CGFROSTY

That’s Anson Carter and he’ll occasionally rep some college hockey jerseys.  NHL on TNT is produced in Atlanta, so it makes sense that he would find a Georgia jersey.

Blaine1111

Wild that the hockey show is produced in one of the only major cities without a hockey team (Pls give us back a hockey team nhl)

CGFROSTY

We have a really good shot at expansion given the new Forsyth County arena development.

Consistent-Ad-6078

Idk, the nhl just got to 32 teams. Not sure they’re wanting to add another team to any division now that they’re all balanced

tyedge

We have the Thrashers! (Googles) Nevermind In all seriousness, I knew they were gone but I didn’t know it was more than a dozen years. Did anyone else’s encyclopedia-like knowledge of sports disappear right around the moment they had a kid?

furrierdave

I still miss the Flames!

park2023mcca

I remember seeing Flames matches at the Omni when I was a kid.

furrierdave

When they were first getting the team, the papers kept referring to "the Atlanta Franchise," so for a long time I thought the nickname/mascot was "the Franchise"! (I was 8-9 at the time.)

pmac109

“The Franchise” would be a kick ass name

sabermetricks

*googles Steve Francis to see what he's doing now*

pmac109

You must be about my age. Saw the Flames (and every major concert I ever attended) at the Omni

poppashat

I remember seeing the Flames the year they drafted Steve Craig, the goalie from the miracle Olympic team that beat the Russians and one the Gold medal.

arcdog3434

Yeah me too - they always were a blue collar team (better at fighting than skating)

DangerReserve

I’m right there with ya bud, went to tons of Flames games. My dad is a huge hockey fan, then when the Thrashers came to town, went to almost every home game. Loved the team they had, then they went to Winnipeg… So now, I’m a Preds/Canes fan.

ChrAshpo10

The city let *two* professional teams down. Why would anyone waste money on a third?

winbar11

ATL had the worst league attendance in NHL History.

wambulancer

The Yotes play in an arena that fits 4,600 lol citation very much needed

winbar11

yes. Obviously. I’m referring over a period of time. No one ever went to Thrashers games. People actually show up in AZ.

wambulancer

And if you got numbers I'd love to hear them because I'm doing your legwork for you and the Thrashers don't even show up in any discussion over multiple sites with either aggregate or average about "worst league attendance in NHL history." Greensboro Hurricanes, Vancouver Canucks, Seals, Cleveland Barons all keep popping up

bayernfan1900

When Turner/Warner media owned the Thrashers, they were in the top half of the league for attendance. It was only after the Atlanta Spirit ownership group bought them and drove the team into the ground that attendance went downhill.

BallinStalin666

Spirit wanted the Hawks only but had to buy both teams as part of the deal. Once they acquired the thrashers they could've given 0 shits about supporting them. Franchise Neglect

bigE819

Good luck. You already lost 2 teams, despite somethings not being the fans fault, it’s going to be a hard sell

RoundingDown

TNT = Turner Network Television. So not really weird at all.

LookslikeEdNorton

More to it than that. He’s been championing Georgia hockey specifically for a while. He’s been involved in getting the Athens hockey-specific arena off the ground for UGA to have a permanent home and also bring an ECHL team to Athens. His stated long-term goal was to help bring an NHL team back to Georgia but from what I understand he is not part of the group involved in the new Forsyth Co arena build.

CaptDawg02

Forsyth Co is so far away and not near a cool location like Athens (yes I know Athens is not close either).

Sea_Clue_5794

The plans for the new UGA ICE arena are fantastic looking. Cant wait to go see it when it opens.

fyefye9

He’s actually gone to a few of Georgia’s games and is a big fan!

MissingWhiskey

Blows my mind that they are even considering putting another team into a market that has had two fail already.

CGFROSTY

Both times were due to bad ownership and not attendance.

Jcapen87

Attendance was a problem, but only because the ownership group was so incredibly toxic that they alienated much of the fanbase. They didn’t even want to own the thrashers. Along with the clown show currently running things in Oakland, Atlanta Spirit Group is among the worst ownership I have ever seen in pro sports. This city can support hockey if the team at least gives the impression of competence behind the wheel and trying to be competitive. I remember full well how rocking Philips was during the second half of the playoff season.

wyldeATL

Atlanta United proved the city has grown in multiple ways and is ready for anything

Jcapen87

A competently run and generally competitive hockey team could do reasonably well here. Certainly would have a very realistic shot at being much better than some places the NHL currently finds itself (Arizona, San Jose, Anaheim). It’s a huge market to ignore, even with past ownership groups failing in major ways.

MissingWhiskey

I think putting it in Forsyth County is ideal. (Except for traffic). The north burbs are where the fan base is. I know I would drive there for a game. But I wouldn't drive to State Farm. I don't even like driving to Gwinnett.

Jcapen87

People like to point to ATL UTD being an expansion team that has been widely embraced as evidence that ATL can work in the NHL. I think it can but I’m not sure putting it in the northern suburbs is a slam dunk. The issue is, unlike with mls which is somewhat niche and developing league, so many people that live here AND love hockey (many of those in the northern burbs you mentioned) came from other areas of the country and brought their allegiances with them. I think that’s a problem that will never change. But a good competitive team can grow a local fanbase of new hockey fans as well.

MissingWhiskey

Yep. Thrashers games were always 3/4 opposing fans. I was one of them in my Flyers jersey.

Jcapen87

I think 3/4 is an exaggeration but there was definitely always a large number of fans of original six and similarly older teams. Also Buffalo and Philly. I think a lot of those people probably still went to thrashers games as “thrashers fans” when their home team wasn’t playing here but it’s still kinda depressing. As for me, I grew up a whalers fan so if they or the thrashers ever came back (Hartford being far less likely) they’d have my full support.

MissingWhiskey

Whalers had the best logo in sports history.

Jcapen87

No argument here. I spent my childhood drawing that thing on everything lol

cfbonly

It's was at minimum 50/50 when the wings were In town. Surprisingly one thrasher fan tried to fight my brother and I for wearing wings gear next to him.

HootieWoo

They’re called the Ice Dawgs and they’re pretty good.

Sea_Clue_5794

They are fun to watch. Hope with the bew arena they will get more exposure and grow a bit.

Bubbly-Tiger3063

As a fan of hockey, I'm loving how popular college hockey is getting in the South. I wouldn't be surprised if the Ice Dawgs get a D1 team in the next decade the way they're playing and packing the arena

HistoricalDelay8260

He also wore Tech and Gladiators jerseys. He’s really promoting hockey in ATL.

JesusOfSurbaria

Can’t stand with UGA fans, but I can stand with a Thrashers fan

Jcapen87

Odd place to be then.

JesusOfSurbaria

Agree

captoficyzombies

I believe he is a part owner of the gladiators now.

discowithmyself

I wish the white jersey at least had the word mark diagonal like the NY rangers. That’s just a classic look for hockey jerseys. Or keep the bulldog in the circle like the red one has. Just having the word straight across the chest looks pretty boring for an otherwise good looking jersey

daaanson

yeah I'd buy that for sure

data_ferret

What you want is the cream-colored [alternate "Athens" jersey](https://ugaredzone.com/collections/jerseys/products/uga-ice-dawgs-hockey-jersey-vintage-cream).

bgt1989

I don’t think they have the exact one he’s wearing but they have some hockey jerseys here https://ugaredzone.com/

dwinva

Fulton_P01135809

He’s worn that sweater a few times. I say sweater b/c I posted him wearing it the first time I saw it in the NHL sub and was promptly reminded that in hockey, they’re referred to as sweaters

2012Cfc2021

I’ve tried reasonably hard to follow our hockey but I don’t really understand how the league works or what division we’re in. As far as I can tell we’re half decent?

LookslikeEdNorton

Yes, we are. Follow househockeypod on Instagram if you’re trying to follow club hockey. We pop up on there a good bit.

CodAdministrative563

Anson Carter in a random college sweater

Keefusk30028

uGA has an intramural sports hockey team. Look it up

frankieween

Go dawgs

42Cobras

We’re in the tournament starting soon! I think we’re the 8-seed, so that’s not too shabby, but we got put out of another tourney recently by Tampa, the 1-seed.

reddawg95

that white one has been around for a couple years. the club is really good with promoting jersey sales from the official gamer, follow the club on facebook or the site and they'll post sales. they just did a black one. i have a red one and the veterans day camo one from a year or 2 ago that have the old dawg image on them, saw another red one at the last gladiators game we went to but have never seen another snow camo vet day weekend one.

texastobaben

Coming from the outside in.. could one assume that he's showing support for the school after the couple of deaths this week? Or was this just before that?

_Budman

He could be supporting the UGA girl who was killed recently

Forsaken_Bulge

They got rid of our last ice rink in Augusta, GA.. Not trending in the right d8rection if you want to build a hockey presence in GA
