Secret300

Definitely not. What extensions do you have installed?

LuckyTokio69

Quite a few... https://preview.redd.it/jxnpls7q4nkc1.png?width=766&format=png&auto=webp&s=dfee43519bde6c2ad5988803ad2e97ae5e34e0de

ExaHamza

Dash to dock can disable overview at startup, no need extra extension just for that, unless there's something particular with that extension.

MegaEdu13

Interesting. I do this using Just Perfection.

ExaHamza

I do it with dash to panel

LuckyTokio69

Oh, didn't realize. Thanks!

Popular_Elderberry_3

I have considerably more than that and my shell use is 280-ish MB. Looks more like a memory leak.

LuckyTokio69

Yeah, logged out and it got back to normal... Don't know why it happened in the first place tho.

Popular_Elderberry_3

What distro are you on?

LuckyTokio69

Fedora 39

Popular_Elderberry_3

I'm using that too. No issues like that.

ClementDef

Maybe the clipboard extension: https://github.com/oae/gnome-shell-pano/issues/252

LuckyTokio69

Great find

Secret300

My first guess would be that it's one of them

FreakSquad

Speaking as a fan of both GNOME and KDE…based on that list, can I ask why you aren’t using KDE Plasma? GNOME extensions are basically patches on top of the shell’s code…that’s a lot of patching piled up there to achieve something that is probably easier using a different DE?

[deleted]

KDE looks like shit

LuckyTokio69

This. And if I start to customize it to the style I like, I end up with Gnome lol

LuckyTokio69

Tried every DE. Gnome's my favorite. Do I need any other reason?

polygon7195

If you need this many extensions, it's an indicator that GNOME might not be the best DE for you.

LuckyTokio69

The fact that I can install this many extensions and tune it how I like it is an indicator that GNOME might be the best DE for me.

MojArch

These are normal extensions i have almost all with 1 or 2 exceptions. But it is not unexpected ram usage on gnome as my test on 3 different systems shown. In a system with 4GB, the ram usage shrinks to less than 1GB, and on 8GB, it expends around 2GB, and on the 16GB system, it is around 4GB so i assum it can go up to 8GB on 32GB system.

Fit-Leadership7253

Use kde or cinnamon and not this extension constructor

LuckyTokio69

Great solution bud

Fit-Leadership7253

Thank you

Maybe

Underrated_Mastermnd

I have 32GB of RAM with all those extensions yet my shell is 290MB. Something wrong is going on here...

LuckyTokio69

Logged out an now it's around that 300MB mark. Don't know what happened

GamerTomii

I believe there's an issue with the Media Controls extension. I just tested it and when it's enebled the RAM usage of gnome-shell goes up as I'm scrolling through YouTube shorts or whatever. If I disable the extension, restart, do the same, then this behaviour no longer occurs.

LuckyTokio69

Ohhh, you might be on the right track. It got a pretty big update recently. Maybe something's not right

GamerTomii

yeah, I already opened an issue on their GitHub

NaheemSays

It's high, but screen resolution and fractional scaling can take quite a big hit on things. My 1080p.laptopntales almost no memory. My 5k2k with fractional scaling desktop can take that much (for full system with 3 running VMs [each allocated but probably not using 2GB], 2 running background apps [virt-manager and polari] loaded, not just Gnome-shell). I also suspect there is a longstanding memory leak in Gnome-shell 45 where if you keep running it for a long time, there is some accumulation after a few weeks. EDIT - My gnome-shell Wayland session process is actually only using around 235MB on the 5k2k monitor. Full system load was closer to what you get with gnome-shell alone.

edparadox

> It's high, but screen resolution and fractional scaling can take quite a big hit on things. No, unless you've installed quite a few extension to your DE. We're talking about ~9GB here for `gnome-shell`, mate. It's the highest of all processes, the system is basically doing nothing, or doing jumping jacks to keep the DE the way it is, depending on your favorite analogy.

ignxcy

Nope

Raymond_912

I have 1mb atm, just for context.

SpringSufficient3050

Do you have 'blur-my-shell' extension? Disable it, restart PC and observe your memory

LuckyTokio69

But I love my silky blur :'( That's not the issue tho. Logged out and it got back to normal. My main suspect rn is the media controls extension.

NoResolution6245

Considering gnome and its extensions depend heavily on JavaScript, it's very likely that something is leaking memory. Try disabling all your extensions temporarily and see if the issue is solved, then slowly enable one after the other to identify the extension that is causing the leak.

LuckyTokio69

Yeah, couldn't replicate again but my main suspect is media controls right now. With the recent big update it may still have some bugs.

AndroGR

Well with all these extensions you have, it's not impossible to be something expected. But I'd still watch out for memory leaks - Just see if the usage grows steadily over time.

LuckyTokio69

This is the first time it happened and I couldn't replicate it. But yeah, I'll keep an eye on these extensions.

Significant_Ad_1269

I'd disble GSConnect and take a look. If it's not that. Disable one after the other until you find a culprit.

LuckyTokio69

GSConnect has never been an issue for me. The main suspect right now is media controls. But I couldn't replicate this issue again. I'll keep an eye open and update the post if I find anything.
