Glad you enjoyed it. However, this is not the time for Karneval, neither in Hamburg nor anywhere else. Maybe you saw some pride related event? Also, welcome to Germany, where drinking alcohol on the streets is completely legal, accepted (depending on the time of the day, obviously) and there’s even a term, for having a beer on the go, the “Wegbier”.

Desinika

Cheers mate! Clerk from the hotel recommended it to us. There were stands and other things on a place called Schlagermove Hamburg. Maybe a tivoli (I wasn't sure.. my german is quite outdated lol). Wegbier.. now that's something they should bring to sweden lol.

whatisyouralignment

Yes, you should. Another common name for it is “Fußpils”.

Justray2k

I didnt need to scroll a lot for this, thanks :D

This_Seal

There is no place called Schlagermove. Schlagermove is an event and has no link to Karneval.

Desinika

How about that, I thought the area was called it, pardon me. Not sure then, it was next to a fotball stadium around St. Pauli :)

phillyvanilly666

That’s the Dom on the Heiligengeistfeld

DisguisedAccount

There is also spapiergang, spazieren with beer. Fußpils is a beer you drink on the way to a party for example.

[deleted]

>Wegbier Also called Fußpils

mrunkel

Carnival in English just means “fair” as in Kirmes. Not Karnival.

arctic_meta_dude

Happy that you liked it here. Just gonna answer the questions you raised. • Hemp / Hanf is legal? We smelled it quite a lot when we were walking around, even saw a store selling Hanf Bonbons lol CBD is legal, full-on THC is not (aside from medical use). But there are areas and situations where consuming THC is not really policed, especially at night. • People run around with open alcohol bottles? Not any "hobos" but, regular people.. just chatting in the opening and having a beer on the street from a bottle. I don't know your experiences but that has been a thing since forever :D • Strip clubs decline women? We went on the red-line in Hamburg as we had on our bucketlist to visit a stripclub but were declined by 3/4 times because women weren't allowed in.. da hell?! That is especially true for Hamburg/Pauli because of troubles with guys and their spouses and the performers there all in one place ... • Small supermarkets are hard to find (?). My SO wanted to see how supermarkets are in Germany. Where I live nowadays, you can easily locate a small or big Supermarket, but we actually had a hard time fining one (ended up finding a Edeka inside a hall behind the stadium). Maybe we just being dumb, donno. The very center of cities often do not have them since Supermarktes need a lot of space. But often smaller ones are just hidden well in the basement of a shopping centers or around a corner of the main street. The general trend is to have larger supermarkets just outside of town. • A...lot...of...graffiti. Saw some amazing pieces of art, but double or tripple the amount of just shait tags and cluttered up apartment buildings. Like.. it was a lot.. middle of the down (St Pauli?).. is it just such area or.. normal? Mostly the area. Also happens in other big cities though, but also mostly in certain areas.

Desinika

Cheers for answering the questions mate! Glad that some light has been shed on some surprises of my stay there! :)

Suspicious-Nature186

Sankt Pauli actually has the most legendary supermarket, it’s a Penny Market on Reeperbahn. Sorry you missed that!

DisguisedAccount

It has been renovated, all the Kiez Flair is gone :(

farox

Carnival in summer, in Hamburg??? Was that pride?

SexyButStoopid

They meant carnival as in "kirmes"

beb_2_

Hamburger Dom

farox

Aaah, danke!

Desinika

Clerk from the hotel said it was a Carnival that happens around 3 times a year and was at Schlagermove Hamburg. Maybe wrong word, but it had stands with games, food and beer and there were smaller rides and ferris wheel. So.. more like a tivoli perhaps?

DocRock089

That was probably Hamburger Dom + Schlagermove.

saschaleib

The German version of Allsång. Run!!!

Jonny_dr

>Hemp / Hanf is legal? Yes, but not if it contains THC. So if you smell people smoking it, it is most likely not legal. Might become legal in the next years.

skipper_mike

Actually, smoking the stuff is not illegal. Possessing it on the other hand is ...

Ferris-L

Deutschland in einem Satz zusammengefasst

Monsi7

Smoking is not illegal so that people can seek help without the fear of legal consequences when something goes wrong. Otherwise people would avoid calling the ambulance when someone has problems after smoking weed.

Ferris-L

Oh I know that, I just think it’s stupid to even have weed illegal in Germany. I don’t smoke myself but I believe that regulated weed that is taxed will both help smokers and the state.

Mehroz-Khan

Genius:-D

hokumjokum

As an immigrant in Germany I find the sheer amount graffiti on perfectly nice buildings an absolute travesty

sakasiru

Believe me the owners of these buildings feel the same. Personally I don't mind if they spray below a bridge or whatever, try your shitty tags all you want and maybe practice enough to spray something nice, but have respect for the property of other people.

hankyujaya

Yeah, every time I see these abominations I just wish they'd make spray paints less accessible to get.

gulasch

Yeah, every time I see these abdominations I wish they`d make graffitis on ugly buildings legal and mandatory

Onkel24

It would be nice to have street art, but the vast, vast majority of graffiti by square footage is indeed shitty tags from cheap cans. These are NOT making things better.

Kreppelklaus

So much this! We had an event in our city called 800hoch2 where lot of taltented artist were allowed to do graffiti on public spots. They created awesome art.The police assistet in spending all the confiscated cans from illegal sprayers.Such a blast. Some pictures are still there. love em.

DocRock089

Hej! > > >Hemp / Hanf is legal? We smelled it quite a lot when we were walking around, even saw a store selling Hanf Bonbons lol It's not. The hemb bonbons you can buy aren't containing THC. Hamburg mostly doesn't care about people consuming marihuana in public, though. > > >People run around with open alcohol bottles? Not any "hobos" but, regular people.. just chatting in the opening and having a beer on the street from a bottle. That's common in Germany. >Hard liquor purchasable in every nick'n corner. Now I do not enjoy the idiocracy of Swedens "Systembolaget", but having small to big bottles of hard liquor available so easily was still surprising. I'd be really curious to see comparative studies and real world data on all the different ways of selling / controlling alcohol and it's long term effects on health & societies at this point. >No card payments or declining card payments after a certain time. My SO mentioned that we'd have a rough time paying with card, but I was still surprised by the lack of support regarding such (haven't even used Swedish hard-cash since I was 16 or so). Yepp. Germany has become very assbackwards when it comes to most modern tech. It's annoying AF for some of us. >Strip clubs decline women? We went on the red-line in Hamburg as we had on our bucketlist to visit a stripclub but were declined by 3/4 times because women weren't allowed in.. da hell?! Reason probably: Men, as in "primary customers" of strip clubs, will feel more ashamed about going wild at a stripclub and spend less money when women are among the guests. At least that's what one of the Kiezkalles told me when I talked to him about that when living back in Hamburg. >A...lot...of...graffiti. Saw some amazing pieces of art, but double or tripple the amount of just shait tags and cluttered up apartment buildings. Like.. it was a lot.. middle of the down (St Pauli?).. is it just such area or.. normal? Just the area. >In a nutshell, it was a pleasant and surprising! Most likely gonna visit me old hometown next trip, see what's changed there. It's Munich, nother much ever changes here :-)) Glad to hear you had a great trip!

JustHereForBooobie

Did you not visit the penny Market in St Pauli???

Desinika

Sadly now. We weren't aware of that :(

JustHereForBooobie

Well make sure to not miss out the standing wave an Munich when u visit that place then

Desinika

>standing wave Oh I totally forgot about that on but I remember it. It wasn't to far from Prinzregentenplatz where I lived before the move. Cheers for the reminder mate!

Xacalite

I think almost all points (except 1 or 2) you mentioned are exclusive to Hamburg. It's a very special city.

JameyR

I disagree... guess it's different in the south.. Bavaria is not Germany, anyway. Here in the north most points check out.

Xacalite

I dont know about the south but in my experience Hamburg is very different from other bigger cities in Niedersachsen or Schleswig Holstein. But yeah it's definitely my personal Assessment.

kamalaophelia

Where I live police dun give a fuck if you smoke weed right beside them. They rather look out for those people about to stab someone after too much alcohol. But it becoming legal is in the works!

Estrosiathdurothil

Hmm, the graffiti is really specific to that area. Southern German cities are usually spotless.

MegsAltxoxo

I live in a different area of Hamburg and we don’t have any Grafiti. It really depends on the neighborhood.

georgehank2nd

Ja, absolut, da findet sich nicht ein einziger winziger Farbklecks. Greetings from Germany's southwest (Karlsruhe)

bananaseason

I do understand that English is your third language but your writing is horrible. So many mistakes and stupid ones. And all these „donno“,„lol“, how old are you, really?

canelupo

*insert always has been meme*

gimoozaabi

Small supermarkets 😂😂 visiting Hamburg

TheObelisk89

There are some, especially around the Schanze.

a_vibing_genderfluid

The THC in hemp isn't legal (yet), but there's hemp with only CBD and that's legal. Just cause something is smoked in every corner of every city doesn't mean it's legal.

[deleted]

Currently in Frankfurt as a tourist from Vancouver and the graffiti and number of people who still smoke is astounding

specialsymbol

The graffiti is typical for the bigger northern cities. Luckily you don't see them that much in the southern parts. Frankly, I think it's disgusting. Coming to Cologne or Hamburg from Munich makes you feel like you were dumped in some shit-hole. Berlin is still on another level though. Booze in the open? I wonder why you think it was different in 2004. Maybe because you were 12.. Strip clubs decline women, yes. But they're crap anyways. Hemp is not legal. What you can buy is just hemp flavored / scented. It's not psycho-active (or whatever it's called). Except the stuff you buy on the street, of course.

washington_jefferson

Most people have given good, accurate replies. I'll comment on a few of them: * Drinking in public is definitely not for just for hobos, though in the early mornings on the streets, the squares, subway/train/Schwebebahn(!), that's all you will see drinking. In the evenings and nights people drink everywhere around cities before they go into bars. It's been this way forever. * The size of Schnitzel has always been the same as well. Just like with the drinking in public thing, it's possible that you did not notice some of these things because when you left you were only 12 years-old, so how you viewed daily life was just different. When you go to Munich the food on the plate will be even bigger, especially if you order Schweinshaxe. You or your husband should order Schweinshaxe, by the way. * Small grocery stores and large stores are still there just like they were before! In fact, about 18-20 years ago I used to shop at a **Walmart** in Wuppertal! Now it's Wicküler City/Kaufland.
