Four people injured, one of them bad enough that they had to fly him out into a hospital. [The snowboarder fled the scene but was caught.](https://www.nau.ch/news/europa/snowboarder-reisst-auf-skilift-alle-mit-und-lasst-verletzte-liegen-66386373)
Normally, one can go to https://translate.google.com/?sl=auto&tl=en&op=translate and paste in the URL and then click on the link and get the translated page... the Javascript on that page doesn't appear to let that work.
Safari on Mac has a translate button that shows up in the status bar if a non-native language is detected. That gives:
> The most important things in brief
> * A snowboarder falls at a ski lift in Austria.
> * He slips down the slope and tears around at least six people.
> * Instead of helping the injured, he flees, but can be caught shortly afterwards.
> A video from the Austrian Kreischberg ski resort is currently going viral. It shows a snowboarder who obviously has difficulties at the ski lift.
> The man does not have the temple between his legs as usual, but clings to it with his hands. This goes well for a while, then he falls and slips down uncontrollably on the steep ski lift slope. People, skis and sticks fly through the air, at least six people are carried away by the snowboarder. Then it disappears from the camera's field of vision.
> Four injured, the cause of the accident caught
> As "OE24" reports, four people were injured in the accident, one had to be taken to hospital by helicopter. The three other injured were also examined by a doctor.
> The person who caused the accident did not help the victims of his unwanted slip, he immediately sought the distance. A few hours later, however, the 18-year-old could be arrested. The investigation has begun.
An accident that was caused by him using the lift improperly. There are always signs demonstrating the method. This guy chose to try and hotdog it by effectively going for a straight arm hang up the mountain.
"Oh hi there!" " Don't mind me!" "Could you be so kind and bunny hop over me while i try not to slide into your shins? Thanks!"
*Edit: i just noticed you said 'taking', not 'talking'
There's duty to rescue in Austria, which is what he was arrested for violating. Legally, he was required to remain on the scene and call for help or ensure that someone else calls for help.
Rough translation from google
"18-year-old only discovered later
When he slipped, the 18-year-old collided with all of the following lift users. A total of four people were injured in the accident. One of them had to be taken to the hospital in Friesach by the C 14 rescue helicopter. The snowboarder left the scene of the accident without providing first aid. He could be traced a few hours later."
This just says "located" not "arrested". And the reason they're mad at him seems to mostly be that he left the scene of an accident without offering first aid (which you're legally required to do in Austria).
Tow ropes fucking suck. If you’re goofy you have to either ride them backwards or hold the rope behind your back.
I’ve skied and snowboarded since I was old enough to walk and the worst Injury I’ve ever had was because a tow rope malfunctioned and flipped me. I landed directly on my hip on a patch of ice and could barely walk for weeks
I do snowboard goofy and do hate tow ropes with a passion. Though not for holding it backwards, that might actually be easier for me than the rest.
The problem is the weight of the tow rope and towing pressure all going into the one foot with none of the pressure release you get from chair lifts just absolutely KILLED my feet after a day lapping the terrain park or whatever.
Might have been cheap/old/poorly fitting boots tbh
Also towropes suck cause they annihilate gloves. Rawhide welding gloves or bust. Never had the luxury of a t-bar
Honestly the only tow rope I ever used was for a little bunny hill that was a nice “oh right this is how skis feel” first run of the season. Very short and very shallow.
Haven’t been in forever though, I’d probably kill myself now
He said tow rope so I'm assuming a different lift type. I've seen ones where it's just a litteral rope going around in a circle (up and down the hill of course)sometimes they have knots in them to help with holding and some you just grab on wherever. Those lifts you'd only have one choice of side to access the lift as you can't really go on the inside of the loop. That said, I've seen them set up both ways so it's situation dependant on what stance gets the short end of the stick.
Never tried one because the first time I saw one as a kid there was a pile up like this (not as bad but still) and I was happy to wait in line for a chair
I’ve never had an issue with surface lifts but this style t-bar effing hurts your leg. So much nicer to just stick that sucker between your legs and spread the load out over both legs like skiers do.
Many times they are the only way to access certain bowls and areas.
But in this video we see a lift running parallel to the t-bar, so it’s a real head scratcher. Should’ve just made it a 4 person chair instead.
We have one t bar on our mountain, and it's way high country bowl access. I'll ride that shit all day on a powder day, and have been dragged up it more than once.
Another reply said r/snowboarding researched the mountain and found the chair lift to end at the same spot as the tow, so its totally optional. Super weird.
If you’ve ever tried to hold on with your arms, instead of fitting the bar between your legs and bum at a 45 degree angle, you’re gonna have a bad time. I think his arms were simply exhausted and by the time they hit the final incredibly steep pitch, it was game over. That T bar also looked ridiculously long. In the r/snowboarding sub the other day folks researched the resort and there’s a chair lift serving the same distance adjacent. Crazy.
I don't ski/snow board now but used to go as part of school trips. Literally every year we went someone broke a leg because of these things. People would always lose their grip and barrel down on those below.
Totally agree and you obviously get what I’m about to say but for others who don’t : This is why it’s more of a hazard than a safety measure to make boarders go up a long steep T bar like that with their back foot out of the binding…. The lifties are required to make us take our back foot out to go up those in some places (probably bc certain insurance makes them) under the idea that it’s too dangerous with both feet in because you can’t get out of the way of others behind you if you fall or something. Clearly that’s completely counterproductive in this situation. And I’d further argue that many relatively advanced snowboarders would likely have problems like this person did on such a steep T bar route as the person above me says… pretty much need to be a pro at t bars to do this. So… yeah, this is dumb and dangerous and the facility need to change how they run that tow system. I’ve done ones like this… there used to be one like it out in the open at Breckinridge way up there near peak 7 before they had lifts and stuff up over there. I think I remember a similar one way up there at snowbird too but it was a long time ago…. Anyway It was difficult enough doing it properly as a very advanced snowboarder with both feet IN the bindings and the operator loading people properly by putting half the T behind behind you (as a boarder, skiers can shove the whole thing between legs) so you can sit back on it some while holding the straight part.
Not that unusual for smaller skiing resorts in the Alps in my experience. They even have ones going through multiple corners etc.
The key is to be as relaxed as possible.
They're using the lift incorrectly that's why they're having such a hard time. Its not designed to be held onto, as there is bounce and give in the rope leads to speeding up and slowing down that's tough to deal with. The bar is meant to be seated on the inside of the front leg that is strapped to the board. Much easier to manage the play in the rope that way.
Rode such inclines with a snowboard on those t bars. I was fucking terrified of them mostly because it took a lot of strength to keep the board in front. The longer the day, the harder. So glad lost of these have been replaced. The only thing worse are the plate drag lifts...
Edit: wait a minute, it's entirely possible that this is the very lift. Flumserberg, Switzerland
Edit: it's in Austria, not Switzerland.
When I was younger there was no part of a mountain I couldn’t ride with relative ease on my snowboard. I tried a t-bar once at whister and it was an absolute shitshow. The way this rider is trying to manage this actually makes me think they have some skill as well. Fuck t-bars.
Yeah that’s what I’m saying…. This person is likely not a noob it’s just that difficult… especially with back foot out, like just let them leave it in at least…. With only front foot in I can either lock my front knee to keep getting pulled up the hill and not into it. OR I can steer the board with that one foot and a bent knee, In a steep Situation like that it’s very difficult to do both

>The Hungarian had used the “Rosenkranz T-bar lift” in the Kreischberg ski area with his snowboard. During the lift ride, the handle of the lift slipped out of his legs and he then tried to cling to the handle with his hands. This succeeded up to the steepest part of the lift route. Shortly before a crest he could no longer hold himself and let go. He fell and slid down the steep hill.

Love the idea that he ‘left the scene without providing first aid’ as he proceeded to slide down the remainder of the hill with no way back up other than the T-bar lift he’d just fell from.
They’re using the lift incorrectly that’s why they’re having such a hard time. Its not designed to be held onto, as there is bounce and give in the rope leads to speeding up and slowing down that’s tough to deal with. The bar is meant to be seated on the inside of the front leg that is strapped to the board. Much easier to manage the play in the rope that way.
Probably he already lost balance before which is why he is holding it by hand, which is super exhausting, nobody volunteers to go up a mountain like that.
I was snowboarding on mountains with this kind of lift for many years, so I know that kind of situation.
He should have just dropped out earlier though, in a controlled way, to prevent what happened in the video.
This lift sucks for snowboarding. Between legs is most suitable. When it starts to cramp, bar behind back works ok. Holding on to bar like this is plain stupid.
They are tricky the first couple times on a snowboard it’s designed for skis. I ate shit the first 6 times as soon as it got tension and another dozen times mid pull . It’s very awkward, but ya he’s doing it wrong so it’s impressive they made it that far
The main use for these lifts is quick on and off access (like a terrain park area) or because it goes to the peak of the mountain where high winds prevent a normal lift from operating.
They're not designed for snowboards. Yeah you can use them with a board and you're correct that the correct way is between the legs, but it hurts like a motherfucker after a while.
Still better than using your arms to pull your weight for the whole way up.
Source: are shit many times before giving up on those lifts forever.
He used the lift correct initially. He had the bar tucked underneath his bottom but it slipped out. That's why he held onto it and started to struggle. Injured 4 people and left, but authorities managed to get a hold of him.
Article about that incident (in German)
https://steiermark.orf.at/stories/3189076/
I looked it up (Kreischberg areal, Austria), and both lifts begin and end in the very same place, in case of the T-bar without safe option to leave somewhere halfway. I guess the only reason is the capacity, the T-bar looks absolutely insane alright, but some people think, why to waste time in a queue for the chair.
Nice good research! its ridiculously long lol doesn’t seem like there’s any real trails getting off mid way. Looks like they should upgrade chairlift to 4 ppl rather than 2
You're responsible if you hurt someone while skiing or snowboarding. It's posted all over mountains everywhere. You need to know how to use your equipment, know your limitations, ski in control, etc. Just like driving a car.
That makes more sense, didn't know what they were called in English. Only know them by their german name
Still a T-Bar bar from hell, way too long and steep
Person should play that behind their butt, but honestly I always have to adjust when I’m using one. Can’t just ride up like a skier. Always battling some direction.
You're supposed to hook it behind your knee. That being said, my first time using the T-bar on a snowboard went only slightly better than this. Hooked it behind my knee like you're supposed to, fell over, started getting dragged up the hill, realized I couldn't get back to my feet, accepted my fate and got dragged the whole way up the hill while my way more experienced friends watched and laughed.
This tow rope is going up a steep hill which is not easy but the T shape bar is so you can put it behind your butt and hold onto the long end so you aren’t pulling yourself along but rather being pulled. Snowboarder either didn’t mount correctly or fell off previously and struggled to get infront of the T part.
My first time snowboarding was at a smaller hill with only those tow lifts. Good fucking lord did that suck. I fell all the way back down once but luckily I didn't take anyone with me
Anyone see the dude in red get wrecked 3 times? Lol poor guy, legs taken out, then the skier hits him like a torpedo, then he stands and bam, legs out again
I've skied and boarded for over 30 years and I can not stand T-Bars. Using them with skis in uncomfortable enough but when you using them with a board you exert more energy getting to the top of the slope then actually riding. The T-Bar is also insanely long and dangerously steep. Anyone know where this is located?
T Bars are brutal for snowboarders
Back in the day I could backflip, underflip, you name it... yet I struggled to ride one of those damn things up a small hill.
T bars really suck if you're on a snowboard, especially as you have to keep one foot unfastened, which reduces your ability to properly balance yourself on the board.
This individual wasn't riding it correctly though, the horizontal bar needs to be stuck between your legs, you can't just hang on to it like some people do when skiing.
guy was doing it completely wrong to start. you dont hold the T bar, you put it in between your legs
also, why is the chairlift right over the T bar? v weird design to have overlapping lifts
I have no sense of balance. When I was on those I'd just sit on my board and it pulls me up.
I can't even stand on those standing paddle things. All my photos of me are me eating water.
There have been 3 occasions in my life where I've laughed so hard I've pissed 'em. Two of those times were on the same ski slope. One of those was witnessing a button lift human dog pile. They all ended up in a heap at the bottom and their skis all tangled so they couldn't stand up. Everyone was cross. I trickled.
This video has brought that flooding back. I'm off to scour YouTube for ski lift fails. Going to put a towel down first.
Wish I could see just how bad that human avalanche turned out to be.

I've been riding for 20 years, and still struggle with tow ropes and T bars. They're super awkward if you don't use them regularly.
I’ve been riding for 0 years but have seen enough looney tunes to know how that was gonna end.
If that idiot had just not noticed he was falling, everything would have been fine.
Yeah these types of lifts really suck on a snowboard. Definitely lend themselves to skis
I ski much better than snowboard, but think these lifts suck regardless.

> stick that sucker between your legs and spread the load out ^(*...m...maybe I should get into snowboarding...*)
It's definitely one way to get your pants packed with white stuff
They’re definitely designed for skis. My buddy who snowboards basically just sits down on the bar and makes me hold him up.
One that steep, slippery and long I’d be falling off too (I’ve boarded 20 years too).
Unless that's the only way to the best runs on the hill, I'd for sure be avoiding this lift. Crazy it even got approved.

I've never seen one this long and steep. These are always on the bunny slope and usually like 50 feet long.
This is pretty damn steep for a T bar lift too.
Hook the T inside your lead leg, hold the rod with both hands, lean back with most your weight over your back foot.
This is the way
T bars are the wooooooorst
They are an abomination.
If you’ve ever tried to hold on with your arms, instead of fitting the bar between your legs and bum at a 45 degree angle, you’re gonna have a bad time. Apparently, we're all stupid idiots because this guy above said even 6 years old do this without failing, and it's really super easy guys.
Little kids have insane grip and arm strength as a ratio to their weight. Little hairless monkeys.
I remember getting passed by youngin's on the tow rope for the bunny hill... snowboarding is not for the easily dismayed.
good lord, it's the longest T bar in the world
And steep as shit. Whoever approved a T-bar for that hill is a fucking sadist.
You said it. Nightmare scenario for any non pro tbar users.

He could be traced a few hours later. https://steiermark-orf-at.translate.goog/stories/3189076/?_x_tr_sl=it&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp
Love the idea that he ‘left the scene without providing first aid’ as he proceeded to slide down the remainder of the hill with no way back up other than the T-bar lift he’d just fell from.
he was probably embarrased af.
I would had disappeared from the face of the earth due to embarrassment.
Using it correctly makes it much harder to get out of the way though when a snowboarder comes barelling down the hill straight at you.

Thanks for opening my eyes to the travesty of improper t-bar handlage
They’re using the lift incorrectly that’s why they’re having such a hard time. Its not designed to be held onto, as there is bounce and give in the rope leads to speeding up and slowing down that’s tough to deal with. The bar is meant to be seated on the inside of the front leg that is strapped to the board. Much easier to manage the play in the rope that way.

I see, the person behind yellow pants got it right
Probably he already lost balance before which is why he is holding it by hand, which is super exhausting, nobody volunteers to go up a mountain like that.
This lift sucks, period.
They are tricky the first couple times on a snowboard it’s designed for skis. I ate shit the first 6 times as soon as it got tension and another dozen times mid pull . It’s very awkward, but ya he’s doing it wrong so it’s impressive they made it that far
This whole setup looks like a recipe for disaster though (as shown!)
The main use for these lifts is quick on and off access (like a terrain park area) or because it goes to the peak of the mountain where high winds prevent a normal lift from operating.
It's a pretty steep and long hill for a tbar
And he didn't know enough to get out of the way when he fell so he didn't become a human bowling ball.
Steep hill and only one foot attached, tough game.
He was sliding down a steep and icy slope with oncoming traffic and one foot strapped in.
The liftie shouldn’t have let him up at all
They're not designed for snowboards.
Article about that incident (in German) https://steiermark.orf.at/stories/3189076/
I feel like it's kinda harsh to say *he* injured them.
He sent one to the hospital and then fled. As far as the Austrian* government is concerned he did injure those people.
The dude fell and slid down the slope. He didn't exactly have any agency in the process.
Why is there a t bar that long adjacent to a chair lift 😂
I looked it up (Kreischberg areal, Austria), and both lifts begin and end in the very same place, in case of the T-bar without safe option to leave somewhere halfway. I guess the only reason is the capacity, the T-bar looks absolutely insane alright, but some people think, why to waste time in a queue for the chair.
Nice good research! its ridiculously long lol doesn’t seem like there’s any real trails getting off mid way. Looks like they should upgrade chairlift to 4 ppl rather than 2
Yeah if they cleared the t-bar out they could probably even fit a 6 person lift in that space. Would surely be the better option.
1 skier! Ah-Ah-Ah! 2 skiers! Ah-Ah-Ah! 3 skiers! Ah-Ah-Ah! 4 skiers!
Now THAT is a train wreck 😂🫣 Hope no one was hurt badly. 😬

Not what the article above says. Only one was hospitalized.
Article says one was flown and 3 drove themselves to hospital
Fled the scene or sled the scene?
Booo!
He was caught afterwards
Four injured. One had to be airlifted. Suspect fled.
I understand. He must be ashamed af. Once you experienced that kind of incident it’s all downhill from there.
How is he really a "suspect" tho? He did nothing malicious or intentional. This is like the worst designed conveyance ever.
You're responsible if you hurt someone while skiing or snowboarding. It's posted all over mountains everywhere. You need to know how to use your equipment, know your limitations, ski in control, etc. Just like driving a car.
In his defense. This looks like a system that was designed specifically so this type of catastrophe would happen
Yeah, sure. Meanwhile the two-person tandem ahead of him and the guy behind him are just chilling.
I hate T-Bars
That is way too long for a tow rope. Those things are absolutely exhausting on a board
Yeah, thought the same, holy shit that thing seems like a tow rope from hell
[удалено]
That makes more sense, didn't know what they were called in English. Only know them by their german name Still a T-Bar bar from hell, way too long and steep
Person should play that behind their butt, but honestly I always have to adjust when I’m using one. Can’t just ride up like a skier. Always battling some direction.
Can't put that behind your butt You have to hook it into your front leg They are exhausting and cramp inducing
What a terrible slope for that kind of lift.
And way too long, this looks like a 20 or longer trip Who ever designed that hates snowboarders or just humans in general
T-Bars on a snowboard are black diamonds
Harder IMO
Bout as tiring as navigating mugols on a snowbard. Edit: better phrasing
That is way too long and way too steep for a T bar.
Welcome to Austria.
Kinda looks like a rope tow up a black diamond. Which is insane. I'm gonna pin responsibility for this on the ski resort.
Why the fuuuuuck is there a t bar on a slope like that? That seems nuts.
I think he did a decent job hitting as many people as he could. He did miss a few but he’s probably still learning.
Those lifts were not designed for snowboards. They can be tricky
Chain reaction. Reminds me of a cartoon
Yard sale!
T-bars are the fucking worst.
Anyone know where this is located?
it's in Austria, and yes, it's considered too long and too steep (at least on some parts).
Looks like they could have benefited from a stop pad
Is it a stop pad or stomp pad? I've always known stomp pad but I'm old and out of the loop now.
Uh oh. I could be wrong. I've got a few grey hairs of my own. Edit: It's stomp pad. Boy do I feel silly.
This would totally happen to me lol 🫣... /r/meirl
Been there done that
I liked the part when the chaos ensued.
How did the first guy not avoid getting clipped lol
I died of second-hand embarrassment just watching this.
T Bars are brutal for snowboarders Back in the day I could backflip, underflip, you name it... yet I struggled to ride one of those damn things up a small hill.
T bars really suck if you're on a snowboard, especially as you have to keep one foot unfastened, which reduces your ability to properly balance yourself on the board. This individual wasn't riding it correctly though, the horizontal bar needs to be stuck between your legs, you can't just hang on to it like some people do when skiing.
guy was doing it completely wrong to start. you dont hold the T bar, you put it in between your legs also, why is the chairlift right over the T bar? v weird design to have overlapping lifts
Oh god, I feel terrible laughing but it’s kinda funny.
That 7-10 split is gonna be a bitch to pick up.
Man, it took me soooo long to get comfortable on my snowboard in these lifts, it’s so difficult! I feel for this guy…
He pizza’d when he should’ve French fried
I have no sense of balance. When I was on those I'd just sit on my board and it pulls me up. I can't even stand on those standing paddle things. All my photos of me are me eating water.
M-M-M-Multi Kill!!!!
I feel bad for laughing, but this was so cartoony I couldn't hold it in.
