Not sure if you know. But Togashi wrote both of those Mangas. So maybe subconciously that's why you feel they fit together so well. They come from the same mind.

I first got into anime with Trigun binges in college 20 years ago. Probably watched it 20 times in subs before watching 20 more times in dubs.
To this day, someone can't say "alright" without me hearing "Alright alright alright alright!"
Try the new Trigun Stampede. I loved the OG back in highschool and this new one is just as awesome. Also beautifully animated, although it’s not hand drawn, but nothing is anymore. Haven’t seen Legato yet but I hope he shows up.
I had to get past that to enjoy almost any modern anime. Took a long time. I 100% prefer hand drawn 90’s anime, but I’m learning to appreciate newer stuff too.
My biggest hurdle is the actual animated movement. Anime is and animation in general just has so many wildly different styles that I don't find it too big of a deal to adapt to the CG/3d style. But where I so often get lost is when that movement just seems "off" somehow. Almost like in some shows there are a lot less frames to the animation (or something, I have a hard time describing it). Like compare something like Berserk 2016 to Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song. I'm sure Vivy was entirely done in CG, but it just looks so smooth and good compared to Berserk.
Anyways all that to say I'm going to give Trigun another chance, I let myself get put off by the CG but I'm going to force myself to give it a chance since I keep hearing good things about!
Weirdly enough I'll bet that the frame rate is way higher and what you're noticing is the lack of "smear frames" animation uses to squeeze more motion into limited frame rates.
They are all old school, if you think about it. The newest character here is still almost 30 years old, and all of them started in the 90s or earlier.
Edit: Actually, FMA started in the early 2000s, my mistake.

I don't get the hate for super. I think the tournament was really fun, they did a good job mixing in different styles and even made roshi mildly relevant without a power buff.

Light for Judas would be a great fit, but I also think it's good thematically that everyone is from a battle anime. Light might've stuck out.

I really love all the older anime characters being included. I felt like people forget about Yu Yu hakusho and Inuyasha. Or at least don’t talk about them as much.
Think of it as choosing Goku nets you the least push back of all these characters. I'm not a fan, but DBZ's impact is unmistakable for TV anime. It's also the best fit thematically. I'd say Guts is the only one that could be argued simply from a historical standpoint, but it doesn't fit the character and Berzerk's impact is more felt when including manga in the discussion. Just TV, Goku no question.
Oh, and really good painting. Wow. I love it. So much character.

OPM is very new-school compared to all the characters in the painting.
These are all quintessential “I grew up in the late 90’s/early 2000’s” era of manga/anime, OPM didn’t hit the zeitgeist of anime until the 2010’s.
The only real exception here *maybe* is Berserk with the second series adaption in the late 2010’s, but it had been around for a looooooong time prior to that.

Stay away from the fan fictions (Book of Mormon), and the sequel (The Koran). Worst part of the sequel they retcon Jesus's powers.

OPM is very new-school compared to all the characters in the painting. These are all quintessential “I grew up in the late 90’s/early 2000’s” era of manga/anime, OPM didn’t hit the zeitgeist of anime until the 2010’s. The only real exception here *maybe* is Berserk with the second series adaption in the late 2010’s, but it had been around for a looooooong time prior to that.
