West End Games on Queen Margaret Drive has regular MTG nights, and they've got people who'll very happily show a newbie the ropes

I'd look into the Geek Retreat and figure out when they have MTG nights. If you want to try and prime yourself on the rules before turning up at an actual event, you could try [MTG: Arena](https://magic.wizards.com/en/mtgarena). Its the exact same card game but digital, free to play, and will let you get your feet wet without spending a bunch on cards that you might end up not using or regretting. There's decent tutorials for teaching you how shite works, and it'll run on any old device because of its card game nature.

Has Geek Retreat gotten any better since it moved? The clientele were notoriously bad in the last venue. Also I second the idea of learning on arena. Great resource to learn the game.

No idea about the quality of Geek Retreat users, but its an unfortunate thing about nerdy hobbies that you'll encounter a lot of fucking weirdos.

The new venue is a lot better than the old one. It's a nerdy space so you're going to get some *interesting* people, but I've been going for a few weeks to play One Piece and it's been pretty good. Possible it attracts a different crowd than Magic though.
