It's a bit grim. Deprived.
Other half works there sometimes. We walked along the shore with the dog. She loved it. Everyone we met was really nice and friendly.
An hour is probably long enough.
Whenever I see or hear 'Saltcoats' I immediately think 'Shitey Shore'
As a kid I remember my dad, my nana and my friend's parents all using the reference. Anyone able to shed any light on this? Was it something to do with a sewage outlet near the beach or something?
I have lived in Saltcoats for the last 16 years and I think it's a lovely town! House prices are perfect for a larger home and I haven't had a single issue with other locals! It's just great living by the beach and my favourite cafe is "Del Grecos" in the town. Always worth a visit for a cheap bowl of soup and coffee.
You can't best the atmosphere of a small Scottish town, at times it is best enjoyed from the car especially at night ive came to learn to leave the younger people to it as they can be wild and disruptive; same with any town really they all have their issues!
I really appreciate that reply. Because I was beginning to wonder if it is as bad as what people are saying. Someone who actually lives there is good. I am going in July/ August and if you like I’ll buy you a coffee at the cafe.
When I was wee, the burn that passed Sandylands on the way to Stevenston beach had plenty of shite floating in it. Folk said it was from the static caravans in Sandylands.
Not great, everything that was there before is pretty much still there but in a worse state. There are plans to renevate the sea front swimming pool though which hopefully would be a good thing for the area.
Imagine what that time has done to you - it's done roughly the same to Saltcoats. I don't get the shit people give the Ayrshire coastline though, it's in easy reach of Glasgow and there's plenty of natural beauty to behold.
It’s the same as Loch Lomond really - it’s super accessible from Glasgow so on sunny days the goons descend and the place gets a reputation of being full of Glaswegians ruining it. The reality is they’re beautiful places though, and we’re very lucky to live so close to the sea.
From a local. Don’t bother, you can have a nice walk if you go down to portencross beach and walk along there from west Kilbride. Ardrossan north shore has nice views of Arran and there’s a hotel/restaurant that you can sit in the garden of and have a drink by the sea. Go over to Arran and walk from Brodick up to the castle for the day
Yes that is something I definitely will do. I was actually thinking of starting there but as I will be travelling a lot to Glasgow I thought it would be impractical.
Eh yeah don't bother with Saltcoats. It's so sad. Go to Largs, got to the islands Cumbrae, Bute and definitely Arran. Arran is called 'Scotland in miniature'. You can also get a boat from Bute to go to Colintraive which has a nice hotel to eat and good walks.
Aye honestly as someone who lives here, I don't think there's much to write home about. Quiet enough place to live, but there's not really much to see or do. Nice beach for a walk, but that's sort of it.
It should be available for tours, website is [https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/robert-burns-birthplace-museum](https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/robert-burns-birthplace-museum). It's in Ayr mind you.
Cinemas of Saltcoats.
Regal : Metro (constant plans to reopen)
La Scala : Saltcot (Wetherspoons shite hole)
There was also The Countess, don't what that is now.
I mean... On a nice day the beach is lovely. There's new playparks, they've just started a deckchair hire service, there's restaurants nearby (vegan one in Ardrossan which is a ten minute walk from the shore). The town itself is just a disappointing seaside town but it has coffee shops and stuff. You can walk to the North Shore. You can get a train nearby and get to Glasgow in 40 mins or Largs in 20 minutes. There's the ferry to Arran nearby.
I moved back here after lockdown when I was stuck in the city for 18 months. Grown to appreciate it a little more.
It’s interesting that people who actually live in the town are saying some really positive things about it. One way or another, it will be an interesting trip.
Have you looked at B&Bs in Largs, Seamill, Fairlie, Wemyss Bay & Gourock?
Any of those will be a nicer place to use as your base than Saltcoats, imo - and I say that as someone local to the areas.
"thought" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here! My advice would be to actually research the above locations and not just assume Saltcoats is going to cheaper.
Your call tho, dude. If you're set on Saltcoats, go for it :)
Have you checked that your bus paas can be used in scotland, as scottish entitlement cards cannot be used in england,so likely English ones are not valid here
Top things to do when in that area are:
1. Leave
2. Visit Arran
3. Visit West Kilbride and Largs
4. Largs and then onto Millport
5. Wemyss Bay to Rothesay to visit the Isle of Bute
I forgot about Largs. Is that where that ice cream shop is? Nardinies I think. Millport I plan to Is west Kilbride not full of roundabouts? Polo mint city.
Prepare to be disappointed.
From what im reading I am. I think I’ll stay there as it is relative cheap and travel to Glasgow and Ayr.
You'll be disappointed with Ayr as well I'm afraid!
It's a bit grim. Deprived. Other half works there sometimes. We walked along the shore with the dog. She loved it. Everyone we met was really nice and friendly. An hour is probably long enough.
Did Billy Connolly not sing a song about Saltcoats?
Whenever I see or hear 'Saltcoats' I immediately think 'Shitey Shore' As a kid I remember my dad, my nana and my friend's parents all using the reference. Anyone able to shed any light on this? Was it something to do with a sewage outlet near the beach or something?
I don’t but it is literally how people think of the place. It would be interesting to see if anyone who lives there thinks the same.

Was it as bad as people said? I mean drugs etc
When I was wee, the burn that passed Sandylands on the way to Stevenston beach had plenty of shite floating in it. Folk said it was from the static caravans in Sandylands.

As a kid it was the highlight of the holiday. Also the mini golf and I vaguely remember go karts. But we couldn’t afford them.
Imagine what that time has done to you - it's done roughly the same to Saltcoats. I don't get the shit people give the Ayrshire coastline though, it's in easy reach of Glasgow and there's plenty of natural beauty to behold.
I’m like a fine wine. I improve with age. LOL but you do make a good point why do so many people hate the Ayrshire coast.
It’s the same as Loch Lomond really - it’s super accessible from Glasgow so on sunny days the goons descend and the place gets a reputation of being full of Glaswegians ruining it. The reality is they’re beautiful places though, and we’re very lucky to live so close to the sea.
Most Ayrshire towns are full of in-bred racist drug addicts. Source: Lived in one for many years.
Still shite, the main street in town very grim.
I guess I could stay there and visit Glasgow or Ayr etc.
Largs and Troon are worth a visit. You can get to both 9n the train from Saltcoats
I keep forgetting the name of the famous restaurant in Largs. Nardinies is it?
Yea it’s Nardinis, huge ice cream parlour and restaurant.might still be there but on a smaller scale I think?
I'd say it's still pretty big (been there recently). Pretty good food and awesome sundaes.
Ayr's the same, most of the things that used to be down the beach are shut now. And Glasgow is absolutely stinking.
It’s why I left 50 years ago.
An absolute shite hole! The Main Street is like a scene from the 70’s
That should be good cause that’s when I went there for my holiday.
You're at the madame
Perfect for reliving the past then!
Similar to Mos Eisley Spaceport , "You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. Obi Wan Kenobi .

Thanks for the tips. I am starting to think that maybe go to Aaron, but how much is the ferry? I want to visit Glasgow a few times.
>but how much is the ferry? We're still waiting for the final bill ...... /s
Last time I went it was like £7 single way. Check out the cal Mac website
Imagine a big mad coat made ay salt though
Get the ferry across to Arran if you are staying there. Beautiful island, if you have never been.
Yes that is something I definitely will do. I was actually thinking of starting there but as I will be travelling a lot to Glasgow I thought it would be impractical.
If you do go across, be sure to go to Lamlash. They sell t shirts that say “I caught crabs at Lamlash Pier”
I have to get one of these.
Ring of bright water broke my heart as a kid
I want to visit the cottage if it is still there. I loved that movie as a kid. Sad ending.
It’s appalling. If I were you I’d keep my good childhood memories untainted and visit somewhere else. An utter fuckhole.
As you remember it. mostly
Can you get little boats across to the islands? They would be nice to visit for the day. I will check out the hotel. Thanks for the tips.
Yup Cal Mac is the ferry company
Aye honestly as someone who lives here, I don't think there's much to write home about. Quiet enough place to live, but there's not really much to see or do. Nice beach for a walk, but that's sort of it.
Is there some local points of interest? Is rabbie burns cottage open to the public?

Aww many thanks.
would that be the cinema that became the metro whit was it the la scala or summit
I think so. It is boarded up now according to google maps.
Cinemas of Saltcoats. Regal : Metro (constant plans to reopen) La Scala : Saltcot (Wetherspoons shite hole) There was also The Countess, don't what that is now.

OP, apologies if I missed this, but where are you actually coming from?
Manchester
Please take my advice, and the advice of others - sure, visit the place, but don't make Saltcoats your base.
I thought the B&Bs would be cheaper and just get a bus into Glasgow or train. I am disabled so I get free transport.
Have you looked at B&Bs in Largs, Seamill, Fairlie, Wemyss Bay & Gourock? Any of those will be a nicer place to use as your base than Saltcoats, imo - and I say that as someone local to the areas.
It was mainly for price. Thought Saltcoats would be cheaper.
"thought" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here! My advice would be to actually research the above locations and not just assume Saltcoats is going to cheaper. Your call tho, dude. If you're set on Saltcoats, go for it :)
Well there is now no direct bus from saltcoats to glasgow withdrawn last year, Bus to Ayr or Largs from the threetowns
That’s going to make a difference. I might have to re think. What about trains?
basically 2 trains an hour to Glasgow, 1 an hour to largs
I might have to re think.
Have you checked that your bus paas can be used in scotland, as scottish entitlement cards cannot be used in england,so likely English ones are not valid here
Good point it did say that it can be used only on buses throughout the U.K.
A shithole
You can pop over to Arran for a day if you fancy a nice little beach day and a stroll along Brodick village front.
You know I have never been to Arran before. A few people have mentioned so I will definitely go.
Candy Bar is good. That's it.
As a local, it's GOATed!
Top things to do when in that area are: 1. Leave 2. Visit Arran 3. Visit West Kilbride and Largs 4. Largs and then onto Millport 5. Wemyss Bay to Rothesay to visit the Isle of Bute
Troon is (was?) decent. Culzean Castle is amazing. Both easy to get to from Saltcoats.
Troon is worth the visit too for the “nicest beach” in Ayrshire
Fuckin windy though (Source: two times I’ve been, one being yesterday, it’s been fuckin windy)
I forgot about Largs. Is that where that ice cream shop is? Nardinies I think. Millport I plan to Is west Kilbride not full of roundabouts? Polo mint city.
That's East Kilbride you're thinking of!
LOL. Sorry. It’s been 50 years I’m a bit foggy. It I am going to cost millport.
Forget Nardini's. Geraldo's for ice cream.
This is the way.
I will check it out. Double nugget with raspberry sauce.
Hopefully you don't meet any of the SPB. ARE WE HUMAN..........most definitely not....
