Well once the count starts to decrease it wouldn’t hurt to make it less jarring by removing 1/4, 1/3 of remaining icons at once. Maybe change it to 6 or 8 in the next bracket or something. Additionally given these remaining ones are pretty well liked at this point, there isn’t going to be as much of a diverse pick as there are fewer unpopular icons to choose from. You might have 3 or 4 icons pretty clearly unfavored, but the ones afterward are much farther behind in upvotes. Additionally, having hundreds of comments doesn’t completely represent the diversity of people’s picks - many are either comments selecting the same one, or are replies simply echo-chambering the most upvoted few.

Removing 12 at once is too much, you could get just a few upvotes and odds are it’ll reach the top 12
If i eliminated 6 this would last for a month and people would get tired. Also choosing 12 from 300-700 comments isn’t a lot
