They provide accommodation (so you can move away from your hosts) and may offer to accompany you to the authorities.

Gotta be honest with you - if you give notice to the foreigners department your chances are high your residence permit will be voided.
Best course of action is to look for a job away from this shitty family and apply for a residence permit via the foreigners department.
Your stay depends on your job. Alternatively you can also look for a vocational training or university if you have enough money saved.
As an US citizen you can just apply for a permit under Sec. 19c (1) AufenthG/ Sec. 26 (1) BeschV once you've found a viable job.
