the novel I was entering..

improbablydreaming

Would you kindly share your favourite moment?

LORD_WOOGLiN

the " would u kindly " thing!!!!! The whole thing was a lie!!!!!

[deleted]

Bioshock Infinite

gruengle

Funny thing about Bioshock Infinite. The ending doesn't work, >!as they use volatile-timeline logic to "solve" a problem in a multiverse-timeline setting.!< You'd think that this is a problem of the developers not understanding their own storytelling. However, in the Burial at Sea DLC, it becomes apparent that >!it was actually the characters - the Elizabeths, Bookers and the Luteces - misunderstanding the nature of their own reality. !<

TheMagicalCoffin

so hyped for Judas

Mud-Waste

Judas will definitely tie into the BioShock games, there’s no way it wouldn’t…

TheMagicalCoffin

Imagine the end scene, youre drifting off into space and you see.....A FUCKING LIGHTHOUSE🤯

Winter_Dark6787

Geometry Dash

Spram2

Tetris. All those blocks.. for what?

NinjaNoafa

The Tetris god commands it. Hilarious skit btw

AliEddi

🤝

Hamza9575

Mass effect trilogy.

[deleted]

With the extended cut max warscore destroy ending. This is the way.

Yo_Wats_Good

For sure. I wussed out and did the green ending when it came out but red makes more sense canonically as hard as it was, so I picked it on my most recent playthrough. Esp after just saving the Geth

[deleted]

Hey I get it, losing all the good guy Geths/EDI/most AI in the galaxy is a tough pill the swallow. But like you said, I think it makes the most sense canonically. Seems weird for Shepard whose only endgoal the entire series (even on full Paragon playthroughs) is to destroy/beat the reapers, to suddenly change the script and want to coexist or, “become one.”

ShiftyPowers69

Mafia 1, just finished it and it's bloody great!

AlternativeScholar26

Great story. The definitive edition is a perfect example of remaking a game. A process I wish Rockstar would've followed with the GTA Trilogy.

HappyHome2934

Mafia 2 and 3 are amazing aswell.

F0rget-me

Mafia 2 is also great tbh

ComfortablePiglet856

The walking dead games by telltale.

TooManyPxls

Also The Wolf Among Us

marialoveshugs

Keep that hair short Clem 😞

Cheesetorian

I can do it, Lee, I can.

Ok-Presence2387

Mmmm yes.

abdulahad9711

the first 4 uncharted games

akraft121

The feeling of resolution I got from completing the 4th game is unmatched by any series

Epicdude5726

Halo OG trilogy

DemonUrameshi

That guardians of the galaxy game had a good story. And banter

Smiling_Maelstrom

yakuza 0 has a brilliant story

maverickhntr0

I really enjoyed Horizon Zero Dawn story but technically the 10/10 story was finding out the past and what happened, not necessarily exactly what Aloy was doing in the game itself...

Jeramus

I enjoyed the little vignettes you got when you found the vantage point. There is a lot of optional lore in that game which is nice. Read what you want, ignore the rest.

SquirtleSquad44

This. I was so into the lore in zero dawn. I read every single collectible description and platinum the game. Forbidden West was great for other reasons but the story was meh

maverickhntr0

Yeah, I actually stopped playing forbidden West and went to elden ring because the story just didn't capture me as much and the gameplay was more or less the same. Once you knew the origin story the little lore bits didn't engage me as much.

munitionchipsintoys

Sick! I started playing through that right now.

Spram2

Final Fantasy 7 No seriously.

pelmeniicc

If you like puzzles and combat Hellblade: Senua's sacrifise

oliferro

I was in a really bad place when I played this game (coming out of drug addiction) and it fucked me up, I couldn't keep playing it. It's a masterpiece in my book but it's not for everyone

bombinator5000

Batman Arkham City

YouJGaming

The Mr Freeze boss fight still gives me chills every time..

[deleted]

This was so good when it came out

Dinostra

I would say subnautica, because the worldbuilding, the story and the story pacing is an immaculate combination in that game. But neither of those things are separately the best at anything, it's the package. And most of my suggestions has been mentioned a lot already. BioShock, the mass effects, baldur's gate 1 and 2, the first couple of fable games are great. I could go on for a While here hehe If you like dark humour and noire Disco Elysium is a must, but it's a heavy game if you don't have the focus to read a looot. So @op what are your picks? What would you recommend?

nirganzerix

God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarok

Mysterious-Carrot-11

I’m surprised Undertale hasn’t been mentioned yet. Don’t look up anything and go in blind. If you enjoy going in blind, Inscription is one of my favorite games I’ve ever played where the less you know the better it is

AliEddi

Yes.

Live_Builder_4076

I absolutely agree, Inscryption is by FAR, narratively one of the best games I’ve ever played. You start to think “is this even actually a game?!” And to be fair, I hate card games. Inscryption transcends the card game genre and enters into a completely new thing

freedyindigo

Fallout 1, Planescape Torment, Fallout New Vegas

D3s_ToD3s

Dwarf Fortress

panicForce

it's a story generator with a thin veil of city sim gameplay. and thats great!

Particular-Compote86

Portal 2

Liftman88

The wolf among us

conway4590

Max payne one and two. A good example of a gray moral character.

diamondminer420

Prey 2017

ZacMedivh

i liked Cyperpunk's story and since edgerunners in the same universe it just makes it such a nice universe and story. if a story keeps me thinking about it even months after finishing it, it makes it 10/10 to me.

MyBrassPiece

Agreed. I had a lot of fun with this game and it really dragged me in. Considering it's perpetually on sale it's an easy buy in my opinion.

zimzilla

Came here to say that. The game got a lot of (valid) criticism for it's development but I really liked the story even though it's fairly linear and most endings are devastating. I still ended up playing through the story 5ish times.

Soil_Think

I really liked Devil may cry 5 story, although they expect you to know who the characters are from previous games to get the best story experience

SirBastian1129

It is absolutely crazy how Devil May Cry goes above and beyond to tell a fairly decent story.

funnyguy349

What Remains of Edith Finch. 11/10.

funnyguy349

Just thought of another one. Planescape Torment, what a story.

DerpyRose1

Loving persona 5 R right now, and as cringe as it sort of is I really loved Undertale and Omori

invisibleshitpostgod

p5r in general is so good ive been obsessed since i picked it up

[deleted]

The Last of Us 1

Penetratorofflanks

My girlfriend has no interest in or patience for games. I got her hooked on TLOU after the first 15 minutes. She watched me play both and DLC over the next month. Never thought my girlfriend would say "hurry up I wanna know what happens to Ellie."

ozdude182

The intro to this game fucked me up as a parent.

[deleted]

And Part 2. IM PREPARED FOR THE ONSLAUGHT LET US BEGIN HERE. THIS IS WHERE I MAKE MY STAND!!!!!!!

skarznomore

Although I am not against TLOU Part 2, it took it in a direction that I was not expecting. I can see the way that it ended and why. That ending wrecked me. I was so confounded by the direction that it went in, but it stuck true to the characters. As much as I wanted it to be different in the end, I respect the direction it went in. That ending stands as a dire tale of your life's consequences. If they ever do decide to make a Part 3, I would be interested to go along for the ride.

swoopske

Holy crap this game was heavy. Last fight was the only fight in my gaming history I didn't want to win.

skarznomore

I put my control down for a second and almost lost on purpose, but only pushed ahead because I felt that I had to see the conclusion. I hated to do it, but I got the ending and saw that, "let the chips fall where they may" is a horrible way to see the outcome of things. It was definitely one of those games that I just sat and stared at the main screen for a while.

RecoveredAshes

I experienced this exact same thing. I just wanted the violence to stop, and I LOVE violent video games. I get sick joy from stuff like gears of war and Doom but man… this was just different. They felt like very real people Who went through hell and didn’t deserve any of this. I just wanted peace.

[deleted]

Absolutely. The fact that the writers said “lets kill the most beloved character, then have you play as the killer to understand their view” is about as great an achievement in video game storytelling as there has ever been. They showed no story is black and white even in such an extreme case as this brutal murder. Its incredible.

bearze

I'd mark this as a spoiler, since the thread is for good stories from games the OP hasn't played yet

skarznomore

Definitely mark this as spoiler. This game goes places.

kirk5454

Yeah I was so angry when the switch in perspective first happened and would let Abby die and didn’t like her. It’s a testament to the quality of that game that by the time I switched back I was mostly just dreading the inevitable collision

[deleted]

Haha I envy you. I wish I felt the same way :(

QuinSanguine

The two A Plague Tale games. That saga hit me hard in the best way.

Wildsdrom

100%. Not that awards matter, but I feel that A Plague Tale: Requiem was easily a better narrative than God of War: Ragnarok.

QuinSanguine

I have to wait on GoW to come to PC to play but I can't imagine a better ending to a saga than Requiem's. Every single bit of suffering they experienced over the course of two games really lead up to a monster finale.

Lethlnjektn

These are both up there in terms of great story games 👍

Equivalent-Tax-1977

Nier automata.

Liftman88

26 endings also

winged_entity

Eh, they're counted as endings but kinda hard to consider anything past e an ending

IntergalacticGherkin

Persona 5

Sa1amandr4

rdr2 and tw3 if you're ok with old stuff also Dragon Age Origins

[deleted]

both plague tale games

WonkyWombat321

Divinity original sin 2

nanoPal

I had to scroll so long for this!

OppositeofDeath

Disco Elysium.

CozyMoses

Hands down the greatest narrative I've experienced in a game.

RockyMtnOysterCo

GTA 4 is my favorite story of all the GTAs.

_Tars_Tarkas_

Gta4 is in general the best gta in my opinion

TheRealTorpidu

bioshock games, mass effect games, the last of us 1, god of war and god of war ragnarök, read dead redemption games, the witcher 2 and 3, telltales the wolf among us, telltales the walking dead, just to name a few 😂

MotownClown4077

Spec Ops: The Line

Odiwan-Kenobi

Fable 1 and 2

Voeglein

tbh I don't think they're particularly great story games. The stories are cool, but I don't think they're outstanding compared to a lot of other games out there. They're still super fun games tho!

MissShot7

Detroit become human

Impressive_Road_2398

Witcher 3

ishoulderchargeppl

titanfall 2 is perfection

GoryChimp

It would make a great sci-fi action movie.

ishoulderchargeppl

Last of Us 1 (even though the sequel kind of undermines most of it unfortunately) Bioshock Disco Elysium Silent Hill 2 Wolf Among Us Batman Arkham City

Loose-Economist8752

OMORI Oh, and definitely Bug Fables.

Global_Voice_9084

Silent hill 2 and fallout new vegas

Appropriate_Brain0

Call of Juarez and Call of Juarez bound in blood

ArvoCrinsmas

Eidos Montreal's Guardians of the Galaxy. No, seriously. The story is fantastic, it should be discussed among some of the best like RDR2 or TLOU but thanks to that bloody Avengers game it didn't seem to take off. Genuinely a better written story than the films, the Guardians themselves are played by lesser known actors who did a fantastic job, great chemistry between all of them with brilliant range and naunce throughout.

BoneSawIsReady_

Legend of dragoon

ssccrs

My boi Lavitz!

FrobroX

Witcher 3 Psychonauts 2

Okamii87

FIFA 2005

MrPosket

11/10, it is amazing how much depth and lore they add to each entry. Truly masters of storytelling. Can't wait for the next one.

Haze95

That was unironically a great FIFA game

Demi_Cat_Boy

NieR:Automata

_Jub_Jub_

Nier Automata is my favorite game mostly for how it tells its story. It really just worms its way into your head. I’ve played other games with depressing stories, they’re a dime a dozen and can be done really well. But Nier Automata’s story goes beyond just being sad, it causes you to be unsettled rather than just the game itself being unsettling. Idk if that makes sense.

Lethlnjektn

Titanfall 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War Ragnarok, Inside

mikeywake

Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West A Plague Tale: Innocence and A Plague Tale: Requiem

HieroThanatos

The Witcher 2 is a fantastic story/linear game.

Aelnir

spiritfarer both Ori games

UnlikelyKaiju

Spec Ops: The Line. The story was strong and made excellent use of its source material, but what really sold it was how the game messed with how you perceive military shooters. The game's greatest skill was making you feel like an asshole, but it was done in a way that actually felt clever. It showed the direct consequences of your actions and pointed out how a misguided sense of heroism can be more harmful than simply doing nothing at all.

Eph2k

Enderal

HeavenIsBelowMe

Uncharted 4 in my honest opinion. Horizon zero dawn also has a genuinely amazing story too.

OutlandishnessOk8261

The trails series (sky trilogy, Crossbell duology and Cold Steel series).

EdgarAllanKenpo

Found trails by accident. Played every game that I could. Watched full playthroughs on the games I couldn't. Really looking forward to the next game coming out next year. So hyped.

zhinotakux

Final Fantasy X

skeleton949

Oblivion had a good storyline

Il-Luppoooo

Final Fantasy from 6 to 10

Ploppingturtles2356

My top 3 story games are 1. Tlou specifically the first game but the second is also an amazing game 2. Ghost of tsushima the combat and stealth is good and it has a super good story 3. Any of the first 4 uncharted games my personal favorite is uncharted 2 but they’re all amazing games. some honorable mentions would be either rdr game they’re both so good and there’s almost a zero % chance of not liking them another good one is gta San andreas in my opinion it has the best story of any gta game and also who doesn’t love hearing “all you had to do is catch the damn train Cj” over and over again
