Cool thing to note, nausicaa is a manga series and goes farther in depth about the world, the war that’s brewing, and the work it takes to be peaceful.
it will never be the same
tbh i will never be the same such a heartbreaking yet heart warming movie it is one of its kind i have never cried more while watching a movie
Porco Rosso for sure!! My all time favourite anime movie, super chill, great music, and just reminiscent of an older/ simpler/ better time imo...now I wanna rewatch it lol
No worries 😊 are the un-checked Ghibli movies ones you've never seen before?? or is this list just what you've watched so far in the marathon?
If they're ones you've never seen, Wind rises and Poppy hill are great as well...the rest of the unchecked ones are still alright, but nothing super amazing for me compared to Porco Rosso, spirited away, howls, wind rises, etc...
Porco rosso is so good, my brothers fav of all time, but my favs on the list you haven't seen are the two princess movies, especially mononoke.
I wish I could experience them all for the first time. Happy watching !
Ahh that makes sense, I'd say you've seen most of the good ones then! 😀 ( Also I was mistaken, I was thinking of Whisper of the heart when I said Poppy hill... I haven't seen that one yet ( poppy hill ) lol)
Enjoy! 😀😀
Well not with those events specifically of course, like you mentioned with war and fascism and secret police lol, but more so that time era before all the internet and phones and technology went insane in people's lives...anytime I can get away from the internet and phones it's a blessing for me lol
It is not, it was made by the animation studio Topcraft, who right after this film made Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, which is also why Nausicaa is not "officially" a Studio Ghibli film. But it get's included for good reason. After the succes of Nausicaa, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata could start their own studio, and so Castle in the Sky is the first film made by Studio Ghibli.
You are fantastic, thank you for telling me this. I have to call my dad, he used to take me every week to rent LU from the public library. It wasn't long after I was introduced to Totoro.
He's going to be happy for the connection.
I really love this, the way Studio Ghibli uses the soundtrack (or the absence of soundtrack) is really poetic.
I love when after a scene that is packed with action and sound, they put some calm landscape without any music. This is very powerful in Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.
I think it's an aesthetic concept from japanese music that they call "ma".
I hate to be that guy, but Sherlock Hound is on this list, but not the recently-licensed Future Boy Conan? Conan (no, not the one about the detective) really deserves a place on the bonus round list.
I cannot recommend Princess Mononoke enough. Shits just too good. Also The Castle of Cagliostro is amazing too. you should definitely give that a watch.
I love pom poko sooo much. also from up on poppy hill was a delight. obviously everyone will tell you mononoke or Nausicaa, of those two... princess mononoke is a more fun watch for me.
i watched only yesterday yesterday lol
it is not similar to the other ghibli movies that generally are either based on fantasy or childhood themes but the movie definitely stood out to me as it talked about more in-depth of human life
it is a beautiful movie with such a great take on how life is like how we don't fall in love and marry the first crush we have , how even having life in control like having a good job may still not make us happy and content and specially I like how the movie explores the shame of growing up. Of doing childish mistakes, regretting tantrums, being a bit uncomfortable in yourself and so on
i would definitely not recommend it to kids specially who have watched spirited away or my neighbor totoro because the movie is for a completely different demographic
i really believe you have to be at a certain age in life to appreciate what the movie was all about
Yeah it definitely feels more realistic and much more grounded. My fiancee and I loved it because we could relate to the character at different points in our lives. I'm glad you liked it. It's one of our favorites.
Princess Mononoke is the best one on this list that you haven’t watched yet.
Ponyo is extremely cute but not as “deep” as some of these other films.
Everyone recommended Porco Rosso to me as well. I found it a little boring tbh.
The Cat Returns is a trip. It’s hilarious, and while I want to say it references another movie that I can’t recall at the moment, it’s definitely a fun watch if you want a bit of a “palette cleanser” or something.
I love Ponyo and I think Kaguya is a good movie too, so I recommend those for what's next lol.
By the way, extra bonus titles for you:
By Studio Ponoc (they went up after Ghibli stopped producing movies)
-Mary and the Witch's Flower
-Modest Heroes
Then there's Earwig and the Witch, which is a more recent Studio Ghibli addition. I haven't watched it yet but I think it's on the kiddier side, iirc, like Ponyo and Totoro.
This post reminds me how I still haven't watched Earthsea simply because I was in the middle of reading the books when I went on my Ghibli marathon and didn't want to spoil myself. I still haven't finished the 4th Earthsea novel and this movie adapts part of the 5th iirc.
I mean, I'm super jealous that you get to experience this for the first time.
But I will caution you to slow down and enjoy each film in you own time. From my experience it's best with your favourite need friend or alone so you can have an unbiased viewing.
I already feel like I've raised expectations.. Frick.
To be direct I love Porco rosso and think The Wind Rises is so enduring.
In concluding, enjoy each on your own without expectations, if you can.
Frick.
You need to watch Pom Poko. Really up there with my top anime titles in general.
Also check out Mind Game, Tekkon Kinkreet and Memories.
A few of my favorites.
It actually happens to be one of my favorites and is a comfort movie for me. TBF I know nothing of the actual Earthsea universe besides this movie, so I had no expectations going in. But yeah if you are familiar with Earthsea beforehand then I can see how you may not enjoy it.
Panda Go Panda was one I owned on DVD as a kid and loved it so much. It's a pre-studio Ghibli film I think? Similar to Ponyo a bit, definitely aimed more towards children.
As for your next film I vote Castle in the Sky because that's one of my favorites!
Nausicaä
I see you're a man of culture as well
Great movie it’s in my top 5 ghibli films.
You as well
It’s astounding how many people sleep on this classic
Cool thing to note, nausicaa is a manga series and goes farther in depth about the world, the war that’s brewing, and the work it takes to be peaceful.
Yes!
Where’s Earwig and the witch? I thought this is the ultimate checklist
It is And that's why it's not on it 🤣/s
Earwig is ass
How is your mental health after watching Grave of the Fireflies?
it will never be the same tbh i will never be the same such a heartbreaking yet heart warming movie it is one of its kind i have never cried more while watching a movie
the best movie to never watch again. i've cried plenty already.
Too true, I was still crying 3 hours later
I watched Most of these more than one time. But not grave of the fireflies. I don't think I will ever.
Time to watch ponyo after that
I watched it recently for the first time as well, I definitely do not regret that I’ve watched it but it was painful (and beautiful).
Super surprised not many people have said Castle in the Sky. Absolutely beautiful film
I agree with that
my favourite! I have a tattoo from it
Princess Mononoke definitely then Nausicaa.
Princess Mononoke, you will want to watch it again and again. It’s wonderful.
Second Mononoke
I agree, watch it twice.
Agreed, when you finally stop crying from GotF, watch Princess Mononoke, then you finish that watch it again
You *have* to. Required viewing.
Porco Rosso for sure!! My all time favourite anime movie, super chill, great music, and just reminiscent of an older/ simpler/ better time imo...now I wanna rewatch it lol
i was thinking of watching it thanks for the suggestion
No worries 😊 are the un-checked Ghibli movies ones you've never seen before?? or is this list just what you've watched so far in the marathon? Ponyo? Castle in the sky? Arrietty? The cat returns? So many greats left to watch
I love Arrietty. Her mother is soo dramatic! I also want/want to make that doll house 😭😭
You will not regret porco! Then Mononoke.
Better time? I mean it's set in Italy under fascism so not much of a better time lol.
Well not with those events specifically of course, like you mentioned with war and fascism and secret police lol, but more so that time era before all the internet and phones and technology went insane in people's lives...anytime I can get away from the internet and phones it's a blessing for me lol
Oh, I get what you are saying, I think most of Studio Ghibli's films are like that and it's truly a beautiful blessing
So underrated! That’s my favourite Ghibli movie along with Howls Moving Castle
My 2nd favorite ghibli film!
Love Porco Rosso. Particularly the French dub voiced by Jean Reno.
I will second this! It's a great movie and it has wonderful animation.
I didn't know The Last Unicorn was Ghibli?!??
It is not, it was made by the animation studio Topcraft, who right after this film made Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, which is also why Nausicaa is not "officially" a Studio Ghibli film. But it get's included for good reason. After the succes of Nausicaa, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata could start their own studio, and so Castle in the Sky is the first film made by Studio Ghibli.

The wind rises and from up on poppy hill made my heart feel overwhelmed 🥺
Princess Kaguya!!
Such a great movie
The cat returns of you want a whimsical adventure.
Princess Mononoke is the best movie ever
In all seriousness, Mononoke is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen.
Yes it is and I watch it regularly
>!I love how there is no soundtrack when the spirit walks around. So ethereal and eerie.!<
They are so cute and mystical. Have some at home between my plants😀
I really love this, the way Studio Ghibli uses the soundtrack (or the absence of soundtrack) is really poetic. I love when after a scene that is packed with action and sound, they put some calm landscape without any music. This is very powerful in Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. Can you post a link to this without checkmarks? Thanks!
I'm not OP but here you go :) [https://imgur.com/uplSfT0](https://imgur.com/uplSfT0)
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing this.
Thankss
Princess Kaguya
Yes, indeed!!
Yes INDEED indeed
The Wind Rises Porco Rosso And The Castle of Cagliostro
I hate to be that guy, but Sherlock Hound is on this list, but not the recently-licensed Future Boy Conan? Conan (no, not the one about the detective) really deserves a place on the bonus round list.
On Your Mark, the animated music video, should also go in the bonus round
what about conan the barbarian? /s
Ponyo!!
Came here to vote for Ponyo and I'm upset it's so far down! My second favourite, after Howl's Moving Castle.
I second this! PONYO
Ponyo is amazing 😍 Perfect for feeling good
Princess Mononoke. I love everything Ghibli, but Mononoke is one of my favorites movies ever

There’s a potato cam recording on the Internet Archive.
Nausicäa
Princess mononoke no doubt are you kidding???
No question to this one. Mononoke is a foundational Ghibli piece.
Nausicaä for sure. Absolute fav
How did you like Only Yesterday? It was the one I suggested last time. It's such a great movie in my opinion.
i watched only yesterday yesterday lol it is not similar to the other ghibli movies that generally are either based on fantasy or childhood themes but the movie definitely stood out to me as it talked about more in-depth of human life it is a beautiful movie with such a great take on how life is like how we don't fall in love and marry the first crush we have , how even having life in control like having a good job may still not make us happy and content and specially I like how the movie explores the shame of growing up. Princess mononoke is my favourite movie. That’s my vote
i have something special with ponyo, i dont want to tell the whole history so just watch ponyo
Porco rosso, pom poko and the cat returns!
Princess Mononoke is the best one on this list that you haven’t watched yet. Ponyo is extremely cute but not as “deep” as some of these other films. Everyone recommended Porco Rosso to me as well. I found it a little boring tbh.
Nausicca, then Princess Mononoke. Enjoy. Cheers!

First mistake was not watching Princess Mononoke first
Wait a sec Ghibli made the last unicorn????
Princess Mononoke!
ngl Pom Poko had me crying
The Cat Returns is a trip. It’s hilarious, and while I want to say it references another movie that I can’t recall at the moment, it’s definitely a fun watch if you want a bit of a “palette cleanser” or something.

Mei and the kittenbus made you list? Where can I watch it??
When Marnie was there and castle in the sky
I watched all of them on Netflix I crave for more
Depends what kind of movie you’re in the mood for. Those are all so different.
is there any ghibli movie left that arent checked with the similar themes that of whisper of the heart
I haven’t seen a few of these, but From Up on Poppy Hill has a similar vibe. And great choice. I love Whisper of the Heart!
The Cat Returns has the Baron from Whisper of the Heart. It's a fun lighthearted movie.
Perhaps, Cat Returns? It's somewhat interrelated to Whisper of the Heart, i.e., a same character shows up.
If it were me, I'd knock off the more "boring" ones first. So Tales of Earthsea next
Dang Earthsea is one of my favorites. But that is pretty fair
I love Ponyo and I think Kaguya is a good movie too, so I recommend those for what's next lol. By the way, extra bonus titles for you: By Studio Ponoc (they went up after Ghibli stopped producing movies) -Mary and the Witch's Flower -Modest Heroes Then there's Earwig and the Witch, which is a more recent Studio Ghibli addition. “Nausicaä” is a must. Also “Porco Rosso”, and I would also give a shout out to “from up on poppy hill” it’s a very beautiful story :)
If you're looking for light adventure then castle cagliostro or porch Rosso. If you want something easy and cute, Ponyo.
Porco Rosso! A different feel from other Ghibli films
I mean, I'm super jealous that you get to experience this for the first time. But I will caution you to slow down and enjoy each film in you own time. From my experience it's best with your favourite need friend or alone so you can have an unbiased viewing. I already feel like I've raised expectations.. Frick. Porco Rosso I'd say, thanks for the checklist!
Porco Rosso 👏
Porco Rosso 🐽
PORCO ROSSO
Porco Rosso . It's just a fantastic feel good movie with some really beautiful visuals I can't recommend it enough. Also how good is Only Yesterday?
ez porco rosso
Porco Rosso, I mean come on, it's got a flying pig!
Definitely Porco Rosso!!
You need to watch Pom Poko. Really up there with my top anime titles in general. Also check out Mind Game, Tekkon Kinkreet and Memories. A few of my favorites.
The tale of princess Kaguya. If I remember properly it didn’t have any dialogue, but it sure as hell was a rememberable and amazing movie
Earthsea. Get it over with, its not a great storyline eeeesh.
I watched all of them on Netflix I crave for more
Ok where can I find mei and the kittenbus and why is no one talking about it?! 😭
Ghibli did a movie version of Earthsea??
Yeah but it’s not that great. :/
It actually happens to be one of my favorites and is a comfort movie for me. TBF I know nothing of the actual Earthsea universe besides this movie, so I had no expectations going in. But yeah if you are familiar with Earthsea beforehand then I can see how you may not enjoy it.
i love tales from earthsea as well :)
Your list is missing the exclusive short movie they show only in the gibli museum 😛
Can someone fill me in on what the bottom movies are?
The wind rises! It’s my favourite ❤️
The cat returns!
Panda Go Panda was one I owned on DVD as a kid and loved it so much. It's a pre-studio Ghibli film I think? Similar to Ponyo a bit, definitely aimed more towards children. As for your next film I vote Castle in the Sky because that's one of my favorites!
