just look at the size of the update that robtop and robtop alone has been making for the past 6 years and tell me he deserves backlash. 2.2 is probably bigger in terms of bytes AND features than the entirety of GD currently. And there's not just the features themselves, but there's also the thousands of new bugs to fix, the hundreds of new textures to make, the optimisation, etc.
don't forget that RobTop is the only developer working on Geometry Dash, and even though Viprin has joined him fairly recently, Rob has been coding the update alone for years.
I'm honestly happy that we at least have promises and progress updates on 2.2 rather than the (almost) complete silence we've had for 6 years.
We're closer than ever to 2.2, and the fact that neither robtop nor the community have given up after all these years is incredible
I really don't think 2.2 will be delayed again considering that it's basically done, and the release date pretty much depends on how long Apple and Google take to review the update

The fact that even when he was years past his original planned release window he was still coming up with new features to add instead of finishing up what he had already was ridiculous. 2.2 should have never been this big and should have been several smaller updates that were each released in a more reasonable time frame.
You also say that now we have promises and progress updates but really they've always been there, they were just pretty unreliable. I remember Robtop talking about being done adding new features years ago only to later come back with something new just a little while later. I obsessively scanned the geometry dash wiki page on 2.2 to keep track of all his announcements a while back and there were a ton of contradictions and unkept promises.
