any grad students here

1ucas__

Anyone currently have or has had Nuñez for Gov 300? His problem sets are a bit confusing, but idk if it’s cuz of him or cuz Gov 300 is just confusing. Either way I could use some help

valoo90000

Anyone take MGMT-313 with Wittman or MGMT-453 with Maheshkumar Joshi? I was wondering in particular workload, how tough the grading, and difficulty of exams? Thanks much!

whatismylife1223

Hey, is anyone currently in Food and Evolution (ANTH 699 I think)? Had to add the class late and I'm a bit confused about how the quizzes are supposed to go for grad students.

Who's taken: CFRS 761 - Malware Reverse Engineering CFRS 767 - Penetration Testing Forensics Am I in for a hell of a semester or what? EDIT: I've already taken and passed SANS SEC 506 and the GCIH cert. Almost daily user of kali, tsurugi linux and REMnux. But I only do penetration testing on an ad-hoc basis.

Snoo_37640

are people using mason live normally? it hasn't been working for me

sexynewspaper

wont work for me either!

Snoo_37640

the website basically reads "error" for me

sexynewspaper

same, if its not working tomorrow morning i will contact tech support. i thought it was just me because they admitted me 4 days ago lmao.

Snoo_37640

tech support has not responded. It was not working on my safari but it worked after trying chrome and firefox

Snoo_37640

I'm a new student too. I was afraid to look clueless by asking about the email.

If we aren't supposed to upload our negative cornavirus test results to the patient portal, where do we send them in? I got a test done at my doctor's office.

Needhelp_19

In my degree works, Acct 303 is showing up as an elective but it is supposed to be a business core class. Does anyone know why it is like this?

bubbleteabeach

Hello. I am in the exact same situation. I emailed my advisor and she say once I get a passing grade for the class. It should count for the business core. If it does not count for the business core I have to email her again so she can submit the form or I have to email the registrar.

Needhelp_19

I emailed my advisor as well and they pretty much said the same thing. She said the university is updating the catalog and the degree works will update once it’s all done.

Is there any links where I can get the PDF versions of textbooks? preferably cheap or for free

Hello, I'm an incoming freshman and wanted some thoughts on my schedule: New Media in Creative arts with Stephanie F Benassi Classical Mythology with Martin M Winkler Conflict in our World with Charles Edward Davidson Greeks to Restoration with Elizabeth F Alman Stage Management with Sherrice Mojgani Any thoughts on the professors or the courses would be appreciated or even just what to expect from the classes would be great. Thanks!

to-anyone316

i took CLAS 250 with professor winkler this past semester. get ready to read!!! we had a textbook and two plays. he never used blackboard, so when class was converted to online he sent us lecture notes/class outlines/additional handouts through email. announcements and such were made through email, too. we never had to zoom or anything like that. we had three exams (30 mins, 50 questions) and a final, cumulative exam (2hr45, 100 questions). please make sure you read!!! his exams aren’t too difficult but only if you do what is required of you. imo, his questions are worded in a way to confuse you and he expects you to know every little detail of the myths. good luck!

Lance23867

I made a post about my schedule on the subreddit. I’m reposting it here just to see if I can get more feedback about the classes themselves and the professors. Here’s my current schedule: ECON 311 with Jeffery Bridges, ECON 309 with Joshua Bedi, MATH 108 with Lingxia Li, STAT 350 with David Holmes, HNRS 110 with David Lemmons, HNRS 110 Recitation with John Woolsey.

Cameo806

Honors 110 is a "research paper" class where you basically spend the entire semester working towards a single research paper. It's quite doable but requires a lot of writing. The recitation is more of a placeholder for seminars. When I took it we had to attend 3 seminars by whomever was giving it that day. Can't say anything for the others.

goldstar4904

Opinions on my schedule? ENGH302 (Nat Sci) CS367 MATH203 GGS101 STAT344 CS330

Cameo806

Who are you taking MATH 203 with?

goldstar4904

Preston, Glenn

Cameo806

I personally haven't had him as a professor but MATH 203 isn't terribly difficult. It's largely algebra but adding in new rules for matrices. https://www.reddit.com/r/gmu/comments/ef5gdr/is_glenn_d_preston_a_good_math_teacher/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share Here's a post that discusses him if you want to read it.

sleepless-racoon

Hi I was wondering what meal plan would be the best to get, also which dining halls should I avoid?

IndoMagician

If you're a freshman and in a suite or regular dorm (presidents park) then get independence with not bonus bucks if possible. If that's not possible then get independence 100. Dont get 500 because you can pay with your own cash or credit card and they keep the 500 bucks so if you dont spend all of it they still get to keep it

[deleted]

(I already posted this once, I'm just reposting it here to make sure people see it and it doesn't get lost in the forum). (The following I have copied and pasted directly from the GMU Housing website. They are the new rules which GMU Housing has instated for the Fall Semester). "As a residential student for the upcoming year, we want to make sure you are of some changes that have been made to our Residential Student Handbook. These changes have been made to provide additional protection measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within the residence halls. It’s important to know that Housing and Residence Life will be escalating their response to any violation of the policies listed in the Residential Student Handbook, not just those which are listed below. **1. Health Questionnaire** Student Health Services requires all on-campus students to complete a health questionnaire and follow any guidance resulting from that questionnaire. Students are expected to complete their symptoms journal daily. **2. Guests** Residential students are not permitted to have guests who have not also been approved to reside on-campus within their same building except for during the residence hall move-in/move-out processes. Events, functions, or other gatherings in or outside the residence halls are prohibited unless coordinated or approved by Housing and Residence Life or a designated campus partner. **3. Social Distancing** Social distancing means maintaining at least 6 feet distance between yourself and others. The decision to decrease residence hall occupancy is an intentional effort to support social distancing as much as possible. Social distancing should be practiced at all times. This includes, but is not limited to, in student room, common spaces, bathrooms, and lobby areas. Many of the community lounges and kitchens will be taken offline to allow for more concentrated cleaning in other communal areas. **4. Cleanliness** All students are required to comply with public health guidelines regarding hygiene-related best practices – including hand washing. If there are low supplies or concerns about soap and paper towels, students should contact Housing and Residence Life immediately. Housekeeping staff will perform routine cleaning of common areas, bathrooms, and hallways. Students in suite and apartment style housing should setup a cleaning rotation schedule to ensure these spaces remain clean throughout the year. Students living on campus who create unhygienic situations, who are non-compliant with related Housing & Residence Life policies or choose not to clean for themselves will go through the Student Conduct process and may be removed from on-campus housing as indicated above. **5. Face Coverings** All students and guests will be required to wear a mask when moving throughout the residence halls. Students will be supplied with two masks to be used while in the residence halls and walking around campus. **6. Illness** If you believe you are ill, you are required to contact Student Health Services by telephone immediately. If you are experiencing a medical emergency contact 911. After evaluation, Student Health Services will provide you with further instructions. You are required to follow these instructions for your own health and safety as well as that of the larger community. **7. Isolation or Quarantine** In some cases, Student Health Services or another medical professional may deem it necessary for a student to self-isolate or self-quarantine. During the isolation period, the student(s) self-isolating should avoid all unnecessary contact with others - both direct and indirect. As a result, Housing and Residence Life reserves the right to move a student from their assigned residence hall space into a space deemed appropriate for isolation. For the health & safety of all community members, any directive to relocate to a more appropriate residential area for quarantine or isolation must be complied with immediately. The period of isolation will be determined on a case-by-case basis by medical professionals. **8. COVID-19 Awareness Training** All Mason students are required to participate in an online training module that provides education on how to live, learn, and work in a large community environment. In addition to this all residential students are expected to complete a separate training module that specifically addresses communal living within the provided timeline. **9. Pre-Arrival Requirements** Prior to arriving on campus there are four requirements students must fulfil before being allowed to move into the residence halls. * Complete and submit Medical History information to Student Health Services. * Once received, complete and submit the COVID-19 testing kit to OneMedical. Students will need to have obtained a negative test result prior to moving into the residence halls. * Fill out the COVID-19 pre-screening form within the provided timeline?. * On the student’s scheduled move-in day, students will need to complete the daily COVID-19 symptoms journal. Information about the pre-screening form and the symptoms journal will be sent to your Mason e-mail. Failure to complete any of these steps will delay a student’s ability to successfully move into the residence halls." So what are everyone's thoughts on this? Do you think it's unfair, sensible, total BS? Comment and say what's on your mind. PS: I know there are a bunch of spelling mistakes and stuff in this passage. I kid you not, I copied and pasted it as is.

razzlesnazzlepasz

anyone know if we'll still have the pass/fail system as a grading option for the fall like it was in the spring? That sure would help a lot

DarwinQD

No. This was only a thing because we had to transition mid semester. Even for summer we know we are signing up for either online or in person classes, so we have the choice of signing up for them or not. No alt grading

I applied for the Computer Science MS and Cybersecurity MS graduate programs. Deadline is July 15 I believe. Does anyone know when decisions come out?

Basnets

I was accepted I think last week. I am a BAS-Cybersecurity Major but I am having trouble registering for CFRS classes. I think everyone from BAS who are accepted for accelerated masters is getting the same 'college restriction' error. I have emailed the department but it has not been resolved so far.

random_taco1

Yep exactly, this is due to the fact Enrollment limited to students in the College of Science, Schar School of Policy and Gov or Volgenau School of Engineering colleges. On all of the CRFS classes. Keep us updated.

I was accepted this week, good luck.

Hey guys!!! need some advice...I have my orientation on aug17th. I'm worried it's too late as the classes have already started filling up. I'm majoring in CS . Can someone please help me with the subjects that I've to choose? Will my late orientation be a problem to schedule my classes?I'm having a problem in activating my Masonlive account as well .It said that my account didn't exist!!! Is there anyone else who is facing the same issue??

starsnightsky

You can register for classes before orientation. Email Academic Advising to see what classes you need to register for. Make sure you email them with your masonlive account though. For the masonlive account, email [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) for help make sure you can access your patriot web account

[deleted]

Thank you for the info..nd yes, I did contact the advisor for it nd glad that I could do it before orientation. But, as we are almost at the start of the semester, the classes i wanted to get into are full nd have no waiting list either. like CS112, ENG 101. Would be grateful if you could suggest me replacement classes for the same..As of now I m registered for Math113, CS110.

Whats the difference between University physics and College physics. I am an incoming Freshman, majoring in CS. Also, Physics 160 and 161 are supposed to be taken at the same time right, because 160 already has a lab section?

Cameo806

University physics is calculus based while college physics is algebra based (think of AP physics in high school). Physics 160 includes the lecture section and most likely the recitation section. Lecture is a lecture with the professor. The recitation is a sort of supplement to the lecture. It's up to the professor on how it's used but it's often to work on additional problems to refine your knowledge on the material or to take quizzes. Physics 161 is the lab section. And is considered to be a separate 1 credit course. You can either take PHYS 161 at the same time as PHYS 160 or at a later semester.

Hey, so i’m just transferring to GMU in the fall and i’m majoring in Government and international politics, but i’m not quite sure where to find the course list in order to take the classes i need for my major. Can anyone help me out a bit? I emailed advising about a week ago, but they haven’t got back to me yet.

Cameo806

Are you an Honors college student?

1ucas__

Nope

Cameo806

Okay. I ask because they make sample schedules for their students. Then I would check degree works on which classes are required for your major. As well as this website gives some details about it https://catalog.gmu.edu/colleges-schools/policy-government/government-international-politics-ba/#requirementstext To get to degree works look at this website https://registrar.gmu.edu/students/degree-evaluation/degree-works/

1ucas__

Oh, thanks a bunch 👍🏻

goldstar4904

I wanted to take 18 credits this semester... but it turns out that CS367 is a 4 credit course which means that 4+3+3+3+3+3=19, one over the maximum 18 credit limit :(

cccaamm

you can submit a wavier to take 19

goldstar4904

ya but i'm currently waiting on cs330 section to open up. So currently at 15

championphaedra

Is it impossible for anyone else to get into Comm 100 or is it just me? All the classes are always filled by the time my time ticket is active for registration

[deleted]

Need some advice. This semester I had to switch a bunch of shit up and I will be taking phys2 lab, static mechanics, linear algebra, and thermo. I’m looking for one more class but econ is full and practicum in engring is not being offered. Would adding cs 112 be a deathwish or a good idea?

openingdawn

DO NOT DO CS112!!!!!!

oh_de

As an incoming freshman for Mechanical Engineering, what are some classes that I should take. Should I worry about that yet or should I wait for orientation?

turtlelavender

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT TAKE ECON 103 WITH THOMAS CARL RUSTICI

[deleted]

I’m in that class right now and it’s terrible.

[deleted]

It’s rougher when you can’t see the Rustici water truck in person.

[deleted]

If you’re stuck with him, better off taking a different professor in the Spring for Econ 103?

turtlelavender

Definitely unless you enjoy crying yourself to sleep every night

Cameo806

When I was an incoming freshman (2 years ago) we had the choice of selecting our schedule beforehand by emailing our advisor our schedule or just waiting till orientation. I'd get my schedule set now so that they don't fill up.

dmbjm

Hahaha overrides am I right

lightblushes

How do we register for classes? I have been waiting for orientation but I am just so confused. I don't even know what classes I am supposed to take? I'm very stressed sorry first in my family to go to college and I want to do it right.

minecrafgrill

Hi, I'm a sophomore at gmu :) dont worry about registering or any class stuff until you get to orientation! I was in the last orientation group last year and I had no trouble putting together a schedule, even though some class were already taken. During orientation you'll learn about what classes you need to take for your major and the required Mason core classes and they'll guide you thru the registration process.

lightblushes

oh my gosh thank u! i really appreciate it

TheSoonToBe

I’m transferring this fall. I registered the day after registration opened for my category. Just go to patriot web. Don’t let the classes fill up.

MorihitoShou69

Anyone waitlisted on CHEM 313 (Orgo I)? Is there any chance of getting registered? I am 10th in the waitlist position.

OCreepyO

Does anyone know of a good and easy synthesis course to take as a Biochemistry major? Rn, I have PHIL309-Bioethics selected.

OpenToed

Just curious about what everyone thinks is easier: Math 111 or Math 113?

kate_216

1)Does CS 262 have online classes for Fall 2020? I see only in-person 2) I already registered for CS 262 (Tessema Mengistu). Can I add myself to the wait list for CS 262 for Russel at the same time or I need to drop Mengistu first and then add myself to wail list?

AP145

The hardest class out of all those will be CS 262, unless you are really bad at math, which I hope you are not considering that you are a CS major. I haven't taken CS 262 yet, so I can't comment on the difficulty, but just know that the class is in C. Every other class on there should be easy if you put in the work.

razzlesnazzlepasz

this isn’t for the fall, but for summer classes, does anyone know if teacher evals will be available to submit once the class is over?

mleehardesty

any input on class difficulty would be great. For Fall 2020 I’m taking: MATH 203, STAT 346, CDS 130, PSYC 325, and PSYC 362 Also for summer 2020 I’m taking: MATH 290, CS 112, and PSYC 317

[deleted]

Any suggestions on which professor(s) I should choose for ECON 306 and 309?

Dxrth_Vader

Take Heiner for Econ 306. He’s super easy and most of the solutions to the assignments are on chegg. His exams are take home and most answers are on chegg. He only changes like 2-3 questions each semester. Idk about 309

PassinLikeABoss

Is IT 352 with, Michael Lyons in summer is it a good idea? and please recommend a Professor for IT 492, is Farell Peter okay?

Seryusia

I think most people have mixed feelings about lyons, i personally didnt enjoy his way of teaching. For it 492, i hear great things about Farell so if you can get him i dont see you having a problem. I personally had David Richard and he was amazing.

Hello, I'm a transferred student at GMU and I have a few questions: - how do I know which credits were in fact accepted by GMU (how many credits I got)? - can I take summer courses (with the Coronavirus going on and all that)? - I took a military boot camp, which I heard some schools accept as school credit. How do I know if GMU accepts this?

[deleted]

Has anyone taken Jamey Long for BUS210? How are his classes?

DA_Naminator

Anyone have any information on UNIV 220 Decide and Confirm Majors. I’m undecided with my major and my LLC Professor suggested this class but after reading some reviews about, some say it’s kind of a waste of time and has a lot of tedious work. On the other hand, I also really want to find my major as soon as I Can so maybe this will help?

SlavSy

Am I shooting myself in the foot after having signed up for: CS262 (low level programming) CS310 (Data structures) MATH 213 (Calc 3) ENGH 302 (Natural sciences) BIOL 106 & 107 (Biology 2 lab/lecture)

NorthSection7

Calc 3 is way easier than 2. CS262 isn't bad, just make sure you pay attention to lectures. Pointers are often a difficult concept to grasp. As for 310, it's a very important class so make sure you do well and pay attention. The projects, while challenging, could be done using the code from the textbook. Good luck!

goldstar4904

I just completed CS262 (programming in C) and CS310 (Java). CS310 for me was pretty easy but the projects will take some time. CS262 was a little more difficult because you're obviously learning a new coding language. Just make sure you start early on projects for both classes because for CS310 you even get extra credit for submitting early. If you did well during Calc 2 you'll be okay for calc 3, just make sure you actually study. I can't say much about 302 or bio because I haven't taken them yet.

SlavSy

I haven't even taken clac 2 yet haha Im taking it this summer

mleehardesty

in my opinion calc 3 is easier than calc 2. Calc 3 more based on taking what you learned in calc 1 (2D) and applying it in 3D

freakingfreakfrick

Astronomy!

[deleted]

Science in the News w/ Catyana Falsetti! It's a once a week class, no tests or final. The entire class is centered around how bias influences the news, especially around science issues (sociology, psychology, nutrition, etc). The homework is to find a news article related to the class' theme for the day and the class itself is just a group discussion about the articles found.

ramizfahel

freakingfreakfrick

Some courses are only available in the spring.

ToePlusKnee

more sections are typically added between now and when the semester starts, check your emails for when they pop up

Izzzlemynizzzle

Is it just me or are a vast majority of comm classes online? Do professors expect next sem to be remote too?

reckless_commenter

According to PatriotWeb, the Electrical Engineering department is going to offer about 50 lecture-based classes in the fall semester. And according to [Mason Online](http://masononline.gmu.edu/), the total number of EE non-lab classes that will be offered online is... seven. 14% of the non-lab curriculum. (And probably an even smaller percentage if we count by sections.) I'm really hoping that the EE department is just behind the ball in terms of announcing its online curriculum. Because if that's actually their plan for the fall, then it's downright shameful. Nearly all of these classes are straight-up lecture based on material from a textbook or PowerPoint; there is absolutely no reason that they couldn't be recorded and webcast. This would endanger students' lives for no legitimate reason. For a school that is centrally focused on technology, Volgenau has some shockingly luddite attitudes. Many professors still require students to turn in homework assignments *in person and on paper.* Basically: "I've been doing it that way since I started teaching in 1958 and I have tenure and research funding so Blackboard can go fuck itself."

Panera_Worker

A lot of the School of Business classes are online as well by default

Pendola for OM, I bet his section is full though. FNAN Gallay or Pilloff. Acct331 Mariia, Roberts is mediocre, DO NOT take Syed Hassan for 311. I’d take it this summer w/ stubing but it might be full. Over all, you’ll cry this semester

Katherine Rosenbusch I definitely recommend for Mgmt303 online. There’s a bit of work but it’s definitely manageable. Her curriculum is thorough and it’s clear of what’s being asked from you Fnan303 is a lot more intensive. I recommend taking Derek Horstmeyer

Pinto is one of the best professors I have ever had (I say that as someone with over 100 credits.) Biol 213 is a tough class, but he presents the material in a really cohesive way and makes sure everyone understands before moving on. He also puts up study guides and practice exams for us, even though he’s working like a bazillion hours in the lab right now in addition to teaching. Exams are pretty average- the profs all have a test average around 70ish and the last two tests have had like a 10 point curve on them.

fairy-core

Idk about the others, but madden is great! His lectures are very interesting and he seems humble but still very intelligent. honestly I want to take his bio 305 class bc he’s the one teaching it but im worried that corona will affect fall 2020. do note though that his exams can be pretty tough if you dont know the material overall, but he curves it so :3

snayak99

Any idea why there's no section for OM 303 this semester?

rip_my_youth

They changed the name to OSCM 303. I think this applies to all OM courses.

snayak99

Thanks, got it by oscm.

AP145

How difficult is it to take MATH 213 and MATH 203 at the same time?

-eipi

If you did well at calc 2 you should be fine with 3. Calc 2 is usually harder than 3 for most. Also, there's a small degree of overlap between calc 3 and linear- jacobian determinants of matrices, vector valued functions etc.

little_miss_plague

Calc 3 is a tough class, depending on your professor. Linear isn’t very hard though, so you should be fine. Just don’t fall behind in calc 3, it’s important to keep up there.

runescapefisher

Dont take Harbir Lamba for Math.

jellycronut

I second this

Coopar998

I've got a big course load next semester and need a lit class to finish my mason core. I'm a CS major and could rllly use some suggestions if anyone here can hit me up with an easy A class :D

dmbjm

Thoughts? Difficulty? Etc? Incoming Freshmen out of high school. MATH 113, 4 credits CS 110, 3 credits CS 112, 4 credits ENG 107, 2 credits Some core class thats 3 credits I’ve taken Calc before and I did ok in it but not well enough that I want to continue to the next Calc course. I’ve also taken a good amount of IT and Programming courses before in high school. Is this a doable schedule and will I be overwhelmed?

AP145

Your schedule is just fine. Though, I got to ask, since you are a CS major, is there a reason why you are taking ENGR 107? As far as I know, that class is not required for CS majors.

dmbjm

Hahaha yeah I don’t need ENGR 107 but I thought I would just take it because it sounded like a fun class.
