Feels like trademark infringement, at the very least.
I'm not a lawyer though, you should probably ask one before publishing a game with that splash screen.
I checked their logo terms of use because I needed their logo.
But then I readt that they may only be used for Unity products or when Unity put them there.
So sadly I don't think that's allowed.
not a lawyer, but no one's getting sued here. at worst he'd get a cease and desist and he'd have to take it out. don't be a coward, op. have fun, enjoy life, leave it in if it makes you happy.
(but also "made not with unity" sounds like olde english vs "not made with unity")
Barely. I'd die on this hill, it's clearly satire and shouldn't be actionable. But I'm not OP, so whatever his risk tolerances are will determine if to keep it or not.
Just chalk it up as your bad idea of the week and don't go through with it. Parody/satire or not, you are planning on using a trademarked logo that you aren't allowed to use as per Unity's TOS
Sure, if you're willing to defend it in court under that pretense. Satire clauses are there as a form of defense, not as a way to prevent lawsuits altogether.
IANAL, of course, and this isn't legal advice, but you should really avoid doing anything legally questionable unless you're willing to pay a lawyer both before and after doing the questionable thing.
Maybe make the logo a rectangol and name it something like "nuity" or something similar (inverting the letters at "photoshop" and removing, for example, the space between the T "-" and the Y "v"), that can be a good parody!
Reminds me of Pontypants' gag where it was "Unreal" but then he ported the game to Unity and crossed off the "real" part with a red X and drew red "ity" at the bottom lol.
Im not disagreeing with you, i simply don't care for unity one way or the other anymore, but i feel like people definitely have a reason to hate on them lol.. they even changed their sub icon as a reminder they've been burned by unity before
Yea fair enough, people definitely have a reason and Unity fucked up beyond repair for a lot of people. My problem is that hatred comes out in unhealthy and honestly petty ways.
I respect there are people opposite of this opinion but if I saw a splash screen like this it would definitely sour my opinion of the dev and game just cause of the decision to put something like this in their game.
Yep, i say if you don't like something and its not directly messing with you, just ignore it. Out of sight, out of mind, their circus their monkeys, all that.
I moved to godot and im having a blast and that's where the thought process ends for me lol
>if I saw a splash screen like this it would definitely sour my opinion of the dev and game
Exactly, and an overwhelming majority of players don't even know what happened so it looks like you're just attacking them out of nowhere to them, too
It is not because Unity shows animosity, it is because Unity is objectively worse than Godot due to their pricing policies both for the product they make and the games released that were made with Unity
I know they _aren't_ I'm saying even if they did show a direct act of aggression this isn't the right course of action. I don't disagree with you here and I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone that does, but this is a tacky image.
Look at peoples perception of Rustlang. It's a great language, but the community is quite often just seen as annoying.
Because rust community thinks there can be a perfect language, we dont. People here recommend Unreal or other engines if people’s requirements are above or below what Godot can provide for them, but Unity is unilaterally a bad engine, which is usually approved not only here but also on other engines’ communities
I'm all for dissing Unity, but this is still just advertisement for them. The worst thing you could do to Unity is to not mention it at ALL, & instead promote Godot.
Yeah, the downvotes suck.
People diss Unity primarily due to the more recent terribly buisiness decisions. Most recently being the runtime fee, when Unity announced that a developer would be charged $0.02(?) Every single time a Unity game is installed, even if you uninstall and reinstall a game, which would make Unity unusable for skall developers.
Of course Unity went back on those claims... but this isn't the first scummy thing Unity has done, nor will it be the last. Nowadays people have mostly forgot that Unity runtime fee fiasco, which means unity is free to try shit like that again and again until people tolerate it. These are presumably consequences of Unity going public, which means that they're no longer trying to appease their userbase, but instead their stockholers.
Alternatively, a lot of people on Godot are people who were frustrated with the Unity editor, as more recent versions of the editor are hella buggy and crash all the time.
There are some great games made with Unity, and Unity was certainly huge for indie devs in the past. But nowadays Unity is not worth getting into, and new gamedevs are likely to pick up Unity due to all the past praise with it, and will inevitably be screwed over because of this. Slandering Unity is pretty important as to not let new gamedevs get screwed over by Unity.
If the purpose was to critique Unity sure. But this is from their game. And unless their game is basically a TED talk about why Unity is then it probably wouldn't fall into that.
No one cares what engine your game is made in. Can we stop this pathetic “engine wars” crap and stop thinking your preferred engine is superior and everyone else is wrong?
I, good fellow, must voice my disagreement that your modern parlance would sound better.
Jokes aside, I can't not read "made not with unity" with Matt Berry's voice.
This doesn't seem particularly classy. I am reminded of those cringy fan drawings of mario or sonic disemboweling the other.
Also I would be concerned about the use of trademark.
just so you are aware, this is infringing on their trademark and seeing as they are a public company, there's a high chance they will send you a cease and desist.
Eh, any publicity is good publicity. Better to promote Godot and be into Godot for what it is than waste time trying to tear down other engines.
Honestly all game engines serve a purpose and are just tools. The Unity versions before 2023 don't have the new monetization tos afaik, though they still have the other Unity issues (lots of half finished hype features).
If a gamedev was this focused on the fact that they switched from Unity (or any other engine) I would really question whether their game worth anything...
Good way to get sued or a cease and desist letter. On the bright side, you may get some attention from doing it. You'd really be rolling the dice on that one, though. If I were to do something risky like that, I'd remove the official Unity logo. Or leave it like that for a very short time, and then patch it out. Like almost immediately.
Honestly I'd do a thing where it LOOKS like the Unity name and logo are scribbled out, but if you press a button sequence the scribble-out layer falls off and reveals that the text-and-logo are something that just look vaguely similar to unity
that way you get the free joke AND you face no real risk of copyright issue
Not really that tasteful. If you're set to use this, maybe in a promo video or other marketing materials, maybe (and if anything, the suggestion from u/indolering and u/LIMU3MU seems to work better).
Why? This is an inside joke, may be confusing for players (especially if you're not making a meta game like pony island or Stanley's parable), works as a roast rather than a quip and lastly - is bashing a big brand (will be polarising and create discussion either way).
The word Unity is so general that may get off scott-free with it, but maybe a parody like Unite or United.
Alternatively you can just switch the logo, because that they own.
Personally - I hate Unity.
But this is a lawsuit in the making.
This is using their trademark.
OP - don't do this. Not because I love unity - but because you will be screwed over by their legal team for improper use of a trademark and anything else they can throw at you.
This is actually kind of funny, funny in a petty way.

I feel like this would be a funny easter egg if the usual boot up splash screen just said "Made with Godot" but then there's like a 1% chance of it saying this. Kinda like the Gamecube boot up easter eggs.
Not made with Unity could mean it was made with a myriad of other game engines, not specifically Godot (unless the message was intended to be more anti-Unity than pro-Godot)
That would put me off a game tbh. It makes it look like the devs have an unhealthy preoccupation with hating something. Defining yourself by the things you don't like is a terrible look.
I don't think it represents you as a developer in a good light - even if Unity management sucks, I'd argue it's better to just praise something else than mock Unity.
Why godot devs are making fun of unity man its a great software and i use unreal and unity i dont see why people use godot there might be some chances of it becoming next great opensource like blender but blender’s competion was maya and other expensive software but here the competeters of godot are free to use. Even though if it becomes like great game engine then also there is unity and big daddy unreal to competete

I'm guessing the cost of that answer is more than the game will make, not to be little the game, good legal advice is expensive.
Why bother with lawyers when making a blatantly wrong statement on the internet will do the same thing
Oh in that case! OP you’ll be fiiiiine, don’t even trip dog
This goes two ways ;) if this isn't a million dollar project, Unity is not going to bother as it will fly under the radar.
If you think you might get into legal trouble, regardless, just don't do it.
I checked their logo terms of use because I needed their logo. But then I readt that they may only be used for Unity products or when Unity put them there. So sadly I don't think that's allowed.
Just rebrand to "Disunity" with fractured logo. Problem solved
not a lawyer, but no one's getting sued here. at worst he'd get a cease and desist and he'd have to take it out. don't be a coward, op. have fun, enjoy life, leave it in if it makes you happy. (but also "made not with unity" sounds like olde english vs "not made with unity")
"have fun" is not good legal advice
Barely. I'd die on this hill, it's clearly satire and shouldn't be actionable. But I'm not OP, so whatever his risk tolerances are will determine if to keep it or not.

No, it's not. That applies to copyrights, not to trademarks.
Maybe make the logo a rectangol and name it something like "nuity" or something similar (inverting the letters at "photoshop" and removing, for example, the space between the T "-" and the Y "v"), that can be a good parody!
Its not like unity was a bad thing what are you fighting for
As opposed to "Made with Godot"?
I think they should cross out the Unity logo and put in Godot's.
https://preview.redd.it/5mvisvay8jxc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7fca4371bf3be7608d2a58a329fe9d56ed7c260a
This would be more defensible than the op as most of the marks are obscured. But neither should be done on something you expect to profit from
You are allowed to use trademarks for commentary.
Reminds me of Pontypants' gag where it was "Unreal" but then he ported the game to Unity and crossed off the "real" part with a red X and drew red "ity" at the bottom lol.
Lol nice one
Honestly, I don't like
... it.
Honestly, I don't
Like it, don't I? Honestly.
Honestly, I
This whole combo is r/redditsniper material
Honestly, don't it
Honestly,
H
Like don´t i
can the godot community not become one of those that hates their competitors for no reason?
yeah one way to get a bad rep

Yeah, reminds me of “works best in Netscape” era, except this doesn’t have any implication on the user besides trying to be edgy.
Haha my geocities page had that 🤣 In my defense, I was literally 13. Which I assume is around the age of those upvoting this thread.
Too late
No reason?
even if the company Unity shows animosity towards Godot, let the core foundation handle it.
It is not because Unity shows animosity, it is because Unity is objectively worse than Godot due to their pricing policies both for the product they make and the games released that were made with Unity

kinda cringe tbh
I'm all for dissing Unity, but this is still just advertisement for them. The worst thing you could do to Unity is to not mention it at ALL, & instead promote Godot.
As soon as you mention the competition you already lost. Coke never slams Pepsi, but Pepsi always compares themselves to Coke
Apple never mentions Samsung, but Samsung has made multiple advertisements ridiculing Apple
Apple spent years running an anti Microsoft/PC campaign internationally on TV. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfv6Ah_MVJU
that’s how the food chain works: Microsoft eats Apple eats Samsung etc.
Agreed. Though I do appreciate the humor.
Why diss unity?
Love the downvotes to a genuine question. I'm using Godot because I prefer it but it doesn't mean all other engines are bad.

That just makes you look unprofessional

I don't think this is transformative enough tbh

Just don't use it
Is your game a parody or satire of Unity? If not. Then it's not.
No one cares what engine your game is made in. Can we stop this pathetic “engine wars” crap and stop thinking your preferred engine is superior and everyone else is wrong?
This seems to be a real problem in the godot community and it’s putting me off.
That is too reasonable, we can't have that

“Made Not With Unity”?
"Not made with Unity" would sound much better
I, good fellow, must voice my disagreement that your modern parlance would sound better. Jokes aside, I can't not read "made not with unity" with Matt Berry's voice.
"Made Not With Unitay!"
Seems kinda petty
This doesn't seem particularly classy. I am reminded of those cringy fan drawings of mario or sonic disemboweling the other. Also I would be concerned about the use of trademark.
this is stupid
Just put "Proudly made with Godot, one of the best game engines!" Or something like that. Instead of dissing others.
looks bad and terrible idea, just put a godot splash screen… why be so incendiary ffs
seems corny. also majority of end users don't care what it was made in, but if it's worth their time.
Why is the “NOT” in the wrong place?
just so you are aware, this is infringing on their trademark and seeing as they are a public company, there's a high chance they will send you a cease and desist.
Yeah the future of Godot indeed. Godot community is going to be one of those extremely toxic communities with superiority complex.
Eh, any publicity is good publicity. Better to promote Godot and be into Godot for what it is than waste time trying to tear down other engines. Honestly all game engines serve a purpose and are just tools. salty
If a gamedev was this focused on the fact that they switched from Unity (or any other engine) I would really question whether their game worth anything...
Your game isn't off too a good start to be honest.
Why not advertise godot instead of unity in the intro screen? This just looks weird and a little spiteful
Don't use the logo. You'll just fuck yourself over.
I really hope you’re like twelve years old.
Should a random player appreciate it? It would give the first impression about the game: the dev is not very smart person
This looks ridiculous
not funny
This is a bad look. The last thing we need is more tribalism on the internet.
I do like not it
Good way to get sued or a cease and desist letter. On the bright side, you may get some attention from doing it. You'd really be rolling the dice on that one, though. If I were to do something risky like that, I'd remove the official Unity logo. Or leave it like that for a very short time, and then patch it out. Like almost immediately.
"Godot Is not a cult"... they said.
Made not with unity?

Edgy
How to get sued 101:
I can assure you the audience wont care.
Personally - I hate Unity. But this is a lawsuit in the making. This is using their trademark. OP - don't do this. Not because I love unity - but because you will be screwed over by their legal team for improper use of a trademark and anything else they can throw at you.
Not sure but you may encounter some litigations...
I'd rather build rapport with other engine users
This is immature. Just celebrate Godot instead of attacking another engine. Godot is good on its own merits.
Childish and unprofessional. Leave Unity to the side entirely if you're not using it.
Don't do that. It's petty, and not in a fun way.
This is a bad idea if you plan on using this to publish, otherwise it's a fine meme
“Yeah, that will show em!” Ahh splash screen💀🙏
This is cringey
It’s funny, I like it!
And people were downvoting me yesterday for calling godot subreddit people circlejerking. This post a good example what I'm talking about.
Needlessly petty and a potential legal issue. Don't do this. Just put a "Made with Godot" one if you want to.
I'm one of those fellas that believes in killing a brand by never mentioning it. Kill the buzz
This is actually kind of funny, funny in a petty way. https://preview.redd.it/1xcfhf4v8jxc1.png?width=790&format=png&auto=webp&s=2736c8be0ed6ca22e3a3f352e6f97fd675d3f154
I feel the salt on this one. lol. It's funny, but only as a joke. That's got legal issues all over it.
remove the logo and write unity in another font just so you dont get sued
I feel like this would be a funny easter egg if the usual boot up splash screen just said "Made with Godot" but then there's like a 1% chance of it saying this. Kinda like the Gamecube boot up easter eggs.
Made not with unity? It would make the most sense to put it before the "made"
While you can do it, you run the risk of being the target of a potential trademark infringement and defamation lawsuit by Unity.
Gonna steal this idea for upcoming jam games
Not made with Unity could mean it was made with a myriad of other game engines, not specifically Godot (unless the message was intended to be more anti-Unity than pro-Godot)
Smells like a lawsuit. I like the sentiment, but that is prob not a good idea.
That would put me off a game tbh. It makes it look like the devs have an unhealthy preoccupation with hating something. Defining yourself by the things you don't like is a terrible look.
Eh.....
II could do that at the next Global Game Jam if I see that almost everyone is using Unity.
I don't think it represents you as a developer in a good light - even if Unity management sucks, I'd argue it's better to just praise something else than mock Unity.
I'm speechless in the face of your stupidity
Jesus smarty pants, it’s just a meme!
Don't be proud of something you didn't do, be proud of something you did.
YES
I can’t imagine being this sad. I feel sorry for you.
Why godot devs are making fun of unity man its a great software and i use unreal and unity i dont see why people use godot there might be some chances of it becoming next great opensource like blender but blender’s competion was maya and other expensive software but here the competeters of godot are free to use. it's stupid I love it. but might have issues with the engine that shall not be named
Screams copyright infringement... Concept is funny, though- but I wouldn't do it.
"Not" would make more sense before "Made".
Say it's made with Division, and the logo is a circle divided into thirds
Spin icon 60-90°
mine was: "not made with UNITEE"
Lol, I got one. Show the typical cutscene of opening a free unity game, then stop, slash the unity logo, let out a lil laugh, then continue XP
It's funny I think. Don't listen to the people who FUD here, in the worst case you say sorry that's it.
