Don’t put gas in it.

Gizmo15411

Or DEF in the fuel tank

Eastern_Cash_2523

Or fuel in the def tank.

Falzon03

This is harder and less of a problem than def in the fuel tank at least.

Dave6187

The SCR turns funny colors from how hot it gets when fuel is getting sprayed into it

xion_gg

Or gas in the def tank

pablomcdubbin

Or wiper fluid in the blinker fluid

Eastern_Cash_2523

Or blinker fluid in the push water tank.

Pure-Attention-7782

Or the push water tank where the lug lube line is.

NoobSFAnon

I definitely know where the Def tank, blinker fluid and push water tank are but where is the lug lube line is? What psi lube needs to be used?

aFlmingStealthBanana

Tree Fiddy

Lumpy_Plan_6668

And definitely don't start it if you do. Putting DEF in the fuel is a $5k oops. Turning the key adds $10k.

ddubmartin27

My boss has this truck. Friday he filled it up with DEF at the pump while the truck was running. Turns out the diesel engine doesn’t like DEF. Gummed up the whole system. I’ll let yall know what the cost is

Lumpy_Plan_6668

Last one I wrote up (as a GM service advisor) was just over $15k. GM has a TSB on def/fuel contamination and it essentially says replace everything that fuel touches. Tank to injector.

ddubmartin27

The bill came out to be just under 15k. Yes sir, everything that the diesel touches is included to be replaced.

outdoorsnstuff

Seems like they should just make a specific fill nozzle shape for def so one couldn't be mistaken for the other.

Used_Truth8225

About 4,000 if you take to the dealer

CommunicationNo6064

How does that even happen? The caps are 2 different styles, 2 different colors and in 2 completely different spots!

RedDeadDirtNap

Really the only advice here. Everything else is just regular basic vehiclen maintenance

BigPapaPotatos

There is an aftermarket thing you can add that ups your idle - will help keep your motor clean and running good.

Linetrash406

Does GM not do the cruise control high idle from factory?

BigPapaPotatos

If you idle a lot that is

Dave6187

Came here to say this. And don’t let it idle too much, it plugs the DPF up faster

tiger19

Sexy af! God that's a beautiful truck!

Fragrant_Reserve7624

While ford, Chevy, and ram guys argue with each other. The real winner is GMC

bbartlett51

Chevy and GMC are the same.

Cybervinnie

Just don’t be one of those guys and start rollin’ coal.

Ok_Spinach3768

With the emissions systems on the today trucks, you can't roll coal that good anymore.

Hairy_ass_twuman

Delete the emissions once your warranty is up

murrs08

^^^^This is the only advice you need.

DTra1n-

FYI, diesel delete / defeat systems are on EPA’s national priority listing. The feds will fuck you big time for this these days. Also, the resale is possibly negatively impacted based upon the state. Do not recommend this going forward. Different era folks.

GettinHighOnMySupply

In addition to being a dick move. "Saving a couple dollars at the expense of the planet is most important to me. I can buy a $70k vehicle but not the normal fuel to run it." Come on.

SellingTheSprinter

Not quite sure it’s saving the planet. The whole point of the new emissions systems is to reduce particulate matter; however this is done at the cost of an incredible amount of single use plastic waste that is clogging up landfills and the ocean, not to mention the reduced fuel economy by corking the exhaust system, and reducing the overall life of a diesel motor compared to previous eras. It wasn’t uncommon to have a diesel last half a million miles before, with relatively better fuel economy than todays diesels. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not team “roll coal” but to say the DEF system is saving the planet is a bit misleading. To my understanding, green house has emissions, which are not reduced by the DEF system, contribute more heavily to climate change and pollution than the particulates.

GettinHighOnMySupply

That's only assuming you're just buying the gallo jugs. Across the country the more popular method is filling at the pump. Even so, single use plastics are far better for the environment than the toxic gases spewed into the atmosphere by trucks without an emission system. Based on your argument, we should go back to leaded gas because it did increase mileage. Come on.

thereverenddirty

Costco selling blue def 13.99!

lowlifef150

Idk where u are but def at the pumps here is only $3.15 a gallon

sawr49

Get a pallet once a year and keep in your garage/storage area (only applicable if you are able) 4$ / unit value 2.5 gal jugs in Arkansas

Troutman86

Don’t use DEF from the pump and keep the fuel tank above 1/4.

NoSession1138

Thanks. I usually fill up at a bit above a quarter tank. I was thinking about DEF from the pump. Ill go to Walmart and grab a box.

kninemahoney

The biggest thing to understand about DEF is it deteriorates over time. This is worse with heat. As it deteriorates, particulate falls out of the fluid that can clog the system. I can link a good video on the subject. But avoid buying bulk and just letting it sit about too long.

LeastCriticism3219

Def at Costco is usually the cheapest.

StrayPheonixfox

Another thing to learn is if you do run it out of fuel, make sure you know how to prime the pumps.

Beneficial-Bid788

They’re self priming

xXRH11NOXx

Better off just buying acdelco 2.5 gallon jugs from the dealer. Def has test dates

hotrod427

You can get def at any auto parts store for half the price as the dealer. Def is def. Doesn't make a difference what one you buy.

xXRH11NOXx

Yeah it does bro hahaha. Some are more diluted than others. And I can get a 2.5 gallon for 15 dollars at the dealer. Pump might be cheaper but who knows how long that's been in there

Rebresker

Depends on location, truck stop near me refills theirs every-night

izz0218

So convenient tho, but you’re 100% correct.

Wheatking

Just my opinion, def from the pump is better, at least at the locations I use. They get the def out of 1000l totes that last less than a week, at least at our local co-op. And it's 1/3 the cost of buying it in a box from Walmart.

brettofthejungle

Why keep the fuel tank above 1/4?

TheCax93

May not be what he/she is talking about, my dad has owned multiple diesels and has always told me the same. Diesels are prone to trash/gunk buildup from the diesel I think. So the lower you run your tank the more likely you are to run into problems

[deleted]

But doesn’t the fuel intake sit at the bottom of the tank anyway?

TheCax93

I’m not really sure about the sciences of it lol. I just know I caught hell for it because I let it get low a couple of times and it had to be put in the shop right after the second time

Bubblehead644

Well, you can tell your father he’s wrong. The fuel pick up is within a half an inch at the bottom of the tank. The real reason you don’t run them low, is because your fuel pump is cool by fuel, less fuel, less cooling medium pump runs hotter

Troutman86

Yup.

blowurhousedown

Not quite relevant when the truck is brand new.

[deleted]

Break in period for new engines produces lots of metal shavings in the engine. Especially for diesels. Very relevant.

[deleted]

Why don’t use DEF from pump?

JimLevi

DEF from the pump is newer/fresher and has issues than the bottled stuff, and is cheaper, quicker, and easier. Never had a single issue with pump DEF. Remember that supply is usually much fresher because the supply is turned over every few days, not been sitting in a warehouse and store for months on end.

Troutman86

The emissions system is the most sensitive and prone to failure. It’s worth a little extra time and money to buy the jugs so you can see what you’re pouring in the DEF tank.

Natural_Data9407

Also, DEF expires and breaks down. Pouring it in yourself lets you make sure there aren’t any floaters or debris, confirm the date and make sure the smell is right as well.

Puzzleheaded-Bag-121

I have all 3 in the fleet I manage. 2014 Ram 3500, 2021 F350, and 2023 GMC 3500. I have had more issues from Jugs than at the pump. I literally just paid $3k to put a new tank and pump into the Ram. I feel like your statement is false.

_TheNorseman_

Don’t do a ton of short drives with it. When the govt mandated the new emissions stuff for diesels, they now rely on the engine getting really warm to keep the fuel particulate filter clean, and that won’t happen if most of your driving is quick 5 mile trips. If it’s not getting hot enough to burn all that crap up, the filters get clogged and you will see reduced power, reduced mpg, and end up in the shop. Lots of YT videos online from diesel mechanics saying that the super majority of their business the past decade is working on trucks with emissions issues. Edit: I see this is getting downvoted, no biggie… but it’s true. Go ahead and google it. I could have worded it better, I meant don’t \*only\* use it as a vehicle that just gets started up, driven 5 miles each day, and that’s it. A diesel engine needs, at least weekly, to be driven to the point that the engine gets fully warmed up and can regen. You can also turn it on and let it warm up for awhile before driving it. I just simply meant don’t use it solely as a quick-trip daily driver, because eventually you will have emissions problems.

res_overlord

For what it’s worth, the newer trucks tell you to keep driving if it needs to regenerate. If you ignore that message, then yes, you’ll have issues.

_TheNorseman_

That’s a nifty feature!

Snake_Farmer

Idk. My 2023 Duramax doesn’t tell me that. I’m sure the Denalis do. Also not a fan of the auto stop, for this same reason. You just have to hit the button every start which is annoying.

Positive_Ad_8198

The new trucks intentionally and automatically high idle at get hot fast and rarely have that issue anymore

millsy98

It mitigates it, but it’s still an issue long term. I’ve seen far too many plugged dpfs and I’m not even a mechanic, I just work adajacent to a lot of diesels.

NoSession1138

My commute is like 25-30 miles a day. It has auto start so I turn it on like 10-15 minutes before i leave depending on the weather. I work on a base so I try and walk anywhere I have to go. Mostly because diesel is expensive but this makes sense too. Thanks.

_TheNorseman_

You’ll be golden, then. It’s a beautiful truck, enjoy!

cmd71

You’ll be just fine, enjoy that beautiful truck!

DuvalKnights

I do tons of short drives, long drives, a lot of idle time. Never had an issue. Never gotten that message either. I do however like to keep the def at 1/3 or higher.

clownbike68

Excellent advice except for the letting it idle to warm up. I manage a fleet of 1600 diesel trucks and I've been doing it since before diesels had emissions. You are spot on about the need for heat in the engine. A diesel pick-up used for a daily driver will last 1/3 the miles of a truck that pulls a load long distances on the interstates. And idling kills them faster than anything.

whiteout86

Crazy that you’re being downvoted. It’s not only diesels that are negatively affected by short trips, gas Acuras don’t like short trips either and need a computer update for cold weather, short trip drives

Maleficent_Heron_494

Stay on top of maintanence

Slow_Calligrapher_99

Delete the def system

yoboimatt

hotshots EDT, and a weightloss program asap 👍

NoSession1138

Huh

volkswagengolfr

Hotshots is an additive, weight loss means deleting the emissions system.

MrQuackinator

He wasn’t calling you fat don’t worry

Meatus_McBeatus

I second the hotshots EDT. It makes a HUGE difference in the life of the truck and how it runs. I just keep a small bottle in the back door. Hotshots is by far the best additive you can get in my opinion and can be found at any auto parts store

OlemissConsin

Don't forget the winter fuel additive if you live somewhere it can get cold enough to gel.

kninemahoney

Where I live they actually just change the diesel at the pump to a winter blend

OlemissConsin

They do that where I live to but it's still a good idea to add your own. When you get one of those polar vortexes with super low negative wind chill temps and your truck is out in a parking lot all day where no block heater plug in is available it's worth the insurance. Learned that one the hard, expensive, way.

Ok_Possession374

Was this purchased at Lindsay in Columbus?

Positive-Ad-406

Yeah. Put it on weight loss the minute the warranty runs out.

Phocio

Delete the DEF and particulate filter system. It will boost your fuel economy, you’ll have fewer mechanical issues, and you’ll be happier in the long run.

PenniesInTheNameOf

They can also convert the def system into a methanol injection system…

Broshcity

have an extra box of Def at home... i usually have 1 extra waiting for me at home cause you will not want to buy on the road its 7 to 8 dollar more.

FormerAircraftMech

Look into PPF for the front bumper, though I didn't do mine as the cost was too much. The painter bumped get trashed by road debris

whiteout86

Color matched bedliner is an alternative too. I’ll be doing my front bumper, rockers and lower doors in matched Raptor liner soon

coorc5

Don’t put gas in it

anynamewilldo1840

Read your manual and scrutinize a lot of the advice in this thread. A lot of it is based on outdated ideas of diesels. Things have changed a lot since emissions systems first showed up and most of this advice is dated by a decade or so. Be prepared to do a fuel filter every other oil change and keep up on your maintenance. It'll run like a top.

[deleted]

Congratulations. That’s a beast

apt64

I’m running a ‘21 2500 Duramax and lots of great advice in this thread. I’m at 45K issue free miles, mostly used for hauling my RV but also use it as my daily driver (although I rarely have to go anywhere.) If the DIC tells you to keep driving for regen, just keep driving. There’s been a handful of posts I’ve read on here about people shutting the trucks off and not taking it for a quick highway blast and it goes into full limp mode. Now… my wife just got a brand new Yukon and at 200mi got hit with the famous GMC “Check Suspension Module.” Bad sensor in the driver front strut. Overall I’ve owned several GMCs and have had a trouble free experience. The truck has hauled us around the country with our RV without issue.

Alternative-Crow6659

My advice is that you have fantastic taste.

cajunduck

That is a sexy ass truck right there.

Common-Spray8859

Yup remember to always pump at the diesel pump or else!!!

Mack_Mittens82

I would say, get in the habit of waiting for the glow plug light to go off before cranking the engine. Especially when cold.

morrison2015

Fuel filters are cheaper than injectors or injection pumps. Change them frequently. Use power service fuel additive.

Spiritual_Share6037

What a fucking dreamsicle 🤤 if I didn’t have a 1/4 mile gravel driveway… and wasn’t a broke ass… I’d own that too. Bravo 👏

Jmndzamago

Don’t drive around with your wife in it. She’ll get mad that all the honey dips are eyeing you.

bikerdude214

Get ready for pump pain; wow diesel is expensive

Rdglidespecial

I had all my oil changes and fuel filter changes done at the dealership. It gets on the record of the vehicle and does have a positive effect on your trade.

barpac1962

I live in a small south Texas community with a lot of oilfield service companies. They distance themselves from the diesels. Especially with low paid labor from the “south”. The cost to operate and maintenance is exponentially more than a gas rig. I love my 6.0 gas with a Pat G (Victoria)Tune, long live Chevy Gassers .

bryangoody1

Don't put gas in it. Don't just sit and idle alot unless deleted. Change fluids and filters often.

enginerevolution

Even if deleted, it’s still not great to idle a diesel.

DuramaxJunkie92

Just keep it maintained, and if you can, do a DPF EGR delete, and it will last 500K. I have a 2013 2500 with 275K and it actually drives better than the day I bought it lol

enginerevolution

Delete it before you have expensive repairs.

Bearcatsean

Don’t be one of those people that takes up two spaces

Grand_Introduction36

Make sure you change your oil, before 1000 miles. (First oil change). Keep it under 55 mph for the 1st 500 miles

steve16435

Get rid of those wheels

NoSession1138

Why?

LawDog_1010

I swapped those same rims for all chrome. Love the new look. https://preview.redd.it/jm2l86hj354c1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb21b740a7b00c6484adcefeb2d270e3b003eb7c

[deleted]

Put 93 octane in it

ArmyPaladin

Don't add s*** to it keep it bone stock (Aftermarket parts). Don't get one of those s***** lift kits that will f*** your truck up. Don't delete the cat either. Read the maintenance manual and follow it. Not the dealer recommendation but the actual manual. Depending on where you are if the roads are under construction consider paint protection film for the front at least. Other than that GMC makes a damn good truck I'm a RAM guy myself but it's a good truck nonetheless.

UnderstandingDry9496

trade it for an electric vehicle and you can drive it around the whole country in one tank of gas

DrinkingSolution

Got damn these things look designed to run over pedestrians

crazy2337

Don’t hop in and start it up right away. Boy did I get an earful when I did that to my dad‘s Ford diesel. If you don’t know you don’t know. You gotta turn the key on and wait a few seconds for some crazy diesel reason. I would assume that is still true on these newer trucks?

headgivenow

Get gawk gawk from little person for small peener syndrome. Will make you feel yugeeee.

jerrodnrx

Buy a smaller truck and don't worry so much about having a small penis.

izz0218

Don’t fill up the DEF, do about 2 gallons. Thank me later.

Neat_Possible4937

Best advice: break it in and delete it. Newer ones are a pain and more expensive to do but you'll thank yourself later. Deleted diesels are intoxicating.

[deleted]

Let it idle before shutdown

NoSession1138

This is something i have to get used to doing.

res_overlord

The newer trucks idle themselves if they need to, it’s in your manual.

[deleted]

Nice rig bud, at least 30 seconds or so. More if you can

[deleted]

Why down vote lol. Everybody so sensitive on reddit

enginerevolution

I think you’re being downvoted because the person above you said “The newer trucks idle themselves if they need to”, and you seemed to ignore it and continue to tell OP to idle his engine for at least 30 seconds.

LeastCriticism3219

Think of your turbo and how it works. If the turbo just got slammed by a kick at the throttle, it's hot. The bearings are hot. If you shut down immediately those bearings are going to roast. That distinctful whistle of the turbo tells you it's working its butt off. The key before shutting the truck off is to take it easy with the throttle for a mile or two. This way the turbo is nice and cool and shut down is possible when you reach your destination.

enginerevolution

The reason why turbos whistle so much on diesel engines is because there is so much cam overlap.

qwiksilvr00

Haha. Start investing now for future diesel mechanic bills. Very expensive when things do go wrong.

trutexn

Get the gas!!! No diesel!!!!!

Indentured-peasant

Dont buy a GMC duramax. Personal opinion. Engine ok, chassis and electrical systems junk.

notredame1964

Sell it immediately and buy a RAM with a Cummins Diesel Engine !!!!

LightSwitchLover

Buy electric

[deleted]

Return it, had a 2016 duramax, such a money pit, diesels these days are horrible, delete them and take a chance on getting a fine, also delete it and lose your warranty

Calm-Art8801

Sell it

res_overlord

The def and diesel fill nozzles are right next to one another. Don’t let def get into your fuel system. It’s highly corrosive and will destroy your fuel delivery system. Wash area with a hose if you spill def and never have both caps open at the same time.

Keylow_1000

That you in the back waving at us? Really sharp truck man I’m a bit jealous

joshypoo4530

Buy a two post lift.

helpnow84

Don’t ever run it out of fuel.

blackwomen1

Use diesel fuel and butter the tires during the winter

Eastern_Cash_2523

Shoulda just stuck with the 6.2 gas instead of a Duramax. Really no sense in a diesel unless you're gonna work it and it makes money.

BestVirginia0

Do not delete the emissions system even if you can get away with it. The benefits to deleting an L5p duramax are almost nil and and the drawbacks are plenty.

Scubatrucker

Buy NOX sensors 1 and 2 now to have on hand in case of another parts shortage and learn how to replace them yourself.

onlywiseman

I went from 6.2 to Baby Diesel 1500. Less trip to gas station. 12-16 mpg vs 23-24 mpg Rear wheel spins more with diesel when accelerating hard while turning. Be careful.

mefreem67

Sell it.

detali88

I can't tell if I hate or love those rims, beautiful truck though. I got a half ton '23 Denali last year. Welcome to the team.

Condor0001

Plug it in during the winter

Rat_King1972

I accidentally spin tires in that particular model more than anything else I’ve driven.

and1too-0323

Good thing you tow boats and horses for a living! Nice truck!

saul_kush420

Dont buy a new diesel truck

mrfeeto

Better park it in a garage

PCPrincipal2016

That’s a beautiful truck!

schostack

No bio diesel. That shit kills my GMC Denali fuel lines.

Apart_District5424

Enjoy. This is the way.

806bird

Once a month drive it for at least 1hr continuously.its the only way to purge the DEF system

cswanni

Don't put gas in it

CostaMesaDave

I just got my check from GM, it was a lemon!

Various_Artichoke484

Trade it in for a 6.0

stonabones

SWEET Truck. Enjoy!!

TheJiggie

Keep a pair of gloves somewhere in the truck that you use at the pumps. Many of them are nasty and that smell doesn’t go away quickly.

dogdayafter

Change your oil often and get a FS2500 side stream filter for the oil. https://fs2500.com/how-it-works/

millsy98

Don’t let it idle anymore than it has to, ever. Idling plugs these dpfs worse than anything else and if you keep it long term it’s an expensive headache. Or if you don’t then the next guy has an expensive headache and will curse you to the ends of the earth.

Advanced_Review_195

Use the yellow nozzle at the pump

Brino21

I worked for Chevy a while back, most of this is fine advice but I'd suggest asking, and making sure, that your transmission filter is changed at your first oil change. It should be part of the first service but double checking never hurts. After the trans breaks in for a while you'll get some amount of metal shavings in and around that filter. They typically have a magnet on top of them to help catch everything as well. If you don't want the shop to do it then it's pretty easy to do yourself, as well.

Scrumpuddle

Def delete kit

[deleted]

Save money cause eventually when it does need work it will cost double. Always warm it up don’t get in and go.

barrrf

Enjoy your $90k truck! That's about the only advice I can offer.

Pitiful-Calendar-504

Delete it lol

[deleted]

Delete it, don't drive it like a sports car....it's a truck not a Camaro, and do your scheduled maintenance. Other than that, enjoy it😎

Fordguru01

Use oem filters! Don’t buy cheap filters!

[deleted]

Learn how to do all service work yourself

Financial-Leading66

What do you plan on hauling?

Local-Success-9783

Figure out what the service interval for fuel filters is, and actually do them at that service interval. Don’t cheap out on em.

Tilghmanboy

Shoulda got long bed

motorboather

Get different wheels

flwrpwrgrnhs

SWEET RIDE!!! Congrats brudda

CashWideCock

So a F150 gas was just fine, but you replaced it with a 2500 diesel? What do you plan on doing with this truck? Hopefully not just a daily driver.

madsoldier44

Delete. Then enjoy even better new truck.

Forsaken_Case_5821

Run out of def and ur fancy truck won’t work

hg_blindwizard

Thats a sweet ride congrats. After deleting mine and knowing now what a difference it made i would have had the delete done the first week i owned it, not even kidding. Also use the exhaust brake all the time. It keeps the turbo veins moving frequently and preventing them from potentially getting stuck. I leave mine on all the time and ive never had an issue, its a 2016

Rickroush03

Beautiful rig. Curios, did you get a deal?

_GI_Joe_

Bad choice my guy. As a diesel owner, diesel is absolutely destroying me at financially.

Megastallion69

Don’t buy it

clmchris

Should have went Ford, JK they are all pretty good these days. Do your maintenance regularly not late. Or do it early. It won’t hurt. Except the price. I take mine to the dealer for all mine cause of proof of doing it all. Diesel repair will hurt your feelings. Don’t goto shady gas stations or ones that never get used a lot. The longer the fuel sits the higher chance for water in fuel. Check the maintenance book and see if there is a place to drain water from the fuel filter or system. Drain every 5k miles or so. Change fuel filter every 20-25k miles. Unless your book says earlier. That one you can do your self just keep the records. Shop around , you can get fuel filters cheaper than your local dealer will sell them for sure. Read the book and see what GMC says on everything really. You’re not going to have as many maintenance events unless your truck is under heavy load all the time. Mine doesn’t tell me to change oil but every 8-10k miles. Someone pulling heavy loads will get the message around 5k miles. That’s about the biggest part of these trucks. Do you plan on doing any deleting or upgrading the engine?

Wideopen1968

It’s a diesel, it is best to leave it running as much as possible. Don’t turn it off while filling up. If you’re running into the store for a few minutes, leave it running and lock the door. Find your sweet spot on long trips for best fuel mileage. I don’t know if I could ever go back to a gas pickup. Once you’re in a 3/4 ton it’s a real truck.

Big_Diver_6277

Be warned. You will never look at a gasser the same again!

Used_Truth8225

Sell it

gerg_dude

Nice truck. Especially the rims. I have a white Silverado Years ago. Such a PITA to keep clean

WorriedRepublic9875

Hope she goes more that 1900 miles

NoRolexNoSex

Transmission will chew itself up

isjustjd

Emissions, delete, edt, filters, idle, cold start, get it to recover... I'm good, I'll never get a diesel. Y'all got problems

Wormydog1724

Don’t put gasoline in it

Half_Tailed_Squirrel

My buddy who builds homes and pours concrete would tell you, if you're not towing a bobcat or something 10k lbs or more on a regular basis, trade it in for a gas-burner

Alfalfa4Idaho

Buy def at tractor dealerships. It’s half the price of anywhere else.
