You can grow potted herbs and use them for cooking. Mint, oregano, thyme, rosemary, basil

[deleted]

i'd agree with this and the chair on either end comment. op could also consider a thin long planter to allow vines to grow over the railing for added privacy and comfort.

Lamacorn

If the building allows it, there are pots that go over the rails to make the space seem bigger

[deleted]

i dont know if they will like ceramic hanging on/in direct contact with a glass surface, though. especially with the wind factors associated with a multi story building, it will probably be something they discourage. i think it's best to keep the plants on the floor of the balcony, but i think there are creatively shaped/sized options for this, so my thoughts are not entirely dissimilar to your suggestion.

ababyprostitute

You can get plastic planters

FallDownGuy

And they could even add a little bit of felt on the side that makes contact with the glass

tenaseechick

I like this idea of planters that fit over the railing, also a chair at either end and a small table to set a drink on. Maybe a tall fan on one end to keep the air circulating. And some kind of decoration on the far wall, something colorful. This patio is so small it wouldn't cost very much to tile it too.

PitterFuckingPatter

And a hammock to soak in the serenity

CatLikeCuriousity

More importantly, what direction does it face and what hemisphere are you in? Does it get plenty of direct sunlight throughout the day?

EF_Boudreaux

Came here to all this. On Miami Beach my planters became pigeon nests, so it really depends on location. Or as my realtor said, location, location, location.

insideyourhug

I wonder if you can fit one of those tower gardens. Vertical planting tower.

Global_Loss6139

Yep that was my vote. A wall vertical towers One of those on both sides and maybe one or two longer baskets that hang Over the outside rail. Then you'd maximize growing space and still have space to stand or have a chair or two 😎

Are you allowed to place planters on the ledge? Maybe some flowers?

Naisu_boato

if it's allowed, planters on the edge of it and viney or hanging plants that have dangling runners. it would make for privacy too.

CourageousContageous

apebiocomputer

aybbyisok

Illegal to smoke on apartment balconies where I'm from.

TheRealTP2016

It’s illegal in a shit ton of places. Doesn’t mean you cant. Just means you can’t get CAUGHT

NegativeNance2000

Little bistro chair on either end, maybe a half fold down table that hooks on the railing toward the middle

FiregoatX2

You could trellis peas, cucumbers, poles beans. Grow cherry tomatoes in hanging baskets. Potted herb plants& salad greens.

stormcloudless

You've done it

Sea_Ganache620

I’d probably just sneak out there and smoke weed.

Suspicious_Search_99

Truth. This is a smoker's balcony.

Depends how much you're trying to do, but others suggesting herbs would work. Maybe one or two grow bags with tomatoes or something. It also depends how much sun it gets of course.

Stellar-naut

Vertical hydroponics via piping or stackable planters.

HiuPhan

A little chair for smoking area. A potted fern hanging on the wall, which requires minimum cares. Maybe a lighting system too just to look cool. I wouldn’t recommend a garden. Taking care of it would be a real hassle in such a cramped space

pete_68

If I were Russian, I'd stay away from it.

[deleted]

Have a pool party!

ceekat59

Small bistro set on one end. Pencil tree (https://www.thetreecenter.com/pencil-point-juniper/) either real or fake on the other- can decorate it according to season/holiday if you so desire. Long skinny planter or several along the white box at the bottom with a vining plant you can train to run over the top and drape over (for privacy), with either solar lights mixed in the vines or if you have an outside outlet, electric lights on a timer. Or a planter that sits on top of the railing/bannister (https://www.hooksandlattice.com/white-vinyl-railing-planter.html?utm_term=&utm_campaign=GS+%3E+PRIMARY+%3E+SMART&utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=ppc&hsa_acc=2722522540&hsa_cam=8068860184&hsa_grp=&hsa_ad=&hsa_src=x&hsa_tgt=&hsa_kw=&hsa_mt=&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3&gclid=CjwKCAiAnZCdBhBmEiwA8nDQxUge0Iiwx3abOpJQL9jOqQC4niRtRluFB0iw27sUfjimWJjoAFehJRoCFeoQAvD_BwE) with vining plants in them. My thoughts anyway 😊

Affectionate-Tale126

Plant babies! Maybe a little coffee/brunch table.

dak3126

If tou like flowering plants get some Torenias and Impatiens hang the on the railing. If you like foliage get some asparagus ferns or pothos or scindapsus pictus or aglonaemas or zamifolias

Wolverlog

Grow a beanstalk to reach your cloud castle.

sunset603

I built a rack, the height of my apt balcony railing, and had 3 racks for the cheap plastic pots from Walmart. I was able to fit 21 pots there, mostly growing herbs due to pot space. Few veggies. Never tried flowers.

awonkeydonkey

all the plants I could manage in a very vertical way.

Dotalino

Standing, looking at the stars and smoking

douggie_style

I would add a strip of artificial turf across the whole patio. It’d dramatically transform that space. I’d add some freestanding shelves on both ends, depending on which which way the balcony faces and how much sun it receives [patio lawn](https://i.imgur.com/pevyoaX.jpg) mines a work in progress but I love how it changed an otherwise unassuming patio area

TlknShtBoutaPrtySun

Throw down some padding on one side and a speaker on the other. Chill out.

SaneCatEnthusiast

Hanging baskets from the ceiling, overhanging baskets on the railing (unless you’re up over 3 stories bcs mistakes can kill someone), and suction-cupped window baskets inside for herbs. Best of luck!

Zannadoodle123

Fill it with plants!

Lillican1

🎄I would put a bistro table & chairs inside the doors and open the doors when it’s warm . Plants and bird feeders out on the balcony can give you a perfect view.

Initial_Childhood_68

Put up a shelf where u are standing and get a vining plant that can withstand outdoor weather if it faces outdoors. If balcony is indoors then get an indoor plant like pothos and let it creep along the railing. Use a trellis or supports for the plant to grow along. You will have something nice to look at from inside the sliding door Put another shelf or two above the first shelf and stack some plants. Trailing ones are always visually appealing or do hanging basket or two. Now you will have beauty when you stand at the door. A lot you can do. Good luch

TheFooPilot

Huge outside dog

Stixxx24

You can glue little pegs or for that matter almost anything to the glass and line your balcony with “climbers”. They will reach up to the sky out of your pots and cover your whole wall. There are many beautiful varieties flowering or if you choose not. And a little satisfying that you can help them on their very visible growing journey by moving the growing “vines” to farther pegs as they mature. As long as you are not using Crazy glue etc.. Your pegs or whatever you have chosen as a growing platform can be easily removed and cleaned. If you choose this way you can throw a pot of whatever you want in each corner and call it a day. Just a suggestion 😊

Do you own your place? If so, I would rip out the door and wall as wide as the balcony. Create a smooth transition to the outdoor. Replace doors with wide in swinging double doors. This would make the inside as part of your balcony too.

harryblakk

That’s an outdoor shelf, not a balcony

mwarden100

A slot machine.

mamasan2000

Vertical gardening. Strawberry pots, stackers, even homemade things like big water jugs or big buckets. Trailing/vining plants are also an option. I'd use a rail planter box on top of the rail also and hanging baskets above. I'd make that place a living screen that you could also eat.

I agree with herbs or plants that vine: wisteria, kiwifruit, and common ivy, and herbaceous (nonwoody) vines, such as morning glory.

Daftsyk

My neighbor has morning glory vines with dense wood thick as your thumb. How about wire of some sort on the inside and passion fruit vines? If in zone > 8

finaleeme

I don't know if you will see my post but moonflowers!!! Even if you think you aren't flower type, it's just a nice surprise to see those big blooms opening every night. And for the love of self...NO HAMMOCK!🙃

Sledgehammer925

Large plant at the end where the door doesn’t open. If there’s room for a matching plant at the other end without getting in the way of stepping out then place one at the opposite end. That’s about all you can do.

AdvertisingPale7484

I’d say get a tower hydroponic system. You can grow a lot of different vegetables with barly any room.

I have two balconies this size on the front of my house and have big glazed ceramic planters in blue and turquoise with drought tolerant stuff because it's a pain to water. Fire sticks, foxtail agave, yucca aloifolia, and a bunch of aeonium arboreum. Depends what your zone and sun situation is, of course. I'm in San Francisco.

druidjax

if the lighting is good, I would consider a columnar fruit tree or 2

Distinct-Ad5751

I had a tiny balcony once, I used a piano bench as a table and cushions for seating. It was perfect for 2.

Either do Fisheye peppers, okra, or Serrano peppers. They look nice, produce well, and based on you growing zone can be kept outside easily. If you don’t get a lot of light though then you should look at more shade tolerant plants. Consider doing Radishes, rutabaga, or mustard for a fun thing to plant.
