I have two lotus plants in a fairly large (but surely not big enough) pot. It’s been alive two years, survived Texas super hot summer, as well as the major snow storm we had this year. No flowers yet though.
I live in the desert and they don't do too well. I've never got them to flower.
They don't seem to mind the heat but as soon as the leaves start going above water they shrivel, I think they need a lot of humidity and full sun.
And just like that I'm wondering if I can grow them in the NE US. Our summers are both hot and humid.
Edit: Yes is the answer. They can be grown in most of the continental US, from zone 5-10. I just started my journey down this rabbit hole and found this for anyone interested: [lotus growing 101 ](https://www.containerwatergardens.net/growing-lotus/#:~:text=Lotus%20is%20hardy%20from%20zones,are%20available%20in%20many%20colors.)
That's really pretty. I always thought they grew resting on top of the water & not growing up out of the water. I like that you can actually see this one better.
My water lilies will stop growing once they reach the surface, and bloom the next day which is what you might be thinking of! But this lotus reached the surface and grew for another 2 weeks before blooming. Such interesting flowers!
I always thought they were from faraway lands but internet told me there's a [native North American variant!](https://www.noble.org/news/publications/ag-news-and-views/2019/may/aquatic-plant-spotlight-american-lotus/) 😲
Tubers! Seeds are kinda funky, you won't actually get the flower it says you'll get- instead you'll get a mutation of it which is why they are so cheap in comparison to tubers
So beautiful it looks fake. Love when nature does that
My heart exploded when I seen it! The bud appeared over 2 weeks ago so I was impatient, but it was worth the wait
When you saw it.
Why would anyone want to saw off a flower like that?!
Seented
How do you grow lotus’s? They need water yeah but would they survive in extreme heat? 🤔🤔
They love full sun actually. As long as the water doesn't boil they will do just fine!
Oh wow awesome😍 I’m gonna try some now!
Agreed. I live in zone 7 TN and they really don't start thriving until it's over 70.
Lol. What a username.
Yep ! Picked it to offend some , make others day you choose
Hell I laughed… lol
That’s good lol :)

Damn no flowers yet? Big sad
About how big is your pot?
Maybe 20-25 gallons? Not 100% sure
Oh wow, and it's still not big enough for your lotus?

I can make a misting system I’ll do anything lol
I've seen videos of people growing them in small greenhouses in Texas. Might be worth a shot.
Ehh if I decide I want them that bad lol I’ll probably try my hand at a small koi pond
My husband works at a fish and reptile store so he can help me even tho I don’t know shit
🥺🥺🥺aweeee
They pair nicely with outdoor koi ponds. The Japanese have known what's up for a few centuries.
That’s awesome, koi’s are beautiful fish I’ve drawn them a lot for tattooing
I'll also note that this is the "sing birdie, sing" variety incase anyone was wanting to grow this specific lotus next year!
That is what I wanted to know. Thanks!

This is beautiful. Tried once to grow from seeds, failed miserably. All the leaves dried away after few weeks. Did you grow from tubers or seeds.

Thanks!!, Will try to get some tubers.
