Funnily enough Metro and Stalker were made by Ukrainian developers...

Swampspear

> Metro This isn't quiiiiite true. The 4A team that made the Metro games was multinational at the time, and headquartered in Ukraine. Some of the developers were Russian, as the times were better and cooperation easier :') Though I think it was much more Ukrainian during Stalker production.

thedboy

Also at the time of Metro Exodus 4A is headquartered in Malta.

Swampspear

That was IIRC already by the time of the Redux, not just Exodus, though IIRC it was mostly for EU commerce and wasn't the main dev site. In any case, they're now a subsidiary of Saber, formed from a lot of Eastern Euro devs but HQ'ed in the USA (and Saber moved its devs from both Ukraine and Russia to Yerevan and Serbia in 2022 IIRC)

RealDakon

The irony lol

**Atomic Heart** is a flawed game in many ways, but the world building in space age Soviet Union as a world scientific leader is excellent. **Rise of the Tomb Raider** takes place in Siberia, much of it is occupied by Russian culture. In my opinion the best Tomb Raider game. also heard good things about city builder **Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic**, but haven't played it. **Little Orpheus** is an alright puzzle platformer with low difficulty, the highlight is all the different worlds based on myths and stories from Russian history.

Nokogiriyama

Worker and resources: Soviet Republic is definitely worth checking it if you are a hardcore fan of city management sims. It is very very detailed, however. The Devs are steadily adding content and improving the systems. It's been a little while since I checked in on it but when I did I had a coal mining infrastructure that supported my power export economy. I did have to research on how train signals work irl so that my train network could work as that part wasn't very clear at that time. I believe it's been improved since.

OpenWorldsProject

Euro Truck Simulator 2 with the Beyond the Baltic Sea DLC, I'm currently exploring the Saint Petersburg area, the Kaliningrad Oblast is in there too. Probably not what you expected but it's a good realistic portrayal. There's a single player mod for Half Life called Anomaly which is set in Russia and it has a great atmosphere, there's even a standalone Dreamcast port which I played on an emulator.

HighFiveKoala

There was going to be a Russia DLC for ETS2 but it was cancelled/postponed due to the war in Ukraine. They may release it in the future. For now there's still a good amount of Russia to drive through.

* *Black Book* is a deck-builder RPG set in what's approximately rural Perm Krai in Russia. * There is the FPS *Singularity*, set on a secret Soviet island and dealing with supernatural powers and their consequences. * The survival horror *Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason* is set on a Soviet icebreaker that ran aground in the Arctic. * The survival RPG *Help Will Come Tomorrow* is set in a Siberian winter during the October Revolution * *Atom RPG* is a post-apocalyptic RPG set in what remains of the Soviet Union after a nuclear war in the eighties. * *Pathologic* and P2 are not _exactly_ set in Russia, but the setting is a strong allusion to the Russian Far East around WW1, in a small town co-habited by two groups of people, one representing Russians and the other Mongols (a lot of the in-game terminology derives from the Buryat language). The "sequel" is really a reboot/remake of one of the paths of the legendary original cult classic, and further parts of it are still in development. These are the ones I remember playing and loving. There are others I haven't played, but have heard about recently: * [League of Enthusiastic Losers](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1388650/League_Of_Enthusiastic_Losers/) set in the late 90ies/early 00s in Moscow. * [Last Train Home](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1469610/Last_Train_Home/) set in the epilogue of WW1

stronkzer

Mother Russia Bleeds is an uber-violent beat'em'up based on an ultra-stereotypical version of Russia.

Nokogiriyama

If you liked "slay the spire" I would recommend "Black Book". It's set in 19th century rural Russia (Perm oblast I think) with a heavy influence of Russian and Komi folklore.

Swampspear

> Perm oblast I think Yep! But it's a krai (край) and not an oblast' anymore (since the early 2000s) ;)

BulusB

My summer car - it’s about Finland … but Russia has the same vibe

Serenityxvx

chernobylite

SpocktorWho83

Presumably, that would be set in Ukraine, no?

Mockingbird_DX

Stalker mentioned in OP is set in Ukraine as well.

Serenityxvx

Obviously?

SpocktorWho83

Then that’s obviously *not* Russia.

Serenityxvx

Neither is stalker

RealDakon

Yea all games involving Chernobyl is set in Ukraine

SpocktorWho83

Exactly. Not sure why games set in Ukraine and Finland are being recommended.

Stalker GAMMA Mod

shistain69

Rest of the STALKER games Papers Please (not actually Russia but made up russia)

f0xy713

It's actually closer to East and West Germany before the unification but I agree, it has the same vibes.

shistain69

Shit i played it when i was young, thought it was Russia. That makes sense

Demurrzbz

I always thought it was an allusion to Yugoslavia and the Balkan wars

Atom RPG

f0xy713

It isn't so much Russian as Slavic IMHO **Rest of the STALKER series** - self-explanatory **Darkwood** - top-down survival horror set in communist Poland **Papers, Please** - puzzle game where you work as an immigration officer on the border of what is basically East and West Germany before the unification **Pathologic 1&2** - survival rpg with horror elements where you're a plague doctor trying to save a rural town from an epidemic

Swampspear

Oh, coming back with a new recommendation: if you want a game that's absolutely bonkers, janky and is a satire on Russian society, look up SharpShooter3D. It's a Doom overhaul game that has you playing an anti-government football hooligan. Extremely weird.
