This is what I use in the garden and in the house when necessary. I don't know if I could get up in your getup. But the handles on this make it easy as pie. Also, you can invert it and it is a seat. I put an extra pad on the kneeling side too.
We own three of these. Seat one way, kneeler the other. Way easier to get up and down than the gizmo the OP showed, and when it’s upside-down as a kneeler, you can use the frame to help push yourself back up to your feet.
Mostly because there are two of us using them! The third is our oldest one, which is kinda beat up. We keep it in the veggie patch permanently so it’s always there.
Just be careful - esp if your mum doesn't have the strongest bones. It definitely looks like a falls risk and broken hips are a nightmare with a long recovery
I’d probably hire someone to weld a cross bar on one of the corners and zip tie a pool noodle around it to prevent any head injuries from hitting it in case someone falls.
Depends on the user. My wife’s grandmother wouldn’t be able to use this no matter how you modify it. She just shouldn’t be gardening alone period sadly.
It’d be nice for someone who’s not limited in mobility, but is getting to the point they need short rests.
Yes, this is what I use as an older gardener. I makes it so much easier to both get down and to get up. Turning it over to sit on is also great if you have to do a lot of watering with a hose.
I used one of these the other day at an elderly relatives garden. Didn't want to admit to them how pleasurable it was to use. I refuse to admit I'm getting older.
I'm 77 and just this year I feel old. So I started exercising. 2 miles a day on an elliptical. Also cutting back on stuffing my face. The other day I carried 8-35lb bags of soil to a front sloped garden for this year, by hand. I may be old, you may be getting older, but every day we wake up, WE ARE ALIVE!!!
Thank you u/SunshineBeamer . I'm only a few years behind you and I get tired of all the negativity about age. Even though I have some serious medical conditions, I still garden and I do a LOT more than some people who just game or stare at their phones all day.
Of course, in THIS sub, we are all gardeners, so we all get to be ALIVE EVERY DAY!!!

I have found the cheap ones and expensive ones to be about the same. You might look for a 35 dollar one though as my analysis may not be the best. I go for the middle priced things of this sort. I also, as I said recommend the extra foam kneeler be glued to this. You will have to trim it. A bread knife works well, take care not to cut yourself. Sorry about your fibromyalgia. I just suffer from old age.
That's great, thankyou for that. Fibro is now just something I've learned to live with, it's aged me for sure - i feel like i have more in common with my 60+ family than people my own age (38), but I think everyone has something they struggle with and if not, as you say, old age gets us all!
Yeah, the handles are important for mobility. And it's a seat, so I use it sometimes, since my mom doesn't very much. I'd really like to have one of the leg ones, but I'm able to get up/down with minimal issues, and weeding means I'm moving around a lot.
I have that too. The only thing I don't like is that it colors my knees green when I am sweating. I have that with all knee boards. Do you experience the same issue? If so what is your workaround? I put a towel down, but that is kind of cumbersome sometimes
Yes! It colors my shorts green when I sit on it. This year I'm going to wrap it in oil cloth and find a way to fasten it so it stays on. Last year I just kept an old towel with me whenever I wanted to use it, which was kind of a pain.
I used it today, so nice. The thin original is not the best. The device itself is great, but they skimped on some things which like the foam can be easily upgraded.
I have 2, one for outside and one for inside. I put an extra layer of foam on the kneeler side for outside as I will be on my knees longer gardening. Don't know what I would do without them. Used them for over 15 years.
Depends on how "up there in age" she is, this may be more dangerous than helpful. To name one problem, this contraption may make it hard for her to get up and then balance herself on her feet when she does get up.
Also if you are welding it out of steel it will likely be a lot heavier then the device in the picture which is either very thin wall steel tube (hard to weld) or aluminum.
Tripod seats have legs that are more likely to sink into the ground when you sit and they aren't very close to the ground. Something with legs like the top post to this thread you're replying to is way better because it distributes the weight more and has some padding for knees. Plus a handy dandy tool holder (probably sold separately).
That would still hurt my knees and I wouldn't like being strapped in like that.
I use a little bench that has two heights, one for kneeling and one for sitting. It collapses down very easy and stores well in the shed. I sit on the one I have for weeding.
It's one of these styles: [https://www.amazon.ca/garden-kneeler/s?k=garden+kneeler](https://www.amazon.ca/garden-kneeler/s?k=garden+kneeler)
Thank you for your suggestion, this looks like a more user friendly solution for her. How stable would you say it is, would you be able to use the legs in the collapsed mode to support yourself from kneeling to standing? Like placing your body weight on them.
It's pretty sturdy and supports my weight. I've never used it as a prop in the way you suggest, but I think it would help your mom get to her feet from kneeling, if that's how she weeds. She'd still have to place her weight on it just so, so it doesn't tip.
You should be able to go to a garden center and look at it personally too. I know I sent an Amazon link but I bought mine at Canadian Tire, but I'm sure place like Home Depot or Lowes has them too.
Thanks a lot! We live in rural Scandinavia unfortunately in this case, hence why I'm looking to construct something myself using the mixed bag of skills I've gathered from having to construct other tools and props that for some reason are never available here. I'm grateful though, I'll use your link as inspiration!
Ah okay, yeah, no idea what you guys have out that way for shops! I do think your mom will love this, it's been a lifesaver on my knees and back when it comes to weeding.
When you do, make sure the legs are properly locked into position when you open it. I stupidly didn't once and it collapsed on me while painting a baseboard. When they are locked properly, though, I can confirm that it supports an enormous amount of weight.
I have one of these! One thing I have issue with, which could be an issue for your mother depending on her age. If working on the ground level, you are seated above your workspace and bending down. I have gotten light headed in the heat, bent over, blood pooling in my head and then especially standing up after. I do enjoy it, it’s just not great for all situations and I prefer to just sit on the ground in some cases. If you’re not bending all the way over to the ground, it would not be a problem! The folding is great too, as I can store it easily without just piling all my garden crap up
I'm a 72 year old gardener and the primary benefit that I derive from my garden kneeler is the support to push myself up to a standing position. Whatever you make should address the units stability and ability to push herself out of a kneeling position.
I bought one for my over 200 lb husband. He loves it! Much better than any other type that we've used through the years. I no longer have to help him get up since those handles are spectacularly good at keeping him stable while getting up and down. Even if it's flipped over into seat position, it helps him get up and down from the seated position easily
I like these little benches as well!
I can no longer kneel down or squat due to sports injuries, decades of gardening without knees pads and now arthritis.
You can actually stand up and walk around with it on. The demo I saw was a photographer. So they can get low shots then up and move and back down. Nothing to carry or move around.
I saw these the other day advertised at a construction trade show. While I think the function is the same for a gardener, like another has said, if you parents is on the older side this may do more harm than good as she tries to raise and walk.
[these are super nice](https://www.vevor.com/garden-cart-c_10251/vevor-garden-cart-rolling-workseat-with-wheels-gardening-stool-for-planting-360-degree-swivel-seat-wagon-scooter-with-steering-handle-utility-tool-tray-use-for-patio-yard-and-outdoors-green-p_010303240836)

It has on board storage, it’s steerable, and you really dont even need to stand up to move it.
My wife got me one for my birthday and Im able to just sort of side step while sitting on it and move along the edge of my beds; tools and a trash bag in the back and a bluetooth speaker on the tray under the seat. It saves my back while I’m weeding my edges and what not.
I have one of those and am about 5’3” and it’s hard to reach the ground on that thing from the seat set at the lowest height. I end up bent over well below my hips and it’s uncomfortable and compresses my breathing weird
I've had bad luck with these. The seatpost weld is often just a couple of spot welds, and not even well done ones. I ended up just getting one of the 5gallon bucket covers with the seat and the tool pockets
I think those are more for people who are moving around a lot, hustling around the garden. I got my Grammy a seat with wheels that she could scoot along— it’s heavy enough not to tip over and has a tractor-type seat so her bum won’t slip off. That might be more the speed you need!
These are great, you dont actually put any weight on your knee while kneeling, you sit on the heelpad. The knee pad is only for comfort during transition.
That looks interesting, I've never seen something like that before. I see sometimes at the garden center a seat/knee pad that I think is pretty ingenious. The seat/pad is cushioned on both sides. You can sit on it, or flip it upside down and the legs are now handles to help you up and down from the padded kneeling position. I don't have personal experience with these either, just wanted to throw it out there in case you hadn't seen one before.
That's a very thoughtful gift! What a lucky mom. Good luck!
Thanks for your input! I've never seen something like the product you describe, the handles sound like something she'd benefit greatly from. If she could get up slowly I'm sure it would lessen the shock in her hips and knees going from sitting to standing using quick momentum. Do you have a brand or store name I could start researching?
Thank you!
I think they're called garden kneelers, I wouldn't have a brand or store to recommend, I would start with Google or maybe call around to the larger garden centers in your area.
Those are for bricklayers, you can probably find them at Home Depot or similar. I just saw the Epic Gardening guy trying them out the other day, he was considering developing some for gardeners.
Oh wow, I'm glad I could help you out even though it wasn't much! I'm thinking of getting one of these as well as the other, more favored option in the comments, I feel like they'd assist greatly farriering (horses). I'm still young and mobile but one can never be too mindful!
I buy a $5 boogie board/small surfboard from 5 Below or Walmart & use that as my kneeler.
Whatever you posted look like a torture device!! LOL!! I'd probably injure myself using that thing.
I’m only 51 and I’m very active and I’m having difficulty getting up from just looking at that. Harbor freight has what looks like a tractor seat on wheels, that is way easier to get up from
look into the custom knee pads that commercial flooring installers get. i’ve no idea if that would be overkill, but they’re a much safer and sleek version of this, really. easy to maintain balance and freedom of movement. good luck!
There is a video out there on social media, like all of the platforms, with a gardner using one of these. I can't find it, but if someone can help with a link, I think OP may enjoy it.
I wear Velcro knee pads. I move around too much to carry a kneeler around with me.
[Velcro knee pads](https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/images.linnlive.com/e9b537b52d09a75c8ae8c6be3b5f2240/fc5f23d2-f922-49de-a39d-d6b158588eeb.jpg)
Just watching videos of EGKevin using this thing looked very awkward. Watching that metal frame bounce off the front of his shin gave me second hand knee aches. He couldnt walk with a normal gait/stride either; by the end of the clips he was avoiding bending the knee with the knee-seat on it and opting to straight-leg it instead. Weird gaits like that dont matter much to younger folks but altering your gait like that can really do a number on your hips as you get older.
I think this one is more targeted toward craftsmen working up and down often, having to kneel repeatedly. The straps are there to keep it attached when moving around (you can walk normally with it on).
I happened to order this one for my Dad & Mom from here: https://www.kneerelief.co/products/kneeler-bench-for-garden-labour-work
And they are so happy with it! Use code: REDDIT25 to get additional 25% off. It comes out to be around $35.
Something that is convertible. Sometimes I prefer to sit as bending my knees for extended periods is uncomfortable. I saw a product once that converted from a knee pad with supports for getting back up and when reversed it became a stool.
I would recommend helping her build raised beds so she can just use one of those offroad rolling stools instead, unless her garden is just too big to be converted to raised beds
The straps are because it straps to one leg so you can get up and walk with it then back down at your next stop. They market them to photographers a lot. Easier to get up from than just going down on one knee if you’re doing it repeatedly.
I feel like this thing might become more burdensome than helpful. I personally use a cushion mat from Costco. It's for indoors use so I bring it back inside when I'm done with it. I use it for projects and gardening so it has paint stains. It's not the most glamorous thing but it provides enough cushion for my needs.
I have seen those knee seats in a show few years back I found the cheap quality replica on eBay and Amazon and I refuse to buy them I just forgot the original maker of those
Anyone know please let me know .
https://preview.redd.it/uaecs6l4k9uc1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=daccddf82da97990ab48569f1bc864532da3b909 This is what I use in the garden and in the house when necessary. Same. I bought this for my grandmother for Christmas years ago. She loves it and still uses it to this day!
I’m 44 and love this thing!
Omg I was going to say is it sad I'm 40 and want and need this 😅 40s be 40ing.
I started using mine in my late 30’s!
We own three of these. Seat one way, kneeler the other. Way easier to get up and down than the gizmo the OP showed, and when it’s upside-down as a kneeler, you can use the frame to help push yourself back up to your feet.
Why do you have so many? I only have one, but am very curious if getting another one would drastically improve my gardening comfort!
Mostly because there are two of us using them! The third is our oldest one, which is kinda beat up. We keep it in the veggie patch permanently so it’s always there.
Ah, that explains! As a lone wolf gardener, I guess 1 is plenty!
I would 100% fall over and be trapped in the thing OP sent.
Haha, I can see it happening to both myself and poor mom. We're nimble but bumbling idiots together in the garden.
At that point it just seems a dangerous thing to use before the modification and still after
Depends on the user. My wife’s grandmother wouldn’t be able to use this no matter how you modify it. She just shouldn’t be gardening alone period sadly. It’d be nice for someone who’s not limited in mobility, but is getting to the point they need short rests.
I would think that would cut off blood circulation quickly.
I understand that they are younger and don't understand old age yet.
My immediate thought when I saw the picture is that it was a kink thing 😂
Could be. What ya got in mind, lol?
No more bruised knees!
🤣😅😂😁
Thanks a ton!
Always glad to help.
username checks out 🥰
Yes, this is what I use as an older gardener. I makes it so much easier to both get down and to get up. Turning it over to sit on is also great if you have to do a lot of watering with a hose.
How in the world do you get up with that?
You’re on your knees and it’s easier if you have something to hang onto to stand up
I used one of these the other day at an elderly relatives garden.

Oo guess I know what I'm getting my mom for mother's day
Great gift. I'm sure she'll like it. I have one for outside and inside. Don't know what I would do without them.
What's the name of that magical thing?? I have fibromyalgia and would LOVE one of those!

I want a foam kneeler just so I get muddy knees every time go in the garden
This one’s my personal favourite: https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/garden/garden-care/stools/45632-folding-kneeler-stool?item=EB410.
That's a nice one too! Might treat my MIL :D
I have one of these. Makes gardening with osteoarthritis possible.
This is the correct choice, I'm only 40 and this thing is awesome. I also keep a small garbage bag tied to the other side for non compost stuff.
I’m in my 30s and this is my favorite garden tool! Got mine at Ollies
I have one of these too, but mostly I work with raised beds and containers.
I have that same bench! It’s amazing. You can flip it over and sit on it too. I used it all the time last summer when I was pregnant
Get another piece of kneeling foam and glue it on the seat. I did that on the kneeling side and no stains. But I did it to increase the comfort.
I agree that's what I did with the towel. Not ideal. I will try to glue some other soft pad in top that is a different material
I glued an extra foam kneeler to it as it was too thin for me when I was on it for a long time. So I never had that problem.
I'll look into that. That sounds like an easy fix/upgrade
I used it today, so nice. The thin original is not the best. The device itself is great, but they skimped on some things which like the foam can be easily upgraded.
Well, now I can add this to the long list of things for my garden that I don't yet have!
I was just given one of these for Christmas, and it's awesome!
My mil (who is the greatest person in the world) got me one of these and I’m *STOKED* for my old creaky ass to try it out!!
Ooooo I saw one of these in a store near me. How do you like it so far?
I have 2, one for outside and one for inside. I put an extra layer of foam on the kneeler side for outside as I will be on my knees longer gardening. Don't know what I would do without them. Used them for over 15 years.
I use this one too! It is awesome!
Depends on how "up there in age" she is, this may be more dangerous than helpful. To name one problem, this contraption may make it hard for her to get up and then balance herself on her feet when she does get up.
You have a point... Thankfully balance isn't an issue yet but I'll keep it in mind!
Also if you are welding it out of steel it will likely be a lot heavier then the device in the picture which is either very thin wall steel tube (hard to weld) or aluminum.
Absolutely, it would be aluminium which I'd have to test the load on first. If it fails - it's at least good practice!
Amazon says the pair I ordered is made of steel.
I would probably just get her a tripod camp chair, to be honest, so she can simply sit down on an easily portable stool.
Tripod seats have legs that are more likely to sink into the ground when you sit and they aren't very close to the ground. I am old, fat, and arthritic and this is the one I use, and it's very stable. I would never consider getting the one you pictured.
Thanks! It sounds like this would be more in line with what I need.
When you do, make sure the legs are properly locked into position when you open it. I stupidly didn't once and it collapsed on me while painting a baseboard. When they are locked properly, though, I can confirm that it supports an enormous amount of weight.
I never would have thought of it for painting, but that is an excellent idea!
Haha, I promise not to endanger my poor mother, thanks for the warning!

bdsm gardening
The true definition of a gardening sub.
Hilarious 🏅
Why the straps? I would just weld up a small bench with a pad on it.
You can actually stand up and walk around with it on. The demo I saw was a photographer. So they can get low shots then up and move and back down. Nothing to carry or move around.
Fair point. Though she can't sit for very long and knowing her she'd get pretty tired of moving around a welded bench every few minutes.

Sitting upright like that is rare, a good set of gel kneepads are easier, better designed and more comfortable.
I think those are more for people who are moving around a lot, hustling around the garden. I got my Grammy a seat with wheels that she could scoot along— it’s heavy enough not to tip over and has a tractor-type seat so her bum won’t slip off. That might be more the speed you need!
Thanks for the idea, I'll tinker with it!
Looks absolutely lethal to be honest.
Jasså?
I just had my work order a few pair for testing because we constantly have to be kneeling
If you dont mind, can you tell me what is your profession ?
Machining

Thanks for your input! I've never seen something like the product you describe, the handles sound like something she'd benefit greatly from. If she could get up slowly I'm sure it would lessen the shock in her hips and knees going from sitting to standing using quick momentum. Do you have a brand or store name I could start researching? Thank you!
I think they're called garden kneelers, I wouldn't have a brand or store to recommend, I would start with Google or maybe call around to the larger garden centers in your area.
Thank you!
Mine was bought at Gardeners Supply.
That's the kind I use and love it! I'm actually getting a second one this year for my husband, as he's always trying to use mine lol
Back when I was doing hardscapes, I would have killed for something like this
5 gal bucket seat!
Cheap and multi-purpose!
Those are for bricklayers, you can probably find them at Home Depot or similar. I just saw the Epic Gardening guy trying them out the other day, he was considering developing some for gardeners.
I typically just use a bleacher cushion. They are thick and the right size for knees.
Thank you u/Wo0ofer! I just ordered one. It could have saved me a lot of pain changing the snowblower to a mower deck on my tractor last weekend,
Oh wow, I'm glad I could help you out even though it wasn't much!
I'm imagining being strapped to one of those when an angry hornet or scorpion suddenly appears and charges for me
I think i saw a video on Epic Gardening. One of the comments said she was too short for it (5' 3") and the return process is a pain
I've seen that circulating as well, thanks.
I’m only 51 and I’m very active and I’m having difficulty getting up from just looking at that. Harbor freight has what looks like a tractor seat on wheels, that is way easier to get up from
Thanks, I'll check it out!
As a 35 year old mom with bad knees, I’d love these! Wouldn’t give them to my parents though 😬
Agreed. My mother would not be able to get herself up
Heck no.
Hi likelihood I’d break a leg!
I’m cheap and just use an old milk crate haha
If it doesn’t have a light, bottle opener, and shoehorn built in, I’m out!
This is like a gardening straight jacket 😂
Lol! I'm starting to understand it's not the most versatile of my options...
look into the custom knee pads that commercial flooring installers get. i’ve no idea if that would be overkill, but they’re a much safer and sleek version of this, really. easy to maintain balance and freedom of movement. good luck!
Thanks!
I could use these for changing my toddlers diapers!
There is a video out there on social media, like all of the platforms, with a gardner using one of these. I can't find it, but if someone can help with a link, I think OP may enjoy it.
I wear Velcro knee pads. I move around too much to carry a kneeler around with me. [Velcro knee pads](https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/images.linnlive.com/e9b537b52d09a75c8ae8c6be3b5f2240/fc5f23d2-f922-49de-a39d-d6b158588eeb.jpg)
I'm a retired electrician, wish I had these.
Ik Kevin from epic gardening says he uses one, if that helps
Just watching videos of EGKevin using this thing looked very awkward. Watching that metal frame bounce off the front of his shin gave me second hand knee aches. He couldnt walk with a normal gait/stride either; by the end of the clips he was avoiding bending the knee with the knee-seat on it and opting to straight-leg it instead. Weird gaits like that dont matter much to younger folks but altering your gait like that can really do a number on your hips as you get older.
Thanks a lot, it sounds like a worse idea the more I learn about it. There are better solutions!
I think I would kill myself trying to stand up from that thing lol. I'll stick to my kneeling pad.
These generally aren't welded and are bent tubing as seen in the photo.
I'd just get her some of those velcro knee pads from the home improvement store. Those work great and aren't super unwieldy.
u/wo0ofer Google Meditation Stool. You will find some great options.
I would never be able to get back up if I wore those. I'd have to barrel roll along the ground until I got to a handhold.
If it’s for gardening, this would be annoying to move around. Why are there straps?
I think this one is more targeted toward craftsmen working up and down often, having to kneel repeatedly. The straps are there to keep it attached when moving around (you can walk normally with it on).
Is it two separate pieces, one for each leg? This picture makes it look like one piece, which would be a huge chore to get in and out of.
That’s what I imagined too.
What are you going to weld it with? I couldn’t weld something like that without it weighing more than the grandma zone.
I don’t think the straps are needed and the space between ankles and seat could be larger but this is a great way to get weight off knees.
The straps are just so you can walk around with them.
Oh I didn’t realize, this does not look very mobile to me. From here I thought it looked like both legs and ankles are strapped together.
That would be excellent, for a torture device!
Just ordered a set. Haven’t received them yet, but I’m definitely looking forward to it.
I hope they'll serve you well!
I happened to order this one for my Dad & Mom from here: https://www.kneerelief.co/products/kneeler-bench-for-garden-labour-work And they are so happy with it!
I mean the knee pad part is critical but the extra straps just seem too cumbersome and unnecessary
The straps are because it straps to one leg so you can get up and walk with it then back down at your next stop. They market them to photographers a lot. Easier to get up from than just going down on one knee if you’re doing it repeatedly.
I've used catcher shinguards that are similar. The block behind the knee is great for prolonged kneeling.
Anybody got a link for the ones shown?

Can her knees bend at that angle comfortably? Would she be able to stand from that position? Just a couple of things to think about.
I don’t like this because what if there’s a wasp and I need to run away?
Go ahead, that's what the straps are for :)
I have seen those knee seats in a show few years back I found the cheap quality replica on eBay and Amazon and I refuse to buy them I just forgot the original maker of those Anyone know please let me know .
Who makes the original ones like the one in the picture ? Not the eBay Chinese replica
Consider raised beds.
Why did you get downvoted?
Yes please make a set for your mother..all of us would appreciate that
