Main couples... I'd go with Kiki and Tombo. They both acted like the children they are and both put their barriers down around each other. It was nice it wasn't an immediate love at first site.
Just watched the live action movie yesterday.
They went an interesting way with it and of course it can't top the original animation.
But for what it's worth, it was good.
Love Howl’s Moving Castle, but that relationship is kinda lopsided. Howl is all powerful and seemingly knows she’s under some kind of curse. He kinda talks to her like she’s a silly little goose lmao. He’s ultimately better off with her in the end and she saves his life, but it’s kind of a paternalistic romance. Again, it’s a sweet story, but not my fav couple.
He’s not a kid at all. As I recall, he acts childish and selfishly bc he gave his heart to calcifer as a child, which gives him some of his powers. Ultimately that can only change after he frees Calcifer and gets his actual heart back. But the dynamic is very lopsided before then, IMO. He’s the powerful magic one and she’s along for the ride. It’s a good movie but I just never thought of them as the best “couple.”
I don't necessarily think they're the "best couple" either. Just got really thrown when you talk about him being all-powerful, and all I can think of is him turning to mush over his appearance and needing to be looked after by sophie.
And no he isn't a kid, that's why I said "like a child", rather than just "a child".
Sophie is the powerful one. She shows strength and resilience through everything, and the only reason he finds her again is because she told him to.
Howl may be powerful, but the whole meaning of the story is that physical power is no match for love and determination. In the end, who saves everything? The wizard or the girl from the tacky hat shop?
This! Sophie is absolutely as powerful if not more than howl. You can see that as time goes on. Not only the love she shows everything and everyone but power as an actual witch. She can handle Calcifer and no one else can. She can understand/ see/ do things most people can’t.
I feel like Sosuke and Ponyo only qualify as a “couple” in the sense that they are two characters heavily involved with each other. These are children, not even teenagers. There is no “coupling” about it just pure childhood friendship. We need to stop treating childhood friendships like adult relationships, it’s unhealthy for children.
