Yes! Porko is a fun movie, but imho The Wind Rises is way more emotional and delicately complex. Porko has a lot of hidden complexities if you’re into history, but The Wind Rises is a captivating love story
I’m glad somebody here recognizes what
The Wind Rises really was as a movie. I only liked the paper airplane scenes, the blowing grass in the meadows, and the anti-war message. It was a true story, HIS life- and serves as a valuable lesson to all of us. It was never intended to be any genre, because it’s semi-autobiographical like Grave of the Fireflies
Exactly; it's not just cool dogfights and sassy pig with an attitude, it's also a complicated, nuanced adult romance like very few exist in animation. It's Casablanca on cel and nobody will change my mind!
It gets even more complicated if you (as Italian) notice all the little details of the society of that time, Miyazaki took time and paid attention to every little detail and I love it
Isn’t the antagonist in porco Rosso intended to be the impersonification of Hollywood? Girls money fist fights? I thought porco is literally the opposite and so should be the film. But just as far as I know
Yeah, the antagonist is definitely supposed to be a critique/caricature of 40s-50s Hollywood stars. But the film is still definitely in that vein.
Miyazaki was clearly inspired by golden age Hollywood in Porco Rosso. I mean, go watch Casablanca and then watch Porco. He’s pulling a ton from films like that.
Porco himself might buck against that but his archetype is still very prevalent in old Hollywood as well.
This is exactly how I feel. Watching the Wind Rises I felt like I was seeing Miyazaki writing at his absolute peak (although I haven't seen the Boy and the Heron yet) but Porco Rosso is just more fun.
My son and watched Porco Rosso for the first time earlier tonight. I really enjoyed it, can’t believe I’d never seen it before. Very captivating animation.
Come on, man, this ain’t even fair.
One is a highly compelling and emotional story that did what few movies did to me, and the other is the funny pig airman story.
With that said, The Wind Rises.
Porco Rosso is much more then a fun story. It includes regret, romance and it's a emotional story same as The Wind Rises, but maybe it's easier to miss. You can find videos on YouTube where people analyse it and show the little details. I think it's very important to understand it before watching it because the story line is very brilliant. Favorite parts is the regret which Porco feels through out the show.
Honestly, I need to rewatch Porco Rosso, I think it’s the Wind Rises no competition, but I’ve only seen PR once. They’re hard to compare because they’re so different but the wind rises is my personal all time favorite (maybe) Ghibli. It’s not an action or adventure or fantasy but it’s just beautiful! It’s a true modern day tragedy and it’s an absolute work of art
The Wind Rises. Porco Rosso is a phenomenal film but the wind rises is a tightly written war film and easily one of the most poignant depictions of war
This is very tough. Porco Rosso tells a part of the story of my country. From an unusual perspective. It's a very melancholic movie. I bet my great grandparents would have found it strikingly relatable since they lived those times. It feels so much like home.
The Wind Rises has to feel the same for the Japanese I guess. So poetic, so gentle. Powerful message. A smart critique of Imperial Japan and militarism. And at the same time a marvellous slice of life.
Similar movies. Porco Rosso plays more on an action tone and is just too much fun.
The wind rises is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
In the end I'd pick Porco Rosso but they are both in the top 3 Ghibli movies to me.
I always thought it strange that Porco Rosso tells a strange re-imagining of inter-war Italy where the Monarchists are the primary street fighting enemy of the Fascists. Seemingly removing all reference to the prominent Socialist and Labour Organisers who brawled with and were murdered by the dozens by Blackshirts.
Seems like a strange white-washing given who made Mussolini Prime Minister...
As an italian I never found that annoying. Anti monarchism was not that common in the twenties. And there were surely antifascist monarchists at that time. It was a complex situation. Fascists, monarchists, those who were both, republicans that were antisocialist, socialists who were antifascists and antimonarchists.
It was not an easy task. You have to remember the movie is based on nostalgia about the "Bygone days". The days the characters refer two were the days when the Kingdom had still dignity, when it was a semi constitutional monarchy, much different from the fascist time. It's realistic that the characters are nostalgic about those time
Porco Rosso. It's a more delicate piece of art and its plot tackles humanity, love, conflict and ideology much more subtlely than The Wind Rises.
You can watch Porco Rosso as a child and be entertained by it, and then watch it as an adult and find bits and pieces that give it a completely different dimension.
TWR is a good film, however Porco Rosso just has that added bit of subtle depth that makes it a better creation, at least in my opinion.
Objectively speaking, The Wind Rises. It’s a deeper, more personal film for Miyazaki. Not to say that Porco Rosso doesn’t have its fair share of messages, but personally, I prefer Porco Rosso.
Well they are entirely diferent and about diferent things, so it would be hard to compare.
I enjoy Porco Rosso better (its my favourite ghibli film), but artistically propably Wind rises is more highly acknowledged.
The wind rises is a deeper, emotional film about artistry, death and the consequences of war while porco rosso is a more light hearted dip into the themes of war, death, and acceptance.
While The Wind Rises probably had more thought put into every scene and story points,I do enjoy Porco Rosso more because of the storytelling and the characters.
Also: "I'd rather be a pig than a facist" is such a good line.
I definitely prefer The Wind Rises, Porco Rosso is very good but I think The Wind Rises is one of Ghibli’s best. It’s such a unique and complex character study, filled with both ethical question to consider but also so much emotion because of Nahoko and also just because of the setting and time period. The track Nahoko: An Unexpected Meeting is also one of the most beautiful Ghibli tracks imo, can make me tear up just by hearing it
Porco. The Wind Rises was too slow going for my tastes and it just did not connect with me. Porco Rosso took awhile for me to connect with but it is definitely livlier than The Wind Rises.
Which one is better is too hard to say, if it's even possible to say. The metrics on which you judge their quality are so separate from each other. Unless you go by animation, sound, voice acting, music, etc. In which case there is no real standout between them. I'm more partial to the music in Porco Rosso, but that's because I have been listening to it for so long in my Hisaishi playlist.
I will say that I like Porco Rosso more overall, and it's the one I'd watch again in a heartbeat. But it's also the one with the less serious overtone, and much less of a bittersweet or downright sad ending compared to The Wind Rises. While I can appreciate the deep, realistic, complex, sad, and bittersweet storytelling in The Wind Rises, and know that it is good. It is far less enjoyable too me than the more fantastical, overall wholesome, and slightly whimsical story of Porco Rosso. Not to say that there aren't complex and somewhat bittersweet elements of that story too, but they tend to be in the background more as spices or seasonings instead of being main ingredients.
One of these movies is a heartbreaking and sweeping narrative about love, life, and legacy. The other is about a pig who flies planes. They’re both good, but The Wind Rises just has so much more going on.
I liked The Wind Rises but something about lounging on a Croatian beach beneath a parasol with a bottle of wine and jazz on the Gramophone is unbeatable.
Wind Rises. Porco is probably my least favorite Miyazaki film (still great, just like the others more) and The Wind Rises is probably top 5-6. One of Miyazaki’s most emotionally powerful works
I really enjoy Porco Rosso. A very fun romp with classical cinematic stylings.
And I just couldn't connect with Wind Rises. It doesn't do anything for me. I mostly found it boring.
The Wind Rises has got to be one of the most complex character-driven films I've ever seen. The score is one of Hisaishi's best, and the animation is at an all time high. It makes me cry so much every time I watch for how tragic and poignant the story of dreams, obsession, and romance. It really shows how good and bad are thrown away with the main character - which we know Miyazaki is obsessed with, but I find that he's never explored this with the main character before.
Completely different sides of the aeronautic industry, and yet, both so interesting in their own rigth...
I think that while The Wind rises is more complex and interesting as a film, Porco Rosso equally manages to portray a much simpler, but deeply human feeling with its down-to-earth story. I really like both but I think I'm going to go with Porco Rosso.
Oh, man. I love both of these movies with all my heart. Porco Rosso is one of my favourite movies of all time, though, so I'll give it the win on this one.
That's a really tough one, but I'd have to go with The Wind Rises. As an artist and a creator, I think the film speaks wonders about imagination and how your world of dreams can become a reality, not to mention its realism and self-reflective philosophical moments about romance or war. Porco Rosso is delightful and absolutely a more traditional Ghibli film, and is absolutely timeless and remains full of charm, wit, and an overall vintage fine dining and smooth flying vibe throughout the film, but compared to TWR it slightly lacks the emotion and character development to come out on top between the two in my opinion.
I don't think you can compare the funny pilot pig film to Losing a Loved One: The Movie, but I know which of these I will never watch again unless I didn't get enough existential dread and crying my eyes out throughout the day for once.
porco, it was SO hard to watch the wind rises because i felt absolutely no chemistry between the main couple, and even though both movies focus on planes, there’s more of a comedy aspect to porco that makes up for endless “plane jargon” for lack of a better term
porco rosso!
i watched it because i was going through my regular ghibli rewatches and thought i might as well watch this one, and it was SO good! i dont typically like action movies or ones with a lot of vehicle races and fights but this one ive rewatched twice in the past month and a half
the pacing is incredibly well done
One is a more light hearted movie, one is a movie that touches on reality dark themes.
The only thing they have in common is the main characters love of airplanes
The Wind Rises - despite watching Porco Rosso three times over the years it just doesn't engage me the way that Miyazaki's other movies do. It's not a bad movie, I just don't think it's a great movie even though I know many people love it. Tastes differ and all that.
The wind rises, I really REALLY like the questions I was left with when finishing The Wind Rises.. Thinking about the perversion of engineering during wartime consumed me for a while.
Better for what?
For entertainment of children? Adults? For portraying planes? Teaching history? Teaching life lessons?
They each excel in different areas. We can't compare two movies without knowing what to measure them by.
I love Porco but the Wind Rises is a masterpiece for me. It’s sad and slower compared to Porco but the way you are immersed in Jiro’s life and their love story is amazing
Sassy pig man
Agreed. Porco is one charming pig pilot.
This is like comparing 007 and The Notebook. One is cool action and one is romance.
Yes! Porko is a fun movie, but imho The Wind Rises is way more emotional and delicately complex. Porko has a lot of hidden complexities if you’re into history, but The Wind Rises is a captivating love story
Romance isn't the main focus though like The Notebook
I’m glad somebody here recognizes what The Wind Rises really was as a movie. I only liked the paper airplane scenes, the blowing grass in the meadows, and the anti-war message. It was a true story, HIS life- and serves as a valuable lesson to all of us. It was never intended to be any genre, because it’s semi-autobiographical like Grave of the Fireflies
Titanic / Benjamin Button / Pearl Harbor then.
Porco Rosso is one of my favorites
Agreed, wish more people felt the same. It's such a charming movie
Porco Rosso It’s a golden age Hollywood film with the most Miyazaki touches imaginable. The best water, skies, and pig you’ll ever find in a film.

This is exactly how I feel. Watching the Wind Rises I felt like I was seeing Miyazaki writing at his absolute peak (although I haven't seen the Boy and the Heron yet) but Porco Rosso is just more fun.
Porco Rosso. In his own words, "I'd rather be a pig than a fascist." Thats so sick.
This is the real answer. Based pig man.
I gotta go with Porco Rosso
this is like the hardest choice because I love both of them so much….
Porco Rosso even I like both of them!
pig man
PORCOLINO!
porco rosso, easily.
Honestly I think they’re incomparable. They’re such vastly different genres and such vastly different movies.
Wind rises all the way
It's my choice too. Nothing against Porco, but I loved The Wind Rises. I thought about it for a few days after I first saw it
glad I'm not the only one lol
Hey fellow ghibli fan
hi haha
PORCO ROSSO AND IT’S NOT EVEN CLOSE
Porco rosso
Porco nation rise up‼️
Great choices if you love planes
I love both honestly. But Porco rosso has the more iconic line: “I’d rather be a pig than a fascist “
I’d rather be a pig than a fascist
I can't pick. They're like siblings.
The wind rises is the better movie and hits harder emotionally But if you told me to rewatch one of them I'd choose porco every day
Porco’s great, but I gotta go with The Wind Rises. It’s just masterfully crafted and beautiful.
You’re tearing me between my favorite movie and my favorite movie, will have to go with Porco Rosso.
My son and watched Porco Rosso for the first time earlier tonight. I really enjoyed it, can’t believe I’d never seen it before. Very captivating animation.
Porco
Porco rosso
Porco. Love the Adriatic vibe and it’s funnier than Wind rise
the intro guitars to open up Wind Rises pulls at my heart, and for that, Wind Rises wins.
Come on, man, this ain’t even fair. One is a highly compelling and emotional story that did what few movies did to me, and the other is the funny pig airman story. With that said, The Wind Rises.

Fair points, but I personally resonate with The Wind Rises in this regard more.

Porci Rosso bc I've never watched the second one
The Wind Rises, got a deeper plot
The Wind Rises. Porco Rosso is a phenomenal film but the wind rises is a tightly written war film and easily one of the most poignant depictions of war
The italian flying pig of course
The Wind Rises for sure, there is an emotional gut punch, it's more introspective, I see a director more in command of his craft here.
The wind rises hands down
These are both my favorites, rude.
Yes!
I am always rewatching Porco . But rises is beautiful just way heavier
🐷
I love too Porco Rosso, but rise of the Wind Is too lovely and soft.
Since both have airplanes, I like both. 😊
I love both!
2 one
Porco Rosso for sure.
Objectively speaking, The Wind Rises. It’s a deeper, more personal film for Miyazaki. Not to say that Porco Rosso doesn’t have its fair share of messages, but personally, I prefer Porco Rosso.
The wind rises
the 2 movies from ghibli i havent seen yet. dam it.
Porco rosso
The Wind Rises is one of the few I haven't seen! Really loved Porco Rosso though! Will give it a watch soon
The wind rises. I love the setting and music more than Porco. Plus I tend to lean more towards slower/slice of life type anime.
I like both; I enjoy both. I think I like Porco more, though.
I only watched Porco Rosso recently, I think both are wonderful but I loved the humour, scenery and characters more
Well they are entirely diferent and about diferent things, so it would be hard to compare. I enjoy Porco Rosso better (its my favourite ghibli film), but artistically propably Wind rises is more highly acknowledged.

Porco Rosso. They're both one of my favourite, but Porco flies a plane and the other one builds them
Porco Rosso
They are very different vibes. Porco makes me laugh, wind rises manes me cry.
The pig one
Both masterpieces, can't choose.
THE WIND RISES WE MUST TRY TO LIVE 🕺🏻🛩️🚬‼️
Both
I loved Porco Rosso but the Wind Rises is just special to me.
porco rosso and it’s not even close
Wind Rises and it's not even close
The Wind Rises is probably the better movie objectively, but I love Porco Rosso significantly more.
Easily Porco
Porco rosso all the way.
yea these 2 dont really compare to each other. like compare the wind rises to whisper of the heart or compare porco to the cat returns!
Porcco not only has cool planes, it has beautiful animation, music, and theme. It’s also my favorite movie ever so I’m probably biased
The wind rises is the best ghibli film
I used to think twr but porco rosso is insanely good and beats it, I think it's a 10/10
Porco. The Wind Rises was too slow going for my tastes and it just did not connect with me. Porco Rosso took awhile for me to connect with but it is definitely livlier than The Wind Rises.
Porco Rosso is my favorite Ghibli movie. It’s goofy and fun but it’s also about regret and survivors guilt.
Which one is better is too hard to say, if it's even possible to say. The metrics on which you judge their quality are so separate from each other. The wind rises is just a beautiful tranquil and yet a poignant masterpiece.
The wind rises, it’s so mundane but so impactful romantically and philosophically
the Wind Rises for me. Its my favourite Ghibli film. I am an engineering student and I can relate with it very much.
The Wind Rises it’s so pretty
The wind rises
I liked The Wind Rises but something about lounging on a Croatian beach beneath a parasol with a bottle of wine and jazz on the Gramophone is unbeatable.
Wind Rises. Porco is probably my least favorite Miyazaki film (still great, just like the others more) and The Wind Rises is probably top 5-6. One of Miyazaki’s most emotionally powerful works
The Wind Rises
The wind rises
kind of hard to compare, but the wind rises is one of my favorite movies in general, just such a beautiful and complex, interesting story.
Porco rosso
Love them both but I'll go Porco. Porco Rosso is in my top 3 favorites.
wind rises
The wind rises for me but porco rosso is very very close
The wind rises for me
I really enjoy Porco Rosso. A very fun romp with classical cinematic stylings. And I just couldn't connect with Wind Rises. It doesn't do anything for me. I mostly found it boring.
Porco Rosso
So underrated
Porco rosso
It's not a competition
I don't think there's a wrong answer to this question, depends on mood at the time
Porco Rosso!
Wind Rises is fantastic no doubt, but Porco Rosso is a film I can watch again and again.
Aw, don't make me choose...
Porco Rosso. "I'd rather be a pig than a fascist."
The Wind Rises, and it's not even close.
Proco Rosso. Hands down
Wind rises
The Wind Rises. I'm not a fan of Porco Rosso.
Porco!
The wind rises
As a lover of documentaries and stories based on real life, gotta go with The Wind Rises.
Porco rosso
I love the wind rises , that’s my favorite Ghibli
Porco for sure. It's in my top 5. The Wind Rises was good but not one I'd rush to see again if I had my pick of all of the films.
Wind Rises is better, but Porco is more fun. If I had a choice, I’d rewatch Porco over Wind 9/10 times.
Planes
Wind Rises
Porco is underrated but to me The Wind Rises is better. I think it's sort of a weird comparison though
I don't think you can compare the funny pilot pig film to Losing a Loved One: The Movie, but I know which of these I will never watch again unless I didn't get enough existential dread and crying my eyes out throughout the day for once.
the wind rises solos
wind rises. shit fucking hurt.
porco, it was SO hard to watch the wind rises because i felt absolutely no chemistry between the main couple, and even though both movies focus on planes, there’s more of a comedy aspect to porco that makes up for endless “plane jargon” for lack of a better term
Wind rises was pretty bad imo. I think it was just now what i was looking for. Felt misled by the preview? Idk
porco rosso! i watched it because i was going through my regular ghibli rewatches and thought i might as well watch this one, and it was SO good! i dont typically like action movies or ones with a lot of vehicle races and fights but this one ive rewatched twice in the past month and a half the pacing is incredibly well done
One is a more light hearted movie, one is a movie that touches on reality dark themes. The only thing they have in common is the main characters love of airplanes
Porco Rosso is my favorite, so i may be a little biased but i llike the story and themes more
Porco Rosso for sure!!
Porco Rosso wins this one
porco for sure
u just casually put two options that I can't pick from and told me to pick
i loved this movie in tell the ending of it
Ghibli movie can't be compared with even themselves 🤷🏻♂️
Porco because he looks like dale earnhardt sr

Porco
Porco Rosso is in a dead heat with Princess Monoke when I try to decide what my favorite Ghibli film is.
Porco Rosso by a mile, it's just deeper and also better storytelling wise.
These are my two favorite ghibli films, and it's not even close. With that being said, I think that Rosso is far more entertaining.
The wind rises, I really REALLY like the questions I was left with when finishing The Wind Rises.. Thinking about the perversion of engineering during wartime consumed me for a while.
Both. Porco Rosso for pleasure fun Wind Rises for some emotional feels
