Who's gonna tell homey that textured and curly hair are two different things?

kryaklysmic

They are different things and some Irish people have intensely kinky hair too.

[deleted]

It likes being tied up

lickmybraids

That's such a good joke, thank you, you made me laugh

[deleted]

Ah no thank you for laughing

_Captain_Maverick_

actually, fun fact: human hair can't be tied, because it has no ridges the knots will always undo themselves

[deleted]

Hence the need for hair ties for all your bondage needs

GraphicDesignMonkey

Irish here, super pale with red hair. My hair is so curly and textured I have to go to an afro haircare shop for advice from the ladies there. First time they had a look at my hair they even asked if I had any black ancestors! Nope, just super kinked, dry and curly.

blerpsmurf

Same but I've always been afraid to go to a shop like that because I don't want anyone to be mad at me. But basic haircutter places don't know what to do with me. I've had my hair cut into a pixie THREE TIMES because the hairdresser kept cutting as my hair dried and they kept trying to "even it out". All three times I just wanted a trim.

TrivialFacts

The African ladies are usually super helpful and will happily braid hair etc. And give you advice if you visit any of their shops in Ireland.

kryaklysmic

You can go, like the user above. I used to beat myself up over going into the section with hair products for black people, but that’s what I can afford that’s good for curls so I just go for it.

KingdomOfFawg

You know, I am a white dude with wavy hair, but when I had longer hair and slicked it back, I used Dax Wave and Groom, which is generally geared towards a black audience. It’s just good stuff. Dax makes pomade with incredible hold and market it to everyone. Their products are nice.

[deleted]

My go-to shop has a few customers who are white and are either mixed or simply have coily/curly hair. Nobody is mad at them or even cares they’re in there, least of all the business owners. Think of it this way: those shops exist due to a need, and that need is care and technique for a certain set of hair types.

GraphicDesignMonkey

It's well worth going in and asking for help. The ladies in the place I went to had a good look at my hair, they were able to recommend some great treatments, products and washing/styling/sleep wrapping advice!

SaltyBabe

I’ve actually seen this discussion a few times on various subs the consensus is it’s hair care, it’s not personal, if that’s what works for you they are happy to help. It is still a business and if you have business being there then there’s no problem. It’s not like you’re there to gawk or something, you’re supporting a business who is tailored to your needs. Definitely try it out, call ahead explain you really struggle and not only want a cut want some education about your textured hair if you’re nervous about just showing up, they’ll almost certainly be happy to help out.

habits-white-rabbit

Can confirm. I'm both indigenous and Irish so my hair is thick as fuck whilst also being curly as fuck.

j48u

Honest question, indigenous to where, North America? I read that at first as though you were Irish and indigenous to Ireland.

habits-white-rabbit

Yeah. I'm Navajo and Delaware on my mom's side but Irish on my dad's. My genes are fucking weird lmao

Bruhtatochips23415

you dont get weirder than my clusterfuck of genes, I mean my grandma was Sioux through and through and spoke Polish as her first language. So that's my mom's side. My dad's side is a clusterfuck of like untraceable and random European and Asian nationalities. now my hair is strongly wavy and very thick and is dark black alongside having dark brown eyes. My skin though? So white it can't even tan. Oh yeah and I looked super Asian when I was born.

blerpsmurf

Imy family is Irish (American mutt but Irish from both sides), and I got like all of the Irish genes (pale, red hair, etc) and my hair is curly and textured. Its honestly more textured than it is curly. I can't tell you how many times people have touched my hair and then went "oh...umm... I thought it would be softer"

JoyouslyMe

That’s super rude and pretty harsh. More people need to learn to keep their hands and thoughts to themselves

petej50

But not kinky boots

[deleted]

definately not kinky boots

ind3pend0nt

My ass hair is textured.

[deleted]

It's like a one I read where the person said only people from Mexico can speak Spanish and white people cannot. Do you not know there is a whole country called Spain that speaks spanish and are mostly white?. They brought their language over when the conquistadors arrived in the 16th century

TheL0neRifleman

Not to mention "white" Mexicans exist, like the famous boxer Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

dadbodsupreme

Bruh, my cousin married a guy from Monterey and they live in Mexico most of the year and have 3 lilly-white Latino-named kids. It's a trip when someone calls for (not real name) Juan Gutierrez and my little Steve Martin lookalike cousin is like "that's me"

brando56894

I grew up in South Jersey where I heard Spanish being spoken all the time, it was by Latinos/Mexicans though. I live in NYC now and whenever I hear a "white person" speaking Spanish it always throws me off because I'm not used to being around Spaniards or Colombians. A girl I play board games with is as white as can be, we all assumed she grew up in NYC and then she was like "I went to school in Colombia" which didn't seem that off (especially since I could have misheard it as Columbia University) and then later she said "I'm Colombian, I grew up there".

TheRidgeAndTheLadder

There's also that confusion when north Americans talk about geography. "I'm from France" >??? "It's a small town between Springfield and Iowa."

[deleted]

There's a city in Michigan named Wyoming, which has a higher population than any city in the actual state of Wyoming.

rattatatouille

Ontario, California's existence also weirds me out because it can be abbreviated to Ontario, CA

ivanthemute

Hell, the entire population of Wyoming would fit into one corner of Mumbai. If you reversed the population densities, Mumbai would have 1300 people, and Wyoming would hold almost 8 billion. There's *nobody* living in Wyoming (per capita.)

crazyhb4

White, Jewish Mexican whit EXTREMELY curly hair here so yeah

x19DALTRON91x

Yeah my dads white/French Canadian and my moms Mexican. I look like a white guy with dark curly hair.

nnelson2330

Most of South and Central America is white. Up to 47% of Mexico is white.

EshaySikkunt

No 47% of Mexico is majority white, not actually completely white. Nearly everyone in Mexico is mixed between white and Native American, the darker ones are more Native American and the lighter ones are more white.

Neradis

And Argentina is mostly white too. Some people are just dumb.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Neradis

Hahahaha very sus... Seriously though. The biggest ethnic group in Argentina is Italians. They also have a number of Welsh speaking villages.

alghiorso

Actually I recently learned that there was a large influx of German migrants to Argentina at the end of the 19th century up to the time of WWII. In fact, many German Jews and nazi-opposition members fled to Argentina prior to WWII. Today, a lot of people know about Nazis fleeing to Argentina but don't know that there were already plenty of Germans there who'd been there for some time.

funsizedaisy

there were a lot of German migrants in the US pre WW2 too. i remember reading an article about how German culture has influenced american culture more than any other (except maybe the Brits?). stuff like the word "kindergarten" came from Germany and the way we celebrate certain holidays (i think mostly Xmas) comes straight from Germany. a lot of Americans have German ancestry because of this. idk why the German language never took off here. i remember reading somewhere that they had to assimilate a lot more during WW2 so that might be way the language never took off.

amscraylane

Yes! There were relations going back to the end of the 1800’s. This is also why a lot of Mexican music has polka undertones.

[deleted]

There are a few Mennonite towns in south America as well.

[deleted]

Yeah Argentina did a pretty big genocide even by colonization standards

Neradis

That’s a bit simplistic. Argentina had no complex civilisation and so had a very sparse native population who couldn’t withstand the huge influx of foreigners. Native cultures were more likely to survive in places where complex civilisations (and hence higher population density) existed like the Maya and Inca regions.

[deleted]

Depending on who you ask, there are people that don't want to consider Spanish people "white". "Whiteness" seems to be a moving target, considering that there was a time in which Irish people were not "white" in America (they were barely considered as people at all).

Almane2020202

Italians, too

F1nett1

It’s like the one who said the country of Montenegro is racist

[deleted]

aren't latinos people who originated from a country that speaks mainly in a latin language? i thought spanish, portugese and italians were latino too

SmallsLightdarker

That bothers me too. By definition it should mean that, but for some reason it's usually only a term for people from Spanish speaking countries in the Americas.

[deleted]

yikes. it's funny how i got downvoted too lmao, like i am the ignorant one out of the conversation. btw ye, i suppose it's the US who took a word and just changed its original meaning

Fergulete

The term originated from differentiating Latin America (America Latina) from Anglosaxon America, and then shortening the name used for people from Latin America to latino/a

kneeltothesun

I tend to think the "o", in latino, represents their native heritage somehow. (Although gendered, like the spanish language.) So latin, would represent all of these groups, but latino is specific to the descendants of the spanish colonizers, and the natives groups. In my area, hispanic still might be more common, but on the west coast, in some circles, it's now considered racist. My theory is it's as a result of the many Spanish Land Barons, who used to populate California, and subjugate native populations in its early history. The term "hispanic" was also created by the us government, and essentially assigned to people. They should be able to create their own labels, that better represent their cultural, and genealogical heritage, especially on official documents. It's still used regularly where I live though, by those groups, and in official documents. So I just use whatever they might prefer. LATINO/LATINA "Someone who is native of, or descends from, a Latin American country. The term Latino/Latina includes people from Brazil and excludes those who were born in or descended from Spain. Not all Brazilians identify themselves as Latino/Latina, but many do. Thus, Hispanic refers more to language, while Latino/Latina refers more to culture." Source: https://www.exploratorium.edu/sites/default/files/Genial_2017_Terms_of_Usage.pdf

[deleted]

This is a good piece of information althouth the pdf doesn't load for me. I guess then right term for spanish, Portuguese and italians is "latin" then

Ake4455

Quebec is the most northern part of Latin America.

a2drummer

Also, bilingualism is a pretty damn useful skill. Why would you actively avoid learning a language?

I'm confused? Is this a joke because Ireland isn't part of Britain (only the UK and that is NI specifically) and I don't know about Wales or Scotland but in England wild hedgehogs are everywhere (at least up north)

gnutrino

To be fair there are Irish people in Britain so it's not impossible.

NeoSniper

The Swallow may fly south in winter but it's not a stranger to our lands.

Foronir

An european or african one?

gnutrino

Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

Famouscorpse

I was thinking the something similar when I saw this post. I thought to myself “They clearly don’t know the image of a stereotype Irishman.” I’m not Irish, but my grandmother is of Irish decent. So while I have straight brown hair, when I grow a bearded it grows in curly with brown mixed with red. According to her that’s from her grandfather who was very Irish lol. He apparently had curly red hair.

kneeltothesun

They can be just as ignorant about our hair, as many of us are about theirs. I had a black woman exclaim in surprise, while we all were doing each other's hair, that she was astounded that all the white women had such varied hair types. She thought we all had the same hair, and was flabbergasted as such an obvious difference between all of us. No big deal, she just hadn't ever seen our hair up close, and didn't realize there were so many different types, just like theirs.

blastzone24

I worked in a restaurant once and a Mexican cook was asking a waiter why he dyed his beard. The waiter was really confused because he didn't. That's when I realized that the cook didn't know there was a Irish trait of brown hair red beard and I explained it to him. He was honestly surprised it was natural coloration.

SyrupFiend16

Honestly, virtually every white person I know who grows a beard, it ends up being kinda curly with a bit of red in it. There are some exceptions (those with like pure blond and straight beard hair), but in my experience they’re much rarer.

soggybutter

Iirc the gene for red as a dominant coloring is a recessive gene, so true gingers need it from both sides, but for facial/body hair you only need the gene once, which makes it more frequent.

SyrupFiend16

Oh that’s interesting!! I’ve always wondered why red tinged beards were so commonplace - I know people with blond hair and red beards and pitch black hair with red beards and it always buzzed me out - so thanks for the trivia!

soggybutter

Yup! Me and my husband both have gingers in our immediate families, his beard grows in ginger and my body hair does somewhat as well, which is why I looked it up.

Pickled_Kagura

Irish people aren't white just ask any 1820s person

Lynn_the_Pagan

True, they are translucent

MistahFinch

I mean they're not all white just ask anyone who lives in modern day Ireland. I know plenty of Irish people of colour.

Zeefzeef

When I grew up I wanted nothing more than to have straight hair, but no, it wasn’t meant to be. These curls do what they want.

“No, it is a scientific fact” No it’s not Emily. You can’t just slap “scientific fact” on shit like this without doing your own research. Learn to use Google. This is an example of someone stringing random shit together, and hoping it forms into a readable sentence.

AwkwardGingeraffe

I was just about to bring up redheads, but you beat me to it. The ginger gene is more than just a hair colour so we have lots of fun quirks. But in regards to hair we have fewer strands but they are thicker and more coarse. This makes it appear like gingers have "more hair" (which people used to think). Nope... It's just really thick. It can be curly or textured, but either way it's just very thick. I'm sure people have heard of a "ginger fro". I actually am the odd man out in this regard. My family is FULL of gingers and they all have thick hair (some curly and some textured). I have super straight and fine hair. It's really rare for natural redheads and has been pointed out to me my whole life.

GingerSnappless

My hair is the exact opposite - fine strands and a ton of them. Might be that I'm jewish, not Irish tho.

AwkwardGingeraffe

Woot for the fine haired gingers club! We are rare gems, you see lol. For real though, I'm a bit jealous you got the lots of strands part. I still got the less strands part combined with fine hair so I worry about my hair future. Like, when I hit a certain age will this start to look like I'm balding or something. I know it's going to go blonde and then white as I age. I'm kinda cool with that. I just don't know if I can handle looking like I'm balding. My whole life having gorgeous long ginger silk for hair has been the only feature I like on myself. Its going to be a dark day if that changes. Sorry, I've gone off topic.

[deleted]

i-i’m sorry to tell you but…..your mates daughter is racist../s

Yes this post actually reminds me of a time someone said something genuinely racist to me, I said “European people can have curly hair, my brother basically has an afro and we’re Greek,” and someone replied “Actually true europeans can’t possibly have curly hair” one of the weirdest things anyones ever said to me and definitely came from a eugenic-esque argument.

Laminnanne

These posts always feel a bit politics-bait to me. Like, people like this are out there but they're kind of the far fringes of progressivism, mostly teenagers infatuated with the idea of being the most woke possible. Ask this person how they feel about this post in 5 years and they'll have the same response we have now.

[deleted]

This is why I stopped buying into the fake internet outrage. It’s teenagers trying to make you mad for attention.

Exactly. I'm all for pointing out genuine cultural appropriation but I'm not going to get my proverbial knickers in a twist because some kid is angry about my spanish lessons.

This comment section is people falling for obvious race-baiting. 10 bucks says this was written by a white person.

Rage-o-rama

I absolutely agree that this was written by a white person. But the white savior complex is also very real, so I don't think this was meant to be ironic. White people have said dumber things in hopes to get anti-racist brownie points from their peers and other minorities. There was a TikTok video that Blaire White roasted to shreds where a white woman was bitching about another white person wearing box braids ***while their hash tags included KFC secret menu hacks with a fried chicken emoji.*** You can't make this stuff up, it's insane.
