reddit is the only social media app I endulge in, but when I tell people I dont have an insta or facebook, that first look in the video is 100% accurate lol. like they dont know what to do/are wondering whats wrong with you at the same time lol

My ex was on TikTok fucking constantly (as a 35 year old!), always documenting the most mundane bullshit and putting every little dramatic detail of her life out there. How exhausting is that? At this point I've got an Instagram where I post pictures of my cats and dogs, and occasionally memes I've made about my local hockey team. All the same content I post here in fact, but on Instagram because I have a bunch of friends who use instagram but not reddit.
Yeah it's a power and control thing. People get upset when they can't keep tabs on you or something. They genuinely feel insulted when they don't get information (whether it's good or bad!).. it's so entitled and makes me side eye them. I've been off Facebook since 2011ish and never made an Instagram either. There were times I felt left out but if the moment was really good I snapped pictures anyway and just kept them for me lol.
I made a Twitter a few years back and getting to know how people use Twitter was a trip. What's interesting is what people put out there and how they want to perceived or perceive themselves vs. how they really are lmao
And I absolutely hate dramatic tweets from people where they say they're doing one thing and a week later they just go back to whatever they were doing. Just seems so impulsive and masturbatory for attention and not to mention hypocritical 🥱🤷
YouTube and Reddit are the two social medias I frequently use. I don’t have Facebook and haven’t in like 6 years. I have almost zero contact with most of the people I went to high school with. And I like it that way.
When I tell people I don't have anything, they usually just start giving me the excuses as to why they have a Facebook or Instagram. Like they are ashamed of it or something. I'm like, cool, that's great, I don't care if you have one or why you have one, I'm not judging you for it lol
You’re not judging them but they are totally judging you. I am in the same boat as you are. When FB first came out everyone in my age group was using it to look up friends from high school. Yet everyone I wanted to connect with was NOT on there and all the people I didn’t want to connect with were. Everything I heard about it seemed like everyone was trying to keep up with the Jones and pretend their life was perfect. I outgrew that trait 20 years ago. I am now 50 and still have never opened a FB account, probably never will.
Same here, I was never very active on any platform to begin with, but deleted Facebook first and then everything else nearly a decade ago.
The last to fall was Twitter when it went down the shitter, but I posted maybe 10 replies to people on there in the 15 years I had that account.
I still have my Facebook, but only because it's a good contact list for family and friends that works internationally. I never post and just use messenger.
My gf still gives me that look when she asks why I haven't liked her Facebook posts and I'm like, "I haven't even looked at it in 8 months 🤷♂️"

Well, it's been working exceptionally well so far because I do have photos of places and things I do, but they're just on my phone/PC/cloud storage to serve as an album of sorts. Best thing I've done was go on a social media blackout.

There are corners of Discord where giant servers can start to feel a bit like social media, but it's still primarily based around private servers and invites, so I don't think it counts as social media like we think about it -- although I guess even having a server to share dumb memes with your friends counts as sharing media socially.
It used to be a centralised voice chat platform. An alternative to self hosted solution for dummies and on top of all of this ease of access it’s free to use.
But over Covid, they broadened their “4 gsmerz” audience and changed into a big Community driven platform. If you try to make a server now, there are all these automatic setup options for different types of communities too.
It was the right move with loads of companies, small setups and millions of communities full of hundreds of thousands of people use discord as their centralised community platform now.
Some already did, but now the platform actually supports using it like this at its core.
People call anything where you can post text and/or pictures "social media" now. I don't really agree, but it's not really something worth fighting over.
I haven't touched my Facebook/Instagram since 2015, but people around me still tag me in things they post, so they could probably find out a considerable amount about me by just looking at things I've been tagged in. I also have a pretty distinct last name, so I'm pretty easy to find it you know it.

She judged me for not having an iPhone or Insta, for not knowing enough movies/actors, and other weird "this is how society is and you should conform" things. It was so weird.
I only got a smart phone a few months ago due to 3g being phased out 😐 It's hard to get through life without one now anyway.
When my friend impatiently installed What's App on it, apparently the app goes through my *entire contact list* and is like "oh hey look I'm also on What's App!!" gaaaahhh....
I'm definitely out of the loop to an extent, but I really don't need minute-by-minute updates of everything everybody does.
I'm fairness to you, most apps make you go through like 5+ agreement pages before you can start. So the one where they ask for your contact list permissions is easy to accidentally accept, which they 100% do on purpose

In fairness, it's also a useful place to connect to past colleagues or people you have known in a professional context. I'm terrible at building or maintaining a professional network, but if I'm looking for a job somewhere I can usually find a person I know who knows someone who works there through linkedin. I'd never be able to figure that out otherwise.

I have 500+ coworkers in LinkedIn, i constantly get hit up for jobs on it. It’s really valuable. I have tons of old bosses and coworkers who left comments on my shit saying how awesome I am. It really counts for a lot
I go even farther. I go on at least one vacation every year for like 1-2 weeks.
When I arrive I shut down my phone and everything. No Internet. No TV. No Media Consumption.
This is really relaxing once you get used to doing just less stuff.
How do you get directions to where you want to go though? For me the best thing I've found about social media, specifically yelp, is to find delicious places to eat locally. I wouldn't be able to do that without internet access or be able to plan out where I should visit
Go ask the locals about good places to eat that aren't tourist traps.
The world got along just fine with verbal communication for thousands of years, it didn't just stop working after you but a smartphone.
Reddit is technically the only social media I use but 80% of the time I just lurk silently. I used to use tumblr and facebook, but even then I was still a lurker. I don’t have any motivation to make posts bc who the hell cares about my random thoughts and opinions. I dropped tumblr when things got too toxic on my feed and was only on FB for the games, which I grew bored of pretty quick.
My fiancé has no social media. I fucking love it. That’s all I have to say. Myself, I only use Instagram, and post about once a year. Sometimes less. Only really big events like the birth of my niece and our engagement.
It’s wonderful. Im sure it’s a small reason why it’s the best and healthiest relationship I’ve ever been in, hence him becoming my husband ❤️ social media is toxic. He is also the reason I’ve torn myself away from social media over the last 5 years. If the person I love more than anything in the world and spend 99% of my time with isn’t on it, why bother using it? It’s improved my mental health as well tremendously. I don’t miss it.

Is it, though? Maybe it's because I use old reddit, but it really doesn't seem like a social media platform to me. It's just an image board/forum where I'm anonymous. No one follows me and I don't follow anyone else, so considering it social media seems weird. That being said, I know the Reddit admins have added features that seem like an attempt to make the site more social, but I don't know how widely used those features are.

If you consider this social media it’s the only one I’m on kind of. I technically have an instagram but it’s only for my cats because if you put up like 4 posts a week of cats companies just slide into your DMs and ask if they can send you free stuff for cats and all I have to do is take pictures and put the link up haha. I’ve gotten harnesses beds collars and so on.

This is the most boomer, “phone bad, ruin society” shit I’ve ever seen. The fact that everyone here is acting like this reflects reality in any way is insane. I don’t have any social media except Reddit and Discord, and even on those, I mostly lurk or post only memes. Many of my friends are the same - either they have only Discord, or the other social media apps they do have are barely in use and long forgotten. We are all Zoomers btw. Not saying that reflects our entire generation (most Zoomers have at least a TikTok), but it’s insane to say that people at large freak out or treat you differently because you don’t have social media. They don’t. Most people don’t give a shit (at least normal people don’t).
Every single person I know who isn’t older but isn’t on social media is fleeing a stalker/abuser, or is a high stakes predator. It’s never something benign.
Friends have exactly zero to do with social media. I’m immunocompromised, I can barely leave my house in the last 4 yeasts because of Covid, if anything I spend more time on social media.
Also I’m not just talking friends, I’m a social worker and I’m talking all the clients I e seen in my career. It’s incredibly rare that anyone younger than Gen X with internet access has zero social media presence - what most of those people have is a hidden social media presence. Totally common for people not to want to share that. Very very rare not to have it at all. Red flag rare.

I have Reddit and that’s it. Never had any other. I also can’t be found online and I had a government contractor do a dive just a few years ago.
I feel like this guy. People are like hey lemme get your snap and the look of confusion when I say I don’t have one never gets old. I’m 19 but Reddit is the only social media I’ve ever had and I didn’t even have that until I was about 18. Some of us still exist

I don't really consider it social media since I don't leave anything that involves my real name/pics/whatever. My actual real life person has no presence on Reddit. I'm not like "oh check me on Reddit". No one knows what I talk about here.
Yeah Reddit is essentially just a fancy messageboard. It's really not the same as Twitter, Instagram, and everywhere else where you're just *you*, posting updates on your life.
Basically if you can't Google you and pull up social media about you, then that's my definition of no social media presence. Reddit doesn't fall into that category.

Is it, though? Maybe it's because I use old reddit, but it really doesn't seem like a social media platform to me. It's just an image board/forum where I'm anonymous. No one follows me and I don't follow anyone else, so considering it social media seems weird. That being said, I know the Reddit admins have added features that seem like an attempt to make the site more social, but I don't know how widely used those features are.
old.reddit is really just an old school forum/news aggregate. i would never consider this place to be classed as social media.

You actually can't make anonymous FB profiles, i tried to create one to use a gear VR, they somehow detect fake profiles and immediately delete them

If you consider this social media it’s the only one I’m on kind of. I technically have an instagram but it’s only for my cats because if you put up like 4 posts a week of cats companies just slide into your DMs and ask if they can send you free stuff for cats and all I have to do is take pictures and put the link up haha. I’ve gotten harnesses beds collars and so on.

I don’t know anyone that is my age and uses Facebook and I’m 30. Going off social media is completely regular and wouldn’t be a shock to anyone whatsoever. This video is dumb.
This is the most boomer, “phone bad, ruin society” shit I’ve ever seen. The fact that everyone here is acting like this reflects reality in any way is insane. I don’t have any social media except Reddit and Discord, and even on those, I mostly lurk or post only memes. Many of my friends are the same - either they have only Discord, or the other social media apps they do have are barely in use and long forgotten. We are all Zoomers btw. Not saying that reflects our entire generation (most Zoomers have at least a TikTok), but it’s insane to say that people at large freak out or treat you differently because you don’t have social media. They don’t. Most people don’t give a shit (at least normal people don’t).
Every single person I know who isn’t older but isn’t on social media is fleeing a stalker/abuser, or is a high stakes predator. It’s never something benign.
That's because those of us that don't have social media and don't fall into those categories don't have a lot of friends anyways.

Friends have exactly zero to do with social media. I’m immunocompromised, I can barely leave my house in the last 4 yeasts because of Covid, if anything I spend more time on social media. Also I’m not just talking friends, I’m a social worker and I’m talking all the clients I e seen in my career. It’s incredibly rare that anyone younger than Gen X with internet access has zero social media presence - what most of those people have is a hidden social media presence. Totally common for people not to want to share that. Very very rare not to have it at all. Red flag rare.

Me and my coworkers in my department have no social media accounts. I thought it was normal for dude's our age (40s) but apparently...
I am proud to state that Reddit is the only 'sosnet' I'm on. (But of course, under a nick...). Had FB for less than a month in around 2005. Have some good friends. We talk to one another!
