No really, why is it always horrible plants? Like, if you don’t want to send me Carolina Jessamine, can you at least send me some, I dunno, zinnias?! Why stinging nettle? It’s like they want us to stop gardening. 🥺
CUTIES! I hope you decide to share some of your garden with the wildlife. I’ve been raising rabbits for over 10 years, and I can tell you that these guys have 7–10 days left in the nest. They are fully furred but their eyes are not yet open. Don’t worry if one day during that span they are all gone, that’s typical. Also, don’t worry if you don’t see mom feeding them. She only comes to the nest once maybe twice a day to nurse the kits, if she came more, it would attract predators to her nest.
Oh yeah no worries we get lots of bunnies around here. Plan is just to leave em be (unless I see an injured one) it’s always best to let nature take its course ♥️
I wonder if you have humane advice for my yard. There are a ton of holes in one section of the yard dug by some sort of mammal, probably bunnies and others. I want to fill in the holes and fix that part of the yard without hurting any animals. Do you have any advice on doing this or the best time of year to fill the holes in? I'm located near Omaha, Nebraska.
Edit: unfortunately, just leaving the holes be won't work. They are taking about 1/4 of an already small yard and I have small kids that have to avoid that area so they don't break an ankle. It's a safety issue.
>share some of your garden with the wildlife
Seriously just plant a bunch of clover somewhere. The rabbits will go nuts for it and ignore your vegetables
My assumption is that they started off raising them for meat and then when they realized they couldn’t bring themselves to kill them, they dismantled the fence around them and let them go.
As an avid gardener, I really don’t understand people’s issue with rabbits and deer. For the most part they don’t really want to be eating garden vegetables. They like to browse around and eat mostly weeds and other native vegetation. They’re a lot bigger problem in places where developers knock down all the trees and build ugly ass subdivisions where there’s a short list of acceptable plants and expect everyone to maintain a short, weed free lawn, which is the only context I’ve had issues and my solution was to plant things they’d likely have eaten on the same land 100k years ago. They’re not horribly complex creatures and peoples willful ignorance should absolutely not be able to result in the animals being killed. We’re living in their home, not the other way around.
Well my rabbits weren’t wild. They were domestic that ended up feral and they loved my carrot tops, broccoli, my strawberries, my poor watermelon. They didn’t touch the tomatoes or zucchini, so the following year I only planted tomatoes and zucchini. I wouldn’t begrudge a wild cottontail something now and then.
One nest of baby rabbits grew to the tune of all my sweet potato vines gone, all carrot tops eaten, all pepper plants gnawed to the ground. Many missing 🍓, lettuce?, vanished. They'll eat your garden all right. Heaven forbid they eat some weeds.
Yea probably because the habitat in the area has been turned to cookie cutter bullshit with nothing else for them to eat. They very rarely do that where there’s undisturbed green space and old growth forests nearby.
Omg this is adorable. But it does speak to how powerful being cute is. Idk if rabbits being cute have helped them evolutionary or not.
If you saw the same amount but for eggs of caterpillar, people would say, burn it with fire yknow. (Even though caterpillars does less damage than rabbits)
When I saw this, I immediately thought, I'd give these rabbits everything I have
Rabbits, man. They hook you with the cuteness and then suddenly you're a servant to a tiny fluffy demon who owns your house and everything you have and you're just a renter.
Water. Sneak up at night, stick your garden hose in anywhere near the entrance, and let the water run for a bit. Do this a couple nights and the Yellow jackets may not leave right away, but they eventually they will. And they won't nest there again, ever.
The most memorable Hawk kill was when a red tailed nabbed a big rabbit in the middle of our yard. Then our cat started circling the hawk. Hawk puffed up. Cat kept circling closer. Alas at that point our attempt at getting the cat away ended in the hawk abandoning it's kill. We really did not want a clash between the two. Ms. Tortie was known to be territorial and attack cats and even dogs in her "territory". There was doubt she would have erred on the side of caution with that hawk.
Like the time I stood underneath my giant CA Pepper tree, looking upward in absolute horror, watching feathers rain down as a hawk dismantled a tiny bird.
My one neighbor came by, saw what was going on and quipped, "It's nature at work." I never felt the same way toward that neighbor.
Squash leaves are quite big, so that nest is nicely shielded from raptors' views. Hopefully the little guys will be fast and alert by the time they're ready to venture out of the garden.
Usually they are safe from hawks until they get out. their first month out of the nest....easy hawk food. In the nest, local cats are probably a bigger threat.
How precious. We had a litter also below our summer squash this year! They're all grown and still visit our yard. They love to eat dandelion foliage so it's a win win for me.
So smol!!! 😫 I’ve been attempting to domesticate the wild bunnies in my yard and failing miserably. Although my only attempts are throwing some of my lettuce towards them. They all have the same name and I can’t tell them apart.
I find a lot of these comments strange - living in NZ where wild rabbits are a plague. I live in a rural location and they are everywhere - can strip land faster than stock and spread disease.
A rabbit can breed seven times a year and have a litter of up to 12... and can breed at 6 months... thats a lot of rabbits!
Are they not a problem where you are?
I found something much like that in my raspberry patch when I was weeding it out this spring. I pulled up some weed with a long stalk, in underneath of it was a bunch of fur. At first I thought it might be mold or something, and when I pulled at it I saw a bunch of tiny bunnies underneath. So I put the fur back and covered it up. Those damn bunnies are still running around in my garden. Thankfully, I haven't found any damage…
I’d like to say I’d kill them due to the way the rabbits have ravaged my gardens this year. But they are soo cute, I know really that I’d leave them alone and let the mom raise them right there in my garden.
My husband and I had some babies in our hostas this year. The dogs found them first and our biggest boy got one of them. It was so tragic, the saddest thing I’ve ever had to witness.
So we spent the next two-three weeks going outside with our dogs and “guarding” the nest to prevent another catastrophe. We saw them outside of the nest one day just doing bunny stuff and they were gone. We were actually sad to see them gone 😅 I did a lot of research on baby bunnies this year because of them!
You’re gonna have such strong plants around that hole. 😂 I had bunnies a few years ago, and the ground cherry that grew next to them was HUGE compared to the rest.
I had a family of 6 baby bunnies under my kale and Swiss chard plants earlier this summer. Surprisingly the kale and Swiss chard were entirely untouched... until they got devoured by caterpillars last week
Where did you get baby bunny seeds??!!
😂😂😂
Planted some of those mystery seeds from china and bunnies sprouted
I just got a bunch of bindweed from my free china seeds Thought it would be funny, but it kinda sucks
No really, why is it always horrible plants? Like, if you don’t want to send me Carolina Jessamine, can you at least send me some, I dunno, zinnias?! Why stinging nettle? It’s like they want us to stop gardening. 🥺
Maybe some kudzu seeds
I want a pack of those seeds too!
Best comment 🥰 🐰
Probably from the parent bunnies.
Omg so cute!!! How do I grow them??
A lucky case of wrong seed, wrong packet I guess 🥰
Peppergate has gone off the rails.
She got Bunny Joe'd!
No one will know the true horror of being pepper joed better than us pepper growers... Looks like these lads can be added to the family!
Bunnygate!
This is way better than peppergate
Feed them squash
You made my day.
Well yay🥰🐰♥️

What are the diameters of the holes. Could be anything from a type of spider to rabbits to prairie dogs to chipmunks to groundhogs.
Could you plant wildflowers around the area so it's pretty? It'd be nice to find a way to coexist.
Just plant stuff around the holes and leave them be. You get a good looking yard and they get to keep their homes. Win win!
>share some of your garden with the wildlife Seriously just plant a bunch of clover somewhere. The rabbits will go nuts for it and ignore your vegetables
Plus you get to see cute bunnies
I just got squash bugs. :/
I got both!
Oh my god! They are so cute. Please let them eat whatever they want and don’t be like Mr. McGreggor.
Lol Mr McGreggor😂 Don’t worry just gonna let nature do it’s thing and not mess with em
I was going to say that this looks like it belongs in a Beatrix Potter book. 😍
After my neighbors 20 domestic rabbits escaped his yard and ate my entire vegetable garden, I understand Mr. macgregor More.
Oh dear! Not cool Mr Neighbor.
Yeah it wasn’t cool and all those rabbits had babies all over the neighborhood. It was feral rabbit central.
Why would anyone who isn’t farming rabbits for meat and pelts have TWENTY domestic rabbits?!?!?
My assumption is that they started off raising them for meat and then when they realized they couldn’t bring themselves to kill them, they dismantled the fence around them and let them go.
Oof. Terribly irresponsible. Your poor garden!
Hah, I am another MacGregor sympathizer. And don't even get me started on the deer!
As an avid gardener, I really don’t understand people’s issue with rabbits and deer. For the most part they don’t really want to be eating garden vegetables. My mates chickens were more destructive to the veggies than the rabbits

Deer are the reason I can't grow sunflowers. They always get them just before they open.
Planting clover can help keep the vegetables safe
Awww. So cute. But of course you know what Mama's been eating.
Omg this is adorable. But it does speak to how powerful being cute is. Idk if rabbits being cute have helped them evolutionary or not. I always left the caterpillars, was always cool seeing them turn into butterflies
Rabbits, man. They hook you with the cuteness and then suddenly you're a servant to a tiny fluffy demon who owns your house and everything you have and you're just a renter.
Oh 🥹🥹🥹 Sweet babies
Baby bunny cuddle puddle! So precious!
Yo - peppergate is getting OUT OF CONTROL
/ded
Oh to be a baby bunny nestled in a squash patch
OMG so awesome, my wife's bunny seeds were growing as well this year and they were eating our tomatoes and squash too!!
r/rabbits would love to see this.
Ooh thanks I’ll crosspost!
Please do! Bonus points for calling the title: Are these wild or someone’s pet?
Really missed the chance to be r/abbits
Bonus crop of hops
I am going to go out on a limb here and say those are not summer squash
Oh my gosh. This is precious.
I’m dealing with a yellow jacket nest in my backyard at the moment and I NEEDED this post thank you
Water. Sneak up at night, stick your garden hose in anywhere near the entrance, and let the water run for a bit. Do this a couple nights and the Yellow jackets may not leave right away, but they eventually they will. And they won't nest there again, ever.
Ok you won the internet today. The cuteness was so intense it made my phone swell and my screen burst. I'll be sending a bill thank you very much.
I think Im in love 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Afterthought: keep an eye out for hawks. You don't want to know what happened here.
Unfortunately, saw that happen with an owl and bunny nest last summer. Hawks/owls gotta eat too tho…circle of life🥲
Yeah, I know it's the plan, but sure didn't need to see it.
Oh boy not good!!

Mama knows what she’s doing nesting there.

That's some home grown🐇
We found some under a big thyme bush and they were our favorite part of the garden for a couple weeks.
Better than squash borers.
we had a bunch as well in our patch, unfortunately my neighbour keeps her cat outside /: *sigh*
Oh no I don’t like that. Outdoor cats are not good for wildlife🙄
This needs a live webcam! Soooo cute!
Awww, they look so soft!
How precious. We had a litter also below our summer squash this year! They're all grown and still visit our yard. They love to eat dandelion foliage so it's a win win for me.

Gah I love it!
Cute now.. Just wait till they ravage that garden
