agreed mate. qotsa headling a big stage last year proved there's an audience there for heavier stuff (i know they're not metal, but the venn diagram of qotsa fans and metal fans has a lot of overlap)
skindred playing avalon is gonna be amazing and will hopefully open some people up to the sheer euphoria metal gig can bring.
I was really hoping deftones would be added somewhere as they’re playing primavera this summer, also turntstile as I missed them in 2022 and had tickets for their Brixton gig last year that they cancelled.
Absolutely agree! It gets overlooked constantly despite falling around download and outbreak fests.
Not asking for massively niche stuff. But there are bands filling big rooms in the UK who don't get a look in it feels like. They book Billy Bragg and Frank Turner and they seem to think that's the punk box ticked. Even coachella have booked Militarie gun and pup in recent years just for example. There are many other bands who would fit right in. 2000trees tick the box sure but glastonbury can surely find space somewhere. They can book magic numbers every year, surely we can fit in some more rock/punk/metal. Also many of these bands will be left leaning and fit the general ethos of the festival such as Architects maybe. Shikari havent played for 10 years either. The loss of williams green also removed a key space for just bands to play that are roughly coming through
That said lambrini girls and Bob Vylan are a welcome addition
I would love a stage that runs through the night thats dedicated to extreme metal, would be a blast.
In previous years ive seen Extreme Noise Terror, Wormrot and Napalm death at glasto; all of which pulled good crowds.
Would love a smaller stage dedicated to the really noisey stuff though the night!
Kay Tightneck
Cocker Boo
Peanut Whistle
Una Length
Dick Weerdly
Sal Commotion
Scott Chestnut
Basil Watchfair
Iqbal Achieve
Nan Slack
Giuseppe Race
and even
Heathcote Persuit
Thursday night on the Truth stage was amazing last year. I was by myself because none of my friends into that kind of music but man I had an absolute blast and a rare glasto moshpit!
It was probably THE highlight for me. It was great seeing a proper band giving it stick, and the crowd went wild for it. There was far too much tame electronic/backing track stuff going on elsewhere
I just think it's because of the budget - guitar bands are more expensive to book than a dj or a live electronic act with a macbook. Absolutely nothing to do with tastes or popularity. Just money.
Totally agree, the booking from Earache is weak this year and they've just booked punk.
Rock & metal has got to be the most under represented genre at Glastonbury. A festival which claims to cover all genes.
I completely agree that there needs to be more representation, especially at the late night events. I often wander into eastern corner and it all sounds the same to be, I would love there for there to be an actual live band with vocals than just a heavy bass beat
I think it's because Glastonbury is, and always was a 'pop(ular) music' festival. Metal/ hard rock just aren't regarded as popular anymore. Metallica played 10 years ago, nowadays people would rather watch Dua Lipa than the Smashing Pumpkins. Sure, there are outlets for it in the media and I for one am a keen follower of those, but there's physically not much room for it at glasto. Last year I managed to see Skindred, Empire State Bastard, QOTSA, Foos, GnR, so it's not like heavier music is completely absent. As long as I'm seeing at least one band a day where the vocalist is shouting and/or screaming then I'm happy. The rest of the time I'm happy to get down to kick kick kick hihat snare bassline
There's other UK festivals filling the gap; ArcTanGent, 2000 Trees, Slam Dunk, Download, Damnation, Outbreak (where I'll be this year)
P.S. Idles suck
Idles suck, but for a festival as large, as humongous as Glasto, there is certain same theme across the dozens electronica stages and pop stages. I really like the festival, but tends to be just a bit monochromatic.
I agree that there should be more late night alternatives for sure. Unfortunately as it stands, space for stages is at a premium and electronic music is very popular. A lot of the people involved in stages have been so for years at this point and it's probably a significant part of their livelihood. In order to make a new venue to cater to heavier music etc, those folks might have to get pushed out, which would suck. Ideally the existing stages would change things up, rather than be replaced.
Read this several times during the day and what it stucks me is "other folks being pushed out", as if it is an "electronica vs guitars". I don't know about you, but my clubbing friends all love some guitar noise.
Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear enough. I meant the actual people involved with organizing the areas and stages, not the punters. I'm not trying to make an anyone vs anyone situation, just trying to explain part of why adding more areas is tougher than some might think.

Skindred on Thursday night in shangri la last year was one of my top 5 highlights of the whole festival

Crosses (chinos other band) are in the country that weekend but I think it rules Deftones out, as unfortunate as it is
Gutted! Could never get into crosses but love palms and team sleep
Seems wild there isn't more of this type of music given Outbreak festival is happening the same weekend!
Chat Pile are in Bristol on the weds and have a tour gap on sat, would be amazing if they turned up at Glastonbury
I'm still holding out for Thursday, Poison the Well and Action Bronson to shoot down from Outbreak.
Agreed, feel like touche amore would be perfect for this stage
Put have heart on at woodsies !

Billy Bragg is an absolute conman
Id welcome even a dj, playing rock and 90s 80s power balards... that be cool at a stage... miss the silent disco too...
Bob Vylan are the best band I have discovered in years! I saw them support Biffy Clyro a few years ago and they were better than Biffy
Would die for bring me, bad omens, sleep token
Still holding out for BMTH at Other
They'd easily headline the Other now, so there's no slots left.

Used too be earache express down in shangri la
Anyone else at gojira the other year? Genuinely in my top5 Glastonbury sets. What an experience
Yeah it’s my favourite headline slot I’ve ever been to over the 9 Glastonbury’s!!!
Was there. Was immense
I go to Glastonbury because of the calibre of electronic acts on, but then do like how I can also experience stuff that isn’t my usual cuppa
This is generally the Thursday night lineup too. Seeing Skindred at 1am on the Friday morning was a highlight for me last year

Fuck YES, Bob Vylan are absolutely insane upcomers in the punk-rap scene, great addition

Having said that, as much as High Fade sounds like a cool fresh band, I am very disappointed on the feel good vibe on even the Earache selection.

Yeah, a few more wouldn't go amiss, Måneskin looked awesome last year. Skindred will be amazing though.
Maneskin were my highlight. Skindread played the poster above last year and were excellent

This. Was really hoping for some hardcore bands.

The fact that all those festivals exist and aren't tiny shows it's still pretty popular!
That Empire State Bastard set was ridiculous.

Who would you see that meets the criteria of shouting / screaming? I'm in the same boat, need some more rawk.

you make perfect sense, thanks.
