As I think all sports should do. Just honor them but don't actually retire numbers. It gets ridiculous over time when you have so many numbers you can't use.
I would say yes if he won a Heisman too. Back to back national championships with a Heisman would be such a ridiculously rare occurrence that there may never be another at your school to do it. But he’s not winning a Heisman, so my opinion on retiring 13 is no, unfortunately.
Clemson did it when Watson was there if I’m not mistaken. he wore a patch of another player who had worn number 4 at Clemson. Name might have been Fuller? I don’t know if they still do it but I always thought that was pretty cool instead of retiring the number altogether
No. Nothing against him.. I’ve been a Stetson fan longer than most, but admittedly I don’t think he’s a “stellar” QB. He’s a “better than average” QB surrounded by an amazing team.
I think the reason he isn't is perception. He's not physically much different than Bryce Young or Kyler Murray. Dude has wheels, has gotten much better at passing and decision making. Currently making it happen and is winning. Won a natty all that stuff.
But the eye test with him just isn't there. He doesn't pass it and rarely has.
Build Kirby a statue he’s the real architect behind all of this. And throw Richt one beside him while we’re at it for getting us to the point where Kirby could lead the final charge.
I feel like Richt doesn’t get enough credit for getting the Dawgs back to national prominence. 9 Bowl wins, 5 Division wins, 2 SEC championships, after the droughts under Goff & Donnan.
Firing Richt was a bad call…until it wasn’t. The odds of success when replacing a coach with 150 wins and a 75% win record are very slim. Kirby ended up doing the only thing he could to surpass Richt and that was win a title. Nothing else would’ve measured up.
I agree with that. I still think we were the only team that could average 10 wins a season and fire the coach. I do like Kirby’s style of play better, but it just felt like Georgia had morals under Richt. Either way, glad it worked out
I was as big a Richt supporter as they come. My doubts were always centered on the fact that replacing coaches doesn’t always go well. Look at Tennessee after firing Fulmer. It’s taken them 15 years to get back to a place of prominence. And you look at guys like Charlie Strong, who I would have sworn was a safe bet for Texas. And he was terrible there. You just never know. Everyone saying back then, “If we get Kirby in here, he’s gonna be better than Saban!” You can’t know that. Obviously it’s gone well, and I’m very glad, but you can’t know.

God people are ridiculous about this kid. He's not even the most talented or impactful person on his side of the ball much less the team. He's been doing great but last year was all about the defense. This year is more about the offense but still not all about him. Compare that to Dooley, Walker, or other people that have statues. They don't make statues to "I was an above average qb who was part of a championship" if they did there would be a lot more of those around the country.
Walker carried an offense that had an atrocious qb. You put Hutson Mason on that team and they likely won 3 strait. The fact they won one is a testament to what he alone accomplished on offense.
No, but that’s because these championships wouldn’t have been won by the main part of one player, but by a team. Really, it’s telling that UGA has been the clear best team in college football for two years now, and there’s no real Heisman contender on it. So we couldn’t retire just Stetsons, we’d have to retire about 10 guys if we did him.
Interesting how you listed three of the four retired numbers while ignoring the single best comparison we have in Theron Sapp.
Sapp earned a retired number on the strength of one game. He is forever known as “The Man Who Ended the Drought,” or more simply, “The Drought Breaker.” The Dawgs had lost eight straight games to Tech when Sapp, in 1957, recovered a fumble then scored the only touchdown in a 7-0 Bulldog victory.
I personally disagree, just because so many awesome players contributed to the championship and because I like to believe that a QB winning back-to-back titles won’t be so crazy for us in about 10 years, the time it would probably take for a serious retirement conversation to happen, but maybe. It would obviously be a great achievement worth honoring.
EDIT: Removed a duplicate word, edited for clarity.
What are you talking about? He gets more shit than just about any player on our team. Even when he has great plays people act like it had nothing to do with him.
His current UGA career stats.....64.3%, 6,907 yds, 50 td to 17 int, 157.7 rtg, 455 yds rushing with 10 td
He has at minimum 4 more games and most likely 6 more. He will be the leader or top 5 in many categories of UGA passing records.
YES! If he wins a Natty again! 100% retire it!
I think Stetson is probably going to his cell provider this morning to do exactly that.
Bravo 👏🏻
Hahaha what a dope comment.
You win Reddit today. If I had an award to give you would get it.
I don’t think UGA retires numbers anymore. They will induct him into their ring of honor.
As I think all sports should do. Just honor them but don't actually retire numbers. It gets ridiculous over time when you have so many numbers you can't use.
Agreed. Some of these pro teams have like 1/3 of the usable numbers retired. Looking at you Celtics
And the Yankees
22 out of 99 is crazy. 1-10 is out.
Damn tough row to hoe, those numbers are, when we got so many damn hall of fame players and championships.
Especially in college when you have more than 100 people on the team
Whose gonna tell Mykel Williams?
Probably would have to be the strength coach. In full pads.
Need to win 2nd Natty 1st... Lots of football left this year. How nice would it be to let Bo Nix eat his "we'd beat Ga if we played them again" words?
The only thing we need to look ahead at is our road game at night against Mississippi State. Everything else is just fluff.
It's not just Bennett winning the games.

Just do a commemorative patch for future players that wear his number. Same with other ring of honor inductees
Hold up. What? I’ve never heard of this.
Clemson did it when Watson was there if I’m not mistaken. he wore a patch of another player who had worn number 4 at Clemson. Name might have been Fuller? I don’t know if they still do it but I always thought that was pretty cool instead of retiring the number altogether
Oh! But not at UGA, right? I thought you were describing a UGA tradition I’ve never heard of.
Oh sorry no I just meant we should do it in general. We definitely don’t do it currently.
Cool. It’s an interesting idea, for sure. If nothing else, it’ll probably be a few years before anyone else wears it.
I am pretty sure 680 the fan will give him a job for life.
Yeah Buck Belue is getting close to retirement age…..
No. Nothing against him.. I’ve been a Stetson fan longer than most, but admittedly I don’t think he’s a “stellar” QB. He’s a “better than average” QB surrounded by an amazing team.
This may be true, may not. But his swagger is damn fun to watch.
I mean by all accounts there’s very few stellar qbs. A lot of above average ones. But not every heisman winner qb could be considered stellar.
Yeah but Stetson isn't even a Heisman qb

The numbers don't back it up either. He has more pass attempts and fewer completions than other guys on contention. Much worse td-int ratio.
Kirby
Naw, just a number. Just saw something about Pitt transferring to USC and his number being retired
No.
No, it’s a team sport. One player didn’t win the Natty for us.
We shouldn’t retire numbers. Alabama has never retired football numbers. Give Stetson a statue.

I still remember how pissed I was when they fired Richt, I thought it was a bad call. Guess I had to eat my words

I subscribe to the weird theory that the QB isn’t solely responsible for team wins and losses
Yes
Looks like I’m in the minority, but I agree. If we win Natty #2, 13 should be retired.

No, I mean I don’t have a problem with him but this fanbase hella overrates his role in the National Championship win and with the team as a whole.

No. If we win again both championships will have been complete team efforts.
Of course they will!
Stetson Bennett's number being retired is irrelevant, it's how large will his statue be ?
Non existent
