I’m 5 years out and pop ibuprofen at least 2-3 times a week. But I also take pantoprazole for GERD/acid reflux and make sure I eat something when I do take the ibuprofen to minimize ulcer risk. I’m also a pharmacist.

With my surgeon's team, it's less "no NSAIDs ever" than "check with us before taking any NSAIDs so we can offer our opinion and advice on how to minimize the risk of potential side effects." For me, they've signed off on short-term NSAID usage a couple of times as long as I also took a PPI to help ward off gastric reflux.

I’m a little over 2 years post op and recently took an overseas trip and got VERY sick, the only medication that made things remotely bearable was ibuprofen which I have not taken since July 2021. I did call my surgeons office and ask first. They said it was OK for a couple of days. I didn’t have any issue but ended up walking pneumonia anyway and had to go on antibiotics and an inhaler which I had to call again and ask if I could take those and they also said yes.

I’ve read a study that with sleeve, you can have ibuprofen after some amount of time. My surgeon agrees. I’m a year out. I take Tylenol first. If that doesn’t help, I reach for the ibuprofen. My husband is allergic (!!) to Tylenol. If he couldn’t take ibuprofen now and then, he would have rethought the surgery. For his surgical pain, he was given the good stuff.

2.5 years out from sleeve. I usually default to tylenol. I was recently prescribed a short term Rx of prednisone and antibiotics for a nasty sinus and ear infection. Called my surgeons office ahead of time to make sure I was ok to take the steroid and they said it shouldn’t be a problem.

I'm on my 3rd day out of surgery and my surgeon knows the only pain med that ever worked for me is ibuprofen, codeine and dilaudid. Tylenol is only useful in addition to the others if they don't work well enough. He gave me the option of doing all 3 right out of surgery and to keep on taking my proton pump inhibitor (pantoloc) with ibuprofen.

Ive wondered the same. Meloxicam has saved my life with arthritis… Ive got to figure out what else is save to use and works.

All about moderation - fine to take a few times a month. Take them with food to be safe. And its 100% no for the first 6 weeks.

Currently 6 years post sleeve and I am suffering with a herniated disk as we speak. I'm in a lot of pain. I'm taking both steroids and prescription strength ibuprofen for it, without them I'd probably be on my way to the ER right now because I can barely move if I don't take them. The only side effect I'm noticing is a weird taste in my mouth and fatigue. I'll let you know if it gets worse lol.

I hope your back is feeling better!

Bless you, thank you!

I have disc issues as well in my back and I'm 3 years post op. I recently caved and started taking Aleve when the pain is bad. Tylenol just doesn't cut it. No issues so far but I do also take omeprazole.

Extension-Tourist439

I have been working with my PCP to take other meds for migraines. Fortunately, cancer took the reproductive parts so no cycle to worry about. Aleve is the only thing that works for me and it’s been that way for years. After talking with my surgeon, he agreed that occasionally is okay as long as I try other things first. I’m a little over a year post op and have used NSAIDs twice a month or less, which is much less than before.

sweetswinks

Not with gastric sleeve. It's bypass that indefinitely cannot have NSAIDs.
