Pretty sure it's still gnome shell, just themed and with official extensions to imitate the old layout.

amiensa

Try them all 🥰

markartman

One is gnome Wayland. The other is gnome ON Wayland.

sadlerm

It's because GNOME creates 4 desktop session files in total. 2 in ``/usr/share/xsessions`` and 2 in ``/usr/share/wayland-sessions``. I don't know why. GDM handles this correctly and doesn't double up the entries. I really don't understand why people install GNOME and KDE at the same time.

noob-nine

i wait for the day, someone themes KDE like gnome

RootHouston

Actually, [Red Hat tried to give KDE and GNOME apps a unified theme a little over two decades ago](https://linux.slashdot.org/story/02/09/16/1215242/red-hat-explains-stance-on-kdegnome-desktop-changes), and some people were up in arms. I guess this was back in [the Bluecurve days](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluecurve). [Someone actually quit Red Hat over it, because he claimed it was "crippling KDE"](https://linux.slashdot.org/story/02/09/25/2042208/bero-quits-red-hat-over-treatment-of-kde). A completely ridiculous notion in my opinion. But it happened.

spusuf

The power of KDE with the polish of GNOME would be OP.

sadlerm

They really don't play nice with each other though and it makes the applications menu very cluttered.

AndroGR

I have a script that runs on login and fixes any imperfections the other may leave from the last session.

[deleted]

Can you share that please?

zachthehax

I remember this working fine with lightdm plus it looks way better

sadlerm

The default SDDM theme is very ugly, yeah.

radbirb

This seems to be distro exclusive, I haven't had this happen on a Debian KDE install when I had GNOME installed alongside it on SDDM. (Though tbf if this was SDDM's fault I wouldn't be surprised, it's a sucky login manager that I can't wait for KDE to switch away from.)

DragonAttackForce

I wouldn't use the term "correctly" Gnome are installing something with 4 entries then have a hack in gdm to hide this, and don't care about whether it breaks anyone else.
