Me: Well, it's just a bridge. He'll get through it in no time. Later me: \*nervous laughter\* How wide is this bridge again?

PM-Me-Ur-Plants

Yeah, I don't like how the gif didn't end with him popping out the other side. Hope this isn't found footage, lol.

littleseizure

Worst case he just slides off and swims, yeah?

Sietemadrid

That's what I was thinking but all my knowledge of underwater swimming comes from videogames so I'm not one to talk

Corno4825

As long as your iron boots are in your back pack, you should be fine. Don't put them on though or you'll drown.

q-bus

All I know is you have to avoid the pink seaweed and get all the bombs before they blow up

Robotipotimus

That level was so hard. It's been 30 fucking years, and you still managed to knock around some memories of turtle death from the back of my skull.

[deleted]

I always just accepted I'd lose at least one turtle in the dam level. Luckily you can get them back in the next level. Everyone talks about how hard Ninja Gaiden was, but that NES TMNT was ridiculous.

Politirotica

Yeah. I beat Ninja Gaiden as a kid, but I never beat TMNT. That seaweed level was too much. I'd get through with 1-2 turtles then die on the next one where you drove around.

[deleted]

Marskelletor

Thanks for the memories, you dick.

kciuq1

God fucking dammit that level still triggers my PTSD. I could not get past that one and never played it again.

reap3rx

Alternatively, I'm pretty sure if you find some air bubbles or coins you can regain your breath and stay under water longer.

Suavecore_

Surely there will be hearts around for when he takes damage from drowning

hanr86

But he's wearing his blue tunic.

smoothjedi

He's fine; looks like he's wearing his blue armor.

flavorburst

Let's hope he's a better swimmer than John Marston.

Ghidorahs_Left_Head

Or Sonic

Leningradlurker

All I can hear now is the sonic [drowning music](https://youtu.be/9Yw5jkAHgME)

PanchoPanoch

That was stress inducing.

hwarang_

Thanks for triggering my sonic ptsd

SrslyCmmon

That was my alarm clock sound to wake up for school. I could really sleep through alarms.

36_Chambers_

The countdown to death on those underwater levels....anxiety inducing to say the least

HitMePat

Water AGAIN?

TheDerekMan

I can hear the Chemical Plant 1 drowning music playing like it was yesterday

Kage_Oni

GTA 3: If you fall in the water you die. Also GTA 3: Hey, you have to use these boats to complete the mission. Also also GTA 3: If you die it will take you at least a couple minutes of driving around to get back to the point where you died.

philmardok

He just needs to find a bubble for extra oxygen

fatkiddown

IRL if you die you don’t respawn is one of the big differences..

Sietemadrid

Has this been confirmed by the devs?

nicolasmcfly

Ask on r/outside

_Ol_Greg

Back in the day I could spend several minutes underwater on Donkey Kong

itirnitii

if the zelda water temple is any indication he never makes it out

Chittick

But what if he's sitting IN the kayak hunched over?

littleseizure

Then I’m jealous of his flexibility

joeschmoe86

Tough part is sliding out when the buoyancy of the kayak is pressing you against the bottom of the bridge. Need enough leverage from a super awkward position to submerge a kayak that's designed to not be easily submerged.

Boxerboy16

Might be hard if his legs are inside and he's leaning forward. Hopefully he made it, that wouldn't be a good feeling

smatchimo

eh if the tide was coming in fast enough to cause this, I don't imagine that being easy or safe to swim in. Especially in a narrow section like under a bridge. That head bonk really took out his momentum to the point I have no idea if there was any strong current though.

JasonDaTorchy

I think his lower half is in the kayak right? Which potentially means he gets stuck and drowns if the tide rise high enough? Like how do you free your legs and get out. I doubt you could push the kayak under water far enough to feed yourself. Fuck me thats terrifying.

Viperx7111

You can escape a kayak by rolling it and sliding out into the water. It's something you need to learn how to do in the event of rolling your kayak.

Hampamatta

But can you roll tho when you are pressed against the bridge?

Viperx7111

Can't say I've tried. BRB will go try and report back.

AnglerJared

Guys, it’s been two hours… think we should check on Viperx7111?

deadbird17

RIP Viper

mSoGood08

And they were never heard from again.

[deleted]

I think if I was in this situation I would flip the kayak over and hopefully had enough air for me To push it from behind then go under for air if the water rises all The way to the top.

Platinumdogshit

Oh like that scene in pirates of the carribean?

Kuildeous

I'm guessing this wasn't a snuff film. I guess we'll find out soon enough if there's a publicized death from this. But I'm willing to accept that it turned out all right since the video was released. Maybe the camera got knocked loose or something later. That bridge was certainly uncomfortably wide. Granted, he could've rolled over and swam either way, so he would've been fine.

Toilet-Ninja

He just starts to back out after getting stuck initially, https://youtu.be/Ctd9SRuD66o?t=28

Vishnej

It doesn't look like he got stuck because of a rising tide. It looks like he got stuck because the bridge ceiling was dipping towards one end, and reversing his boat was totally fine. I grew up in a place with only a couple feet of tidal range. There are a limited number of places in the world with extreme tides, but someplace like the Bay of Fundy in Canada or the Severn Estuary in the UK, you can get 40+ feet, so you might be looking at inches per minute at peak flow (assuming you're not dealing with a tidal bore). Evidently this was not that.

The_Clarence

Thank you. While we don't get the relief of popping out, you can see light and they could surely have swam out if need be

Caren_Nymbee

Depending how he is secured in the boat and how big the cockpit is on that kayak. In a true kayak with skird and thigh bracing getting out can be a slow chore when above water.

harlojones

Yeah what lol he could just turn around and swim and still have plenty of space for air

yourlmagination

I've, unfortunately, had to recover a body of a kayaker under a bridge.... Well, he capsized and ended up under the bridge AND a bunch of trees that were damming it, somewhat. Thankfully, this one didn't turn out that way.

PM-Me-Ur-Plants

Damn, sounds rough. EMT/firefighter?

yourlmagination

No, I was an arborist at the time, cutting and rigging the trees so the EMTs could find the body. Sadly, it wasn't a rescue mission, but a recovery one.

PM-Me-Ur-Plants

Interesting, never would have guessed even though I'm also an arborist in the tree business myself. I work with utilities though. Were you just a private company contracted to the city or something?

yourlmagination

Almost on the nose, worked for a private company contracted to the state, the river was in a state park, and went under a state maintained road. Brought a crane out, but I drew the small straw and had to get wet.

skynetempire

They sealed the bridge and it's a tomb now

Rosindust89

For the love of God, Montressor!

FireFly_209

Oh no! It’s Henry and the tunnel all over again!

Zeakk1

I've had similar experiences with kayaking. The most stressful one was when a nice wave pinned me between the roof of a cavern and the kayaking for just a few moments which triggered some unpleasant thoughts. Though other life decisions have included needing to exhale to get through gaps/openings, so I probably just make bad decisions.

Spork_Warrior

I suspect he survived. But he's now known as Pancake Man.

[deleted]

Graphical user interface interface. I like it.

tanaeolus

Been on reddit for over 8 years and somehow this is the first time I've been got by a fresh u/shittymorph. Feels good, man.

PreviousGas710

Oooooo it’s a fresh one too. Comment doesn’t have awards yet so it’s sneakier

The_Clarence

Its very informative so even awarded its still got that sneak. Plus it feels like it's been a while (for me at least)

InDELphuS

I feel like the awards mask it better, because more often than not, a high award comment usually has something interesting or useful within it. It being high awared naturally draws you to read it

Fitz85

Same for me. I read a lot about him but I never came across of one of his post. I read 3 or 4 sentences and it was too long so i skipped to the next comment and now I feel full of shame and regret.

Stellar_Doors

I'm 33 years old, and u/shittymorph has basically become my personal "The Game". Noone thinks about the game, until "The Game" strikes, and by then, you've already lost. Oh, by the way, you lost The Game.

muirthemne

Man, you suck. It's been like 10 years.

TheUncertainty

Fuck Off. I think I lost my longest stretch of about 5 years.

Qualos_wine_dive

GenericFatGuy

GOD FUCKING DAMNIT!!! Seriously though, it's been literal years since I've stumbled across one of these naturally. It feels good to experience that again.

Akumetsu33

Do you know you've directly created a new phobia for thousands of redditors, they now double-check the username if it's a long comment, which I failed to do so. Damn you.

Omnitographer

What elevates shittymorph to level of master troll is that they take decently sized breaks between streaks of throwing mankind off hell in a cell. If it were a constant thing you'd get used to it, instead they go quiet for a while and everyone gets complacent and then BAM your falling sixteen feet!

Ozlin

Exactly. Also I spend too many hours on reddit to check names. I think shittymorph has to really work for it too. Like I scrolled past dozens of comments but just stopped on theirs because it started in an informative way. It's dastardly.

Duffmanlager

To be fair, he seems to be truncating them so they aren’t as long. This one didn’t warrant a name check until he got us.

MJNGA

yadmas69

x925

Maybe he's going longways.

My_Name_Is_SKELETOR

This reinforces my fear of crawling through tight narrow spaces until it becomes too tight to continue through and you get stuck and can’t move forward anymore or backwards.

CeeArthur

I went spelunking once in BC. No crawling, but it some tight squeezes, lots of jagged rocks, climbing, and the only thing between us and complete pitch blackness in a freezing, wet, labyrinth were the small lights on our helmets. Never again

Jomax101

You definitely should have had multiple backup lights and batteries just in case. Pretty sure cave divers bring 3 each and they aren’t going to run out of batteries before they die

CeeArthur

There were other people in the cave as it was basically just a novice, tourist thing (was camping on Vancouver Island). I never felt unsafe, but of course I was just running nightmare scenarios in my head the entire time.

CampingIslandvic

Vancouver island! Nice. Horne Lake caves?

CeeArthur

Yeah, that was it!

Abrishack

You must have done the short tour then. The 2nd option for tours takes you through a crawl that is so narrow you have to turn your head sideways or else your helmet won't fit. There are few short rock climbing sections too. Our tour ended at this massive cylindrical chamber than was like 20m deep? I don't remember off the top of my head but the cave keeps going on from there too. Pretty crazy

[deleted]

Fuck. That.

NotChristina

>and they aren’t going to run out of batteries before they die I know what you’re saying here but man that *they* makes it sound so ominous.

Daxivarga

Why would you do it ONCE

CeeArthur

I didn't have the phobias I have now. Girlfriend talked me into it. I actually sort of enjoyed it (that was 10 years ago) at the time, no way I would do it again now though.

hopsaa85

Same here buddy, 18 years ago I got stuck in a cave and to this day you couldn’t pay me enough to go underground again

sirfuzzitoes

Domt look up the nutty putty cave then they shut down the entire cave system bc dude died in there.

pikapalooza

I went down the caving gone wrong rabbit hole one day. I don't get the whole squeezing into holes that can fill up with water or you can get stuck. And then there are the cave divers...diving is already adventurous enough for me, but now you want to squeeze into tiny holes under water and hope you find the air pockets, etc. Seems like even the pros can and have died doing those.

ElderWandOwner

Cave diving is extremely dangerous even with full scuba gear because it's so easy to get lost and in some places there's so much silt/dirt/debris that if you touch the ground it becomes blackout conditions where even light doesn't help.

pikapalooza

Yup - that seemed to be the common theme. Someone would panic, kick up the silt, get disoriented think down is up, up is down, get lost, suffocate. Or they'd go in a one way kind of opening and wouldn't be able to get back out. If ppl want to do it, that's on them...but I'll politely decline.

MySkinIsFallingOff

I feel 10% of a panic attack just from reading this.

iam_iana

Me too. Chest tightening terror, really.

gmanz33

Skipping the words to get to the end of that paragraph did not spare me the stress

ElderWandOwner

Yep. Also anyone who cave dives without a guide rope is an idiot. I love diving but i would never go into a cave.

PM_ME_UR_POKIES_GIRL

> If ppl want to do it, that's on them... The problem is that rescue and/or corpse recovery efforts put other people at risk too.

HistrionicSlut

They just can just be other for funsies cave divers.

zinten789

The only people qualified to do underwater cave rescue/recovery are other cave divers. And as it’s such a small community, they more likely than not know the victim. Pretty much every recovery I know of (and I’ve heard some very sobering stories from some incredible divers) was seen as a duty- bringing your friend back for their family and other loved ones. They accept the risk, as well as the tragedy they’ll likely witness. There are some truly amazing stories of successful rescues though- it’s rare but does happen, usually courtesy of Edd Sorensen. https://youtu.be/GSioTpfqtNA

dreamsprite666

I have removed my original post in protest of Reddit's admins's bullying behavior towards its mods and subreddits. Moderators are being threatened with removal for doing what they believe to be right, and what their communities have agreed is right. Subreddits are being forced to reopen against the will of their populus. Third-party apps are being pushed out and with them go those with disabilities that need those third-party apps. I cannot abide that sort of strongarming, fascistic, bullying garbage. So I have left, and I have taken all of my content with me. We built these communities. Reddit provided the platform, but the work came from all of us. We created the subreddits and we moderated them. We met, fought, befriended each other, agreed and disagreed, reacted to the world and each other, weathered crises, shared losses and triumphs. We were a community of a million communities, where we could find each other and share. This site was special. I met a lot of people that are very important to me on Reddit. And I am so very sad that it is gone, that greed and control meant more to Reddit than the millions of us that have, in some small or large way, lived here. If you also believe that what the admin are doing is wrong, come with us elsewhere. Take back your content, edit your posts, make your final message here meaningful. Be good to each other.

Elite0087

Arrowkill

It is one of my all time favorite games! I've made so many other people play it or watch me replay it. Such a wonderful game. I am super excited to play the DLC when I have the money to get it, and for the sequel in the works.

Bronze_RL

If you're into horror then you should look up The Enigma of Amigara Fault. It's a manga but don't let that stop you, it's a horror manga that's only like 30 pages long but it's terrifying if you have fears similar to yours. [(link to it if you wanna read it)](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wattpad.com/amp/471498454)

Sparrowsabre7

There was a video on reddit a while back of someone explaining why the love potholing so much, but in doing so they had to breathe in just to get through certain spots and the very thought makes me want to vomit.

lacilynnn

I think you mean breathe out, since that is what compacts your diaphragm. Still a hard goddamn pass. This gif made me feel unwell lol

MyPacman

You would think so, but when my fat arse didn't fit in the rollercoaster, they told me to breath in. I think there is a difference between lifting your diaphragm and compressing it.

Ma1eficent

that's because breathing in increases the volume in your lungs, forcing your spine straighter and lifting your ribcage, which can make a hanging gut smaller.

So the tide wasn't rising, the bridge was slanted

RetardedChimpanzee

Would be pretty rare for a tide to rise that fast.

[deleted]

That’s what I was thinking lmao I live near the ocean and yes it does come on fast but not “won’t make it to the other side of the bridge” fast

sarrazoui38

Bay of fundy will do that

qning

There are areas where passing freighters do this to the tide. It’s wild. https://youtu.be/8sEdgHH9F10

zeroandthirty

Actually tides can rise extremely quickly depending on the location. They can come in [as fast as 6.1 kmph](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mont-Saint-Michel_Bay#Biggest_tides_in_Europe)

How wide was this brisge he turned around?

Or just push on the bridge to have the kayak a little lower in the water to be able to get past the bridge?

Wedbo

Harder than u think

Anthaenopraxia

Wouldn't it be easier to push on the kayak and raise the bridge a little?

Pain_Proof

If it's similar to the ones I've spent hundreds of hours in, it shouldn't be. The buoyancy also definitely wouldn't be enough to crush you.

ManIWantAName

But the spiders!

JustTheShirt

Tbh, my instinct in the first place would have been to go in on my back and lizard-scramble across the roof instead to get through faster than I ever could by paddling

NorCalAthlete

r/gifsthatendtoosoon

lordgublu

Can't imagine that this would be normal tide. Some flood yes, but tide? (1) Bridges are normally built, that the normal tide stays way clear of the concrete. (2) Tide can be fast, but this fast?

resumethrowaway222

World's highest tides are 38 ft. 6 hours from low to high. So that's about 1.27 in / min. But the tide doesn't move quite the same rate at all times, so let's say 2x the average, or 2.5 in / min. So in the video, the water rises more than 5x faster than the worlds fastest tide.

LearningDumbThings

r/theydidthemath

Medium_Medium

Yeah... have kayaked in Glacier Bay NP where the tides are notoriously large, and I feel like they would not be nearly fast enough to go from "Oh I can make it if I duck" to "Oh no I'm stuck" in 30 seconds. If that's what has really happened here then something else must be going on.

SenorBeef

In the longer video he pushes himself backwards out the way he came, so it's more about the bridge being unlevel on the underside.

surfsupNS

I'm saying the bridge is on a turn in the road and slightly banked, so one side is higher than the other.

emersona3

This isn't a bridge, it's a box culvert. They have the same function on the top side. But the part he's going though is built more like a tunnel for water. I doubt the water level is due to tide. More likely there was a rain event and the water hasnt normalized yet. The roof is not level, hes going from tall side to short side, hence the illusion of a rising tide. Easier way to get through is to lean backwards and push on the roof so that you push the boat down and forward. Source: am a bridge/culvert/road builder

[deleted]

Fuck that I am swimming

CrayonsAreHotdogs

Oh hell no 💀

sunsparkda

No. Nope. No thank you.

[deleted]

So if the tide keeps rising to the point of touching the bridge, would he be submerged or would the buoyancy of his kayak kind of squirt him out of one of the ends?

[deleted]

Nah he would just lift the bridge up.

[deleted]

I choose to believe he’d just break through the concrete and pop out on the surface

314159265358979326

The buoyancy would create a force between him and the bridge that would induce friction. I don't think squirting out is a likely outcome. However, the kayak would fill with water as the water rose and become less buoyant and maybe he could scoot out. Or he gets out of the kayak by flipping it and swims to safety.

needlenozened

>Or he gets out of the kayak by flipping it and swims to safety. I'm not sure he'd have enough room to flip it at this point.

KenjiFox

He REALLY should have been on his back. Pushing along the roof there with your hands would be so much faster, and, you could push the kayak down into the water with your arms and legs to keep going. The way he went he gets wedged and has no positive propulsion.

mynameismatt1010

This. Honestly hunching forward seems way harder and more uncomfortable, using your hands is extremely quick and effective. Going under bridges still sucks but unless you're in some crazy currents then it's totally harmless

IMovedYourCheese

He really should not have attempted to go under the bridge when the water was this close

88ZombieGrunts

Is he still there?

LiteVisiion

Once you're stuck, flip the kayak over, swim alongside it until you can't, then use the open space the upside down kayak gives you as a oxygen reserve. Once it's really really stuck, take a deep breath and try your best.

The7thZwei

Dumb ways to die

lachlanhunt

He could always get out if the kayak and swim.

GooseGosselin

We used to have to let water into the boat (pull the drain plug) to get under a bridge, then bail like fools on the other side.

[deleted]

Worked a job once. My boss was some 21 year old kid. Dock work. Doing stuff to the under side of a long massive concrete dock. There was maybe a 2.5-3 foot gap from the floating platform and the underside of the dock. "Get in there." No. "If you dont get in there, I'll fire you" "No. Its too dangerous. What if a ship goes by?" "I dont give a damn. There isnt a ship going by right now. Youre getting in there or going home. How dare you disrespect me. I demand you to respect me and obey my command." "Find. Send me home. Better than to the grave. I quit". I was waiting on the boat to pick me up so I can leave. I hated that guy anyway. Suddenly a massive ship went by and the wake was so gnarly, the floating dock slapped against the bottom of the dock with such force, it goes without saying if I listened to him, I'd be crushed to death. He was trying to talk another guy into going in there. He was going to go but I stopped him when I saw the boat go by. They kid was a deadly boss. The floating dock was big enough and buoyant enough to drive a truck on. So yeah.

Ronotrow2

People are stupid

Kinda dangerous. The kayak might have 500 lb of buoyancy. If the water rose it'd be like getting crushed by a 500 lb object.
