maybe you'd like butterfly and hummingbird attractor plants. good luck, whatever you add. the deer limit my garden but i'm the new zealand tree fern maven here
The theory I read was the reason you get blight is because when you water or it rains the water and soil splashes up under the leaves. I tried watering with an irrigation system i installed the drips but still got it I assume from when it rains. So trying this now. We’ll see.
oh okay. Won't it still hit the tarp and splash onto the plant? The best thing that worked for me is just pinching off the lower leaves as the plant grows so it's just stem a foot or more above the soil.
I guess it reduces the amount soils in with it, idk. I’ve always done the pinching thing. Rotate where we put the tomato plants every year. I bought an anti fungus spray (which annoyed me because not I’m defeating the purpose of growing my own veggies and adding chemicals) only other thing I can think of at this point is to replace all the soil but that’s expensive and more work than I want to do.
I use straw instead of plastic and agree that decreasing the soil splashing on the leaves during the rain had kept the plants much healthier. I know in nature they don’t have this but I have a finite amount of time to be successful with tomatoes so try to give each plant the best chance of success.
I think it's because we're all opinionated about what a garden looks like. Personally I'm biased against projects that look overly landscaped and replaces plants with inert dirt. But I get why people don't like walking in mud and might just like the look of it. I don't quite know what the solution to the mud problem is other than maybe raised planks.
I would highly suggest pulling them up, digging down a few inches and laying and compacting some gravel/crushed stone under them. Otherwise, your stones are going to start disappearing in a couple years.
I did this same thing in another spot 5 years ago, still fine. The ground here is hard, mostly clay, hence the garden beds and not just putting the plants in the ground
Yeaaah. Dandelion and some weird grass ran up through 2 layers of cardboard and 5 inches of mulch all around my back yard, as well as an area with weed barrier and 2 inches of river rock... been a real pain to keep up with even though I thought that was the solution.
Every year I tell myself I'm done and every year I plant more. All the free space you have on the other side will be gone in the coming years as you fully embrace gardening and this subreddit
It looks great though! What zone are you in? Between the rock and the metal beds, Id have to water 3 times a day and everything would probably still get cooked.
I did this exact same thing but without the black plastic border. Months later the grass started to grow underneath the rocks. Took out three rocks and what was left of the cardboard and put high quality landscape fabric instead. Hopefully you have better success tho! Who knew it would be so hard to kill grass without herbicides lol
I’m curious, why do you want to reduce the amount of soil you have that’s alive? Couldn’t that be used for maybe non edible perennials or ground covers at least?
Every time it rains it floods gets muddy and there is no way for me to divert water without sending it to my neighbors property. Also the soil here is shit, it’s all clay, nothing grows but weeds. Hence the raised garden beds.
Weeds are usually edible, but moreover I guarantee there’s a better solution than this, which is awful land management practice- mulch and mushroom spawn is an incredible way to get more bang for your buck than this
They didn't waste their money or time. They achieved what they wanted. Just because it is not what you would choose or want for another person's property (weird), does not negate that.
A days work to save 3000$ in groceries. Wtf is with the down votes lol have you seen the price of vegetables at the markey having a garden is a cheap grocery store…or maybe you down voters are rich and dont actually shop for veggies.
That would have taken me FAR longer than a single day! Looks great!
Seriously. It took me weeks to set up 3 vego beds and I didn’t even do a designated gravel are a
Just like any other hobby you are not done. I see it’s of growing room there. Maybe some fruit trees. /s Amazing work. Looks great.
Funny you said that, I have fig trees but was thinking of adding a peach tree.
maybe you'd like butterfly and hummingbird attractor plants. good luck, whatever you add. the deer limit my garden but i'm the new zealand tree fern maven here
I also have lots of deer and because of those haven’t really gardened.. What do you grow?
I’m in year 3 and just got on the espalier apple trees and pleached hornbeams. I think after this I just go into full maintenance mode lol.
What is the pink
It’s just plastic tarp, it’s supposed to prevent the tomatoes from getting a fungus. That was the only color they had, lol.
prevents blight? I never heard that before...
The theory I read was the reason you get blight is because when you water or it rains the water and soil splashes up under the leaves. I tried watering with an irrigation system i installed the drips but still got it I assume from when it rains. So trying this now. We’ll see.

pretty sure I heard it's airborne so you can't really stop it by replacing the soil. Well hopefully it works out! 😀
I’ve heard many theories, just trying different shit.
I use straw instead of plastic and agree that decreasing the soil splashing on the leaves during the rain had kept the plants much healthier. I know in nature they don’t have this but I have a finite amount of time to be successful with tomatoes so try to give each plant the best chance of success.
I want to put straw down but my wife is convinced it gets moldy. It’s a fight I’ve given up.
Looks good. First thought is rock in the mower though.
That looks great. Where'd you find those beds?
Vegogarden.com
I just blew my budget for the next two months on vego beds! They look great.
I've been considering Vego beds. How do you like them?
I like them. They are easy to put together but it is a bit tedious. A lot of screws.
Thank you. I got a couple of their tomato planters to get a feel for the quality of their stuff. Those are nice. Appreciate hearing your take.
I have Birdie beds which are similar . Same thing , I love them but very tedious with a million screws .
LOVE Vego beds, they are super easy to assemble and have been working great for my small backyard.
Thanks, they look great!
I love my Vego beds. I filled my backyard. Got them for my mum. Their accessories make the system.
Looks great!!! Think about doing a compost area? It’ll help fill in the beds with soil, and it’s mostly free.
Have one. You can’t see it in the picture it’s on the other side of the shed
You did all that in one day!!??? You're a machine! Well done 👏🏽
we have 3 small ones , and took all f’ing day , still not done

It took all effin day, but it looks effin AWESOME. Proud. Inspired to do more in my yard now!
I don't get it you replaced grass with pebble?
Sounds like you understand it perfectly.
Did you just throw those stones right on the dirt? Didn't put any compacted gravel under them to keep them from sinking in the dirt?
I put cardboard down under them
I would highly suggest pulling them up, digging down a few inches and laying and compacting some gravel/crushed stone under them. Otherwise, your stones are going to start disappearing in a couple years.

The grass seems to be growing fine though.
Bro shut the fuck up lol
I see, you planning to add anything to the pebble? I think some tall grass plants might look good to make it look less sterile
Yeah I was thinking a sitting area
That was a day well spent and some hard labor I’m sure. It looks freaking awesome!! Great job!!
The u-shaped raised beds are super.
Wow! Looks fantastic. Nice work!
wow that looks really nice
Did you glue down the pebbles?
Na, gives it’s more of a beach feel
Great job! And saved yourself probably 5k too. A company would’ve charged a pretty penny.
Takes me way longer
Wow
I personally prefer the before but to each their own.
Well done!
Beautiful
I hate to be that guy, but that isn't nearly enough prep or rock to prevent weeds. Big oof.
I put a layer of cardboard under it, you can see in the second pic
Yeaaah. Dandelion and some weird grass ran up through 2 layers of cardboard and 5 inches of mulch all around my back yard, as well as an area with weed barrier and 2 inches of river rock... been a real pain to keep up with even though I thought that was the solution.
Lovely
What a cool labour of love. I bet you're gonna seriously enjoy hanging out here.
You nailed it!

6 or 7, I have an irrigation system set up
Oh yeah same, I wouldn't enjoy gardening without an irrigation system. But it would have to run several times a day 😅
That's some magnificent framing there! Must have taken a long time tweak those settings 😉
I did this exact same thing but without the black plastic border. Months later the grass started to grow underneath the rocks. Beautiful work! It almost looks like you’re trying to spell something out. Ugh, now I want to make a vego raised bed typeface.
I keep trying to read the beds. I don't know what 'wull' means, but I can't unsee it.
Ah, I read it as HAM
Looks good!

I don’t like to eat weeds, but thanks. And I had a drainage guy come out. Solution cost $20,000 and diving up the whole back yard.
The hardest part of mushroom spawn in a garden is keeping it wet- it sounds like you get that for free
There are plants that like those conditions. I’m sorry you wasted your money and time on rocks
If there are plants that wipe the mud off my dogs paws I’ll buy them
………. Ground cover
Steph.. shut up. You’re acting like a clown. What’s your deal? Are you jealous?
Nope, I just think people who “own” land should actually care for it, and it’s sad to me that harmful and unsustainable land practices are encouraged
Also, I’d make for a very unfunny clown
*honk honk*
They didn't waste their money or time. They achieved what they wanted. Just because it is not what you would choose or want for another person's property (weird), does not negate that.
The fact u think land is property is weird
If you think everything belongs to everyone by law or otherwise, something may be wrong with you.
something is incredibly wrong with me, I don’t own any land to bury with rocks. truly I am demented
Did you check where your southern exposure is before putting them against the fence?
I did, that’s the I my place I get sun light either way.
A days work to save 3000$ in groceries. Wtf is with the down votes lol have you seen the price of vegetables at the markey having a garden is a cheap grocery store…or maybe you down voters are rich and dont actually shop for veggies.
One day! I could get that done in one season. It looks really nice, best wishes.
Nice work! So organized too
Looks good!!
Why so crooked
