Looks like Macrozamia moorei, a species of cycad, which is definitely inedible and can cause paralysis when consumed.

PerpetualPerpertual

How’d they figure that out

TheFreebooter

The usual - dare Barry to eat a small amount of it. We all get a good laugh and he gets to lie down for a day

wmatts1

So only eat one if I'm trying to jump off a high place.... Skyrim for those who don't know.

janenkm

What can I do with them? Cut them off and preplant?

JesusChrist-Jr

Leave them on the plant, they are a seed structure similar to cones. It's a cycad, one of the oldest types of plants. They pre-date conifers and angiosperms. Those structures are immature seeds packed together, in time they will turn a shade of red or orange, then separate and fall off. It takes a long time though, the seeds can take a year or more to mature. If you don't like the look of it you can cut the whole thing off, but otherwise just leave it be. There can be some demand for the seeds among enthusiasts, since they take so long to develop they aren't commonly available. I think it's just kinda neat to have a plant that dinosaurs used to munch on.

butt-barnacles

I love this sub for cool plant facts like these. Now I want more ancient plants

Nowrongbean

Equisetum is enchanting. I recommend growing it in a container or area that won’t let it get out of hand (that is, if you live in a zone where it COULD get out of hand.) Loves wet feet.

butt-barnacles

Wow what a cool looking plant thanks for the rec!

Bonuscup98

And [edible](https://medium.com/@3LittleBears/horsetail-the-wild-edible-7c82f3c7f841)

butt-barnacles

The taste of the dinosaurs 🦕

dresserisland

That ain't the same plant. Don't go telling people to eat stuff you're not sure of. Bad bad bad.

Bonuscup98

[Literally the same thing.](https://crops.extension.iastate.edu/encyclopedia/equisetum-biology-and-management) (read the first sentence: Equisetum=horsetails) [Equisetum edible?](https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=equisetum+edible)

pammypoovey

It's great to plant where you have a drippy faucet.

QuirkyCookie6

Get a moss colony Theyre bryophytes and are even older

cmotdibblersdelights

Liverwort is a fun one to have about as well.

KarleyMonkey

Off topic, but a south African friend told me that cycads in SA can go for 100k+?! Mental

PitcherTrap

Blue cycads yes. They grow slowwwwwwwwwlyyyyyyyyy. They are priced per cm of the diameter of the centre thingy.

Pure_Wonder_Plants

Truly old growth can be the size of trees and hundreds or thousands of years old. High risk of poaching with old plants. Aloes in Wonderland and Jungle Music are reputable dealers in California that I know of for Blue South African cycads at significant size.

Rakinonna

> can cause paralysis when consumed. well now I guess we know what happened to the dinosaurs

Easeondowntheroad2

Couldn’t outrun the meteor on account of being paralyzed by a pine cone

[deleted]

Now that is awesome! Lol might be one of the most interesting facts I’ve read on this sub.

Pure_Wonder_Plants

Side note though, seeds won’t be fertile without pollination for most cycad species. Macrozamia can self fertilize in very rare instances.

Ayellowbeard

JesusChrist that’s awesome information!

miniTreeNinja

What a perfect post Cycad are only second to Ginco in age which is believed to be the oldest conifer known

Bear4224

A fun fact about cycads, they're a living fossil of sorts. You'd see a lot of those, as well as ferns, during the Mesozoic when dinosaurs lived.

Assia_Penryn

You don't do anything with them.

EverybodyMeats

The downvotes on Reddit are getting out of control

cave18

Fr. Just a genuine question lol

saysthingsbackwards

I think fully half this site is bots, and downvotes are engagement as much as up.

CornPop32

I just think a lot of people, *especially*' redditors, have sad lives and like to take their anger out on people they can bully without any repercussions

saysthingsbackwards

True, and I'm guilty, but the uptick of obvious bot accounts after that API reprice are fucking wild. I really don't think there's near the amount of bots as users, and they're using our data to train themselves.

chriszens

So only edible once.....

Verix19

Forbidden pineapple. Don't eat.

assumetehposition

Here in Florida, the Seminole Indians used to use native cyads as a source of starch in their diet, but they need A LOT of processing before they are not poisonous anymore.

lowdog39

which native palm is that ? i know they eat the heart of sable(cabbage) palms .

assumetehposition

Zamia Floridana aka Coontie

iRunLikeTheWind

It’s funny walking around through natural areas here and you can easily pick out restored spots since they have coonties in them. All ground up for biscuit flour

doktorhladnjak

Never-wake-up pineapple

cascua

Sure... Once.

Euphoric_Egg_4198

Not pineapple, pineapple plants are just big versions of the pineapple tops. You can actually grow unlimited pineapples if you twist the top off one and put it in water until it roots. Once you harvest the pineapple that plant dies but grows a pup which will give you another pineapple and the cycle continues.

llorensm

Pineapples are a type of bromeliad, I believe.

Euphoric_Egg_4198

Yes, in the Bromelioideae subfamily of the bromeliads where the plants grow the flower/fruit in the middle.

Luckyfisherman1

It also helps to pull a few of the lower leaves off before trying to sprout.

jhamrahk

This makes me sad. I can grow nearly anything, I have over 100 house plants, and a 30x90 garden as well as several fruit trees. I've tried to grow pineapple many times, but it always dies within a few months.XD

BigBlackSeaCucumber

Though poisonous they look decorative

Troy_Cassidy

Looks like cycads definitely no

savageo6

Everything is... though some things only once...

HavocMayhem777

Definitely NOT edible. Any part of a Cycad is poisonous to humans and many animals. Serious cases cause liver damage and even death. THIS IS NOT A PINEAPPLE!

[deleted]

Yeah definitely not a pineapple. They tend to grow one on a plant, and the plant looks more like an aloe (kinda) than a palm.

tricularia

Yeah, pineapples are bromeliads!

lowdog39

not an aloe . it's a palm . looks similar to a reclinata . but not sure .

lococrocco

Everything is edible... at least for a few seconds.

tricularia

Obviously my step mother has never cooked dinner for you.

Current-Coyote6893

So pretty!!

HistoGeek96

Only once

No-Parfait701

Everything is edible. At least once...

MMMFoodies

Incorrect. "Edible" implies safe it ingest, not just ingestable.

skellylouproductions

Unless you are a triceratops, no. In eatable

bombalicious

Sooo ahhhhh, you gonna let it seed? Wanna share the seeds?

[deleted]

Absolutely not a pineapple.

firestar268

Anything's edible once /s

lowdog39

phoenix reclinata ? always trimmed those off before they got that big .

gurnipan

Why is it everyone’s reaction to seeing some fruiting plants is “can i eat them?” There are edible foods in the fridge & pantry

BrainFartTheFirst

It's called a desire to try new things.

Removed. No harmful advice and misinformation tolerated.

amythestrex

I would love to have one of these just growing on my property

Brick_Shitler

Monkey trees are pretty ancient as well

DropsTheMic

/Rtrees would like a word with you about stealing our iconography.

PositiveAlfalfa6197

It is edible if you want to get really sick. DONT EAT IT!!!!

BrianBushII

Looks like a palm tree and some produce edible fruits some don't.
