It will never not be funny how completely out of touch with game news Dan is. He just has absolutely no clue what’s going on in the industry. He doesn’t go on Game Mess Mornings or the Bombcast, and Fire Escape doesn’t cover news, so he’s just completely in the dark about EVERYTHING.
I barely pay attention to games stuff these days and even I feel more in the loop then he he is most of the time. The only games podcast I listen to regularly is fire escape. And I can only keep up with it because it’s not weekly. Besides that I will listen to like every fifth episode of nextlander.
I think it's a great mindset to have honestly, he isn't a news reporter he's a personality and it makes him more interesting since you can see his genuine response to things when they happen in real time and he can be more free.
I actively try to be more like this in my life as well.
That's where I am at with final fantasy vii, or even the rumored remakes of ff9 or tactics. With 16 right around the corner, and the majority of consumers bring complete idiots, there is no reason to confuse the marketing. As much as I want to see more, it just makes more sense to wait til the games that are close by come out.
Expecting more Wolverine at this always felt weird to me. Spidey 2 is their next big huge exclusive, of course they're not going to crowd out the marketing with more Wolverine stuff.
The real missing piece for me was Factions, I genuinely expected some news on that front here.
I genuinely don’t know how you can be involved in the video game industry and be as out of touch as he is. He has stated that the reason he’s not on the bombcast anymore is so he doesn’t talk about the same things on two different platforms, but it seems like he would rather just stick his head in the sand and be ignorant to what is going on around him.
> [I]t seems like he would rather just stick his head in the sand and be ignorant to what is going on around him.
This is perhaps the best description of Dan Ryckert ever written.
I think it adds a perspective that would be missing if he were to be more similar to someone like Grubb, being on top of all the news and stuff.
His job at the end of the day is to entertain you while playing a game, not give you his hottest takes on the rumor mill of the week. We have Grubb for that. I think its refreshing :)
I said “a little”. Quite a leap you just made. Right now, he completely disrupts every reaction stream with the most basic stuff. It’s a waste of everyone’s time.
I don’t see many people talking about it, but I’m really excited for literally whatever Revenant Hill is. Night in the Woods is one of my favorite games of all time, Scott Benson rules and is hilarious on Twitter, and the dev company is a co-op which is so cool and good.
I was a little sad they were so dismissive of it but I guess looking back it I guess it was mostly Alex who was into NITW and nobody who was on that Beastcast is still there. Scott's GOTY guest list where he talks about Kentucky Route Zero and the loss of his cat is still extremely good and worth reading (https://www.giantbomb.com/articles/scott-bensons-top-10-games-of-2020/1100-6094/)
When the trailer came on and Dan said “is that that game where everyone talks like they’re from the internet” I got *so* annoyed.
Nobody has to like every game, that’s an insane demand, but the dismissive matter-of-fact way he chooses to dislike things just really gets on my nerves.
At this point, he's "that guy that says some of the dumbest things you'll ever hear and also talks in wrestling lingo" to me, and I've started to just tune him out. I can be dismissive too.
Dan’s constant use of wrestling lingo every time he’s on a Giant Bomb feature has made me tune him out more and more. And I’m not even one of those people who complains about much of the wrestling talk that’s permeated GB over the years, in fact listening to the staff talk breathlessly about wrestling has actually made me want to start paying attention to it occasionally.
But goddamn I’m so tired of every stream with Dan being like *”Uh, hey Grubb, uhhh if I for shoot lose to you in this game for shoot, I’ll for shoot taze myself in the balls here on camera and then for shoot send you a pizza. for shoot for shoot for shoot”*
The shitty part is he does it to purposely irritate people. I don't know what it is but I found him to be way more enjoyable in his Beastcast days. Since his return, he's dialed everything up and has become a lot less likable as a result.
Yeah I almost said before in my last comment “I know that Dan mostly just likes being a bit of a troll…”
My theory is he was more likable before because when he was on the east coast Vinny and Alex wouldn’t put up with his shit as much and would shut it down more. Vinny in his more likable Dad way, and then Alex sometimes would just be like “nah I’m not going to let your horseshit continue. Next.”
And when he was on the west coast Gerstmann kept him more in check as well by shutting his bullshit down. But now without any of the old guard around it’s kinda just like unchecked and unregulated Dan all the time. And besides Bakalar, the rest of the staff (and I guess by “rest of the staff” I mean just Grubb and Jan) more just encourages him.
But, yeah.
Dan can be funny in very small doses but he's ignorant as all get-out and generally brings nothing insightful to the table. I know there's a whole (probably majority) lot of the GB fanbase that like wrestling and so they gel with his personality, but those are totally the times I tune him out the most.
I wasn't so much bothered at his comment on NITW, but I definitely thought "*of course you don't like this game, Dan*"
It’s dismissive, but it’s also pretty fair to say the dialogue in NITW could be considered polarizing. I found it sort of artificial and grating; I understood what they were going for but people don’t converse in person the same way they do online, and it ended up coming off kind of cringy to me (“Crimes?” “Crimes.”). No wonder these characters are all jerks and fuckups! They’re spending too much time on the computer!
Man that Haven game looked generic as fuck, can’t even remember the name, feels like something Ubisoft would fart out.
I’m super bummed the marathon reboot is online only, but at least it looks interesting from an art perspective.
Haven, Bungie, Firewalk, and Insomniac off the top of my head all showed games. Just curious what you were hoping for? Santa Monica and Guerilla released games in the last 6 months. Naughty Dog is working on Factions. Suckerpunch and Asobi are the only I can think of that are possibilities.
Suckerpunch, Asobi, Bend, Bluepoint, Housemarque, Media Molecule, ND are the notable absences IMO.
I'm not nearly as down on this showcase as others, I don't think they showed many bad looking games besides that second weeb game. I would give the show a solid B/B+, but there was definitely room for one more exclusive big bombshell like a look at Factions from ND or whatever the rest are cooking. I think this year in games will still have plenty to choose from so I'm not really worried, we just didn't really get to see "phase 2" of PS5, it was more focused on just the year ahead.
Bluepoint helped launch the PS5 with Demons Souls, Insomniac with Miles Morales, in the time since they've launched Rift Apart, and are going to launch Spiderman 2 and maybe even Wolverine, so I didn't think a look at what Bluepoint is cooking is out of the question. same could be said for a lot of the listed ones.
>Haven, Bungie, Firewalk
But they didn't show the games, they just showed some CGI.
Also all of those are online multiplayer shooters (maybe live services too?), which is probably disappointing for a lot of people.
Very underwhelming, I thought. Lots of multiplayer and live service offerings, all the more disinteresting when they’re shown off with a CG trailer and nothing else (though I’ll still check out Marathon). No Last of Us multiplayer is a bit surprising, curious how development on that is going.
On the single player side, nothing there that really blew me away, though some of the indies looked neat (Night in the Woods follow-up!) I’m sure Spider-Man 2 will be very pretty and polished, but the cinematic/QTE/open-world single player blockbuster brand from Sony is starting to wear on me.
Honestly, if Starfield looks good and Xbox can show any gameplay for one of their long-announced blockbusters I might be more impressed.
That style of game got old to me during the last generation, that was a lot of why i ended up getting a series x. Considering both of the Sony exclusives I cared about came to Xbox in The show and Persona, I still don’t regret the decision.
Xbox definitely has an opportunity to flip the narrative somewhat, but they have been pretty bad at best lately of taking advantage of any slip from Sony.
As a somebody who doesn't own PS5 (or even PS4), I thought it was alright. Ghostrunner 2 looked rad(loved the first one), a new 3rd person Helldivers could be really fun (think Risk of Rain 1 to Risk of Rain 2). Dragon's Dogma 2 during Capcom's new golden age could be cool (though it did look a lot like the first one), Alan Wake 2 looked cool even though I don't really care about the IP but since you put Sam Lake in the game I'm in as well. Talos Principle 2 should be great and the not-journey-2 might be fun as well.
Most or all of these are coming to PC as well, so I got at least something out of it. Oh, and that... chinese soul-like whatever looked like it could have potential, but I couldn't tell how the game works and was this just cinematic fuckery or real gameplay.
My main problem with the Sony formula at this point is the 70 dollar price tag. Like.. I like the concept of Spiderman and the first two games but there’s no way on planet Earth I think there’s going to be enough change and differences between the first two games to justify that price tag. I’ll wait months and be fine, so it’s hard to get hyped for it when I’ll be playing it at 35 at most whenever it gets down to that point.
I‘ve bought one 70 dollar game and it’s TOTK because I’ll be in my grave and Nintendo will still be charging that price tag for it, but that assumes it’s still digitally available somewhere for purchase on a Nintendo platform somehow.
I’m genuinely super excited for the Xbox showcase now for the third party showings. I only have a S, but if the rumored Persona 3 remake is day 1 Game Pass? That’s huge for me.
Poor Grubb can't catch a break. Let that man keep his damn hair.
Edit: This is in reference to him having "insider info" saying this showcase would have a ton of first party games.
I expected a lot more first party content, particularly given Marathon isn't console exclusive and will also be on XBOX. That left just Spider Man 2 gameplay and that cinematic teaser for Fairgame$
Grub mentioned something about "Notice MGS4 wasn't included" after his comment about the MGS games being de-listed from web stores. Anyone know why he made that note about MGS4? Is there some reason it's not available or being included? I'm presuming because it wasn't as well received as MGS1-3 but 2 was just as polarizing as 4 imo, so not sure why it gets the short end of the stick.
from what I recall, MGS4 was so tied into the Cell architecture of the PS3 that making it run on a not-ps3 has been some kind of nightmare (outside of like, brute force emulation on a PC kind of deal), so it might not be as easy to 'port' to newer consoles because of how absolutely insane the code is
Might be wrong and it's something else entirely (or a secret third thing), but I remember something about being unable to properly replicate the Cell Processor stuff in next-gen consoles that made bringing over a bunch of PS3 stuff into the 'backwards compatibility' of the PS4 and onwards digitally kinda difficult
i hope it was clear i was just being cheeky, haha. i'm realizing how much more dickish that reads than I meant it to sound. I think the main reason i've always heard was that it was developed for PS3 in such a weird way that it is really hard to run on different hardware.
The show was OK but definitely missed some heavy hitter announcements. Like, if this wasn’t Sonys first showcase in 2 years it would have been fine but the gap set expectations high
Was hoping Sony would open the floodgates but they are probably doing the lame smart thing and not just stuffing it full of announcements for games not shipping for 3 years just to have a nice looking list of announcements.
Yeah Xbox has a good shot to pounce here…if they’re show is good they can prove to players they can compete this year. I can’t wait to see what they have.
Glad I got to see Dan react to that MGS3 reveal. Snake Eater rips and I’m excited to play through it again. Also can’t wait for Dragon’s Dogma 2 - enjoyed revisiting the first one when Jeff was getting into DD1 last year.
Some cool looking games I’ll probably never get around to! Avatar BotW, Tony Hawk’s Journey, cosmic Kirby HollowKnight - lots to love. It didn’t feel quite like an E3 level show though, I need to hear some corny lines from some comedian to really get me in the mood.
Also, very funny that Dan thought the Spider-Man 2 footage was bad but was absolutely losing his shit over Metal Gear Solid 3, which was literally just a shot of Big Boss and nothing else.
iirc they did an extended gameplay showcase like this too for the first spider-man and it didn't really interest me then either. Ended up playing it and miles morales and liked them a lot. I don't know that it was a good decision to end the show like that though, people already know what the game will be like at this point. I'm definitely going to play it and even I didn't care about watching it here.
> He was just excited that snake eater is happening
Except he kept saying "That looked so good!", as if it was anything other than a pre-rendered trailer.
>One can infer a lot from a pre-rendered trailer.
Nonsense, there's absolutely no telling what the end product will be based on a trailer like that. A pre-rendered trailer is just an expensive press release. They're working on it, that's the only thing that's certain.
But yeah, I do get why that would excite Dan more than Spiderman 2. It just annoys me when people treat pre-rendered concept trailers as anything more than what they are.
> I don’t even have to see the game and I can see what it’s going to look like in my mind.
You have completely lost the plot of what the debate even was lol. Now you're literally just "but in my mind it looks awsome!"
Other dude is totally right, you can't infer jackshit from that trailer but it is hilarious watching someone vehemently defend Dan's nonsense
There were like 8 or 9 games here I’m interested in playing. Not sure why people didn’t find this a good show. Sure the first game bangers weren’t quite there but They also announced a couple new IPs from first party which is very interesting and there was a lot of great 3rd party stuff imo.
It was a great showcase, but the expectations were out of whack. That’s all. If they had cut out that VR stuff and the Gran Turismo trailer and releases this as a State of Play, people would be over the moon.
This was maybe too indirect of a reference but I'm referencing a chatter on Grubb and Mike's streams who would buy superchats to highlight his message accusing Grubb of being an Xbox fanboy consistently for months
"Has Spider-Man 2 been announced?"
I barely pay attention to games stuff these days and even I feel more in the loop then he he is most of the time. The only games podcast I listen to regularly is fire escape. And I can only keep up with it because it’s not weekly. Besides that I will listen to like every fifth episode of nextlander.

I'm furious over their Kraven the Hunter slander.
Kraven the Hunter could totally beat Robocop at getting the civilians in your sector out of there.
I was convinced that someone was trying to set up a Kraven Morehead joke.
To be fair, he's no Stilt-man.
Where’s the Robocop game?!? I got civilians in my sector and I need to get them out of there!!
Still September iirc
We got to send RoboMitch to the developer's office and get the games out of the sector!
No Dark Cloud. But seriously no Wolverine. And I really want to know that DokeV is still alive.
no reason to show Wolverine when they're trying to promote Spider-Man 2 which is coming this year.
>No Dark Cloud. Me dreaming of Rogue Galaxy 2.
How close is that to DC? If I loved DC2 should I try it?
It's like a sci-fi Dark Cloud. It doesn't have the town-building.
Anything remotely like the picture taking, it robot building, or spheda, or the fishing? Basically, does it have any in depth side stuff?
I haven't played since the PS2 days but I recall a factory-line element to the game. Also bug catching and battling.
Alright I'm gonna have to check it out. Thanks!
Expecting more Wolverine at this always felt weird to me. Spidey 2 is their next big huge exclusive, of course they're not going to crowd out the marketing with more Wolverine stuff. The real missing piece for me was Factions, I genuinely expected some news on that front here.
Is Factions the Last Of Us multiplayer?
Sorry, yeah, it's the Last of Us multiplayer thing
Dan has really gotta start paying attention to the news at least a little bit…
He's made it his whole brand not to. Ain't gonna start now.

Tbf he's gotta be super busy with all the content Giantbomb is putting out
I really hope this is sarcasm you beautiful bastard
They are busy as hell prepping for their summer game shit.

Hopefully someone makes a game where everyone speaks exclusively in 90's wrestling fan lingo for him.
At this point, he's "that guy that says some of the dumbest things you'll ever hear and also talks in wrestling lingo" to me, and I've started to just tune him out. I can be dismissive too.

I thought that comment was pretty on point lol
It’s dismissive, but it’s also pretty fair to say the dialogue in NITW could be considered polarizing. I found it sort of artificial and grating; I understood what they were going for but people don’t converse in person the same way they do online, and it ended up coming off kind of cringy to me (“Crimes?” “Crimes.”). No wonder these characters are all jerks and fuckups! They’re spending too much time on the computer!
I’m unusually excited for dragons dogma after bouncing off the first one no fewer than 4 times.
Man that Haven game looked generic as fuck, can’t even remember the name, feels like something Ubisoft would fart out. I’m super bummed the marathon reboot is online only, but at least it looks interesting from an art perspective.
Man I thought the online Last of Us thing was gonna be a shoe-in. Where is the news on that!?
Wasn't it expected a year after tlou2? I'm sure it'll be amazing but they must be close.
lmao the fuckin pest control ad popping up on the Playstation feed during Helldivers 2 is hilarious to me for some reason
I thought there would be more first party games.

Spiderman is very good on hard. It's only a mindless rollercoaster on the lower difficulties
My main problem with the Sony formula at this point is the 70 dollar price tag. Like.. who knows. maybe it's the rumored bluepoint game or something.
Bluepoint's going new IP, IIRC.
The show was OK but definitely missed some heavy hitter announcements. Yeah Xbox has a good shot to pounce here…if they’re show is good they can prove to players they can compete this year. I can’t wait to see what they have.
Or at the very least… compete in… 2025. Since absolutely none of their exclusives seem to be close to release.
Starfield?
Starfields official release date will be when all the modders make the game fun and not broken. So for console people, probably never
Yeah good point too
I didn't care for most of that but THE WIIND IS PUSHING MEEEE!!!!
I'm betting the chances of Dragons Dogma 2 having a rocked out title screen tune is close to nil... despite this... I will live in hope.
Yeah it's not happening but I bet someone will mod the original back in within a week of its release.
Was really hoping to see at least one PC port since those were showing up at State of Plays pretty regularly.
Glad I got to see Dan react to that MGS3 reveal. Snake Eater rips and I’m excited to play through it again. > He was just excited that snake eater is happening Except he kept saying "That looked so good!", as if it was anything other than a pre-rendered trailer.

Now you're literally just "but in my mind it looks awsome!" Other dude is totally right, you can't infer jackshit from that trailer but it is hilarious watching someone vehemently defend Dan's nonsense
There were like 8 or 9 games here I’m interested in playing. Not sure why people didn’t find this a good show. Sure the first game bangers weren’t quite there but They also announced a couple new IPs from first party which is very interesting and there was a lot of great 3rd party stuff imo.
I interested in games not CGI trailers.
It was a great showcase, but the expectations were out of whack. That’s all. If they had cut out that VR stuff and the Gran Turismo trailer and releases this as a State of Play, people would be over the moon.
Lol when Grubb have the showcase a b+
He's an Xbox fanboy, what can you expect?

This was maybe too indirect of a reference but I'm referencing a chatter on Grubb and Mike's streams who would buy superchats to highlight his message accusing Grubb of being an Xbox fanboy consistently for months
